About : 

• The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885 and in the same year, the first session was held in Bombay under the Presidentship of Shri W.C. Bonnerjee. The illustrious sons of India like Dadabai Naoroji, Surendra Nath Bannerjee and Madan Mohan Malaviya laid the foundation of this organisation.
  
• From the very beginning, the aim of the Congress was to establish Parliamentary institutions in the country. Renowned Constitutional experts like Dadabai Naoroji, Surender Nath Bannerjee and Gopal Krishan Gokhale, worked untiringly for setting up Parliamentary system of Government and for the growth of a secular, multilingual and multi-religious nationalism. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Aurobindo Ghosh, Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Paul were the first to adopt the posture of radical nationalism and invoked their countrymen to adopt a more dynamic plan of action. Lok Manya Tilak was the first to declare “Swaraj is my birthright”. In 1929, Jawaharlal Nehru presided over the Lahore session of the Congress. In this Session, the Congress declared complete freedom as its ultimate goal. During the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930-31 and 1931-32, the Indians undertook agitations on the appeal from Congress and these movements shook the foundations of the foreign rule in India.
  
• The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi could feel the pulse of the nation. He asserted that to achieve freedom, it was essential to create political awakening among the masses and train them for a struggle through non–violence against the foreign domination. Thus, non-violence became the basic creed of the Congress. The historic Karachi Session of Congress in 1931 was held under the Chairmanship of Vallabh Bhai Patel in which the famous resolution of fundamental rights was adopted.
  
• In the Lucknow Session 1936, Nehru formulated the foreign policy for the country based on working for peace and freedom, support for freedom struggle elsewhere and raising our voice against colonialism.
  
• In the historic meeting of All India Congress Committee, held in Bombay in 1942, presided over by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mahatma Gandhi gave the slogan ‘Do or Die’ and people of India stood as one force to fight the British Rule. Their struggle bore fruit in 1947 and India attained the long cherished independence.
  
• Smt. Indira Gandhi as Congress President in 1959 and from 1978 to 1984 worked for the cherished goal of a socialistic society. Decisions of her Government like Nationalisation of Banks and insurance companies, abolition of privy purses etc. were all aimed at removing economic disparity and increasing social control over the means of production and distribution. Great leaders have nourished and contributed to its growth and maturity.

About : 

• Handel was born in 1685 at Halle in Germany and died in 1759 in London.
  
• Unlike his great contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach, who came from a family of musicians, Handel was the son of a barber-surgeon who disapproved of music and wanted him to become a lawyer. On a clavichord which a friend smuggled into an attic of the house, Handel aged only eight, practised behind the closed door and by his persistence later succeeded in persuading his father to allow him to pursue music. After he had already established himself as a distinguished composer of operas, Handel visited England several times after the age of twenty-five and met with such success and appreciation that in 1726 he became a naturalised Englishman. Some of his greatest oratorios, including the Messiah, were written in England.
  
• The popular idea that Handel‘s style is easily recognisable comes from the fact that he over-shadows all his predecessors and contemporaries except Bach. Actually Handel‘s style is the apotheosis of the typical Italian style of the 18^th century. The effects of Handel‘s original inspiration upon foreign material are really the best indication of the range of his style and the effects of his influence on the great musical geniuses who followed him, such as Beethoven.

About : 

• Johann Sebastian Bach was born at Eisenach in 1685 and died in Leipzig in 1750.
  
• Since all the members of Bach‘s family were musicians by long tradition, his musical education came first from his father at Eisenach and subsequently from his elder brother with whom he lived on the death of his parents.
  
• At 15, he left school to become a chorister at Luneburg and later a violinist in the dual orchestra at Weimar. At the age of 18 he took an organist’s post at Arnstadt. A passion for wider musical knowledge distinguished him from the rest of his family, driving him to undertake uncomfortable journeys to centres like Hamburg. His prowess as an organist soon became renowned. The reception accorded to him by King Frederick the Great on a visit to the Court of Potsdam was the highlight of his career. Failing eyesight eventually necessitated an operation which was not successful and he died soon afterwards.
  
• Bach‘s influence in the history of western classical music was amazingly powerful. His was the most subtle and universal force in the development of music particularly of such great Masters as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Mandelssohn, Schubert, Brahms and Wagner.
• Bach‘s place in music is far higher than that of an inventor of new forms or a reformer of old ones. He is like a spectator of all music, time and existence, to whom it is not of the smallest importance whether a thing be new or old so long as it is true. Bach has been recognised by posterity as the bringer of polyphonic age to its greatest, final glory.

• A large number of programmes benefiting the youth have been and are being organised in the country at various levels with the specific objective of securing their participation in development activities contributing to building up their character and personality and promoting peace.
• As part of such activities, the university students youth festival, which used to be organised in the sixties, but was given up then, has been revived.

About : 

• Ravishankar Maharaj, a humble servant of the people was born in Radhu Village of Kaira Distt. on Feb. 25, 1884, on Mahashivaratri Day.
• Ravishankar Maharaj dropped out of school after the sixth standard and thereafter came under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi. His association with Mahatma Gandhi brought a drastic change in his vision of life. He actively participated in all the movements launched by Gandhiji and played a leading role in carrying out his constructive work. In 1920, he established Rashtriya Shala in Sunav for imparting national education to the youths aspiring to dedicate their lives for the country. During the course of Borsad Satyagrah in 1923 he extensively toured many villages and awakened the people against the injustice of foreign rule. He made fervent appeals to the people not to pay “Haidia Vero”. In 1928 he was arrested and sentenced to six months imprisonment for participating in the Bardoli Satyagrah along with Sardar Patel. In the satyagrah of 1930 too, he was jailed for two years. In 1941, when communal riots broke out in Ahmedabad, he moved fearlessly in the disturbed areas and played an indispensable role in restoring peace and communal harmony. He was jailed again by the British Government in the wake of the historic “Quit India Movement” of 1942.
• After independence Ravishankar Maharaj concentrated his entire energy on carrying out constructive work for the welfare of the people of Gujarat. He worked all through his life for the uplift of the backward and down-trodden people of Gujarat.
• Ravishankar Maharaj also took active part in the Bhudan and Sarvodaya Movements of Acharya Vinoba Bhave and undertook several padyatras for this noble cause. He moved from village to village organising relief works for the aid of the victims of natural calamities like cyclone, floods, draughts etc. and made permanent arrangements for the implementation of relief work in view of the repeated onslaught of such natural calamities in Gujarat. The most noted worthy work of Maharaj’s life was the reformation of a number of notorious desperadoes in Gujarat.
• Ravishankar Maharaj also launched the new state of Gujarat in 1960. This silent servant and great son of Gujarat announced his retirement from public life and issued a special appeal to the people not to raise any funds in his name, nor to raise any memorial in his name.
• Ravishankar Maharaj, the tallest Gandhian of Gujarat and a “Muthi Uchero Manvi” (a man first above the rest) breathed his last in hospital at Borsad on the morning of 1^st July, 1984 at the age of 101.

Name : Syama Sastri

About : 

• Shyama Shastri, eldest of the “Trinity” of Carnatic Music was born in Tiruvarur on the 26^th April, 1762. He was educated in Sanskrit and Telugu and is said to have learnt the rudiments of music from his uncle. The family moved to Thanjavur in 1781 and here he came under the influence of a Sanyasi “Sangitha Swami“, and mastered the intricacies of the art. His knowledge was also enlarged by association with Pachchimiriyam Adiyappayya, the Court musician. In spite of the reluctance of the family to let him adopt a musical career, he made great progress both as a musician and as a composer and eventually came to be reckoned as one of the “Trinity” of Carnatic Music.
• Shyama Shastri‘s compositions are original and have a style of their own. They are in slow tempo and the Raga (melody type) delineated in a few clear phrases full of Raga Bhava. He has composed both in well known and rare Ragas but he chose Ragas whose form is depicted more by Sancharas (movements) and gamakas (graces) than by the bare notes. He was also a master of Laya (Rhythm) and we find unusual inversion of beats in some of his compositions in Misrachapu Tala. It is said that he had won musical contests by his command over laya. Swarajati which was basically a dance form was developed by him into a beautiful musical form fit for concerts.
• His compositions are in praise of Goddess Kamakshi and Minakshi and are in Sanskrit, Telugu and Tamil (Shyama Shastri was the only one among the Trinity to have composed in Tamil). The songs have the signature ‘Shyama Krishna‘. Though he was named Venkata Subrahmanya, he was called by the pet name ‘Shyama Krishna‘ which he adopted as the ankitam.
• Shyama Shastri was a highly creative artist. The melodic form of his composition is strikingly original, unconventional and free, rich in emotional content. His compositions are in common ragas like Todi, Dhanyasi, Kambhoji, Yadukulakambhoji, Sankarabharanam and Kalyani and in uncommon ragas like Kalagada, Karnataka Kapi, Manji and Chintamani. He is acclaimed as the architect of the musical form, Svarajati. Shyama Shastri has also composed nine Kritis in praise of “Minakshi“, the Deity of the temple in Madurai. This group is called Navaratna–Malika.
• Shyama Shastri passed away on February 6, 1827 when he was only 65 years.

About : 

• The temple of goddess Shaileshwari is situated at Silgadi in Doti district of Seti Zone. Mention about this goddess is found in Skanda Purana (Hindu Mythology). It is a common belief that great sages and seers, gods and demons also would visit this place and offer their worship to goddess Shaileshwari. As said goddess Parbati once having found with Lord Shiva in her playful mood hid herself out of shame but being pleased by the prayers of god Indra and other, she appeared from stone (shila) and was named Shaileshwari. Many devotees from far and near congregate here everyday to worship Shaileshwari for alleviation from their sins and sufferings and to have their desires fulfilled.
  
• Jaleshwar Mahadev, situated at Jaleshwar in Mohottary district of Janakpur Zone, is famous from religious standpoint. Jaleshwar Mahadev is found inside the temple seated under water from time immemorial. The phallus of Mahadev remains always immersed in water supplied from an unseen underground spring and so is called Jaleshwar. Mention about Jaleshwar Mahadev is found in Padma Purana and Skand Purana (Hindu Mythology). It is a common belief that it rains sufficiently when water is full inside and there is drought when water gets dry. Devotees from Nepal and India throng in large number to worship lord Jaleshwar.
