About :

  • Scouting was started by Lord Baden Powell as a result of his experimental camp at Brown sea Islands in 1907. Scouting aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, so that constructive role can be played by them in the society. Scouting movement are generally divided into Sections by age or school grade. Originally, Scouting was developed for youth between the ages of 11 & 17. Boys of this age group were found actively involving themselves in the activities outlined by the Founder in ‘Scouting For Boys’. They were found engaging themselves in these activities in public parks, open spaces and wherever they found a suitable place. This attracted children below 11 years of age also to Scouting. But these activities outlined in the Scout programme were not meant for the children of age group below 10 years.
  • This posed a serious problem for the Founder. It is believed that the minds of the younger kids immersed in the world of ‘make believe’. Therefore to cater to the needs of creative and imaginative minds it was important to think of involving them in Scouting with imaginative background.
  • The Founder’s great friend Rudyard Kipling provided the imaginative background in the story of “Mowgli”, which he had written based on the life of a Man-cub with a pack of wolves in the jungle. The story had its origin in the Seoni Hill of Madhya Pradesh, where the Pack of Akela, the Wolf leader, lived and a man child was taken away by them. A man child having been taken away by wolves in the jungle was no unreality. So, the Founder adopted this story to provide the imaginative background for the life of the Pack and built a programme of activities suitable to the children of age group 8 to 11 years. He called it the Wolf-Cub programme. This imaginative background was loved by the children and an unwritten code for the boy’s life in the jungle was established. It received universal approval and the Cub Scheme came into being. The Founder published his book ‘World Cub’s Handbook’ in 1916. This provided a programme for adults who were interested in working with children of age group 8 to 11 years. Even though on experimental basis, Cub activities had started in 1914, publication of this book gave it the proper beginning in 1916. The year 2016 was celebrated as centenary year of Cub Scouts in India and abroad.
  • It was originally a programme of games and activities for children of age group 8 to 11 years. The emphasis is to have fun and learn at the same time. A Cub Scout gets satisfaction from meeting challenges, and overcoming them along with learning new things, discovering and mastering new skills. In the process the child gains self-confidence and learn to develop strong bond with others. It is basically a programme based on imagination and so adults with imaginative back ground make better cubmasters.
  • The family spirit is the spirit of Cubbing. The Cubmaster occupies the place of parents in the Pack of family, and the Sixers occupy the place of elder brothers. It must have a family atmosphere and background to be successful. Its purpose is to make the boy experience the life which he will have to live as he grows old.
  • Cubbing also involves games, stories, play acting, handicrafts and also work through the Star Tests and Badges. The activities are undertaken in the jungle background. With the background story of “Mowgli”, the child easily understands what is expected of him in the pack. Cultivating love and appreciation of the outdoors is identified as one of the key elements.
  • Cub Scouts who join the Pack are arranged to assign to dens with 6-8 numbers, usually based on age. The pack is led by a Cub master. Cubbing lays stress on the individual development of the boy.
  • Cubbing is a preparation for Scouting where the scout involve himself in activities which will prepare him for life and train him to be a better human being, and later on, a better citizen. The mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.

About :

  • Shri Danmal Mathur is remembered as a well known and highly respected luminary of Rajasthan. Multifaceted and diligent, he was born on 14th March 1904 in Ajmer and made a mark for himself as an educationist. His father, Munshi Kanmal Mathur, had been Housemaster of Kotah House in Mayo College earlier, and was known for being a man of principle and a disciplinarian. A young Danmal imbibed his father’s qualities.
  • With a Bachelor’s degree from Government College, Ajmer, he went on to work as Demonstrator in Physics and later taught in Sardar High School, Bharatpur, for three years. The Principal of Mayo College in 1932, Mr. V.A.S. Shaw, recognizing his potential, appointed him to teach Geography in Mayo College. He rose to become Head of the Geography Department. Later, he went on to become Housemaster, then Vice Principal and also acting Principal before retirement in 1969.
  • He was the founder Principal of Vidya Niketan School in Bhilwara and the Mayoor School in Ajmer. For his signal contribution to education the Rajasthan State Govt. conferred the State Teacher’s Award in 1970, and the Mewar Foundation awarded him the Maharana Mewar Award in 1981.
  • His appointment on the board of government of a number of educational institutes is testimony of the high esteem he was held in as an educationist. His special contribution besides academics to Mayo is the Museum established by him, now called ‘The Danmal Mathur Museum’. Overseas visitors to the museum have rated it as among the best school museums in the world. The Open Air Map of India is another unique contribution of his to Mayo College.
  • He was a pioneer of the Scouting Movement in Rajasthan having been initiated by Madan Mohan Malviya. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the ‘Silver Star’ and subsequently the ‘Silver Elephant’ the highest award in Scouting in India.
  • Shri Mathur excelled in games also and achieved the rare distinction of captaining all the three major games; cricket, football and hockey in the same year in Govt. College, Ajmer. He was awarded the ‘Colvin Gold Medal’ in recognition of his sporting achievements in Govt. College. He was a member of the Rajputana cricket team, which played against the M.C.C. when it toured India and Australia in the Thirties.
  • In 1952 as a Fulbright scholar in the U.S.A. he won accolades for his expository lectures on Indian culture and religion.
  • Shri Mathur was on various boards, committees and associations in Ajmer, contributing his mite towards its growth. He was at different times, a member of the Urban Improvement Trust, a Councillor in the Ajmer Municipal Council, Vice-President of the Indian Red Cross Society and on the Board of Savitri College.
  • “Maa’t Saab”, as he was affectionately called, endeared himself to his students and inspired confidence in them. Pursuit of excellence and commitment to the task in hand were the guiding principles of his life. Any history of Mayo College, Ajmer, the Scout Movement in India and education in Rajasthan would be incomplete without mention of Danmal Mathur.

About :

  • The Girl Guides Movement was founded in 1910 by Lord Baden Powell in response to the requests of girls who were interested in the Boy Scouts Movement established by him in 1908. It quickly flourished in England and was soon started in a number of other countries.
  • The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts was founded in 1928. The aims and activities are substantially the same in all countries in which the movement is organized. This world-wide organization is dedicated to training the girls in citizenship, good conduct and out-door activities. The girls promise to follow a code of behaviour, undertake community service works and try to develop their skills by earning Proficiency badges in a wide variety of activities.
  • The Girl Guides Movement was established in British India in 1911. In a short span of time the movement spread throughout the sub-continent and branches were established in almost all parts of India.
  • Soon after independence in 1947 the Girl Guides movement was re-established in Pakistan as Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, well understood the need for the training of youth, who would be the future leaders of the country.
  • In October 1947, Begum G. A. Khan, who had already been very active in the Girl Guides movement before independence, was entrusted by Quaid-i-Azam with responsibility of organizing the girl guides movement in Pakistan.
  • On 20th December, 1947, at a meeting called of representatives of the provinces in Governor-General’s House, Karachi, Miss Jinnah accepted the patronship of the Association. Begum G. A. Khan, was elected Chief Commissioner of Pakistan Girl Guides Association and branches were formed in all the provinces.
  • At the 12th World Conference of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts held in Copperstown, USA, in August, 1948, Begum G. A. Khan represented Pakistan, which was accepted as a member of the World Association.

  • Scouting originated in England in 1907, based upon Lord Bden-Powell‘s ideas contained in his book “Scouting for Boys” which proved to have great appeal for youngsters the world-over. While purpose, promise and law of Scouting are universal, its programme is adaptable in needs of the youth wherever they live.
  • Scouting is an educational movement for young people and contributes to their personal and social development. It is a voluntary, non-political and democratic movement which is open to all. Today there are more than 16 million Scouts in the world. About 200 million people have been Scouts during their lifetime, including many prominent personalities.
  • The success of the book produced a Movement that quickly adopted the name of “Boy Scouts” and necessitated the establishment of a headquarters to administer it. By 1909 the Movement had taken firm roots as evident from the fact that a Scout Rally in London attracted more than 11,000 Scouts. The book “Scouting for Boys” had been translated into five languages.
  • The first world jamboree took place in 1920 in London and proved that young people of different nations could meet to share common interests and ideals. Since then there had been 13 World Jamborees at various places.
  • Between the two World Wars Scouting Movement continued to flourish almost in all parts of the world. Today scouting is a growing Movement with members in nearly every country in the free world.
  • In Pakistan scouting was founded soon after the country came into existence in August, 1947. It has rendered invaluable services in evacuation of marooned people, collection and distribution of clothes and food during floods, providing First Aid in refugee camps and giving inoculations against small pox and cholera during epidemics in the country.
  • The purpose and principles of Scouting in Pakistan are as follows:–Motto: Almustaid (Be Prepared). Promise: To do my duty to God and my Country, to help other people at all times, to obey the Scout Law. Law (1) A Scout’s honour is to be trusted, (2) A Scout is loyal to his country, his Scouters, his parents, his employers and to those under him, (3) A Scout’s duty is to be useful and to help others, (4) A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout, no matter, in what country, class or creed the other may belong, (5) A Scout is courteous, (6) A Scout is kind to animals, (7) A Scout obeys his parents and Patrol Leaders without question, (8) A Scout smiles under all difficulties, (9) A Scout is thrifty, (10) A Scout is clean in thought, word and deed.
  • Issued by: The Director General, Pakistan Post Office, Karachi.
