  • Bharat Ratna Bhimrao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) is a premier level institute of Telecom Training in Asia. This training institute was previously known as “Telecom Training Centre” and its name was changed to “Bharat Ratna Bhimrao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT)” on 30-05-1992 in the honour of Bharat Ratna Bhimrao Ambedkar. This training centre had its origin at Calcutta where it initially started functioning in the 1920. During the Second World War, it was shifted to Jabalpur, where it commenced activities from April 22, 1942.
  • The training centre has achieved many milestones of progress in a period of 75 years. All the senior officers of BSNL / Department of Telecommunication have had their initial training in this institute. It is an apex training Institute of BSNL and is an ISO 9001:2008 accredited Institute.
  • The Training Centre has a campus of 35 acres with administrative building of 17,280 square meters in area. It has also got 236 staff quarters and four hostels with a capacity to accommodate about 400 trainees. Institute imparts training on various technologies to different organisations. There are high tech class rooms for lecture sessions fully equipped with all latest media support facilities. BRBRAITT has state of the art laboratories equipped with latest equipment worth crores of rupees to provide hands on experience to participants. Some of the main laboratories are Computers and Data communication Labs, Mobile Communication Labs, New Technology Switching Labs, Optical Fibre Cables, Measuring Instruments and Systems, Satellite.
  • BRBRAITT library has a huge collection of books (both for technical and general reading), periodicals & magazines and departmental publications. A separate reading room is being maintained for technical journals where magazines are displayed. An Audio/Video Section for trainees and staff is also maintained. They can see and listen to management & technical video/audio cassettes in this section of library.
  • Strength of BRBRAITT is its highly KNOWLEDGEABLE and EXPERIENCED Human Resource i.e. the Faculty Members. BRBRAITT is having a pool of Experts in various fields like Wireless Communication, Next Generation Networks, Data communication and Computer Networking, Programming Languages, Transmission Technologies, Administration and Management etc. Due to highly talented Man Power and Excellent Lab resources, BRBRAITT is able to offer courses not only for the Indian organisations but also for the Foreign Organisations.

About : 

  • Within six years of the invention of the Telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, the telephone bells started jingling in India. The Oriental Telephone and Electric Company Ltd., a London based firm, was granted licence by the then Governor-General to set up telephone exchanges at Bombay, Calcutta and Madras in November 1881. The telephone exchanges formally started functioning at these places on 28 January 1882.
  • It was a truly humble beginning for the telephones with barely two dozen subscribers at Madras and a somewhat higher number of 90 and 102 at Bombay and Calcutta respectively. The telephones had a rough weather in view of opposition from commercial establishments. As late as in 1900 there appeared an advertisement in a leading newspaper of Madras Take a telephone on concession. We will be happy to demonstrate the working of a telephone to anyone who calls on us. What a different story it had been with the Company having to literally peddle telephones!
  • In 1923, the Oriental Telephone & Electric Company set up three different companies – The Madras Telephone Company, The Bombay Telephone Company and The Bengal Telephone Corporation to cater to a larger clientele. By that time, as per the available reports, Madras had 1224 telephone connections, whereas Bombay and Calcutta had nearly 6,000 and 9,000 subscribers. At present, Madras has 19 Telephone Exchanges with 1.21 lakh telephones, Bombay has 43 Exchanges with 4.58 lakh telephones and Calcutta has 45 exchanges with 2.59 lakh telephones. Since Independence, India has made special efforts to indigenously manufacture telephone instruments, their accessories and other materials for telecommunication services. The Indian Telephone Industries was established at Bangalore as a public undertaking in 1948. Since then great strides have been taken in the expansion of telecommunication facilities in the country.
  • Special attention is being paid to the establishment of long distance communications. Several multi-channel coaxial and microwave systems have been commissioned, making available large blocks of high grade trunk circuits and telephone facilities all over the country. The major cities in the country have been connected through Subscriber Trunk Dialling system. Over 272 cities are now on the national STD network. International subscriber dialling service has also been introduced on a limited scale to start with. Full advantage is being taken of the communication satellite and of our own Satellite Earth Stations. At the time of Independence we had only about 1.1 lakh telephones in the country; the number has exceeded 29 lakhs by 1981. Starting with the metropolitan cities, telecommunication service have spread far and wide and they are now serving the people in all the nooks and corners of the country.

About : 

  • Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the Telephone, was born in EdinburghScotland on March 3, 1847. He was educated at Edinburgh and London Universities. Son and grandson of teachers of speech, Graham Bell was from his childhood fascinated by experiments in speech conducted by his grandfather and the lessons which his father gave. Because of ill health, he moved with his father to Canada in 1870. In 1872 Graham Bell opened a School in Boston for training teachers of the deaf and also gave instructions in the mechanics of speech. The following year he became Professor of Vocal Physiology in Boston University.
  • While working to devise a Multiple Telegraph, the thought of reproducing speech over distances constantly stirred his mind. On June 2, 1875, while working in Boston on Multiple Telegraph apparatus, Bell heard over an electric wire a sound corresponding to the twang of a steel spring at the other end. Recognising this as a manifestation of the undulatory current principle, he gave his assistant Thomas A. Watson, instructions for embodying it in a model of a telephone. This apparatus transmitted speech sounds the next day, June 3. Further experiments produced an instrument which on March 10, 1876, transmitted the first complete sentence: Mr. Watson, come here; I want you. This was the beginning of the telephone, the day of its invention.
  • The telephone was first shown publicly at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. There the telephone attracted attention amidst its formidable rivals such as the first electric light and the first printed telegraph. Bell went to England and further perfected the two-piece device into a single instrument containing the transmitter and the receiver. Incredibly, the London Times described it as an American humbug. All the same, the first telephone exchange in England was established in London in September, 1876.
  • Bell and Watson lived to inaugurate the first transcontinental telephone between Washington and San Francisco in 1915. Bell was the founder of the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf and of the Volta Bureau for increasing knowledge relating to deafness. He was for a time President of the National Geographic Society and was appointed a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution in 1898.
  • The great pioneer and inventor died on August 2, 1922 at his summer home near Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada. A fitting tribute was paid to him when all the telephone stations on the Bell Telephone network in U.S.A. and Canada remained silent for one minute on the day of the funeral.

  • The XIIth Plenary Assembly of the International Radio Consultative Committee (CCIR) meets in New Delhi on 21st January, 1970 to study technical and operating questions relating specifically to radio communication and to issue recommendations on them. The CCIR Plenary Assembly meets once in about every 3 years.
  • The CCIR which was established in 1927 is one of the permanent organs of the International Telecommunication Union (ITUwhich investigates and advises the ITU on technical and operation matters connected with radio, including new problems of space communication.
  • The CCIR provides agreed technical criteria upon which international radio discussions and agreements can be based. It also decides the technical characteristics to be recommended for equipment and systems used in international radio communication. This work is carried out through a number of study groups which cover diverse subjects like radio transmitters and receivers, sound and television broadcasting, radio propagation, international radio monitoring, satellite communication, maritime and aeromobile radio systems, etc.
  • The International Telecommunication Union with its headquarters at Geneva has the distinction of being the oldest International Organisation. It functions now as a specialised agency of the United Nations with the object of, maintaining and extending international co-operation for the improvement and rational use of telecommunications of all kinds. At present, 137 countries are members of the ITU. A member of the Union, ever since 1869, India has been actively associated with it over the last hundred years. Particularly after Independence, she has made significant contribution as an elective member of the Council and a nominee in a number of study groups. It is natural that India sets great store on the fascinating prospect of the countries of the world getting linked up in international telecommunication network through a world-wide communication system. The holding of this Plenary Assembly of the CCIR this year in India is an important event in the field of radio communication in this country.
