Born on 1238 CE at Pajaka, Udupi taluk, Karnataka, India

Died on 1278 CE

About :

  • Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of the Dvaita (dualistic) school of Vedanta, was born around 1238 CE in the village of Pajaka near Udupi, in present-day Karnataka, India. He belonged to a Tulu Brahmin family and exhibited a deep spiritual inclination from an early age. Known for his extraordinary intellect, physical strength, and devotion, he began his formal education under his father, Madhyageha Bhatta, and local scholars.
  • By the age of 16, Madhvacharya chose to renounce worldly life and took monastic vows (Sannyasa) under Achyutapreksha, the head of a local Advaita monastery. However, over time, he developed philosophical ideas that challenged the core tenets of Advaita Vedanta.
  • Sri Madhvacharya’s principal contribution to Indian philosophy was the establishment of Dvaita Vedanta. The dualistic philosophy stood in direct contrast to the non-dualistic Advaita school founded by Adi Shankaracharya. According to Madhvacharya, the individual soul (jiva) and the Supreme Being (Vishnu or Narayana) are eternally separate. He strongly asserted the reality of the world, the distinction between God and the soul, and the importance of bhakti (devotion).
  • Sri Madhvacharya argued that liberation (moksha) is achieved not through knowledge alone but through unwavering devotion to Vishnu, adherence to Dharma (righteous duty), and divine grace. His vision placed God as supreme and unchanging, with individual souls in eternal servitude to the divine.
  • A prolific writer and teacher, Sri Madhvacharya composed numerous works that laid the foundation of Dvaita philosophy. Key among them are:
    • Brahma Sutra Bhashya – A commentary that systematically critiques earlier interpretations, particularly those of Shankaracharya.
    • Bhagavad Gita Tatparya – A detailed exposition of the Gita’s spiritual teachings.
    • Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya – An interpretive text revealing the deeper meanings of the Mahabharata.
    • Upanishad Bhashyas – Commentaries on select Upanishads, offering dualistic interpretations.
    • Dwadasha Stotra – A collection of twelve devotional hymns dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
  • These works, rich in logic and devotion, laid the groundwork for the Dvaita school’s development and spread, influencing future generations of thinkers and devotees.
  • One of Sri Madhvacharya’s most enduring legacies is the establishment of the Udupi Krishna Matha, a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in Udupi. According to legend, he recovered an idol of Krishna from a shipwreck and installed it in the temple, which became the spiritual and organizational center of the Dvaita tradition.
  • To manage religious and administrative duties, Sri Madhvacharya founded Ashta Mathas (eight monasteries) and appointed his closest disciples as heads. These Mathas continue to function today, playing a certain role in preserving and promoting Dvaita Vedanta and the worship of Krishna.
  • Sri Madhvacharya’s teachings left a deep mark on Indian philosophy and devotional practice. His emphasis on the personal relationship between the soul and God resonated deeply with later bhakti movements across India. Communities, especially among Tulu and Kannada-speaking Brahmins, embraced his dualistic teachings and devotional emphasis.
  • His rational, theistic philosophy offered a strong counter-narrative to Advaita Vedanta and influenced subsequent theological debates. Today, his works are studied by scholars and devotees alike, and the institutions he established remain vibrant centers of learning and spiritual practice.
  • Sri Madhvacharya is revered not only as a philosopher but also as a saint, mystic, and reformer. His life of devotion, scholarship, and service continues to inspire millions, securing his place as one of the most significant figures in the spiritual and philosophical traditions of India.

About :

  • The heritage of India is filled with stories of saints who sacrificed their lives for the benefit of people. These saints gave a new direction and hope to the people through their philosophy and action. One such saint from western India is Veer Meghmaya.
  • Saint Veer Meghmaya lived around 1000 years ago. At that time, the historical capital of Gujarat was Anhilpur Patan. There was the rule of king Siddhraj Jai Singh Solanki.
  • At that time, people were longing for water due to famine for many years. The then king, who was a devotee of lord Shiva, got the “Sahastralinga Sarovar” constructed. To pay tribute to the power of lord Shiva, 1008 Shiva temples were also built around the lake with the Shivling.
  • Despite the constriction of the lake, water remained a challenge for the people. On asking the pundits/astrologers, it was told that the water did not come due to the curse of the king. It was told that the remedy would be, if a man with thirty-two qualities, sacrifices himself in the lake. Such a man with thirty two signs was “Veer Meghmaya” who was born in a Dalit Vankar family, near Dholka, in Ranoda village.
  • Saint Veer Meghmaya voluntarily accepted the sacrifice for the welfare of the people. At that time untouchability was at its peak. He appealed to the king for social justice, for the depressed classes of the area, which was accepted. With this single act of sacrifice, the life of millions of untouchables got transformed. The sacrifices of Veer Meghmaya is always remembered as the great cause of establishing human rights and redemption of the depressed classes.
  • In modern times, Veer Meghmaya is seen as a liberator of depressed and vulnerable. The government of Gujarat is developing his birth place as millions gather here to pay homage to Veer Meghmaya. With the development of memorial, research centre, library, primary health centre and renovation of temple, the devotees will be greatly benefitted.

Name : Mool Shankar Tiwari

Born on 12 Feb, 1824 at Tankara, Maurvi district, Gujarat, India

Died on 30 Oct, 1883 at Ajmer, Rajasthan, India

About :

  • Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, was born on Falgun Krishna Dashami Vikrami Samvat 1981 (February 12, 1824) in Tankara village, Maurvi district of present Gujarat. His father’s name was Karsan Ji Tiwari and mother name was Amritbai. His birth name was Moolshankar. While fasting on Shivratri and witnessing rituals in the Shiva temple, the curious child Moolshankar attained enlightenment and left his home at the age of 19 years to attain the darshan of the devout God and set out on a journey of purity.
  • He went to Mathura and got the education of grammar, vedas and scriptures from Guru Virjanand Dandi and learned from his philosophy that the main reason for the dilemma in the present condition of the country is the prevalence of wrong meanings instead of the correct meanings of the Vedas.
  • During his journey, he saw the web of religious pomp, superstition and social evils spread in the society and understood why we are slaves of others in our own country. Seeing the country’s poverty, illiteracy, plight of women, destruction of language and culture, Dayanand Saraswati became extremely moved. He learned that when India had the knowledge of Vedas, India was the world leader. He pledged to re-establish the Vedas, Vedic religion and ancient culture in India by offering his entire life as Gurudakshina to Guru Virjanand.
  • He expressed his views on religious, social and political issues through his classic book ‘Satyarth Prakash’. For the first time, he created awareness in the context of cow protection, Hindi protection, usefulness of Sanskrit language, Swadeshi, self-language and self-respect.
  • He established Arya Samaj in Mumbai in the year 1875 to keep his goals continuously moving forward. In order to restore India to the position of world leader, on Vedas, he presented its actual commentary before the countrymen and talked about the right of everyone to read the Vedas and to act in life as per the Vedic principles. In his short but precious life, he fiercely attacked religious superstitions and social evils. Proclaiming the message of the Vedas as ‘Mata Prakarana Bhavati’, he became the biggest advocate of women’s education. He called for bringing a large section of the Hindu society, which had been isolated due to casteism, untouchability and discrimination, into the mainstream of society, raising their standard of living and working for education.
  • While propagating the cause of social upliftment, Swadeshi and patriotism, he became a thorn in the eyes of British. At the age of 59, he was poisoned and eventually he passed away in Ajmer on the eve of diwali on 30 Oct 1883.
  • The actions undertaken by Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati during his lifetime, played a key role in restoring India to the position of world leader. Today the evil practices of casteism, untouchability, child marriage, polygamy, Sati practice, animal sacrifice, male sacrifice, purdah system, Devdasi have come down substantially. The works like inter-caste marriage, Dalit empowerment, widow remarriage, education campaign for all, women empowerment, right to education for women, right to read Vedas for all, education through Gurukul education system are being done by the government by making laws.
  • His thoughts are eternal and relevant even today. Even after 200 years of his birth, the life of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati gives us new vision and consciousness, the light of truth given by him gives us new energy and life giving power to fulfill our resolve every day.
  • The Logo on 200th birth anniversary of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on the occasion of the beginning of its 200th year on February 12, 2023, is a symbol of human sacrifice, unbroken peace, happy world and a unified India. It also symbolises that Vedas forms the basis of life of human race.

Died on 8 Sep, 1955 at Kunthalgiri, Bombay State, India [now in Maharashtra]

About :

  • Jainism, one of the world’s oldest religions, promotes the principles of non-violence, purity, and peace. The life of a Jain monk exemplifies simplicity and devotion, and in this context, we honor Acharya Shantisagar Muni Maharaj—a true beacon of spirituality and selflessness.
  • In July 1872, amidst spiritual darkness, Satagouda (later known as Acharya Shantisagar) was born in Yelgula Village, Belgaum district. His father, Shri Bhim Gouda Patil, was a wealthy and devout landlord, while his mother, Satyavati, was known for her charity and saintly nature. This nurturing environment profoundly influenced Satagouda’s early life.
  • From a young age, Satagouda displayed a remarkable detachment from worldly pleasures. A natural saint, thinker, and philosopher, he embodied virtues essential for a righteous life. His commitment to truth, compassion, and austerity set him on the path to sainthood. Seeking deeper spiritual guidance, he approached Devendra Kirtiji Maharaj (Devappa Swami), a revered Jain saint known for his extraordinary spiritual achievements. Eager to embrace renunciation, Satagouda requested initiation into monkhood. Devappa Swami prepared him for the challenges of a life dedicated to spiritual asceticism, ultimately initiating him as “Kshullaka” and bestowing upon him the name “Shantisagar,” which means “ocean of peace.”
  • During the Pancha Kalyanaka Mahotsav, Shantisagar sought “Muni Diksha,” fully committing himself to monastic life. A remarkable incident during this period demonstrated his spiritual prowess: a venomous cobra coiled around him in a cave, yet he remained completely unscathed, showcasing his profound mastery over fear and attachment. Over his lifetime, Shantisagar traversed more than 35,000 miles, embodying the essence of Jain teachings. In 1924, he undertook an extraordinary fast lasting over three years to protect Jain culture and values, earning the title “Charitra Chakravarthi” in 1937.
  • In 1955, Shantisagar began preparing for his ultimate journey, seeking solitude at Kunthalgiri Hill, a site of deep spiritual significance. He chose to enter ‘Ingini’ Samadhi-Maran, a supreme form of death in which he sought no external assistance. On the 26th day of his fast, he delivered a profound message about the soul’s liberation from material attachments and the necessity of self-control, emphasizing the importance of transcending the cycle of birth and death.
  • Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj left his earthly form on September 18, 1955, in Kunthalgiri, calmly uttering “Om Asi Aausa” and “Om Siddhaya Namah.” His passing resonated across the nation, prompting heartfelt tributes, including one from Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, who recognized him as a prince among ascetics and a monumental loss to humanity.
  • Acharya Shantisagar’s life continues to inspire self-realization and spiritual awakening. His unwavering commitment to peace, non-violence, and the pursuit of truth serves as a guiding light for all. May his memory endure, inspiring future generations toward spiritual growth and harmony.

Born on 7 Nov, 1908 at Tarsali, Gujarat, India

Died on 2 Jan, 1988

About :

  • Ambalal Muljibhai Patel, widely revered as Dada Bhagwan, was an extraordinary spiritual teacher whose life and teachings have impacted countless individuals worldwide. Born on November 7, 1908, in Tarsali, Gujarat, India, Dada Bhagwan was endowed with a deep sense of moral integrity and a contemplative nature from a young age.
  • His early life was characterized by a profound commitment to understanding the nature of existence and divinity. Raised with strong moral values by his mother, Dada Bhagwan was taught the principles of non-violence and compassion. This foundational lesson guided him throughout his life, influencing his approach to spirituality and his interactions with others.
  • As a teenager, Dada Bhagwan’s spiritual quest began to take shape. At the age of thirteen, he demonstrated a remarkable insight into the nature of God. When asked by his math teacher to find the smallest indivisible number, Dada Bhagwan declared that he had discovered God—the one common, indivisible entity present in all living beings. This early revelation began his lifelong pursuit of understanding the divine essence within every individual and the world around him.
  • At sixteen, Dada Bhagwan entered into marriage with Hirabaa. Despite his youth, he approached this significant life event with a contemplative mindset, recognizing the impermanence of worldly attachments. He viewed marriage as a temporary arrangement, acknowledging that one of them might eventually become a widow or widower. This perspective allowed him to fulfill his duties as a husband with love and respect while maintaining a profound detachment from worldly desires.
  • Dada Bhagwan and Hirabaa faced personal tragedies when their two infant children passed away. He responded to these losses with remarkable equanimity, viewing their children as transient visitors rather than permanent attachments. Throughout his life, Dada Bhagwan demonstrated a remarkable lack of attachment to material possessions. He managed a successful construction business in partnership with others, using the profits to support charitable causes. His selfless approach to wealth and his commitment to helping those in need were central to his spiritual philosophy.
  • The pivotal moment in Dada Bhagwan’s life occurred in June 1958. While sitting at a bustling railway station in Surat, Gujarat, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening. In a single hour, he attained a state of enlightenment that revealed the true nature of the universe and the self. This transformative experience led him to a clear understanding of the distinction between the Knower (the true Self) and his relative self, which he referred to as Ambalal Muljibhai Patel.
  • Following this enlightenment, Dada Bhagwan dedicated his life to sharing his newfound understanding with others. He developed a spiritual science known as Akram Vignan, which offers a direct and step-less path to Self-realization and liberation (moksha). Through the practice of Akram Vignan, individuals can achieve a state of inner peace, happiness, and spiritual fulfillment.
  • One of the key aspects of Dada Bhagwan’s teachings was the ceremony known as “Gnan Vidhi.” This sacred ritual was designed to impart the awareness of the real Self (the pure Soul) to seekers. During this ceremony, Dada Bhagwan addressed profound existential questions such as “Who am I? Who runs this world? What is God? What is karma? What is liberation?” His answers provided a clear and accessible understanding of these complex spiritual concepts.
  • Dada Bhagwan’s teachings are renowned for their clarity and practicality. He distilled the essence of all scriptures into contemporary language that is easy to understand, experience, and apply in everyday life. His teachings cover a wide range of topics, including the science of karma, the nature of humanity, and the principles of non-conflict and adjustment. His approach provides practical solutions to common dilemmas and supports spiritual progress through right understanding and knowledge.
  • In addition to his teachings, Dada Bhagwan sought to promote religious unity through his concept of the religion of the Self. He envisioned a non-sectarian Trimandir, a temple that integrates elements of Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Jainism. The Trimandir serves as a place where individuals from different religious backgrounds can come together to seek the real Self and transcend sectarian divisions.
  • To date, eighteen Trimandirs have been established, and several more are in planning or construction. These temples serve as centers for spiritual practice and community gatherings, reflecting Dada Bhagwan’s vision of fostering unity and understanding among diverse spiritual traditions.
  • In 1968, a pivotal figure in Dada Bhagwan’s mission emerged: Pujya Niruben Amin (Niruma). At the age of twenty-four, Niruma, a final-year MBBS student, was deeply inspired by Dada Bhagwan’s teachings. Her yearning for spiritual realization led her to serve Dada Bhagwan and his wife Hirabaa selflessly. Over the next two decades, Niruma devoted herself to this service and played a crucial role in disseminating Akram Vignan worldwide.
  • Niruma’s dedication included recording Dada Bhagwan’s speeches, ensuring that his teachings would be accessible to future generations. Her commitment to preserving and spreading Dada Bhagwan’s teachings was instrumental in the global reach of Akram Vignan. Dada Bhagwan honored Niruma with spiritual powers (siddhis) to continue imparting Self-realization to others, furthering his mission even after his passing.
  • Supporting Niruma in her mission was Pujya Deepakbhai Desai, who attained Self-realization from Dada Bhagwan at the age of seventeen. Deepakbhai Desai dedicated himself to promoting Akram Vignan, balancing his spiritual mission with his mechanical engineering career until the late 1990s. His continued leadership and guidance have been vital in sustaining and expanding the teachings of Dada Bhagwan.
  • Following Niruma’s passing in March 2006, Pujya Deepakbhai Desai has taken on the role of leading and guiding the science of Akram Vignan. Under his leadership, the teachings of Dada Bhagwan continue to reach an ever-growing audience, with over 1.1 million followers in India and across the globe. The teachings have inspired a diverse range of followers in countries such as Australia, the UK, the USA, Brazil, Germany, Kenya, and the UAE.
  • The Dada Bhagwan Foundation, headquartered in Adalaj, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, oversees a township designed to support spiritual practice. The township includes a 15,000-seat convention center and various facilities for followers to deepen their practice and engage in community activities. Additionally, the foundation supports numerous charitable trusts that focus on medical aid, food distribution, and educational initiatives, reflecting Dada Bhagwan’s commitment to social and spiritual welfare.

Born on 26 Mar, 1836 at Chalakapura, Bidar district, Karnataka, India

Died on 21 Aug, 1989 at Hubballi, Karnataka, India

About :

  • Siddharoodha Swami, a luminary in the realm of spiritual humanism, graced our sacred land of India, often likened to the pinnacle of spiritual enlightenment. India, a tapestry of diverse cultures and beliefs, cherishes the principle of unity in diversity, where reverence for the teachings of various spiritual leaders unites people across strata. In this fertile soil of spiritual wisdom, Siddharoodha Swami’s presence was akin to a fragrant flower spreading its divine essence far and wide.
  • Born to Gurushantappa and Devamallamma in the village of Chalakapur, Siddharoodha Swami embarked on his spiritual journey from a tender age. His quest led him to the revered Amareshwar Guru Gajadand Shivayogi, where he imbibed the essence of Advaita philosophy. He served him in four fold ways – intimate, body, place and good-will. He gained Guru’s Grace for having informed Subbayya Shastri about the features of Brahman. Gajadanda Swami blessed him by saying that he was not ordinary and he had come as Lord Shiva to uplift the devotees. He also told him that he had incarnated to show the right path to the mumukshus (intense seekers). He ordered him to begin his lifework of preaching advaita as Shree Siddharoodha Bharati. In return, Shree Siddharooha gave his Ishta-linga to his Guru as Guru dakshine. One, who has transcended the three ordinary states (waking, dream and deep sleep) and crossed the six enemies – desire, anger, fear, greed, arrogance and jealousy does not need linga saying thus to his Guru and taking his permission, he began his sojourns.
  • Blessed by his Guru, Siddharoodha Swami devoted his life to the upliftment of seekers, traversing the length and breadth of the country to disseminate his message of universal love and harmony. People, who were afflicted with sorrows and heavily loaded with the miseries of the worldly existence, took his darshan. Lakhs of people became his followers. Siddharoodha’s divine-lamp enlightened in the hearts of his devotees. Wherever Shree Siddharoodha went, there he made wonderful miracles.
  • Sadguru Siddharoodha Swami was a Great Saint, Philosopher, socio-religious revolutionary and who preached Universal Religion – Social Humanistic Philosophy, Peace and Harmony in Mankind. Died on 527 BCE at Pavapuri, Magadha, Haryanka Empire [now in Nalanda district, Bihar, India]

About :

  • Bhagwan Mahaveer was the twenty-fourth and last Tirthankar of the Jain religion of this era.
  • Bhagwan Mahaveer, born as Vardhaman, was the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. He was born on the thirteenth day of the rising moon of Chaitra month, 599 B.C. in the rich environment of Vaishali (Vajji Sangha) at Kundgram in Bihar, India.
  • Due to his special qualities, he was addressed by five names – Vardhaman, Veer, Ativeer, Mahaveer and Sanmati. He has been deeply interested in renunciation since his childhood. He renounced his royal life and left his home at the young age of 30. He left behind his royal clothing under a “Ashoka tree”, at a place called ‘Khandvan’ and became a Digambara saint.
  • Bhagwan Mahaveer attained Kaivalya (enlightenment) at the age of 42, under a Sal tree, on the banks of the Rijupalika River near Jurmbhikgram after performing a rigorous penance for 12 years as a dedicated shraman. After attaining enlightenment, Bhagwan Mahaveer chose Vipulachala, near Rajagriha, for his first sermon. Here, he spoke in Prakrit, the people’s language, sparking a social revolution. Indrabhuti Gautam, foremost among his 11 Gandharas, became a tireless propagator, spreading his message far and wide.
  • Bhagwan Mahaveer didn’t represent a personality of prohibitions, rather he became a bright bundle of positive acceptances. He inspired the people to know the real truth and let it manifest freely in all dimensions of life. He said that man is known not by his/her birth but by the deeds. Describing the nature of an object as religion, Bhagwan Mahaveer emphasized on its adoption through forgiveness, contentment, simplicity and softness. True religion, he believed, was like a radiant lamp, which can dispel all darkness from its path.
  • 2550 Years ago, Bhagwan Mahaveer declared that religion is not such an existence which creates a rift among human beings. Rather, it is such a moral/philosophical system, which creates a bridge of compassion not only between humans, but also among the entire living worlds and brings them closer to each other. Thus, he championed non-violence over violence, truth over falsehood. Through Anekant and Syadvad, he advocated respecting diverse viewpoints, dismantling injustice and solidifying the path to justice.
  • He evolved the doctrine “Live and let live”. According to him, only the one, who wants to live, can create constructive conditions of coexistence for his/her neighbourhood, city-locality and country-world through a positive living. Mahaveer’s concept of Living was indicative of the fact that living is an art, and it lies in self-discipline and self-discovery. His concept of living contains new possibilities of co-existence.
  • Tirthankar Mahaveer expanded the inheritance of the Shramana tradition, which came from the Lord Rishabhdev. Mahaveer’s entire life was dedicated to the search for truth and equity; Samyaktva of knowledge and also of the character. He performed intense experiments of meditation to experience the essence of the purity of his soul. He was a man of experiment and practised the religion of truth. He explained the practice of separating Pudgal and Jiva; conscious and unconscious.
  • Championing equality, Bhagwan Mahaveer shattered societal hierarchies. He declared that all souls, regardless of position, are inherently equal. There are no superiors or inferiors, no masters or slaves and no distinction between men and women. Both genders deserve the same social and cultural standing. He took a revolutionary step by dismantling the shackles that confined women within traditional customs, paving the way for their liberation. While advocating for celibacy, he emphasized it as a principle that could empower women, not restrict them. Ultimately, his teachings aimed to dismantle discrimination and awaken a sense of true equality within society.
  • Bhagwan Mahaveer gave a new expansion to the philosophy of non-violence and said that it is necessary not to harm anyone through thought, word and deed and prohibited every type of violence. Non-violence was described as the supreme religion and the giver of happiness and peace. To attain this, he underlined the necessity of following celibacy along with truth, non-stealing and non-attachment. Apart from this, he emphasized on having a feeling of compassion towards every living being and attaining the ultimate feeling of happiness from one’s soul. Calling for victory over oneself, he asserted the principle of live and let live. He propounded the multi-dimensional existence of truth and introduced the principle of Anekant for non-violent resolution of conflicts and suggested the technique of its revelation to the public with Syadvad.
  • Bhagwan Mahaveer believed that freeing the soul from bondage required conquering anger and embracing knowledge that illuminates truth and calms the restless mind. His teachings, known as Sarvodaya Tirtha, transcended all boundaries – region, time, caste or social status. Ultimately, his concept of religion focused on achieving soul purity. He viewed all souls with compassion, recognizing their inherent equality. This principle formed the core of his message:treat others with the same kindness and respect you desire for yourself”.
  • 2549 years ago, at the age of 72, Bhagwan Mahaveer attained Nirvana on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi in Pawapuri (Bihar). This marked the culmination of his life’s journey, a transition from a revered teacher to a Siddha – a perfect, liberated soul. Jains celebrate this auspicious night as Diwali, lighting lamps to symbolize the illumination and liberation he achieved. Diwali, the last day of the Jain calendar, becomes a radiant testament to his enduring legacy.

Towards the end of 19th century, Saint Bhima Bhoi saved the downtrodden people from accepting Christianity. He gave a new dimension to the Hindu religion by creating the Satya Mahima Cult with substantive principles of Sanatan Dharma. It was based on the principles of non-attachment and renunciation. Under his able leadership, the cult spread like wildfire in the whole of Odisha and nearby states like Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and other parts of India.

  • Bhima Bhoi and Maa Annapurna are worshipped by their devotees as God and Goddess whose Paduka Temple is enshrined in the premises of Khaliapali Samadhi Pitha. He was a young yogi and his yoga was effective par excellence. Bhima Bhoi breathed his last in Khaliapali on Shiva Chaturdasi in 1895, where his Samadhi temple is located.

About :

  • Khartargachha’ is one of the most prominent and oldest living sect of Jain Shwetamber Sangh. Around 2,600 years ago, Lord Mahavir was the 24th Tirthankar of Jains. In the lineage of Lord Mahavir, Gautam Swami and Sudharma Swami succeeded him in due course. Lord Mahavir had prescribed strict rule based regime to be followed by Jain Sadhu-Sadhvis and their followers.
  • With influx of time, distortions creeped into lives of some Sadhus. They had started living in temples (Chaitya) and hence were also known as ‘Chaityavasi’. To lead an easy life, they had gradually discarded the strict regime of monk life prescribed by Lord Mahavir. There were however some true followers of Lord Mahavir, who scrupulously followed his path and regime.
  • Around Vikram Samvat 1078-79, Acharya Vardhman Suri, who was the 39th heir to the lineage of Lord Mahavir, and Sudharma Swami alongwith his disciples including Acharya Jineshwar Suri started moving from Delhi towards Gurjar Pradesh (now, Gujarat) and reached Patan in Vikram Samvat 1980. At that time, Patan was dominated by Chaityavasi Acharyas notably Suracharya and Sadhus and they had great influence over the King and its people. At the behest of Chaityavasi Sadhus, misinformation was spread about Acharya Vardhman Suri and his disciples and word reached the King. At the advice of his Mantri, the King ordered a debate (Shastrartha) between Suracharya and Jineshwar Suri started in the presence of King Durlabh Raj. Finally, after long debate with many Granths by both the contestants, King Durlabh Raj, impressed with arguments and testimonies presented and declared Acharya Jineshwar Suri, who succeeded as the 40th heir to lineage of Lord Mahavir. Thereafter, his Sadhus and followers were known as Khartargachhiya and group of his followers, Sadhus-Sadhvis etc. came to be known as ‘Khartargachha’. Thus, 1000 years ago, Khartargachha came into existence and is now entering its Millennium Year (Sahasrabdi Varsh – 1000th year) in Vikram Samvat 2080 (Year 2023-24 AD).
  • Since then, Khartargachha is continuously moving forward in its glorious journey. In the long and glorious history of Khartargachha spanning these 1000 years, many famous Acharyas, Sadhu-Sadhvis, scholars, litterateurs, painters, sculptors and philanthropists have greatly enriched our nation and its socio-cultural milieu by different means and methods. Acharya Jin Dutt Suri, Acharya Manidari Jin Chandra Suri, Acharya Shri Jin Kushal Suri, Akbar Pratibodhak Acharya Shri Jin Chandra Suri, Mahopadhyaya Samay Sundarji, Acharya Kshma Kalyan Sagar Suri etc. were famous Scholar-Acharyas, who authored many important granths and propounded original thinking on complex spiritual issues. This resulted greater and deeper understanding of concept and application of various principles. More than 400 years ago, Mahopadhyaya Samay Sundar was a scholar par excellence, who defined and described a single sentence of 8 words into 8,00,000 ways. In the lineage of these illustrious Khartargachha Acharyas and Sadhus, many of their disciples have propagated and spread the principles and teachings of Jain Dharma through nook and corner of the country. Four most famous Acharyas namely Acharya Abhay Dev Suri, Acharya Jin Dutt Suri, Acharya Manidari Jin Chandra Suri, were out of reverence known as ‘Dada Gurudev’ and temples dedicated to them are known as ‘Dadabari’. There are around 800-900 Dadabaris situated in every part of the country, where thousands of faithfuls and followers visit to pay obeisance to them. Khartargachha Acharyas visited many kings and rulers to show them the right path and influenced them and inspired them to declare prohibition of slaughter of animals on several occasions. Thus, lives of many precious animals were saved, which is a living testimonial of adherence to principles of Ahimsa.
  • There have been many eminent Khartargachha Scholars like Shri Agar Chand Nahata, Shri Bhanwar Lal Nahata, who have authored more than 100 books and more than 5,000 articles and painstakingly collected and deciphered many old, rare manuscripts. Another great scholar, Mahopadhyaya Shri Vinay Sagar ji made significant contribution to literature by authoring, editing and translating many important books. Khartargachha Shravaks and Sanghs have built many famous temples and Tirths, which are marvels of sculpture especially Temple sculpture. Around 250 years ago, Seth Motishah, a Khartargachha Shravak, concerned with various accidents and injuries to pilgrims decided to build a grand temple by joining two hillocks and filling and levelling the vast land between these hillocks at Palitana (Gujarat). Many Paintings and art works by Khartargachha followers are mesmerizing and are invaluable. Many philanthropists from this sect have built institutions like Granth bhandars, schools, colleges, hospitals, dharmshalas, old age homes, auditoriums etc. in many parts of the country. These institutions are helping needy and people of weaker sections without any distinction of caste, creed, religion, sex, state, language or province.
  • By dint of their hard work and principled life, Khartargachha followers have earned respect and admiration of every section of society. Ahimsa (Non-Violence) and Satya (Truthfulness) are undiluted core values, which every Khartargachhiya follower practices without any compromise or exception. Thus, its followers are always at forefront in making positive and significant contributions to society and country at large.
  • Khartargachha sect is fully determined to carry forward this glorious legacy to greater heights and glory by re-inventing itself and re-dedicating to serve humanity with great zeal in this rare and historical period of Millennium Year (Sahasrabdi year – 1000th year). We are proud of our past, are safe and secure in present and confident of future. We will march forward with vision, vigour and determination to contribute to the nation building and social welfare in a true and righteous manner.
