About :

  • The Hindustan Times has been a significant force in Indian journalism and public life for 100 years, evolving from its origins in the freedom struggle to become a leading voice in contemporary media. Launched on September 15, 1924, the newspaper’s inception was closely tied to India’s anti-colonial and social reform movements. Amidst the political turbulence of early 20th-century India, the Gurudwara Reform Movement aimed to remove corrupt priests loyal to the British, leading to peaceful protests by the Akalis which were violently suppressed. In response, a group of Akalis including Sunder Singh Lyallpuri, Tej Singh Samundri and Sardar Mangal Singh saw the need for a newspaper to amplify their message.
  • Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated The Hindustan Times and selected K.M. Panikkar as its editor. Gandhi’s advice to Panikkar emphasized the importance of honesty and transparency, a principle that remains a cornerstone of the newspaper’s ethos. The early years were challenging, with the paper struggling financially. Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya provided crucial support by borrowing Rs 40,000 from Punjab National Bank, chaired by Lala Lajpat Rai to cover debts. By 1927, the newspaper was restructured into a limited liability company with Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya on the board and Ghanshyam Das Birla, a key supporter of Gandhi, as a major shareholder.
  • By 1930, The Hindustan Times had made significant strides with a circulation of nearly 30,000 copies reaching readers across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. However, the colonial government imposed strict press laws, often penalizing newspapers for their content. During the Quit India movement in August 1942, The Hindustan Times voluntarily ceased operations for four months in protest against these restrictions.
  • The newspaper was not only a nationalist platform but also a voice for an emerging nation. It launched its Hindi sister publication, Hindustan, in 1936, broadening its impact. The newspaper featured writings by eminent figures such as Motilal Nehru, Maulana Mohammed Ali and Jawaharlal Nehru in its first issue. Over time, it published influential works, including Gandhi’s autobiography, My Experiments With Truth and contributions from international figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Hindustan Times was also known for its distinguished journalists including cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai, reporter Durga Das and editor Pothan Joseph. Devdas Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s third son served as managing editor from 1937 to 1957, contributing significantly to the newspaper’s development.
  • Following India’s independence in 1947, The Hindustan Times faced the task of navigating a new and complex political landscape. The violence of Partition and the assassination of Gandhi were profound challenges. Despite these difficulties, the newspaper remained committed to supporting and shaping the nation. It played a role in nation-building, raising funds for soldiers, reporting on the lives of ordinary Indians and pioneering pictorial storytelling through photojournalism. Its editorials were candid and critical, reflecting the concerns of a young Republic.
  • Under the guidance of the Birla family, the newspaper continued to adapt and grow. Krishna Kumar Birla who succeeded his father G.D. Birla in 1957, expanded the newspaper’s reach and launched new publications such as the tabloid “Morning Echo”, the children’s magazine “Nandan” and the literary magazine “Kadambini” in Hindi. Despite these expansions, the focus on nationalism remained central to The Hindustan Times.
  • In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, The Hindustan Times embraced modernity with Shobhana Bhartia, Krishna Kumar Birla’s daughter, leading the newspaper into the digital age. Under her leadership, the newspaper launched new city editions, invested in its online presence and introduced lifestyle products like “HT Brunch” and “HT City”. The Hindustan Times also initiated the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS) in 2003, an annual event that gathers global leaders and thinkers to discuss important issues.

About :

  • Newspapers are an essential part of modern civilization. They inform us about the latest developments that are taking place in the world. They also guide us and mould public opinion on issues of national and international importance. Newspapers provide space for public grievances and educate citizens on good citizenship and ethics.
  • Mumbai Samachar is Asia’s oldest existing newspaper. First published on 1st July, 1822, the headquarter of this Gujarati newspaper was visited by Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for discussion on important issues. On 1st July, 2021, the newspaper has entered in the 200th year of publication.
  • Mumbai Samachar started as a small bunch of pamphlets on 1st July, 1822, by Parsi priest-cum-scholar, Fardunjee Murazban, considered as the pioneer of Gujarati journalism, as he started the first Indian printing press in 1812. The first version of the newspaper had consisted of 14-pages on three small quarto sheets and a half-sheet supplement in a 10 by 8 inch format.
  • Mumbai Samachar in its initial phase catered to the thriving business community of the city and provided business-related news, death announcements, and especially shipping time-tables as all trade was conducted through the Bombay port. A week till 1832, a bi-weekly till 1855, and then on to a full-fledged daily, the newspaper became a favourite of the Gujarati community comprising Paris, Hindus, Jain, Dawoodi Bohras, Khojas and Memons, etc.
  • Over the years, while faithfully catering to the business community, “Mumbai Samachar” witnessed history as the Seven Isles known as Bombay transformed into Mumbai, the country’s financial-glamour power capital. The Camas, who acquired it in 1933, continued the paper’s strongly “nationalistic” editorial policies which endeared itself to the stalwarts of the freedom movement.
  • With a daily circulation of barely 15,000 copies in the 1930s, now it sells at least 10 times more. After Asia’s first bourse, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) started working in 1875, the “Mumbai Samachar” provided well-researched daily reports on the ups-and-downs till the 1990s Mumbai Samachar was eagerly lapped up by the investor community. Ms. Pinki Dalal became the first ever women editor for Gujarati Daily.
  • Currently more than 200 staff members and offices across four other centres apart from Mumbai, bring out a single daily edition of the paper, making it the oldest running newspaper in India. It has survived two World Wars, the fight against colonialism, global financial slumps and now the pandemic covid-19.
  • Mumbai Samachar has successfully overcome the brunt of digital media due to its credibility and adherence to its original values. Even today, authenticity of the news is the first priority of the newspaper. It continuously provides vast informative and educational material through its daily supplements. The newspaper has taken a number of initiatives to promote Gujarati language, literature and tradition. The daily has also mentored many young journalists who are doing very well in the field of Gujarati and regional language journalism.

About :

  • The Samaja’, a widely circulated and read Odia daily, was founded in 1919 by Gopabandhu Das (1877-1928); a visionary and freedom fighter. He was a symbol of Odia identity popularly known as Utkalmani and devoted his entire life to the cause of Odisha in particular and India in general. The environment of his time was marked by the awakening of nationalist forces in Odisha, the introduction of western education and the rise of Indian Renaissance.
  • As an educationist, Gopabandhu realised that without education, people would not be conscious of their freedom and duty towards the nation. He was greatly influenced by the work of the Deccan Education Society under the leadership of Gopal Krishna Gokhale. As a result, a school was established at Satyabadi in the district of Puri. Gopabandhu became the Secretary of that school.
  • The Odia weekly which he started and edited viz. ‘The Samaja’ was the means to propagate his ideas and create awareness among the masses. He emphasised on four major problems, viz. amalgamation of all the Odia speaking tracts; permanent measures for the prevention of floods and famines in Odisha; the restoration of Odia’s right to manufacture salt free from excise duty; and spread of education on Satyabadi model. He brought Gandhiji to Odisha in 1921 to further the cause of Non-Cooperation Movement. He was arrested by the police in 1921 and imprisoned. He was released from Hazaribagh jail on 26 June, 1924. Subhash Chandra Bose rightly called him the father of the national movement in Odisha.
  • Today, the Odia daily ‘The Samaja’ continues to be a powerful medium to carry unbiased and independent news to every nook and corner of the state. It was initially published from Cuttack and now it has multiple editions being published from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Balasore and Berhampur in Odisha apart from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata in West Bengal.
  • Over the years, it has slowly transformed itself into an institution. In the annals of the post-Independence era, the role of ‘The Samaja’ has been instrumental in contributing to the nation-building process. Now, it has a readership of around Sixteen Lakh having a daily circulation of nearing Three Lakh Fifty Thousand.
  • The Samaja’, is owned and managed by ‘Servants of the People Society’ (Lok Sevak Mandal), New Delhi, a trust founded by Punjab Kesari, Lala Lajpat Rai. The association of many a luminary in the course of time has enriched ‘The Samaja’. The profound and enormous contribution of Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai, Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, Sri Balwant Rai Mehta, the former Prime Minister of India Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Vice-President of India Shri Krishna Kant, former Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Biswanath Dash, Padma Bhushan Dr. Radhanath Rath has enabled the newspaper to leave an indelible imprint on the psyche of every Odia as the ‘Newspaper of the populace’.
  • Apart from disseminating news, ‘The Samaja’ is committed to several social causes. The ‘Samaj Relief Committee’ has been the social face of ‘The Samaja’ over the years. The objective has always been the welfare of the people of Odisha be it their health, education or relief during natural calamities. ‘The Samaja’ reaches every doorstep through its relief work as a tribute to his founder. ‘The Samaja’ has established a 100-bed hospital known as Gopabandhu Institute of Medical Science and Research at Madhabpur under Athgarh subdivision of Cuttack district to provide health services to the poor and distressed. Scholarship is being provided to encourage talented students to carry out their academic ambitions.

Along this long journey, there have been times when this paper has experienced and mirrored pure joy – that of Cricket World Cup victories of India in 1983 and 2011achievements in the field of science, Amartya Sen and Mother Teresas Nobel wins, etc. Be it the news of India or of the important world events the paper has enriched the lives of the people of India by its candid reporting.
  • Today, the Times of India is a modern multi-media organization that celebrates economic liberalization, free market and a robust integration with the world order. Other than becoming a global institution, it has also embraced the newest in technology and has a bold footprint in virtually every comer of the country. Its internet edition is India’s most popular news website today, and is available on mobile phones as well. The newspaper, under the flagship of Indias largest media company, Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd, has made an immense contribution to the life and times of the Indian subcontinent over these 175 years.
  • Department of Posts had celebrated the achievements of the paper by issuing a stamp on completion of 150 years of its existence in the year 1988. The Times of India has now completed 175 years by amalgamating the newspaper with cutting-edge digital technology.

About :

  • Malayala Manorama, one of the oldest and largest circulated daily in the country, was founded by Kandathil Varghese Mappillai at Kottayam, which was then a small town in the princely state of Travancore, on March 14, 1888. The first issue of the Malayala Manorama appeared on March 22, 1890. It was a four-page weekly newspaper, published every Saturday. Since then there has been no looking back. The weekly newspaper became a daily in 1928. Today, Manorama is published from 18 centres, two of them being abroad in Dubai and Bahrain.
  • The Malayala Manorama was in the forefront of the freedom struggle in the princely state of Travancore. The paper was actively involved in the civil rights agitation, the formation of the Travancore State Congress and the historic campaign for responsible government. Its fearless and objective writings invited the wrath of the authorities which banned Manorama for its candid reporting on police firings and atrocities against people demanding democratic rights at Neyyattinkara on September 1, 1938. On September 10,1938, armed police charged into the Manorama office at Kottayam and sealed its doors. It was finally back on November 29,1947 after India’s independence.
  • Manorama has many firsts in India to its credit. It was the first in India to use flat-bed facsimile system and automated mailroom system. Manorama was also the first paper in the country to start the ‘Newspaper in Education’ (NIE) programme. Apart from the daily newspaper, Manorama has ventured into around four dozen publications in five languages and has a strong presence in the electronic media. Manorama Weekly, Bhashaposhini, Vanitha, The Week, Balarama are some of its best-selling publications in India. Manorama News channel, Manorama Music, Radio Mango and Manorama Online occupy popular spots in the electronic media.
  • Malayala Manorama has played a proactive role in fulfilling its social responsibilities and being an instrument of societal change. It has started projects for conservation of environment like Pala Thulli (water conservation), Bhoomikkoru Kuda (distribution of saplings for a greener world), Sukrutha Keralam (Clean Kerala), SAVE (Serve as A Volunteer for Energy). It has also launched a campaign to create awareness on road safety.

Died on Jun 29, 1992

About :

  • Durga Prasad Chaudhary fondly known as “Kaptan Sahib” was a nationalist, a freedom fighter and a pioneer journalist. He was born on 18th December, 1906 in Neem-Ka-Thana, Rajasthan. His father Muralidhar was also a social reformer.
  • As a young teenager, Durga Prasad Chaudhary was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi‘s appeal to the youth of the country to join the fight against the tyranny of foreign rule and became his dedicated disciple.
  • When a camp of Congress Seva Dal was held at Hatundi, Ajmer, a few days before the Salt Satyagraha, Durga Prasad Chaudhary was appointed as Captain of this Seva Dal, a position which he occupied till 1945. He took an active part in Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements. He was imprisoned several times between 1930 and 1947. After independence, he became a Member of Ajmer Municipal Council from 1948 to 1953.
  • Durga Prasad Chaudhary started “Dainik Navajyoti“, a weekly newspaper, on 2nd October, 1936 on the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi to write about the British Raj in India. During the Quit India movement in 1942, the paper was suspended due to the repressive policy of the British Government. It resumed publication in 1945 and became a daily newspaper in 1948. The paper has completed 75 years of its establishment in 2011. The guiding philosophy of this paper under the stewardship of Durga Prasad Chaudhary was to propagate the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, inculcate patriotism among the masses and to oppose violence and communal hatred. Durga Prasad Chaudhary was always impartial, truthful and fair in his writings.
  • Durga Prasad Chaudhary also did commendable work for the upliftment of farmers. As a patron of Kisan Sangh, Ajmer, established in 1982, he organized Kisan Sabhas in 700 villages of Ajmer district to create awareness about social evils. He was of the firm belief that a free India would be meaningless if hunger, poverty, untouchability and other social evils continued in this country. All through his lifetime, he worked relentlessly towards his vision and ideals of a progressive and modern India. He breathed his last on 29th June 1992.

Name : Puran Chandra Gupta

Born on Jan 2, 1912 at Kalpi, Uttar Pradesh, India

Died on Sep 16, 1986 at India

About :

  • Puran Chandra Gupta (1912-1986), founder editor of the Dainik Jagran media group, was one of the pioneers of Hindi journalism. He was born at Kalpi in Uttar Pradesh and was educated at Kalpi-Kanpur and Varanasi.
  • His fierce Independence and power of expression came to be noticed during the days of education itself. Before long he realized that journalism was his calling, and in 1940, started publishing a weekly newspaper called Swatantra from Kanpur. His nationalist zeal came up for the adverse notice of the British rulers, and he was forced to shift its publication to Jhansi. Mahatma Gandhi’s Civil Disobedience Movement inspired Puran Chand Gupta to think about a daily newspaper, and he started publishing Jagran from Jhansi in 1942. Its successor, the Dainik Jagran, was launched immediately after Independence, in September 1947, from Kanpur.
  • Puran Chandra Gupta was aware of the progressive role of newspapers in a nascent democracy, and ensured that Dainik Jagran fulfilled this role. He was uncompromising when it came to the principles he stood for, and this put him famously on a collision course with the government during the Emergency. He welcomed imprisonment, rather than sacrificing the democratic values that he stood for. He was elected Chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulation in 1974-75 and of PTI in 1975. He remained an executive member of the Indian Newspaper Society for 15 years and also served as its Deputy President.
