About :

  • Situated in the heart of Chandni Chowk, Hardayal Municipal Public Library (HMPL) is one of the very few oldest buildings that have been able to withstand the onslaught of modern times. This is the oldest public library of Delhi, named after the great revolutionary and freedom fighter Lala Hardayal, who was a resident of Old Delhi.
  • The library was set up in 1862, as part of reading club meant for the British. Englishmen coming to India used to carry a lot of books with them to read in the several month long sea journey. These books were given to the reading room called the Institute Library, which was a part of the Lawrence Institute, named after the then Viceroy of India. The building was built between 1861 and 1866. Today the building is called the Town Hall and houses the offices of the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
  • In 1902, the Library was renamed as the Delhi Public Library and shifted to the small Kaccha Bagh building with a staff of one Librarian, one clerk, one peon. It wasn’t enough to accommodate its readers.
  • On 23rd December 1912, a bomb was hurled at Lord Hardinge while he was going on an elephant in a procession through Company Bagh, (Now known as Gandhi Maidan) but he escaped unharmed. To commemorate Hardinge’s escape, a committee was formed soon after to construct a building for the Delhi Public Library under the President-ship of Rai Bahadur Lala Sheo Prasad. The committee is said to have collected Rs. 70,000/-, Khan Sahib Haji Baksh Elahi donated Rs. 14,000/-, the Maharaja of Kashmir Rs. 10,000/-, and there were various other donors. The Library was renamed as Hardinge Municipal Public Library in 1916 when it shifted to the new building with its old collection and furniture.
  • The name ‘Hardinge Municipal Public Library’ was further shortened as Hardinge Library in 1942 consequent upon an agreement between the Library and the erstwhile Municipal Committee which gave the Library the status of an autonomous body with 100% grant-in-aid from Municipal Corporation. In 1970 Hardinge Library become Hardayal Municipal Public Library.
  • The governance of the Library vests in a Governing body called the Managing Committee. The Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is the ex-officio-President of the Managing Committee of the Library. There are six elected sitting members of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and one each from south & east DMC, nominated by it to the Managing Committee. Four persons elected by the subscribers of the Library.
  • There are about 3123 Gazettes of India & Delhi Gazettes: those are quite useful for Govt. notifications since 1917 to 1998 and ten years five newspapers i.e. 1) Times of India, 2) The Hindustan Times, 3) Nav Bharat Times (Hindi), 4) Hindustan (Hindi), 5) Jansatta.
  • The library décor is antique with ancient book shelves and almirahs. It has a unique collection of more than 1,70,000 books in Hindi, English, Urdu, Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit. This is one of the few Libraries in the world with a collection of at least 8,000 rare books. The oldest book in the library is block-printed. Some of the oldest books are “A Relation of Some years, by Travaile Begvenne, 1634”, “History of the World, by Sir Walter Raleigh, (1676 to 1677)”, “Mahabharata” in Persian written by Abul Fazal Faizi etc.

About :

  • The foundation of Orthodox Theological Seminary (OTS), known as Old Seminary or Cottayam Syrian College, was laid in February, 1813. The Seminary is run by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the St. Thomas Christians, commonly known as ‘Malankara Nazranis’. This is a heritage monument recognized by the Government for its importance as a two hundred year old quadrangular edifice where English education was started for the first time in the state of Kerala. The institution, which once served as a co-ordinating centre of public education under the Christian missionaries continues to serve as the earliest non-Roman Catholic Seminary for Christian Priests.
  • Besides the serene Chapel of the Seminary, the structure holds the Nalukettu (four sided courtyard made of wood) depicting the rich architectural beauty of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Nalukettu structure today houses a heritage museum which acts as a repository of 2000 years of Christianity in the country. According to the Department of Archaeology, Government of Kerala, the Old Seminary Building which is approximately 200 years old and is one of the earliest public institutions in Kerala, has a historical significance in the context of Kerala’s socio cultural history.
  • A modern phase of the history of the Seminary began in 1965 when it assumed the status of a theological college affiliated to the University system of the senate of Serampore (West Bengal). The present day campus houses:
    • Federated Faculty for Research in Religion and Culture (FFRRC) which is a joint ecumenical programme of Orthodox, Mar Thomas and CSI Seminaries in Kerala, for Research-oriented higher studies in Theology.
    • Sruti School of Music which is a recognized centre of Christian music-studies with special emphasis on Syriac Music.
    • Mar Gregorios Foundation (M.G.F.) which is a centre to promote the ideals and philanthropic services of the late Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios, the former Principal and world renowned thinker.
    • Pratyasa Counselling Programme which is a centre to cater to the counselling studies and needs.
    • Divyabodhanam which is a centre to promote and train in the faith needs of clergy and the laymen.
    • Saroopya School of Art which is a centre to train clergy and laity in ancient art forms, and
    • Smriti which is a campus which houses an auditorium, a media-room, an ecumenical hall and modernized library cum archives.

About :

  • The Gaiety Theatre of Shimla, the hub of theatrical, art and literary activities of Shimla, the Capital of Himachal Pradesh, is a remarkable piece of Victorian-theatre Architecture.
  • In the second quarter of the nineteenth century, the town of Shimla (earlier, Simla) had get been settled. The houses were few and far between. Some years were still to pass before this unusual little town, high in the hills, found its place in the sun as the ‘summer capital’ of British India. From a rugged outpost, Shimla rapidly transformed itself into one of the most elegant towns. Gaiety Theatre, which opened in 1887, was an important part of the Town Hall. It was a marvel of architecture with perfect acoustics and theatre facilities. A hub of the performing arts, Gaiety Theatre saw legendary artists perform on its historical stage. The first play, a comedy-farce to be staged at the Gaiety was somehow appropriately named, ‘Time Will Tell’. Hundreds of plays, musicals, theatre and music performances over time, and the Gaiety, have told a story that has spanned events both big and small; events with theatrical and historical.
  • The Gaiety has been compared to other reception halls. It had been called a miniature version of London’s Royal Albert Hall. It has been likened to halls in Vienna. Its diverse elements have been compared with some of best period halls in the world. For all that, the Gaiety Theatre is unique. Inspiration may have come from elsewhere, but today, this has the distinction of being what may be the only authentic Victorian hall and stage in Asia.
  • Gaiety Theatre continues to showcase the various facets of Indian arts, culture and theatre. Gaiety Theatre is one legacy of the British Empire that India has acknowledged and wholeheartedly appreciated.
  • The Gaiety Theatre – or the Gaiety Theatre Complex as it is now called – has been painstaking restored and sensitively rebuilt. The restoration of this Complex was started in the year 2003. Wherever fresh construction has been done, this has been done in keeping with the essential character of the building largely using traditional materials.

About :

  • India Post has featured some of its landmark post office buildings on postage stamps over the years. This year, India Post celebrates the 100 years of Mumbai G.P.O. and Agra H.P.O. buildings.
  • Mumbai General Post Office :
    • The earliest records of the existence of Bombay (now Mumbai) General Post Office (G.P.O.) indicate that the post office was located in St. George Fort near Apollo Pier. The building was lost in a fire, following which the G.P.O. moved into another building built for it in 1869. In course of time, the said building became inadequate for the G.P.O. and plan to construct a new building outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Station, earlier known as Victoria Terminus Railway Station, was undertaken in 1902. Jhon Begg, Consulting Architect to the Government, designed the G.P.O. building. The construction of the building was completed in March, 1913 and the G.P.O. moved into it in April, 1913.
    • The Mumbai G.P.O. is built in IndoSaracenic style with a solid exterior and well ventilated interiors built in local Kurla basalt with dressings of yellow stone from Malad and white stone from Dhrangadhara. The architecture reflects strong influences of Islamic architecture in its skyline dominated by domes and minarets. The monumental structure stretches to a length of 522 feet. The height of the dome is 119 feet. The facade is symmetrical along the central axis, with the centre punctuated by a front porch and capped by a dome. The dome fashioned after the Bijapur dome has a diameter of 65 feet. The building is listed as a Gradel heritage building in the Heritage Regulation for Greater Bombay, 1995.
    • Mumbai G.P.O. has come a long way since its birth and has evolved into a modern fully computerized post office representing the changing face of India Post.
  • Agra Head Post Office :
    • Agra Head Post Office was built in 1913. It is located on the Mall Road of the beautiful cantonment area of Agra.
    • Agra H.P.O. building, an important landmark of Agra has two beautiful porches on both sides and a 45 feet high dome in the middle of the building. The building also finds a place in the list of Postal Heritage buildings. Keeping with the times, this office is also fully computerized.

About :

  • In the early Indian society, religion was an inclusive presence whose role went beyond faith and worship – it was in itself a way of life. Temples in ancient and early-medieval India were not just abodes of God, but thriving hubs of social activity as well. It is no surprise then, that temples represent some of the finest samples of architectural heritage from that era. Two such examples are the Arasavalli and Srikurmam temples in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Arasavalli Temple :
    • This Sun temple from 7th century AD takes its name from the Arasavalli village near Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, where it is situated. It is believed to have been built by Devendra Verma, the ruler of Kalinga. The unique design employed in the temple ensures that twice a year, in March and September, the sun’s rays touch the feet of the deity, the Sun God.
    • This temple is a testimonial to the architectural skills of the Maharanas, the Vishwakarma sculptors of Orissa. It is a Panchayatana temple with Aditya in the centre and Ganesh, Shiva, Parvati and Vishnu in four corners of the quadrangle. The five feet image of Surya bearing lotus buds, carved out of a rare ancient stone called Arunashila, flanked by his consorts on a seven horse driven chariot is the main idol for worship.
    • It is believed that the Sun God is the God of health. People worship here to heal their diseases. It is also believed that a dip in the holy waters of the Pushkarini pond in front of the temple fulfills all the wishes of the devotees. Suryanarayanaswami Kalyanotsavam, an important five day annual event, is celebrated at this place during March-April.
  • Srikurmam Temple :
    • Situated in Srikurmam village near Srikakulam, it is the only temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the avatara of Srikurmam, i.e. tortoise. The temple is believed to have been built before 2nd century AD, and re-developed in 7th century AD. Rulers of the Chola and the Kalinga dynasties have contributed to its construction and development.
    • This is the only temple in ancient Dravidian architectural style in this region. The temple is noted for its imposing five storied gopuram. The two hundred granite pillars in the temple premises have inscriptions in Devnagri script, carried out over the period from 11th to 19th century AD. The 41 panels of mural paintings on the walls of the temple depicting mythological events resemble the frescoes of Ajanta caves in Maharashtra. One unique feature of the temple is that it has Dhwajastambams (flag masts) in front and back of the temple as the deity faces the back of the temple on the west side.
    • Dolotsavam is the most important festival celebrated here, falling in the month of March every year, when around 50,000 pilgrims congregate.

Name : Kṛṣṇa Deva Rāya

Born on Feb 16, 1471 at Hampi, Karnataka, India [the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire]

Died on 1529 at Hampi, Karnataka, India

About :

  • The Vijayanagara Empire was established in 1336 by Sangama brothers and it was ruled by four imperial dynasties namely Sangama, Salva, Tulva & Aravidu. Krishnadevaraya belonged to the third dynasty of the empire namely Tulva. He was the son of Nagalamba and Narasanayaka also called as Narasimharaya.
  • He came to power in February 1509. But there are some more evidences which prove that January 24, 1510 is the Coronation date of Krishnadevaraya. In all probability the Coronation ceremony of Krishnadevaraya was held twice i.e., the first coronation happened in February 1509. Then, after suppressing the rebellious local chiefs he was once again coronated on 11th March 1513. Krishnadevaraya‘s invasions against Ummatturu chiefs and Kalinga, his relationship with Bahmani Kingdom and the capture of Raichur and Mudgal were more illustrious than any other achievements of the earlier kings.
  • He maintained cordial relations with the Portuguese and he improved trade with them. Krishnadevaraya was a learned manHe composed Amukthamalyada and Marichi Parinayamu. Amukthamalyada was composed in Sanskrit and Marichi Parinayamu in Telugu. Many works are attributed to Krishnadevaraya by historical sources but they are yet to be accepted by and large. He had eight poets in his court and they were called as Ashtadiggajas. During his period Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil literature, music, dance and drama were patronised equally.
  • His contribution towards the art and architecture of the empire is an important chapter in the history of art. He built Balakrishna, Ananathashayana and Lakshminarasimha temple in his capital. Besides, he added a Kalyanamantapa, a hundred pillared halls, and a stone chariot to Vithala temple at Hampi. Apart from this, throughout the empire he contributed for the development of temples. Special mentions can be made of Thiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Srirangam, Tirupathi and Kalahasti. He was a special devotee of Lord Venkateshwara of Tirupathi. His administration and his lifestyle were experienced and described in their travelogues by Barbosa, Tom Pires, Domingo Paes and Nuniz, apart from the description of the empire and the city.
  • The above achievements of Krishnadevaraya contributed to his stature among the emperors of Vijayanagara.

About :

  • Brihadeeswarar Temple was built by King Raja Raja-1 of Chola dynasty at Thanjavurthe capital of his Kingdom, in Tamil Nadu.
  • Originally named as Rajarajeswaram by Raja Raja Chola, it is now called Brihadeeswaram in Sanskrit & Peruvudaiyarkoli in TamilThe construction of this granite temple began in AD 1003-04 and it was consecrated in the year AD 1009-10. One of the outstanding temples in South India, the Brihadeeswarar Temple is a tribute to the Chola dynasty’s power, wealth and artistic merit. It showcases the pure form of Dravida temple architecture and mathematical prowess & symmetry, covering the skills of architecture, sculpture, painting and bronze casting.
  • The temple occupies an area measuring 800′ x 400′. The 64.8 m tall tower over the sanctum sanctorum is testimony to the engineering skill of the Cholas. 13 tier pyramid shaped vimanam (tower) raised from a square base is topped by a huge monolithic cupola carved from an 81.3 tonne block of granite. It was raised with the aid of a 6 km long inclined plane.
  • Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the sanctum sanctorum houses “Mahalingam” in the shrine, measuring 4 meters in height. A monolithic Nandi chiseled out of a single rock, measures 5.94 meters in length, 2.51 meters in breadth and 3.66 meters in height.
  • The temple is replete with famous series of paintings by Chola, Nayak and Maratha artists. Beautiful Chola fresco paintings of about 1000 AD and the Nayaks paintings of 17th century can be seen on the four side walls of the central cell along the circumambulatory passage.
  • A complete inventory of a number of copper, silver, gold and brass images gifted to the temple by Rajaraja, his family members, officers and others are referred in the inscriptions of this temple.
  • This temple is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1946 and is being maintained as a protected monument of national importance. Recognising its unique architectural excellence, UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Monument.
