About : 

• Early signs of women’s aspirations for gender equality in Eretz Israel were apparent as far back as the First Aliyah, as some women chose to take part in public affairs or non-conventional professions. Although the pages of history have not granted them their proper place – they operated in a world of preconceptions and discrimination against women, their fight for self-realization and equal opportunity cleared a path and inspired others.
• The State of Israel embraced equality as a core principle early on, and just three years after the establishment of the State the Knesset passed the Women’s Equal Right Law of 1951, guaranteeing equal treatment of women and men.
• Women have yet to be fully included in society’s most influential bodies, but the efforts of these pioneering women set a quiet social revolution in motion, furthering gender equality and changing our society.
• Sara Levi–Tanai
  (1910-2005)Choreographer, songwriter and poet Sara Levi-Tanai was born in Jerusalem to parents who were originally from Yemen. After her mother passed away when she was seven years old, she grew up in an orphanage in Sated and in the Meir Shfeya youth village. Levi-Tanai’s many talents, including writing and dramatizing were apparent from the time she was a child and she was awarded a JDC scholarship to Levinsky Seminar in Tel Aviv. There she was trained as a preschool teacher and subsequently worked in preschools in little Tel Aviv. Due to a shortage of proper educational material, she began writing poems and recitations for children. She also published stories in a number of newspapers, Davar, Davar Yeladim and Davar Hapo’elet.

  In 1940 she moved to Kibbutz Ramat Hakovesh, where she taught preschool during the day and was a cultural creator at night. She wrote revues for the holidays, set biblical passages to music, wrote holiday songs and created folk dances, the most well-known of which is El Ginat Ha’egoz (To the Nut Grove). She also published two children’s books at that time. Her desire to be more active in the arts brought Levi-Tanai back to Tel Aviv, where she founded the lnbal Dance Theater in 1949. She brought young girls and boys from “Kerem Hatemanim“, and through them connected to her Yemenite roots, which inspired her unique artistic works.

  Sara Levi-Tanai developed a new language of movement. Her choreography was inspired by the bible, Israeli landscapes and Yemenite and Sephardic folklore. Through its many overseas tours, lnbal served as an ambassador of Israeli culture.

  Sara Levi-Tanai was awarded the Israel Prize in dance in 1973 for her contributions in the field of performing arts, as well as various other awards, including the title of “honored citizen of Tel Aviv“.

• Esther Raab
  1894-1981Esther Raab, Israel’s first native poet, was born in Petach Tikva, the first Hebrew moshava (agricultural colony). Her father, Judah Raab, was among the founders of Petach Tikva. Her poems began to be published in the early 1920’s and her first book, Kimshonim (Thistles) came out in 1930.

  The happiest years of her life were those spent growing up in the moshava, with its landscapes, animals and vegetation, and in time – her wealth, friends, home in Tel Aviv, which was a gathering place for writers and artists in the early 1930’s, and most of all – her poems, written over the course of more than 60 years, until just before her death at age 87.

  The low points in her life were marked by her disappointing loves and marriage, her years of silence, her childlessness and in her later years she lost her fortune and was haunted by nightmares.

  Author Yehoshua Kenaz wrote of her poetry: “Reading these poems is an Israeli experience, a Mediterranean experience, a first class artistic experience that poet Esther Raab was perhaps the first to express in such a bold and pure manner.“

• This stamp series presents four of the seven amphibian species currently inhabiting Israel. All four species are endangered locally or globally. Human activity has harmed the amphibian class more than other vertebrates. Due to their extreme sensitivity, amphibians serve as a bio-indicator of deterioration in the global environment. Amphibians have mainly been harmed in Israel as a result of their habitats being destroyed, but the key reason for their being endangered in the world is infectious diseases which are mostly spread as a result of trade in amphibians.
• Southern Banded Newt : 
  • Scientific Name : Ommatotriton vittatus.
  • The Southern Banded Newt lives along the edges of winter pools in the Mediterranean area of Israel. The adults are active from the beginning of winter. They are reddish-brown in color with a white abdomen and orange edges. This species eats small invertebrates. During the mating season the males grow a crest of skin and enter the water. Once the male locates a female, a courting ritual begins, at the end of which the male lays a sperm sac on the ground for the female to absorb. The eggs are laid on plant leaves, which the female rolls up in order to protect them. The tadpoles develop over the course of a number of months, and then leave the winter. This species is classified as being critically endangered in Israel.

• Hula Painted Frog : 
  • Scientific Name : Latonia nigriventer.
  • The Hula Painted Frog was first documented in the Hula Valley in the 1940’s. Later, after not being seen since the 1950’s, it was the first amphibian species in the world to be classified as being extinct. It was rediscovered in the Hula Nature Reserve in November 2011 and since then additional frogs of this species have been found in the reserve and the surrounding area, attesting to the existence of an active population. There is very little biological and ecological information about this species. It was recently discovered that the Hula Painted Frog belongs to a species that became extinct in Europe one million years ago. This finding means that this species is a living fossil. It is classified as being critically endangered in the world.

• Eastern Spade–foot Toad : 
  • Scientific Name : Pelobates syriacus.
  • The Eastern Spadefoot Toad lives along the edges of winter pools in the Mediterranean area of Israel. There are approximately 40 known populations in Israel. The populations in the Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee are genetically different than those in the Lower Galilee and the Coastal Plain. The adults are nocturnal and active from the beginning of the rainy season, but only when it rains. During the day these toads burrow deep into the soil, using the bony spade-like tubercles located on their hind legs. This species eats invertebrates, mostly snails, Mating takes place in the water and the notably large tadpoles (up to 20 cms) develop over the course of 3-5 months. Once the pools begin to dry up the tadpoles roll out of the water. The number of Eastern Spadefoot Toad populations found in Israel is decreasing, and the species is classified as being critically endangered.

• Near Eastern Fire Salamander : 
  • Scientific Name : Salamandra infraimmaculata.
  • The Near Eastern Fire Salamander lives along the edges of winter pools, streams and springs on Mt. Hermon, in the Galilee and in the Carmel mountains. Adults (up to 30 cms) are mainly active in the winter. Their black and orange coloring serves as a warning of the toxin that is secreted on their skin. Mating takes place on land. The male locates a female and lays a sperm sac, which the female absorbs. The female spawns 15-100 tadpoles in the water, which then develop over the course of a number of months until they roll out of the water. This species is classified as being endangered in Israel.

• Holocaust survivors rose from the ashes of the crematoriums and immigrated illegally to Eretz Israel (Eretz Yisrael, The Land of Israel) during the British Mandate period. Under terrible conditions, on crowded decks of dilapidated immigrant ships, they made their way to the Promised Land, their hearts filled with hopes and dreams.
• The city of Haifa was the first thing that most Holocaust survivors saw as they approached the coastline. The bare concrete docks of the Port of Haifa were, to them, the Holy Land for which they yearned. They were part of an extremely dramatic and historic step taken by the Jewish people – the establishment of the State of Israel.
• Haifa Port was the entry point into Eretz Israel. Haifa was the Jewish people’s home port, both for the illegal immigrants (máaplim) who arrived prior to the establishments of the State and for the waves of immigrants who came after the State of Israel was established.
• Gate number five, which served for years as the mythological main entrance into the Port of Haifa, was later named Palmer Gate. The road leading out from the gate is also called Palmer Gate; named for Sir Frederick Palmer, a British engineer who planned and built the Port of Haifa from 1920 to its official opening in 1933.
• Palmer Gate Street is crossed by Port St. (Rehov HaNamal), which housed the administrative and commercial center of the port, and today is at the heart of the Port Campus – the academic center of Haifa’s downtown area.
• The Port Campus is a challenging project, which will turn an entire section of Haifa’s downtown into a complex of college campuses, dormitories and modern residential buildings, as well as supporting businesses that are typical of this type of complex.
• The Port Campus is very significant for the city of Haifa. The project reshapes the character and appearance of the city’s downtown, rejuvenates it and restores its past glory, and constitutes a critical phase in Haifa’s development.

Picture : The stamp features two types of fruit that are characteristic of their countries – a pomegranate from Israel and a mangosteen fruit from Thailand.

In addition to their tastiness, each of these fruits has symbolic significance in the traditions of its people and its country.

In Jewish tradition, the pomegranate symbolizes beauty, fertility and abundance. It is also one of the seven species mentioned in the Bible as being special agricultural products of Eretz Israel.

The mangosteen fruit, a very popular tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, is known as the “Queen of Thai Fruit” probably because of its beautiful appearance and pleasant taste.

Each of these fruits is known to possess its own medicinal properties and they are also combined in food supplements, health drinks and beauty creams.

• The orbiting of first artificial earth satellite in 1957 was given due cognizance by the United Nations which noted the potential significance of this giant step toward exploration of space. Consequently the General Assembly of the United Nations set up an ad-hoc Committee to deal with the new ‘frontier of knowledge’ and immense potential opened up by Man’s ability to enter the outer space. The ad-hoc Committee was later on replaced by a regular committee of the General Assembly under the title of “Committee on the peaceful uses of Outer Space”. The membership of this committee was expanded from time to time to accommodate the increasing interest and also the larger number of member states joining the United Nations (the current membership of the Committee is 53). The Committee provides a ‘focal point’ for international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of Outer Space in accordance with General Assembly resolutions.
• After about ten years of space exploration the United Nations, upon the recommendations of the Outer Space Committee, held the first world conference on the exploration and peaceful uses of outer space in Vienna in 1968. Although this conference did serve a useful purpose in high-lighting the potential of Man’s access to space and in disseminating the scientific results and applications derived in the first decade of space exploration, is failed to produced substantial follow-up action. It, however, succeeded in the creation of a modest programme of space applications and appointment of an Expert for this programme within the Outer Space Affairs Division of the UN Secretariat.
• With the Passage of another ten years from the First World Conference, and some twenty years from the orbiting of first artificial earth satellite, the Outer Space Committee recommended to the Thirty-third General Assembly to convene the Second world conference in order to facilitate a global examination of the issues and opportunities offered by the advances made in space research and space-technology applications. The General Assembly agreed to this recommendation.
• The Second United Nations Conference on the exploration and peaceful uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE 82) will take place in Vienna, Austria from 9 to 20 August, 1982. Plans for the conference originated in the meetings of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, which is one of the permanent Committees of the United Nations General Assembly.
• The Conference has been convened to discuss and assess the progress which has been made in the peaceful uses of space technology since the convening of the first United Nations Conference on Space in 1968. It will provide a forum for assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of the existing institutional and co-operative arrangements for realising the benefits of space technology for the good of man everywhere.
• Participants of the conference include all member states of the United Nations, representatives of United Nations Organisations, specialised agencies and relevant inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations.
• The second conference has the following three main areas of interest, as reflected in its agenda –
  • a) State of space science and technology,
  • b) Applications of space science and technology,
  • c) International Co-operation and the role of the United Nations.
• The outcome of UNISPACE 82 will undoubtedly bear upon the future role and work of the United Nations in the space exploration and peaceful uses of outer space. It will also hopefully contribute in particular towards ensuring adequate utilisation of space technology for socio-economic advancement of the developing countries.
• In Pakistan also, a modest programme was initiated making its mark with the first launching of a scientific rocket on 7^th June, 1962, from the Sonmiani Rocket Range. Recently, (May 1981) a fully autonomous Commission has been established in Pakistan for the promotion of peaceful uses and applications of space.
