About :

  • The Tadoba Andhari National Park and Tiger Reserve is one of the finest & largest National Parks in Maharashtra. It is an important Project Tiger Reserves in India. This beautiful natural area is situated close to Chandrapur District of Maharashtra. It was in 1955 when 116.55 sq. km. of the area was declared a National Park. Later, the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created in the adjacent forests in 1986. In 1995, both the park and the sanctuary were merged to establish the present tiger reserve.
  • The Tadoba Andhari National Park has an endless treasure trove of large number of species of trees & plants and wildlife like panthers, tigers, hyenas, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, barking deer, bison, sambar, to name a few. Overshadowed by teak & bamboo, and with a magical landscape of rugged cliffs, marshlands, lakes, etc., it has a large variety of flora and fauna, which makes it a popular tourist spot.
  • The name ‘Tadoba’ is derived from the name of God “Tadoba” or “Taru”. The Gond kings were known to have once ruled the forests in the vicinity of the Chimur hills. It is believed that Taru was a village chief who was killed in a fierce encounter with a tiger and a shrine was built in his memory. The name “Andhari” is derived from the Andhari river which flows through the Park.
  • The Andhari River, Erai Dam, Kolsa Lake, Junoria Lake and the Tadoba Lake form the lifeline of the park. The river and water storage systems provide year long supply of fresh water to this amazing ecosystem. Besides, small water bodies, rivulets and creeks also exist in the confines of the dense forests, in plains, and, in the hills. Man made water holes and small dams in the area add to the life sustaining environment. These factors explain the prolific bio diversity of the region.
  • The vegetation of the forest is of Southern tropical dry deciduous type. Teak is the prominent tree species in the Tadoba forest. Besides teak, some other common trees found in the Park are Ain (Crocodile Bark), Bija, Dhaudab, Hald, Salai, Semal, Shisham, Mahua Madhuca (Crepe Myrtle) and Bamboo. In addition, Axlewood Anogeissus Latifolia, a fire-resistant species, is also found here, along with Buteamonosperma, which adds vivacious color to this forest. Arjun trees are also found at Panchadhara.
  • A major part of this forest is in the hilly area of the Chimur Hills, and the Andhari sanctuary covers Moharali & Kolsa ranges. As a result, there are many hillocks and terrains which provide shelter to wild animals. Besides the species of Bengal Tiger, this park is home to other mammals like Sloth Bear, Leopard, Rusty Spotted Cat, Gaur (Indian Bison), Indian Mouse Deer, Ratel, Sambar, Wild Pig, Spotted Deer, Flying Squirrel, Four Horned Antelope, to name a few. As soon the night falls, the Small Indian Civet, the Palm Civet, the Ratel, and the Flying squirrel make their presence felt.
  • Tadoba National Park is a popular tiger reserve that is popularly known as ‘The Land of Tigers‘ as large number of tigers are found here. The total area under the Project Tiger includes the core area and the buffer zone. The core area concept denotes critical tiger habitat, which is subject to intense conservation measures with minimal human intervention.
  • Historically, the Bengal Tiger is known to have arrived in the Indian Subcontinent approximately 12,000 years ago. The Bengal tiger’s coat is yellow to light orange, with stripes ranging from dark brown to black; the belly and the interior parts of the limbs are white, and the tail is orange with black rings. The white tiger is a recessive mutant of the Bengal tiger, which is reported in the wild from time to time in Assam, Bengal, Bihar and especially from the former State of Rewa.
  • Male Bengal tigers have an average total length of 270 to 310 cm (110 to 120 in) including the tail, while females measure 240 to 265 cm (94 to 104 in) on an average. The tail is typically 85 to 110 cm (33 to 43 in) long, and on an average, tigers are 90 to 110 cm (35 to 43 in) in height at the shoulders. The weight of males ranges from 180 to 258 kg (397 to 569 lb), while that of the females ranges from 100 to 160 kg (220 to 350 lb).
  • Bengal tigers are territorial, and except for the core unit of mother and cub, they are solitary creatures. Each male tiger needs a large territory in which to hunt and mate. Once a Bengal establishes a home range, it usually sticks to it, and remains aware and respectful of other tiger’s ranges. However, due to rapid industrial development and continuing poaching activities during the last century, a sizable percentage of the tiger population, not only in India, but across the World, has been reducing substantially. At present the Bengal Tiger is listed under “Endangered” category in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) red list of threatened species.
  • Tigers are a conservation dependent species. The Bengal tiger subspecies is at the top of the food chain in the wild. Tigers are also a vital link in maintaining the rich diversity of nature. When tigers are protected, we have so much more. For example, with just one tiger, we protect around 25,000 acres of forest. These ecosystems supply both nature and people with fresh water, food, and health.

About :

  • The Silent Valley, situated in South Western Ghats, is one among the world’s ten “Hottest Biodiversity Hot Spots” and is believed to be the sole surviving bit of virgin tropical rain forests in India. Located about 80 km north east of Palakkad, Kerala, the 8952 sq km forest was declared a National Park on 14th November 1984 and now it forms part of the core of Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve.
  • The Silent Valley forests go back beyond history to reflect the mythological past of India. It is reflected in the names still current : Sairandhrivanam, the alternate name of the forests derived from Draupadi‘s name and the Kunthi River named after the mother of the Pandavas.
  • The evolutionary age of Silent Valley, the evergreen rain forests, is believed to be more than 50 million years. This is a cliff forest cut off on all sides by steep ridges and escarpments. The topographic isolation of Silent Valley has prevented human habitation, allowing the forest to remain untouched and to emerge as an ecological oasis, preserving the flora and fauna. It is not clear who named it the “Silent Valley”. It is believed that the name owes Its origin to the relative absence of the cicadas which normally provide a distinctive sound in the forest environment.
  • The flora of the Valley includes about 1000 species of flowering plants, 107 species of orchids that include rare, endemic and endangered forms, 100 species of ferns and fern allies, 200 liverworts, 75 lichens and about 200 algae. The orchids spring amidst the vegetation, from tree trunks and from crevices of rocks. They bloom in an abundance of colours and shape. Ipsea Malabarica – an endemic ground orchid which has been lost and found after one and quarter century, is a testament to excellent forest conservation values.
  • This valley is home to 23 mammalian species including three endangered ones: the tiger, the lion tailed macaque and the Nilgiri langur. Other than the elephant, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, common langur, Nilgiri tahr, tiger, leopard, sloth bear, Gaur, wild dog, etc., The Silent Valley is home to birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and insects whose variety and profusion is an enduring delight – the colour and abundance virtually impossible to capture or recreate through brush and paint or on camera in its entirety.
  • The rich and virgin forest underwent a tumultuous phase in its history during 1977-80 when the Silent Valley Hydroelectric Project (SVHP) was proposed. This project would have submerged 830 hectares of forest. The struggle that followed to preserve the forest was perhaps one of the most successful stories of protection of the environment, capturing the imagination of writers, artists, scientists, politicians, nongovernmental organisations, media and the public alike. It became an irrepressible people’s movement which resulted in saving the Silent Valley and led to the declaration of the Silent Valley as a National Park by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister in 1983. Today it is a symbol of a people’s campaign for conservation, the flagship of ecological arid environmental awakening in India.
  • Dr. Salim Ali observed that “Silent Valley” is not just an evergreen forest, it is a very fine example of one of the richest, most threatened and least studied habitat in earth.
  • Silent Valley exudes a quiet grandeur and exuberance of life. In her heart many songs lie in a deep silence. Silent Valley, indeed, is a poem on earth and much more. It is a banner to carry the environmental conscience ahead.

About :

  • The Sundarbans (the beautiful forest or forest of Sundari trees) is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world. It got inscripted as a “UNESCO World Heritage Site” in 1997 and was designated a “Ramsar Site” in 1992.
  • The Sundarbans is a cluster of islands forming the largest block of littoral forest, located in the southwest corner of Bangladesh. It lies on the GangesBrahmaputra Delta at the point where it merges with the Bay of Bengal. The forest lies a little south to the Tropic of Cancer between the latitudes 21°30′ N and 22°30′ N, and longitudes 89°00′ E and 89°55′ E.
  • The Sundarbans was originally measured (about 200 years ago) to be about of 16,700 sq. km. Now it has dwindled to about 1/3 of the original size. Because of the partition of India, Bangladesh received about 2/3 of the forest; the rest is on the Indian side. It is now estimated to be about 4,110 sq. km. of which about 1,700 sq. km. is occupied by waterbodies. The Sundarbans is bounded in the north by Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira districts, in the south by the Bay of Bengal, in the east by Baleswar (or Haringhata) river of Perojpur district, and in the west by Raimangal and Hariabhanga rivers which partially form Bangladesh boundary with West Bengal, India.
  • The climate in the Sundarbans is moderate. Air is humid. Full monsoon is from June to September. The average annual maximum and minimum temperature vary between 30°C and 21°C. The annual rainfall is in the range of 1640 to 2000 mm. During ebb-tide the forest becomes bare by 6-7 feet and at high tide the entire territory of the forest floats on water.
  • The flora of the Sundarbans is largely of mangrove type. More than 334 species of trees, plants and shrubs grow in this forest. Most trees have pneumatophores for aerial respiration. The prominent species is Sundari and the others flora include Gewa, Keora, Goran, Golpata, Passur etc.
  • The Sundarbans also hosts a large variety of animals. Within the forest habitats there are about 50 species of mammals, about 320 species of inland and migratory birds, about 50 species of reptiles, 8 species of amphibians and about 40 species of fish. It is also a centre of economic activities, such as extraction of timber, fishing and collection of honey.
  • Thousands of meandering streams, creeks, rivers and estuaries have enhanced its charms. Sundarbans is the natural habitat of the world famous and ruthless, yet majestic and graceful Royal Bengal Tiger, spotted dear, crocodiles, jungle fowl, wild boar, lizards, rhesus monkey, pythons and an innumerable variety of beautiful birds. Migratory flock of Siberian ducks flying over thousands of sail boats loaded with timber, golpata, honey, shell and fish add to the serene natural beauty of the Sundarbans. With the approach of the evening herds of deer make for the drinking glades, where boisterous monkeys shower keora leaves from above for sumptuous meal for the deer. For the botanist, the lover of nature, the poet and the painter this land provides a variety of wonders for which they all crave.
  • The Sundarbans has been recognised globally for its importance as reservoir of biodiversity. It is an abundant natural resource for a number of leisure, travel and research activities. With its array of trees and wildlife the forest is a showpiece of natural history. A visit to Bangladesh would remain incomplete if the Sundarbans did not appear in the itinerary. The noteworthy beauty spots of the Sundarbans are, Katka, Hironpoint, Kachikhali, Dublar Char (Island), Tin Kona Island etc.

About :

  • India’s rich biodiversity has fascinated people down the ages. India can boast of more than 500 species of mammals, 2,000 species of birds, 500 species of reptiles, and 30,000 species of insects. India also have an ingrained tradition of conservation stretching back in history.
  • However, the pressures of an increasing population have led to widespread changes in land ways. This has, in effect, led to a gradual encroachment and decimation of forest cover and water bodies, resulting in the destruction of the natural habitat which has sustained wildlife down the centuries.
  • While shooting for sport ‘Shikar’, posed the greatest threat to wildlife in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is the destruction of habitat and illegal poaching for commerce that present the major problems to conservation today.
  • Realizing the danger, sanctuaries for protecting the wildlife, along with their natural habitat, were set up in India from the first half of the 20th century itself and today there are more than 450 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 85 National Parks, around the country.
  • A comprehensive legislation called the ‘Wildlife Protection Act’ was enacted in 1972 for providing legal protection to wildlife, and to endangered species of fauna in particular, as protecting our natural heritage and preventing the extinction of increasingly rare and endangered species of animals like the one-horned Indian Rhinoceros, the Indian Elephant, the Tiger, and the Musk Deer among other, assumed national importance.
  • Under this Act, the State Governments are empowered to declare any area as a Sanctuary or a National Park for the purpose of protecting and conserving wildlife and the environment. All National Parks and Sanctuaries are however not alike. While some have been created to protect certain specific rare and endangered species, some are famous for the richness and variety of their flora as well as fauna.
  • Bandipur National Park :
    • The Bandipur National Park is a beautiful forest reserve located in Karnataka. It lies in the shadow of the Western Ghats and spreads across an area of about 875 sq. km. at a height of 780-1455 m above sea level. A moderate climate and diverse geographical features support a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. Declared a National Park under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1974, this National Park is best known for its elephant herds and Sandalwood trees. A mix of deciduous and evergreen forests and scrubland supported by the waters of the Moyar River, this forest reserve is home to Indian Elephant, Tiger, Gaur, Sambar, Chital, Four Horned Antelope, Wild Pig, Black-Naped Hare and the Indian Porcupine. The Park is also rich in avian population with an abundance of birds like the Peafowl, and game birds like the Grey Jungle Fowl, Red Spur Fowl, etc.
  • Mudumalai National Park :
    • The Mudumalai National Park lies in the state of Tamil Nadu and is contiguous to the Bandipur National Park, separated by the river Moyar that flows between the two. It is located on a 1000 Mtr. high plateau at the base of the Nilgiri hills with a core area of 104 sq. km. and was declared as a National Park in the year 1990. Just 321 sq. km. in area, the hilly terrain provides diverse habitats sustaining a great variety of wildlife including the Tiger, Leopard, Bear, Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Four-Horned Antelope, Black Buck, Hyena, Wild Dog, Porcupine, Jackal, Python etc. Rich in bird life, most families of birds found in the Indian sub-continent including some uncommon and rare species like the Grey Jungle Fowl, Red Spur Fowl, Grey Partridge, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Magpie Robin, Spotted Babbler, Pigeons, Brown Dove, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Harriers, Falcons and King Vulture, etc. may be sighted in the Park area, comprising a mixture of rain forest, evergreen, and deciduous forest and scrubland, with lofty as well as stunted trees, grass covered hills and marshy swamps. Bamboos, natural teak, sandalwood trees, slender Indian laburnum, flame of the forest are some of the better known flora which abound.
  • Bandhavgarh National Park :
    • The Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh is primarily known for its tiger population. The former hunting reserve of the royal family of Rewa, Bandhavgarh was declared as a National Park in 1968. Covering an area of 542.40 sq. km. the forest area comprising of teak forest, grasslands and scrubland has about 22 mammal species and about 250 bird species. This is the place where the famous white tigers were discovered. Apart from the tiger, the other animals inhabiting this hilly Parkland include the Nilgai, Chausingha, Chital, Chinkara, Black Buck and Wild Boar, as well as two primate species, the Rhesus Macaque and the Hanuman Langur.
  • Periyar National Park :
    • The Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve was established in the verdant stretches of Kerala in 1895 and declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 777 sq. km. of which 360 sq. km. is under dense and evergreen forest cover. Deriving its name from the vast and stunningly beautiful Periyar Lake, the habitat diversity is reflected in the variety of fauna. There are 35 species of mammals in the Park including its major attraction, the Indian Elephant, the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque which is confined to the evergreens in the interior as well as the Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Flying Squirrel, Wild Boar, and Barking Deer. Periyar is also the only habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, which is not seen easily. This National Park is also rich in birds with 285 species including the Hornbill, Stork, Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Raptor, Cormorant and the Darter.

A commemorative postage stamp on the Forges du Saint-Maurice, first successful iron-working industry in New France and Canadas first industrial complex :

First Successful Iron-working Industry in New France, CanadaIssued by Canada

Issued on Aug 19, 1988

About the Stamp Design : The stamp design is the result of a collaborative effort by illustrator Hélène Racicot and graphic designer Michèle Cayer, both of Montreal, and engraver Yves Baril of the Canadian Bank Note Company in Ottawa. The three artists combined their talents to depict the activity that went on near the ironworks’ blast furnace. Printed in a combination of steel engraving and two-colour lithography, the design manages to convey a sense of time and place.

Type : Stamp, Postal Used

Colour : Multi Colour

Denomination : 37 Cents

About :

  • Les Forges du Saint-Maurice – the Saint-Maurice ironworks – were built near TroisRivières, Quebec, at a time when France‘s protectionist policy ceased to be a hindrance to the industrial development of the colony of New France. Their construction was primarily the result of efforts by Gilles Hocquart, who served as Intendant of New France from 1729 to 1748.
  • The abundant natural resources found on the territory of the Forges ensured the profitability of the ironsmelting company. The Forges formed an industrial complex which, at its height, had a population of 425.
  • It is rare for a single site to have all the elements needed to develop an industry of this scale. The energy required to operate the Forges came from the Lavoir Creek, which fed down through a series of terraces. Through a system of dams which formed natural basins, the water was used to drive the overshot wheels, which, in turn, powered the bellows and hammers. Local iron ore was melted down with the charcoal made of wood taken from the territory of the Forges.
  • The products’ fine reputation depended upon the quality of the work performed by the ironsmiths, who were direct descendants of craftsmen from Burgundy and FrancheComté. However, the ironworks was forced to finally succumb to the new coke based iron and steel industry, and in 1883, after 150 years of production, closed its doors for good. The site became a National Historic Park in 1973.

About :

  • Corbett National Park which was established on August 8, 1936 is the country’s first National Park. Originally named The Hailey National Park after Sir Malcolm Hailey, the Governor of the United Provinces, who had taken a keen interest in the creation of this park. It was renamed the Ramganga National Park after independence. Considering Jim Corbett’s special contribution in creation of this park, its name was again changed to Corbett National Park after this famous hunter, author and wildlife conservationist who died in 1955.
  • The Park roughly trapezoidal in shape, is situated in the central foot-hills of the Himalayas within the civil districts of Nainital and Garhwal, comprising a total area of 520.82 sq. kms. Of which 329.98 sq. kms. constitute the tranquil core or the sanctorum, and the rest forming the buffer. The river Ramganga is the only major perennial source of water. Corbett National Park, one of the best potential habitats of the Tiger in the Himalayan Region and probably of the whole of India with its brightest promise of successful perpetuations of ‘Stripes’, and forming almost a compact biomass fairly free from biotic interference, was aptly given the unique distinction of being chosen during April 1973 as the venue for the inauguration of the launching of the famous and now prestigious project called ‘Project Tiger’. Project Tiger started functioning in the Park with effect from February, 1974.
  • The Corbett National Park is extremely rich and varied both in its flora and fauna composition. More than 500 species of ferns and flowering plants have been recorded.
  • The Park has a great a variety of fauna on account of diversity of cover and available food:
    • (i) Pisces: The river Ramganga sustains a variety of fish, the ‘mahaseer’ (Barbus tor) being the main species found throughout the length of the river. The other important species are ‘Kalimachi’ (Barbus Chilinodes), ‘Kalabasu’ (Labeo calbasu), ‘Chilwa’ (Oxygaster bacaila), ‘Goonch’ (Bagarius bagarius).
    • (ii) Reptiles: Aquatic reptiles found in the Park are ‘magar’ or marsh crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris), ‘gharial’ (Gavialis gangeticus) and water monitor (Varanus salvator). Monitor lizard ‘goh’ (Varanus bengalensis) is quite common. Snakes worthy of mention are King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), common krait (Bungarus caeruleus), Cobra (Naja naja), Russell’s Viper (Vipera russelli) and Python (Python molurus).
    • (iii) Birds: The Park is very rich in avifauna – Zoological survey of India have recorded over 585 species of resident and migratory birds. The newly created Ramganga reservoir has started attracting lots of ducks, storks, cormorants and even gulls.
    • (iv) Mammals: Among the primates ‘langur’ (Presbytis entellus) and rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) are quite common and are associates of principal deer species ‘Cheetal’ or spotted dear (Axis axis). ‘Sambar’ (Cervus unicolor), ‘Hogodeer’ (Axis porcinus), ‘Barking Deer’ (Muntiacus muntjak) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) are fairly numerous and form the main prey base over which the predators, tiger (Panthera tigris) and leopard (Panthera pardus) thrive. Ghoral (Naemorhedus goral) is found on steeper slopes. Otter (Lutra lutra) is common. Jungle cat (Felis chaus), leopard cat (Felis bengalensis), Jackal (Canis aureus), Sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), porcupine (Hystrix indica) and hare (Lepus nigricollis) are the other common mammals of the Park.
  • The asiatic elephants are wide spread in the Park right from November to June. During the rainy season they migrate to other forest areas outside leaving a few herds inside the Park.
