Issued for : To salute our valiant Armed Forces for their heroic defence of Pakistan during the 17-day Indian aggression in September 1965, the Pakistan Post Office is issuing a set of three stamps of 7-Paisa (Army), 15-Paisa (Navy), and 50-Paisa (Air Force) denominations on the 25^th of December, 1965.

Designs :

(i) 7-Paisa (Army) : The scene of two advancing tanks is shown prominently in the design placed in the centre with hills in the background. A portrait of a Pakistani soldier is shown as a symbol of courage and determination. The Army crest appears in red on the top right hand corner. The Slogan “SALUTE TO OUR ARMY” is shown at the top in red. ‘Postage’ and ‘7 Paisa’ appear in the bottom left corner. The word ‘Pakistan’ in English, Urdu and Bengali appears in white in the Khaki strip at the bottom.

(ii) 15-Paisa (Navy) : A Pakistan navy Ship is shown sailing on high seas. On the right corner appears the portrait of a naval officer as a symbol of alertness and courage. The slogan “SALUTE TO OUR NAVY” runs across the middle sky at the top in blue and the crest at the left corner in the same colour. The word ‘Pakistan’ in English, Urdu and Bengali appears in white in the blue strip at the bottom. The words ‘15 Paisa’ and ‘Postage’ are also shown in the design.

(iii) 50-Paisa (Air Force) : Two Star Jet Fighters F-104 are shown soaring up in the sky with the portrait of a pilot in the right corner. Air Force crest appears in brown colour in the top left corner while the slogan “SALUTE TO OUR AIR FORCE” appears at the top in the same colour. The word ‘Pakistan’ in English, Urdu and Bengali appears in white in the dark grey strip at the bottom. The denomination ‘50 Paisa’ appears in the bottom left corner and ‘Postage’ in the middle just above the strip.

• THE PAKISTAN ARMY
  • The Pakistan Army is “one of the toughest and best trained armies in the world, excellently led, highly organized and totally dedicated”. This was the assessment of one of the writers on the recent Indo-Pakistan war, and most of the other foreign correspondents covering the conflict endorsed it. Says one, who witnessed the fighting on various Sectors : “I have been a journalist for 20 years and I want to go on record that I have never seen a more confident and victorious group of soldiers than those fighting for Pakistan”.
  • Early in September this year, India invaded Pakistan without any formal declaration of war. Four times in strength in men and material, the Indians were confident of a quick victory. Instead, they suffered humiliating reverses. In the 17-day war India lost 1,600 square miles of territory. India’s other losses included 9,500 officers and men killed, 11,000 wounded, 475 tanks destroyed and damaged and 110 planes destroyed. Pakistan’s losses were relatively light. Her casualty figures were 1,033 killed, 2,171 wounded and 630 missing. Out of 165 Pakistani tanks which were damaged or destroyed during the war, 80 have already been repaired and are now serviceable. In territory, Pakistan lost only 450 square miles. Pakistan’s remarkable success was due to the superiority of her fighting men in every field of battle-craft and to their complete dedication to the cause for which they are prepared to lay down their lives. Their courage and their guts have won them admirers all over the world.
  • The Pakistan Army has distinguished itself not only on the field of battle but also in the service of peace. Under the United Nations flag, units of Pakistan Army have served in the Congo and West Irian. The simple modest soldiers from Pakistan were universally respected for their quiet efficiency, their exemplary discipline and pleasant manners.
• THE PAKISTAN NAVY
  • The Pakistan Navy is a small, but well-equipped seagoing force with a modern fleet comprising essential Warships of various classes which are kept fully operational. It has a network of repair and maintenance units and essential training and shore establishments.
  • During the Indo-Pakistan war of September, the Pakistan Navy completely out-classed the much larger Indian Navy. The courage and daring of its officers and men and their vigilance did not allow the Indian naval units to even approach our coastline or move in the zones of our interest. The Pakistan Navy, on the other hand, carried out an effective offensive operation against the Indian coastal fortress of Dwarka and smashed its powerful radar installations, which were directing bombing raids over West Pakistan, and its shore batteries and other military objects. In the naval-air battle which ensued, Pakistan Navy guns accounted for three Indian aircrafts. In the only encounter between naval units of the two countries, Pakistan Navy submarine, P.N.S. GHAZI, patrolling the Arabian Sea, sent an Indian frigate down to the bottom when she was attacked by a force of enemy frigates. P.N.S. GHAZI triumphantly returned home, unscathed.
  • Throughout the war, Pakistan Navy maintained normalcy in harbours and ports and ensured safety of our merchant ships. The Pakistan Navy suffered no casualties or loss during the 17-day war.
• THE PAKISTAN AIR FORCE
  • The Pakistan Air Force, which had its baptism of fire in the September War, is the youngest of Pakistan’s three Services. It is not very large; but it is well-knit, well-muscled and fully operational air force. The Service is self-sufficient in training institutions which cater for all the needs of basic and advanced training of flying and maintenance personnel.
  • The combat aircraft in the Pakistan Air Force presently are all jets. These include the F-86 Sabre fighter-bombers, T-33 trainers, B-57 bombers and the supersonic F-104 Star-Fighters. In transport squadrons, the PAF operates C-130s.The Pakistan Air Force showed its mettle during the Indo–Pakistan conflict when this small but determined air force humiliated an enemy six times in size and possessing better aircrafts. During this 17-day war the PAF attained complete air supremacy and destroyed 110 IAF aircrafts, besides 19 damaged. These included MIGs, Canberras, Gnats and Hunters. In its close-support missions to the Army, the PAF destroyed 149 enemy tanks, 735 heavy vehicles and 62 heavy guns. The PAF came out of the war practically unscathed, losing only 16 aircrafts – 14 Sabres and two B-57 bombers. Only four of these aircrafts were lost in the air combat.

About : 

• Vidyapati is the greatest and most famous of Maithili poets. He was born in Bisaphi, a village in Northern Bihar around the year 1360 A.D. He died in 1448 after a long life full of literary achievement.
• Descended from a line of scholars he followed in the footsteps of his ancestors and became a court poet to the Maithili kings of the day. His literary and creative genius flowered under their patronage. He was a master of Sanskrit, the language of scholars and the large majority of his works is in that language. But his abiding place in the literature and affections of the people rests on his mastery and use of the vernacular, Maithili, as a vehicle of literary expression. His songs and poems in Maithili known as the ‘Padavali poems’ are unique and unrivalled in their lyrical and artistic quality. He was as much the popular bard of the masses as the sophisticated poet of courts. His style started a new literary tradition and greatly influenced the literatures of other languages such as Bengali and Assamese. The beauty and power of his poems have inspired other poets down to very recent times. Tagore himself has acknowledged his debt to Vidyapati‘s compositions in Maithili.
• Vidyapati‘s was a many sided personality. A lover of beauty, sensitive to human emotions and the joys of nature, he was at the same time, a man of the world with a fund of wisdom tempered by a deep faith in religion and God. He wrote eighteen works in Sanskrit and Maithili along with innumerable songs and ballads.
• Among his most famous works are the ‘Kirtipataka‘ a historical romance, ‘Gorakshavijaya‘ a drama in Maithili, ‘Purusha Pariksha‘ a collection of stories. His forte was, however, the vernacular ballad or song. His ballads are unrivalled in brilliance of metaphor and simile, choice of expression and flights of fancy and imagination. Vidyapati‘s popularity remains undiminished to this day. His name is a household word in Bihar and Bengal. It is not uncommon to find even the unlettered in Mithila lisping a couplet or two of Vidyapati on some occasion or the other.

• Among the great personages who shaped the destiny of the Indian struggle for freedom, Chittaranjan Das ranks as one of the most outstanding and prominent patriots who sacrificed his all for the country’s cause. “If I die in this work of winning freedom, I believe I shall be born in this country again and again, live for it, hope for it, work for it with all the energy of my life, with all the love of my nature till I see the fulfilment of my hope and the realisation of this idea“, said the patriot whom his countrymen rightly called “Deshbandhu.”
• Born on 5^th November 1870, C. R. Das had his early education in the London Missionary Society Institution, Bhowanipur, and graduated in 1890 from the Presidency College, Calcutta. He then proceeded to England where he joined the Middle Temple and was called to the bar in 1892. He returned to India in 1893 and enrolled himself at the bar of the Calcutta High Court. During his early years as a lawyer he was intimately associated as a budding poet with Rabindranath Tagore. After a series of sensational criminal cases in which he appeared to use his vast knowledge of British law for the defence of patriots and the advancement of the cause of India‘s freedom, the most famous of which was the case in which he defended Shri Aurobindo Ghose accused in the Alipore Bomb Conspiracy case, and his success in a number of civil cases, particularly the Dumraon adoption case, his reputation as a brilliant lawyer was established. A great legal luminary of his time, he used his acumen and ability in defending patriotic causes. He gave up his lucrative practice which was fetching him a princely income while at the height of his profession in order to throw his weight fully into the freedom struggle. Although revolutionary in his ideas, he was opposed to violence and was a staunch votary of constitutional methods. A founder of the Swaraj party within the freedom movement, he advocated fighting the British Raj from within the council chambers. True to his own statement “If I live, I live for Swaraj, if I die, I die for Swaraj“, Chittaranjan Das thought, dreamt, talked and worked for the freedom of India and nothing else till the very day of his untimely death on 16^th June 1925.
• A brilliant barrister, poet, journalist and philanthropist, Chittaranjan Das‘s claim to greatness lies more than anything else on his ardent patriotism. “Man truly reveals himself through his gift, and the best gift that Chittaranjan has left for his countrymen is not any particular political or social programme, but the creative force of a great aspiration that has taken a deathless form in the sacrifice which his life represented” said Rabindranath Tagore.
• In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Chittaranjan Das was one of the greatest men…… one of the jewels among the servants of India. His service and his sacrifice were matchless. May their memory ever remain with us and may his example inspire us to noble efforts.“

About : 

• Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875 at Nadiad in a typical peasant family of Gujarat. He grew up as the fourth in a family of six children. As a boy, he went to the local school, but could also ‘plough the land straight and deep.’ Like his brother, Vithalbhai, he chose the legal profession, but practiced independently as a successful district pleader till 1910, when he left for England to qualify as a barrister-at-law. Married at 16, he lost his wife when he was barely 33, after she had born him a daughter and a son.
• On return from England, he built up a flourishing practice at Ahmedabad as a criminal lawyer. It so happened that Gandhiji, who returned from South Africa in 1915, was invited to preside over the Godhra Session of the Gujarat Sabha, in 1917. Vallabhbhai Patel was its Secretary. The two men met never to part again. Sardar Patel was elected President of the Ahmedabad Municipality in 1924 by which time he had given up his lucrative practice at the bar to devote his entire time to public service. He galvanised the Gujarat provincial Congress Committee into a powerful unit of the National Congress, to which he was from then on, a tower of strength. He was elected President of the Congress at the Karachi Session in 1931. He suffered incarceration on several occasions and spent long years in prison fighting for the freedom of the country. His health broke down but his spirit remained undaunted and when India became independent he tackled the many problems which beset the country with tremendous energy and zeal. Indeed he proved to be one of the most outstanding statesmen of the century. He died in harness as the Home Minister of free India on December 15, 1950.
• The ideal of a free, strong, united India ever remained a consuming passion with this practical realist. A man of unbending will, his thought and action revolved round the life and example of Mahatma Gandhi. A powerful organizer and an unerring judge of men, he never failed to inspire confidence in the people. Of inflexible purpose and endowed with a statesmanlike clarity of thought, he had a way with matters of the State. If he had an iron hand he used it to hammer out a new nation, to restore peace and to strengthen unity. His indomitable will was born out of intense self-discipline. Forthright and fearless, he always knew his mind. Above all, he was a man of action without whom the history of Modern India might well have been different. 
• His finest hour was when he accomplished the integration of the Indian States with the Union. For him, integration meant not only accession by the rulers but also transfer of their power to the people. India has been unified as never before, and the saga of this achievement has passed into history. 
• His country was his first love and in the words of his daughter, ‘To the last, he was thinking of the nation‘. For all the toughness of his spirit and the rock-like firmness of his decision, one could yet say :
  • His life was gentle; and the elements
    So mixed in him that Nature might stand up
    And say to all the world, ‘This was a man’.

Issued for : 1965 is the second year in Canada‘s history that distinctive Christmas postage stamps have been issued. The first were released in 1964.

Design : The design is a symbolic and formal presentation of the traditional gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. A blend of ancient symbolism in the presents and of a modern form of art in the stylized graphics was selected to underscore the continuing ideals and celebrations of Christmas. In Canada the Yuletide Season is a joyous one, a family holiday as well as a religious festival. Just as the three wise men journeyed to Bethlehem on that first Christmas almost two thousand years ago, so today children hang up their stockings with keen anticipation and friends exchange gifts in celebration of Christmas.
