Issued for : The Department of Posts is proud to release a commemorative stamp celebrating 80 years of the United Nations. This stamp symbolises India’s commitment to global cooperation, peace, and the shared ideals of the United Nations over eight decades.

Design : To celebrate 80 Years of the United Nations, a nationwide stamp design competition was organized by the Department of Posts in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs and MyGov. Approximately 7.4 lakh students participated, creatively expressing India’s vision of global leadership and multilateralism. The design by Ms. Shrestha Majumdar is featured on the commemorative stamp. Additionally, artworks by Ms. Anshika Jain and Ms. Rollie Sharma have been selected for the First Day Cover and Brochure. This initiative reflects young India’s commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable global progress.

• Department of Posts has previously released commemorative postage stamps on the UN’s 9^th, 40^th, 50^th, and 75^th anniversaries in 1954, 1985, 1995, and 2020, respectively. Department of Posts and the United Nations Postal Administration jointly issued stamps for the UN Women HeForShe solidarity movement in 2016. United Nations Postal Administration released a commemorative Diwali stamp in 2018 and a definitive stamp on the occasion of the 150^th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019.
• India and the UN share a commitment to multilateralism and dialogue, viewing them as essential to meeting global challenges. As the world’s largest democracy and an active member of the UN, India has advanced UN goals in peacebuilding and peacekeeping, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, climate action, disarmament, human rights, health, migration, cybersecurity, space, and frontier technologies like Artificial Intelligence.
• Over recent years, India’s engagement with the UN has expanded in scope. In 2025, India hosted the “Conference on Women Peacekeepers from the Global South” in New Delhi, bringing together women peacekeepers from 35 countries to address gender-inclusive peace operations. India remains one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping, with more than 290,000 Indian peacekeepers deployed on over 50 missions to date.

• Earlier collaborations include stamps released by India on 24^th October, 1954 on the occasion of the United Nations Day; on 24^th October, 1985 to celebrate the 40^th anniversary of the United Nations and on 26^th June, 1995 to mark 50 years of the United Nations.
• In the recent past, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) released a set of stamps featuring endangered migratory species, from Gandhinagar, India on 17^th February, 2020. A Definitive stamp was released by it on 2^nd October, 2019 on the occasion of the 150^th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and a stamp on Diwali, the festival of lights, on 19^th October, 2018. India Post and the UNPA jointly issued the HeForShe postage stamp to promote gender equality on 8^th March, 2016.

• While addressing the 69^th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014, the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi urged the world community to adopt an International Day of Yoga.

• On December 11, 2014, the 193 member U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) approved the proposal by consensus with a record 177 co-sponsoring countries, a resolution to establish 21^st June as ‘International Day of Yoga’. In its resolution, the UNGA recognized that Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being and recognised the requirement of wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practicing Yoga for the health of the world population. Yoga also brings harmony in all walks of life and is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle-related disorders.
  
• Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science for healthy living. The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning “to join”, “to yoke” or “to unite”. According to Yogic scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. One who experiences this oneness of existence is said to be “in Yoga” and is termed as a yogi who has attained a state of freedom, referred to as mukti, nirvana, kaivalya or moksha.
  
• “Yoga” also refers to an inner science comprising of a variety of methods through which human beings can achieve union between the body and mind to attain self-realisation. The aim of Yoga practice (sadhana) is to overcome all kinds of sufferings that lead to a sense of freedom in every walk of life with holistic health, happiness and harmony.
  
• The science of Yoga has its origin thousands of years ago. According to Yogic lore, Shiva is seen as the first yogi or adiyogi and the first guru or adi guru. Though Yoga is believed to have been practiced in the pre-Vedic period, the great sage Maharishi Patanjali is believed to have systemised and codified the then existing Yogic practices, then meaning and the related knowledge through his Yoga sutras.
  
• After Patanjali, many Sages and Yoga Masters have contributed towards the preservation and development of the field through their well-documented practices and literature. More and more people across the globe have continued to adopt the practice of Yoga.
  
• Yoga works on the level of one’s body, mind, emotion and energy. This has given rise to four broad classifications of Yoga: Karma Yoga where we utilize the body; Jnana Yoga where we utilize the mind; Bhakti Yoga where we utilize the emotion and Kriya Yoga where we utilize the energy. Each system of Yoga practiced falls within the gamut of one or more of these categories.
  
• The different philosophies, traditions, lineages and guru–shishya paramparas of Yoga have led to the emergence of different traditional schools. Each school has its own approach and practices that would lead to the ultimate aim and objectives of Yoga.

• Bangladesh attained membership to the United Nations on 17 September 1974 under the visionary leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman. In his maiden address to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 25 September 1974, delivered in Bangla in his signature style, the Father of the Nation made a clarion call for peace, justice and reconciliation to prevail for a world free of “poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy and unemployment”. While his epoch-making speech of 7 March 1971 had heralded the birth of an independent nation in unequivocal terms, Bangabandhu’s first and only statement at the UN humbly yet firmly announced to the comity of nations the joining of a new member state that would go on to distinguish itself for its ability to endure and flourish through peace, friendship and cooperation with all members of the international community.
• Bangabandhu’s iconic image of delivering his address to the 29^th UNGA session is indeed the most befitting tribute to celebrate the undying commitment, understanding and responsiveness that the people of Bangladesh had demonstrated over the last forty years to redeem his conviction in the ultimate triumph of the noble human ideals as enshrined in the UN Charter.

• On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration is recognition of the fact that the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world and reaffirmation of faith, of the peoples of United Nations in the Fundamental human rights.
  
• The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, states in clear and simple terms the rights which belong equally to every person. It inter alia envisages that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and are entitled to enjoy all rights and freedoms set forth in the declaration without distinction of any kind. Everyone has right to life, liberty and security of person, equality before law and equal protection of law and freedom of thought, conscience, religion, opinion and expression. The declaration enunciates various civil, economic, social and cultural rights.
  
• The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories.
  
• Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. Disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people.
  
• It is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law. It is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations. The people of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom. Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in cooperation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms. A common understanding of these right and freedoms is of the greatest important for the full realization of this pledge.
  
• The theme for 2008. “Dignity and justice for all of us” reinforces the vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a commitment to universal dignity and justice. It is not a luxury or a wish-list. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its core values, inherent human dignity, non-discrimination, equality, fairness and universality, apply to everyone, everywhere and always. The declaration is universal, enduring and vibrant, and it concerns us all.
  
• The National Human Rights Commission of India is a fully compliant internationally accepted Paris Principles for independent and autonomous National Human Rights Institution. The National Human Rights Commission of India was constituted under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993 for better protection and promotion of human rights. • The digital revolution in information and communication technologies has created the platform for a free flow of information, ideas and knowledge across the globe. This revolution has made a profound impression on the way the world functions and is critical to both the developed world as a business and social tool and the developing world as a passport to equitable participation, as well as economic, social and educational development.
• World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a formal United Nations Summit at the level of Heads of State and Government. It is the result of an initiative by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) further endorsed by the United Nation’s General Assembly (Resolution 56/1983) in 2001. Its aim is to develop a common vision and understanding of the Global Information Society and to draw up a strategic Plan of Action for concerted development towards realizing this vision. The purpose of the World Summit on the Information Society is to ensure that these benefits are accessible to all while promoting specific advantages in areas such as e-strategies, e-commerce, e-health, education, literacy, cultural diversity, gender equality, sustainable development and environmental protection.
• The process is divided in two phases and the first phase of the summit was held in Geneva from 10 to 12 December 2003, where the foundations were laid by reaching agreement on a Declaration of Principles and a plan of action which form the basis for a global common approach towards the Information Society of all United Nations Member States where the Declaration of Principles presents a vision of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). At WSIS Geneva in December 2003, World leaders declared “our common desire and commitment to build a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society, where everyone can create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge, enabling individuals, communities and peoples to achieve their full potential in promoting their sustainable development and improving their quality of life, premised on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and respecting fully and upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”.
• The Road to Tunis entails a process of monitoring and evaluation of the progress of feasible actions laid out in the Geneva Plan and a concrete set of deliverables that must be achieved by the time the Summit meets again in Tunis on 16 to 18 November 2005. Efforts are now being made to put the Plan of Action into motion and working groups are being set up to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance and financing mechanisms.
• United Nations Summits have been held on a variety of issues that have commanded the attention of the world, including the pioneering World Summit for Children (1990), the Earth Summit on Environment and Development (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), the World Conference on Human Rights (Vienna, 1993), the International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 1994), the World Summit for Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995), the International Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995), and the Financing for Development Conference (Monterrey, Mexico, 2002). The Millennium Summit (New York, 2000) brought together world leaders in a unique display of solidarity to achieve far-reaching development goals by 2015.
• The objective of the WSIS is to effectively assist the United Nations in fulfilling the goals of the Millennium Declaration. The ultimate objective is to turn the vision of an inclusive and equitable Information Society into reality. This is only possible when the digital revolution is harnessed into extending the frontiers of the global village as well as facilitating the free flow of knowledge and information for economic and social development.

Design : The stamp designs for the UN International Day of Peace, 2005, have been prepared by children who participated in the United Nations global peace poster contest which was sponsored by the Lions Clubs International, who have given the United Nations Postal Administration the exclusive right to use the artwork for United Nations postage stamps. The United Nations in turn has allowed postal administrations around the world to use these designs from which a selection has been made.

• The United Nations is the only organization in the world that is permitted to issue postage stamps though it is neither a country nor a territory. It is also the only postal authority to issue stamps in three different currencies, namely US Dollars, Swiss Francs and Austrian Schillings.
• The idea of the United Nations issuing its own stamps was first proposed by Argentina in 1947. An agreement with the United States Postal authorities was executed in 1951 and the first United Nations stamps were issued in US Dollar denominations on United Nations Day, 24 October 1951. The stamps were an immediate success and sold out within days. Similar postal agreements were subsequently made with the Swiss and Austrian authorities and since 1979, United Nations stamps are issued simultaneously at United Nations Offices in New York, Geneva and Vienna.
• In the 55^th Session of the United Nations General Assembly it was decided to observe 21^st of September of each year, as the International Day of Peace. Since then the United Nations Postal Administration has developed a unique concept which allows all Postal Administrations to participate and spread the message of peace throughout the world through postage stamps.
• Apart from being messengers of peace, the United Nations stamps also draw attention to significant world problems and the United Nations’ commitment to serve humanity by promoting improvements in areas like human rights, dignity of labour, child welfare, food for all, clean environment, health, world peace etc.
• The beauty, uniqueness and special significance of United Nations stamps, combined with their individual often intriguing histories, continue to be a source of fascination and make the stamps of great value for philatelists and collectors. The United Nations stamps are appreciated by the collectors not only for their innovative designs and universal themes, but also because it is possible to collect every United Nations stamp ever issued. The United Nations Postal Administration has issued over one thousand stamps till date.
• The future of philately, like the future of the world, rests with today’s youth. Keeping this in view, the United Nations Postal Administration is encouraging children to take up philately as a recreational hobby which will also help spread the message of the United Nations by introducing fun packs and special stamp albums for children.
• The United Nations stamps are miniature works of art which have won international design awards. They are created by professional artists as well as amateur and child artists from around the world, and are printed around the world in different countries.

• Indian participation in the United Nations Peacekeeping is as old as the history of the UN Peacekeeping itself and goes back over five decades. So far, the Indian Army has participated in 36 Peacekeeping Missions with more than 70,000 troops. India is amongst the largest contributors to the UN Peacekeeping Operations.
• The most difficult areas across the world and the range of sensitive Peacekeeping Operations India has participated in, are the testimony to India‘s commitment to the UN Charter and its objectives. Known for their equanimity and forbearance, Indian troops have proved popular everywhere. The first deployment came early enough, when India sent troops to Korea as a part of the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission in 1953-54. This was a delicate task, involving the repatriation of Prisoners of War. This was followed by a stint at Gaza to keep Israeli and Egyptian forces apart.
• The largest (and longest serving) contingent was sent to Congo in 1961. A complete Independent Brigade Group helped bring about peace and its enforcement thereafter, which involved light to heavy engagements with mercenaries. One most cherished compliment came from an adversary. The mercenaries themselves conceded, in later writings, that the Indian contingent’s activity curbed their style. Capt. GS Salaria was awarded posthumously, the country’s highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra, for his brave action at Katanga.
• After Korea (1950-52) and Congo (1960-63), India again sent a Brigade Group to Somalia and displayed its resolve to support international community in peace and security issues. India has deployed Battalion Groups, engineers, medical teams in Cambodia, Angola, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Lebanon and Ethiopia. Observers and staff personnel have made their contributions to the international peace efforts in Central America, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Kuwait, Liberia, Lebanon, Ethiopia–Eritrea, Mozambique, Burundi, Ivory Coast and Congo.
• India has also provided able leaders for various missions, to name a few, General Thimayya in Korea & Cyprus, Lt Gen. Dewan Prem Chand in Cyprus & Namibia, Lt. Gen. Satish Nambiar in Yugoslavia, Maj Gen PS Gyani in Yemen, Sinai & Cyprus, Maj Gen V Jaitley in Sierra Leone and Maj Gen LM Tiwari in Lebanon apart from many a Contingent Commander. Currently, Maj Gen Rajender Singh, SM, VSM has the honour of commanding the Peacekeeping Force in Ethiopia-Eritrea.
• Present contribution of the Indian Army is 2357, inclusive of all ranks. In addition to Military Observers and Staff Officers, the Indian Army is participating with troops in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) and Ethiopia-Eritrea (UNMEE). The Indian Army is also in the process of deploying one Infantry Brigade Group in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
