About : 

• The story of Hislop College began when a young Scottish missionary set out for India with fire in his belly and dreams in his eyes. Stephen Hislop’s humanitarian zeal motivated him to start in 1846, a boy’s school at Shukrawara, old Nagpur. The College was established in 1883. From a modest beginning, Hislop College has emerged as one of the finest institutions of higher learning in Central India with over 5000 young boys and girls.
• The College is run by the Hislop Education Society under the aegis of the Church of North India Synod. It was the first institution to provide higher education in the Vidarbha region. In 2009, the college celebrated its Quasquicentennial Anniversary, on completing 125 years. In 2016, the College was reaccredited in the third cycle by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bengaluru with ‘A’ Grade and 3.31 CGPA. It was also awarded the ‘Heritage Status Grant’ by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
• The College offers under-graduate and post-graduate courses in all three faculties, viz. Arts, Science and Commerce. These include Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, along with traditional life sciences; Business Administration and Computer Management in Commerce; and Communicative English, English Literature, Psychology and other social sciences in Arts. It also runs 12 post-graduate programs, including M.A. in Sociology, which is a grant-in-aid course.
• Besides, the curriculum also includes several add-on and short-term certificate courses. Today there are 21 departments, 12 post-graduate courses and 9 research centres recognized by Rastrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University. The College is known for its innovative research activity. 9 post-graduate departments are recognized by RTM Nagpur University as Centres of Research. 28 faculty members are Ph.D. supervisors. The College has implemented a mechanism of quality assurance and quality sustenance that includes a qualified and experienced faculty, demographically varied student composition, research related specialization, intensive student mentoring, a proactive training and placement process and a structured student feedback and parent-teacher association.
• The College campus is spread over 8 acres. The main building encloses a quadrangle that has a proscenium a basketball court and a lush green lawn fringed by a variety of trees and flower plants. There is a 40,000 sq. m. playground, a large auditorium, gymnasium and a cafeteria. The campus also houses a girls’ hostel.
• The College provides a conducive environment to students to develop their personality through extra-curricular activities and in sports.

About : 

• The origin of Scott Christian College can be traced to a village-church founded in 1809 by Rev. William Tobias Ringeltaube, the pioneering Missionary of London Missionary Society at Mylaudy.
• In 1818, it was upgraded as a Seminary and shifted to Nagercoil by Rev. Charles Mead. Rev. Dr. James Duthie, who took charge of the Seminary in 1860, played a remarkable role in elevating it to a College.
• With the magnanimous contribution of 1000 Pounds from Mr. Septimus Scott and a grant from the Government of Travancore, the Seminary was elevated to a Second Grade College affiliated to the University of Madras in 1893. The historic journey of Scott Christian College commenced with 12 students and Rev. Dr. James Duthie as the first Principal. In 1924, the Library was equipped with up-to-date volumes of 4000 books.
• Sh. G. H. Marsden, took charge as Principal in 1927 and paid special attention to increase the facilities for Science Departments. His selfless efforts helped in building the small Intermediate College that accommodated around 140 students. Women students were admitted 1927 onwards.
• Compulsory games were introduced for men students of the College in 1927. Thereafter, the College students excelled in games and sports. Degree courses were introduced at Scott Christian College in 1950. The College was affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University in 1966 and celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 1967. The degree classes were shifted to the present campus during 1970-1971.
• Post-graduate courses commenced from 1971. Now there are 17 Under-graduate programmes; 12 Post-graduate programmes and 10 M. Phil courses Economics (1986), Chemistry (2006), History (2006) and Mathematics (2006).
• In 1990 the college was affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli and celebrated the centenary in 1993.
• Since 1990, many departments have been up-graded into recognized research departments. At present, there are 11 departments recognized as Centres for Research with 74 approved research guides who guide research scholars.
• The most historic event in the annals of Scott Christian College was the status of autonomy conferred on it in April 2005. The NAAC Peer Team visited the campus and the college was re-accredited with ‘A’ grade.
• This temple of higher education glows with a Green Campus that speaks volumes about the tireless efforts of the management, staff and students. This eco-friendly campus insists on a plastic free environment creating a serene atmosphere that facilitates and kindles the spirit of learning.
• The National Institutions ranking work frame, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India ranked Scott Christian College (Autonomous) at the 37^th place among the colleges in India.

About : 

• Anagarika Dharmapala, who played a leading role in the revival of Buddhism in his native place Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and other parts of the world, was born on 17^th September, 1864 in the Pettah district of Colombo. His childhood name was David Hewavitame. He grew up in an atmosphere of traditional Sinhala piety. From a young age, he took refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, and promised to observe the Five Precepts.
  
• At the age of 9, young David was initiated into the vow of Brahmacharya by his father, and, was advised to be content with whatever he got to eat, and to sleep less. Anagarika’s temperament was ascetic in nature and he loved solitude, meditation and study. He came in contact with Madame Blavatsky and the Theosophical Society and became a follower. He left his home at the age of twenty to dedicate his life in the service of humanity. He renounced his English name and called himself ‘Anagarika’ or ‘homeless one’, ‘Dharmapala’ or ‘the protector of Dharma’. He helped in establishing schools, and propagated Buddhist ideals.
  
• Dharmapala’s visit to Bodh Gaya, India in January, 1891 changed his life, and the course of modern Buddhist history. When he visited the temple at Bodh Gaya, the place was in shambles. He decided to take on the task of taking care and protecting the holy place. He travelled to various parts of the world to mobilize funds for renovation of the Buddhist temple and founded the Mahabodhi Society in Colombo on 31^st May, 1891. The office of the Mahabodhi Society was shifted to Calcutta in early 1892. Dharmapala also started the Maha Bodhi Journal to facilitate interchange of news between the Buddhist countries.
  
• Anagarika Dharmapala attended the World’s Parliament on Religion in Chicago in 1893. He was one of the most popular speakers at the Parliament. All his life, Anagarika continued to lecture and write about Buddhist principles. He set up Sri Dharmarajika Chaitya Vihara at Calcutta and the London Buddhist Vihara.
  
• Anagarika Dharmapala died on 29^th April, 1933 at Sarnath.

• Robert Caldwell was born at Clady, Northern Ireland, on May 7, 1814 to Scottish parents. Initially self-taught and religious, young Caldwell graduated from the University of Glasgow and was fascinated by the comparative study of languages. At 24, Caldwell arrived in Madras on January 8, 1838 as a missionary of the London Missionary Society and later joined the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Mission (SPG). Caldwell was married in 1844 to Eliza Mault.
• As a missionary, his achievements were tremendous, he converted the dry lands with palm trees in Idayangudi into an area fit for human livelihood.
• Caldwell was an ardent lover of Tamil, Tamil Art and Tamil Culture. The Tamil works ‘Narkarunai Thianamalai‘ and ‘Thamarai Thadagam‘ were written by him. He had also written articles viz., ‘Ganasudhanam‘ and ‘Narkarunai‘. The books such as ‘Diayanamalai‘ and ‘Baratha Kanda Puradhanam‘ were also written by him.
• He proved the relationship between Tamil Nadu and foreign countries by quoting examples of words such as ‘Thogai‘ as ‘Thugi‘ in Hebrew and ‘Arisi‘ as ‘Arusa‘ in Greek language.
• He carried out excavations in historic places like Punnaikkayal and Korkai and tried to bring the portals of ancient Tamilagam into the lime light.
• He knew 18 languages. He was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society. He was awarded the title of LLD and DD. His most impressive work was “A Comparative Study of Grammar of Dravidian Languages“. He had also to his credit a book on “The History of Tirunelveli” in English.
• He breathed his last on August 28, 1891.

• The Religious Order of “Little Sisters of the Poor” was founded in 1839 in France by a French lady, Jeanne Jugan, whose religious name was Sr. Mary of the Cross. She was born in Cancale, in France on 25 October 1792. Her father was a sailor who was lost at sea when she was only four years old. The young Jeanne Jugan supported her mother’s efforts to raise the young family by working as kitchen maid till she was 25 years old.
  
• She then left her home for Saint Servan where she worked as a nurse’s aide at Le Rosais Hospital. Refusing all offers of marriage, Jeanne Jugan turned her life into a mission for God’s work.
  
• It was her desire to serve God and the poor, especially the weakest and the most destitute. Joining the Third Order of the Admirable Mother to begin with, Jeanne Jugan‘s life changed when an elderly woman blind and semi-paralysed, shivering in one of the coldest winter evenings of 1839 knocked on her door. Jeanne opened her door and her heart and offered her own bed. Thus the seed for service to the poor was sown leading to the founding of the Order of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Starting with Jeanne & three young companions, the Little Sisters are now running Homes for the Aged in 31 countries, caring for elderly people of all castes, creeds and religions until their death, arranging for the fulfillment of all their needs in the twilight of their lives.
  
• Through a lifetime shrouded in obscurity and often neglect, Jeanne Jugan retained her faith and love and served God in her silent, gentle manner. Her work lives on in the Order of the Little Sisters of the Poor. They run 13 Homes for the Aged in India, starting in 1832 at Kolkata. The Bangalore Home at Hosur Road founded in 1900 co-ordinates the work and mission.
  
• The Homes are run as a non-profitable organization where the elderly residents are cared for free of charge. They are maintained through collections from generous people. Besides, two of their sisters go out daily seeking donation in cash or kind from well-wishers. Doctors visit the Homes regularly and offer medical care to the residents, as do physiotherapist handicraft units in the Homes directed by one of the Sisters, help evolve the hidden talents of the residents giving their lives purpose and meaning. Friends and benefactors also provided the Homes with TVs and DVDs. The residents are encouraged to keep in contact with their families and the Home is open to visits from their loved ones.
  
• Sr. Mary of the Cross, as Jeanne Jugan came to be called, has left a rich legacy in the Order of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Rising from the silence and obscurity of her life, she is being canonized this year, a model of sanctity and selfless service.

About : 

• Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg was a German theologist, missionary and scholar who made India his home and did pioneering work in bringing the West close to the Indian Culture.
  
• He arrived in Tranquebar on 9^th July 1706, with a purpose of introducing German Lutheran pietism to the people who were following various Bhakti cults, but his encounter with people and their culture transformed him and he became an expert of Indian culture and religious heritage.
  
• Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg initiated a new way of learning Tamil language, and translated the New Testament into Tamil.
  
• Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg translated most of the Tamil grammatical prose into Latin. He composed the first Grammatical Dumalica, which was published in 1716 in Halle, Germany. His letters, poetries and other correspondences contain useful information, which has been written, on paper but some are still found in the form of palm leaf manuscripts.
  
• Ziegenbalg wrote two comprehensive treatises on literature. In 1711, he wrote ‘Malabarian Gods’ in which he quoted long passages from 176 works including Sivavackiam, Gnanavenba, 64 Thiruvilayadal Puranam, Udalkuru Thathuram and etc. The second book was ‘Genealogy of Malabarian Gods’ in which he incorporated 145 letters written by Tamil scholars.
  
• Ziegenbalg introduced a Tamil printing press in Tranquebar in 1712. The ‘Nirubam’, a small circular, marked the first printing.
  
• Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg was in a way involved in bringing social changes in contemporary Tamil Nadu. He was instrumental in establishing the first school for girls in 1710.
  
• Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg marked the beginning of an interesting chapter in Indo-German relationship.
  
• He died in 1719 in India.

About : 

• Fine art, over the centuries, has drawn inspiration from devotional and religious experiences. The paintings of St. Aloysius College Chapel, Mangalore are among the finest specimens of paintings in India, and truly constitute a national treasure.
• Executed by Antonio Moscheni, a Jesuit Brother from Italy during 1899-1901, the paintings are of three types: frescoes (paintings on wet plaster), tempera (paintings on dry plaster) and panels painted on canvas and fixed to the ceilings. The masterly use of light and shade by the artist creates a sense of depth, making his images life-like. The rich colours and the delicate touch evoke the mysterious presence of the divine.
• The layout of the paintings follows a threefold division. The central ceiling and the wall behind the main alter of the Chapel depict the life of the noble youth, Aloysius Gonzaga, the Patron of the College, who renounced a dukedom to become a Jesuit and died in the service of the plague stricken in Rome in 1591 at the age of 23. Second comes the two aisles of the chapel, painted with the life of Jesus Christ as described in the Gospels. These are painted on the walls as also on the ceilings together with the texts describing the events. The third set of paintings, on the slope of the roof and the two levels of arches, depict the saints of the Church and of the jesuit order.
• The artist, Br. Moscheni, worked for more than two years on the paintings, which are believed to be designed after the Sistine Chapel in Rome. When the extent of these paintings is considered, one is left with a sense of amazement at the perfection of execution and the speed of painting which the artist must have possessed.
• Late Shri C. Rajagopalachari, one of the greatest exponents of the study of India’s culture and heritage commented thus on the paintings of the St. Aloysius College Chapel : “It is an education and an elevation. As you enter it, your heart is ennobled and you soar to higher things. Even the fanatic would shed every drop of his fanaticism in the face of such humanising glory“. Dr. O.P. Agarwal, Director General of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) who supervised the restoration work of the paintings in 1993 remarked : “The paintings are a labour of divine love and some of the finest paintings we now have in India“.

• The Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), Vellore was founded by Dr. Ida Scudder in January 1900.
• The spirit of service was stirred in the mind of young Ida in 1890 while visiting her parents in South India where her father was a missionary doctor. Seeing that medical needs of Indian women in childbirth was an area where much needed to be done, she decided to address the problem herself. After studying Medicine at the Cornell University in America, she returned to Vellore and started a small clinic in 1900, which today has grown into a multidisciplinary healthcare, teaching and research facility of international repute.
• CMCH, Vellore has made significant contributions to Medical Education in India, having trained over ten thousand graduates in healthcare disciplines. At present, the institution runs graduate courses in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medical Record Science, Medical laboratory Technology and Nursing. Postgraduate training in various medical and nursing disciplines and a number of diploma programmes in Allied Health Sciences are also offered. The mission of the institution is to provide education of the highest grade, underpinned by a sound ethical framework and without commercial motives.
• Community outreach and Primary Health Care for far-flung rural communities has been given high priority at the CMCH. Ida Scudder‘s concept of “Roadside” clinics in which a team of staff set out in a bullock cart with medical supplies and went out into the surrounding rural communities to provide health care had sowed the seeds of an innovative and path breaking Community Health and Development (CHAD) programme, which has recently been commended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the best Primary Health Care programme in India. The Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA), College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH) and Low Cost Effective Care (LCEC) units of the CMCH have also been effectively participating in Primary Health Care and Community Outreach.
• The main hospital in Vellore town covers both secondary level and advanced tertiary level care including complex neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, organ transplantation and oncology. In the area of tertiary care, some of the milestones the institution has recorded include the first Leprosy reconstructive surgery in the world in 1948, first open heart surgery in India in 1961, first Rehabilitation institute in India in 1966 and first bone marrow transplant in India in 1986. The objective of the institution in the area of tertiary care is to provide high quality care, using indigenous materials wherever possible, making technology cost-effective and setting up a frame-work for ethical decision making.

• “Orunodoi” (meaning sunrise), started in 1846 by an American missionary was the first newspaper in Assam. It was also the first newspaper in Assamese.
• Though “Orunodoi” was launched primarily for the propagation of Christianity, its contribution towards advancement of Assamese literature, culture and society was immense. Along with concentration on news with international coverage, the newspaper regularly featured critiques on literature, science, etc. The publication initiated the Assamese middle class into a literary movement. In fact, Ananda Ram Dhekial Phukan described as Raja Ram Mohan Roy of Assam, Hem Chandra Barua recognised as the Panini of Assamese language and Gunabhi Ram Barua eulogised as the Vidyasagar of Assam started their literary careers in the pages of “Orunodoi“. It was the first journal to publish the ethnological studies of various tribes of the then Assam like the Aka, Adi and Khamti. The pages of “Orunodoi” also waged war against the social evils of opium, alcohol etc.
• The role played by “Orunodoi” in the establishment of a separate identity for Assamese language is well recognised. Though this newspaper had to close down, the publication played a significant role in raising the levels of public awareness and its popular appeal led to other newspapers being launched. In later period other Assamese newspapers and journals continued the good work for the advancement of Assamese language and literature. During the Independence movement, the pioneering newspapers were “Assamiya“, “Assam Bilasini“, “Assam Sevak” and “Advocate of Assam“. The newspapers published from Sylhet district, then a part of Assam also supported the non-cooperation movement. Among the prominent publications from that district were “Deshbrata“, “Janashakti” and “Surma“.
• The journalists in Assam have always participated in the struggle to protect the freedom of the press whenever it was under threat. There have been instances of journalists who suffered death at the hands of extremists.

• Dr. William Carey, a cobbler-turned missionary, is called the Father of Modern Missions. His life’s motto was, “EXPECT GREAT THINGS FROM GOD, ATTEMPT GREAT THINGS FOR GOD“. His 41 years continuous stay in India, ever since de-embarking on 11^th November 1793 at Calcutta, till his death on 9^th June 1834 is a testimony to this simple faith.
• William Carey was born on 17^th August 1761 in England. Though he studied only upto 8^th Standard his achievements in academic, social and spiritual fields far exceed the work of many Ph. Ds put together. He offered himself as a missionary on 9^th January 1793.
• The very first obstacle to his work as a missionary in India was the East India Company which hated Missionaries and was hostile to them. He had to take shelter in the Dutch colony of Serampore. The death of his first wife in 1781 and second wife in 1821, and later of his two beloved sons, coupled with the deep poverty due to total refusal by the East India Company to remit money from England, put him in great difficulty forcing him to work as a mason many a time and as an indigo planter later. The terrible fire which destroyed his major translation work, the repeated attacks of Malaria and Cholera are some or the examples of the refining fire. In the midst of such circumstances any normal human-being would give up and return to a much more comfortable life in England. William Carey worked hard. Some of the contributions of his life’s labour were the starting of 100 rural schools encouraging girls’ education which swelled to 900. He also compiled dictionaries of Sanskrit, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu which are still accepted as authorities. He wrote grammars of Marathi, Sanskrit, Panjabi, Telugu and Bhutanese and translated the Bible in 34 languages including Pashto. In addition he translated the Ramayana and Mahabharata to Bengali, and started Serampore College, the only institution imparting high academic education and theological teaching under the same roof. He started the Horticulture Society of India which has provided a wide variety of plants to the country, laid the foundation of the Botanical Gardens in Calcutta. He also started the Weekly “THE FRIEND OF INDIA“ which later has amalgamated with “THE STATESMAN“ in 1875 and the first Indian Newspaper “SAMACHAR DARPAN“ was printed by him from 1818. He took up the crusade against the burning of widows and was joined by Dr. Raja Ram Mohan Roy culminating in the successful banning of “SATI” in 1829. In addition to all this, he introduced the concept of Savings Bank to help the poor farmers get financial assistance.
