About :

  • The West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore came into being as a realisation of the recommendation of the Commission on National Education to establish a Technical University in each Wing of the country. In West Pakistan, because of the initial facilities it offered, the Government College of Engineering and Technology, Lahore which was started in March, 1923 was upgraded to serve as a starting point for the proposed University. The College had been affiliated with the University of the Punjab and was awarding B.Sc. degrees in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Mining Engineering.
  • The West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore on its establishment assumed the functions of holding examinations and awarding degrees. It has also introduced a number of new courses. Bachelor courses in Chemical Engineering and Architecture were started from the session 1962-63 and in Town Planning from the session 1963-64. The enrolment of students is also being increased gradually. By the end of Third Plan period the total students population is estimated to be 2,500 as against 447 in 1960.
  • To meet the requirements of the new industries expected to come up during the Third Plan period post-graduate courses leading to M.Sc. degrees in Public Health Engineering, Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Structural Engineering, Hydraulics and Irrigation Engineering, Highway Engineering, Geodetic Surveying, Automobile Engineering, Mechanics of Machines, Production Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Petroleum Engineering (Refining), Glass and Ceramics Engineering and Town Planning will be started. Courses leading to Ph.D. degrees will be started after 1970 when M.Sc. Courses would have been fully established.
  • The proposed expansion of courses and increase in students enrolment have necessitated long term development. According to the proposals now under active considerations of the Government the estimated total cost of the project would work out to nearly Rs. 550 lacs to be spent during the Second and Third Plan periods on acquisition of more land adjacent to the existing Campus, construction of new buildings and purchase of equipment for infrastructure and research laboratories. The construction work has already been taken in hand. Residences for 48 teachers are nearing completion and construction of 2 hostels for 500 students is being taken up. This will be followed by construction of new Academic Blocks, Laboratories, Hostels, Student Teacher Centre and Residences for teaching and administrative staff besides Hospital, Market etc.
  • The University has sent up-to-date 26 teachers for higher studies and teaching in U.K., Canada and the United States. At the time of establishment of the University in 1961 there was three Ph.D.s on the staff and now the number has increased to ten. It is proposed to send 87 more teachers for getting higher education leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees during the Third Five Year Plan period.
  • With the compliments of the Director-General, Pakistan Post Office, Karachi.

About :

  • The 22nd International Geological Congress met for the first time in Asia at New Delhi, between the 14th and 22nd December, 1964. Members from about 92 countries attended. It was the biggest International Scientific Congress ever held in Asia.
  • The Congress was established in 1875 with the purpose of contributing to “the advancement of investigations relating to the study of the Earth, considered from theoretical and practical points of view“. The first session was held in 1878 in Paris; subsequent sessions have met every 3 or 4 years, in different cities of the world.
  • In the New Delhi Congress, papers on recent advances in different aspects of geology will be discussed in sixteen sections. The meetings of various commissions and affiliated bodies of the Congress and the International Union of Geological Sciences (founded in 1960), will be held at the same time. The papers read at the meetings and the discussions arising therefrom, will be published subsequently.
  • An important feature of the International Geological Congress, was the large number of excursions of geological interest, being organised all over the country, both before and after the session.

About :

  • The Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department issued a special postage stamp in commemoration of Saint Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, on the 2nd December 1964, which coincides with the arrival of His Holiness Pope Paul VI in India.
  • A completely authentic historical account of life of St. Thomas Didymus, one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, introduced Christianity into India. Experts generally agree that he took the northwestern route to India and arrived about 52 A.D. He then proceeded to the southern coast and preached the Christian faith among the people of South India. There are some ancient monuments in Southern India, which are connected with St. Thomas. Chief among these are the St. Thomas Mount where, it is said, he met his death and the San Thome Cathedral at Madras, which has been reacted on the spot where he was buried.

About :

  • ISO came in being in 1946 as the successor to the International Federation of the National Standardization Association (ISA). Its object is :

“to promote the development of standards in the world with a view to facilitating international exchange of goods and services and to developing mutual co-operation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity”.

  • At present, 51 Standards Organizations from as many countries constitute the membership of the ISO. Its work is carried out through 108 Technical Committees and their Sub-committees and working groups.
  • Considering the vital importance pf standardization in industrial developments and promotion of international trade, India has been actively participating in the work of ISO ever since its inception in 1946. Thus, the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) today takes part in 78 of the 108 technical committees of ISO and holds the secretariats of three of the ISO Technical Committees, namely, Lac, Mica and Pictorial Markings for Handling of Goods, and of 4 sub-committees and 6 working groups.
  • The technical fields in which international standardization will be under consideration at the New Delhi meetings will include subjects of primary interest to India, such as agricultural food products like spices, condiments and stimulant foods, steel, rubber, vetiver oil, screw threads, bolts, nuts and, accessories, and sampling of iron and manganese ores.
  • This is the first time that a meeting of the General Assembly of the ISO is being held in Asia. The previous meetings were held at Paris (1949), New York (1952), Stockholm (1955), Harrogate (1958) and Helsinki (1961).

About :

  • “Today’s children are to–morrow’s citizens”. Children are admittedly a delicate, sensitive but a virtually important section of national life demanding tremendous effort, loving thought and immense care. Conscious of its responsibilities towards children, Pakistan along with a number of other nations, observes the first Monday in October every year as the “Universal Children Day”. This year the day falls on the 5th October, 1964.
  • The purpose of celebrating Universal Children Day is to remind ourselves of our duties towards children, as parents, as teachers and as citizens. The programme also aims at inculcating in children a sense of responsibility towards others and of encouraging them to develop to the fullest, their inherent faculties.
  • In Pakistan the Day is sponsored by the Pakistan Council for Child Welfare in co-operation with the Central and Provincial Governments, the social welfare agencies, educational and other civic agencies of the country. The Council is the watchdog for the child. It studies and points out the weaknesses in the social structure and is constantly drawing the attention of the Government, the public and the parents to the special need of children. This is being done through the celebration of the Universal Children Day, through conferences, through studies and recommendations, through publications and press and radio publicity. The council takes a keen interest in promoting talent in children. It also organises periodical exhibitions of their paintings and hand work.
  • The council is also running two pilot services in Karachi. These services are provided through the “Ashiana” and the “Nasheman”. The East–Pakistan Council of Child Welfare has now set up the first rehabilitation centre for disabled children in Dacca. “Nasheman” is a home for girls who are in need of care and protection. Here the girls are given education and training in home-crafts according to their special needs and problems. In “Ashiana” residential care is given to foundling babies and also to babies whose parents are temporarily unable to adequate arrangements for them due to some emergency such as the sickness or death of the mother.
  • It is most encouraging to see how happy and thriving are all the babies who have been placed in families.
  • With the compliments of the Director-General, Pakistan Post Office, Karachi.
