• The Central Bureau of Investigation traces its origin from the Special Police Establishment which was set up in 1941 by Government of India to investigate cases of bribery and corruption in transactions concerned with the War & Supply Department of India during World War-II.
• During the early stages of World War-II, the then Government of India realized that the enormously expanded expenditure for purposes connected with the war had brought about a situation in which unscrupulous and antisocial persons, both officials and non-officials, were enriching themselves dishonestly at the cost of the public and the government. The Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies, functioning under the State Governments, were found inadequate to cope with this challenge. Accordingly, it became necessary to set up a separate organization to investigate offences connected with these transactions. Vide an executive order, an organization i.e. Special Police Establishment (S.P.E.), was created by the Government of India in 1941. This organization was to be headed by a Deputy Inspector General of Police.
• The SPE was mandated to investigate cases of bribery and corruption in transactions concerned with the War and Supply Department of the Government of India and its superintendence was vested in the then War & Supply Department.
• Towards the end of 1942, the activities of the SPE were extended to include cases of corruption in the Railways, which was strategically concerned with the movement and supply of war material.
• As the need for a Central Government agency to investigate cases of bribery and corruption by Central Government employees was felt even after the end of the war, Delhi Special Police Establishment Act was enacted in 1946. This Act transferred the superintendence of the SPE to the Home Department and its functions were enlarged to cover all departments of the Government of India. The jurisdiction of the SPE, which extended to all the Union Territories, could now be extended to the States with the consent of the concerned State Government.
• Central Bureau of Investigation was established on 01.04.1963 vide resolution of Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India with the DSPE as one of its Divisions. Initially the offences that were notified by the Central Government related only to corruption by Central Government servants. In due course, with the setting up of a large number of public sector undertakings, the employees of these undertakings were also brought under the purview of CBI. Similarly, with the Nationalization of the Banks in 1969, the Public Sector Banks and their employees also came within its ambit.
• Beginning 1965, the CBI has also been entrusted with the investigation of Economic Offences and important conventional crimes such as murders, kidnapping, terrorist crimes, etc., on a selective basis.
• Over the years, the CBI has grown into a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional investigating agency mainly entrusted with the following functions:
  • Enquiry and investigation of cases
  • Prosecution of CBI investigated case
  • Preventive vigilance functions
  • National Central Bureau – India connected with International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO) and
  • Coordination, Training and Research
• Today, this agency has a broad jurisdiction that extends to cases related to corruption, economic offences, bank frauds, financial crimes, organized crime, wild life related offences, human trafficking, smuggling of Arts & Antiquities, cyber offences and other major crimes.
• CBI also acts as the National Central Bureau i.e. Interpol India. It functions as the focal point for Indian Law Enforcement Agencies as well as Foreign Law Enforcement Agencies basis seeking and providing informal assistance of Police to Police operation.
• CBI also acts as nodal authority to receive and respond to all requests for assistance in the matters relating to United Nations Convention on Transnational Organized Crimes (UNTOC) and the supplementary protocols thereto.
• In last 60 years of its existence, CBI has gained reputation as a highly professional investigation agency, enjoying confidence of the executive, legislative, judiciary and the common man alike.

• The Battalion was raised on 6 September 1797 for the Bombay Presidency as part of treaty with the Raja of Travancore as the 2^nd Battalion, 5^th Regiment Native Infantry of the Travancore Regiment. The Battalion’s gallant role in the storming of Madgala in the Abyssinian Campaign (1867-68) earned it the honour of being designated as a Light Infantry Regiment.
• In the First World War, the Battalion fought against the Turks in Mesopotamia and won laurels in action at Shaiba, Kul-El-Amara and Ctesiphon. In the Second World War, the Battalion won undying fame in the bloody assault on the formidable Italian fortress of Keren. Under 10 Indian Division in Italy, NK Yeshwant Ghadge was conferred with the Victoria Cross posthumously at Citta-de-Castello for his supreme act of valour.
• The Battalion was selected for parachute duties under 2^nd Indian Airborne Division in 1946 as 3^rd Parachute Battalion, the Maharatta Light Infantry. In 1947, the battalion rushed to Jammu and Kashmir to stem the onslaught of Pakistani forces and fought legendary battles at Naushera and Jhangar.
• On 15 April 1952, the Battalion became part of the Parachute Regiment Unit and was redesignated as Second Battalion, the Parachute Regiment. The Battalion took part in liberation of Goa in 1961. In 1965 Indo-Pak war, the Battalion saw action in Rann of Kutch and Lahore Theatres. In 1971, the Battalion won the distinction of carrying out the first airborne assault of the Indian Army by paradropping in the Eastern Sector and was the first Indian Army unit to enter Dacca.
• From 1990-1991, the Battalion served in OP HIFAZAT (Counter Insurgency operations) in the North East. On 1^st April 1999, the Battalion was selected for conversion to Special Forces. Immediately post conversion one team was inducted to Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) to rescue Indian Army Hostages held by the rebel groups. It was one of its kind mission conducted by any country under the UN Flag and was executed perfectly and all hostages were rescued without any casualties.
• In 2006, the Battalion was inducted in J&K and during this period, Captain R Harshan made supreme sacrifice during a pivotal operation and was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
• The Battalion witnessed history, as it oversaw the peaceful formation of the newest country in the world when Sudan was split into Sudan and South Sudan.
• The Battalion has distinguished itself in Live Situation Training role in North East and Jammu & Kashmir and in counter terrorism role at Bengaluru after 26/11 attack. The unit has won Three Chief of Army Staff’s Unit Citation, Governor of J&K Unit Appreciation, Two Army Cdr’s Citation and a UN Force Commander Unit Citation. The 427 awards won by the Battalion include one Victoria Cross, four Mahavir Chakras, one Ashoka Chakra, two Kirti Chakra, 17 Vir Chakras, 07 Shaurya Chakras, 48 Sena Medals and one Yudh Seva Medal. Most impressively the Battalion has won 25 Battle Honours and 5 Theatre honours, making it one of the most decorated Battalion in the Indian Army today.

• In the 21^st century, India holds a strong position in terms of science and technology. India also serves as a knowledge warehouse with the existence of its many institutions catering to science and technology which come with qualified and trained manpower. IITs have played an important role in the development of science and technology based economy and society in India and abroad.
• IIT Roorkee, has an illustrious history and a glorious past. The Thomason College, the oldest engineering college in India, owes its birth to the waters of Mother Ganges. As early as the year 1845, Lieutenant Baird Smith of the Bengal Engineers, then Superintendent of the Eastern Jumna Canal, began training young Indians at Saharanpur in Civil Engineering for the grade of Sub-Assistant Executive Engineer and in 1846 twenty candidates were admitted to this class. In 1847, the Roorkee College of civil engineering was established which later was known as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering.
• The University of Roorkee celebrated the completion of 150 years of its existence in 1996-1997. • INTERPOL (The International Criminal Police Organization) is the world’s largest international police organization and an inter-governmental organization with 195 member countries. • Chess one of the most ancient, intellectual and cognitive games, is a combination of a sport, scientific thinking and an element of the art. Chess the game, which according to Voltaire, ‘reflects most honour on human wit‘ originated in ancient India. A number of similarities exist between modern chess and Indian game called Chaturanga, which dates back to the 5^th Century AD. Its original name in Sanskrit was Chaturangal, means ‘four arms’ or ‘four members’. It was also the Indian word for Army, especially the four components of the army.
• In the 6^th century Chaturanga spread from India to Persia and a little later the Arabs learned the game. Chess entered Europe around 10^th century. Over the years, Chess has grown into others parts of the world. The modern era of Chess, however dates back to about the 17^th century when the pieces on the board gained their present form. By the 20^th century Chess, the game of honour and wit, has spread all over the world.
• After the birth of FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs) in1924, Chess attained the status of dynamic sport. The advantages of the internet took the game to new heights. It is the only type of game which allows real competitions to be held in virtual space. FIDE aims at assisting the best chess players to continue to achieve new peaks of excellence and to increase the pool of talent from which new champions would emerge.
• FIDE was formed on 20.7.1924, the closing day of the first unofficial Chess Olympiad at Paris. This day (20^th July), is also recognised as the “International Day of Chess”.
• Constituted as a non-governmental institution, FIDE was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organization in 1999. In 200 countries, under the banner of FIDE, more than 10 million players are registered, who take part in over 5000 different tournaments every year.
• FIDE organised the first official Chess Olympiad in 1927 which took place in London. There were 15 participating nations in the 1^st Chess Olympiad. Another unofficial Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest, Hungary in 1926, while the second official Chess Olympiad was held in Netherlands in 1928. The world Chess Federation (FIDE) has since 1950, conducted the official Chess Olympiads once every two year.
• In the year 2022, World Chess Federation (FIDE) announces a new tradition of chess Olympiad Torch Relay. The First Torch relay commenced from New Delhi, India. Hon’ble Prime Minster of India, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the first ever Torch Relay of chess Olympiad on 19.6.2022. This will be regular feature in coming Olympiads and the Torch Relay will be commenced from India to reach host country of Chess Olympiads.
• 44^th International Chess Olympiad is being organised at Mahabalipuram (Chennai), India from 28^th July 2022 to 10^th August 2022. The event sees the participation of chess players from more than 180 countries, consisting of Super Grand Masters and the world Champions and the highest rated players. The event is one of the largest gathering of chess players and is expected to infuse passion and excitement in the minds of young Indians for this amazing sport.

• Women officers were commissioned in Indian Army as officers in Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Military Nursing Service since Indeendence and in Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps, Army Education Corps and Judge Advocate General Department since 1992 through Women Special Entry Scheme (WSES). After a 24 weeks training, they were commissioned for a period of five years. Short Service Commission (SSC) for men was in vogue since 1964 for all Arms and Services included a 49-week training after which they became eligible for a five year tenure extendable by another five years i.e. (5+5). Men could also opt for Permanent Commission after SSC, upon screening by Selection Boards. Such an option for Permanent Commission (PC) was not available to women officers under WSES.
• However, in 1996, the tenure of women officers was extended by five years and induction commenced in Corps of Engineers, Corps of Signals, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Intelligence Corps and Army Air Defence. In 2004, the tenure was further extended by another four years. Later in 2006, the terms and conditions of service of women officers were revised and the contract was made 10 years extendable by four years (10+4). WSES scheme was terminated and induction of women officers was commenced through SSCW (Tech) and SSCW (Non-Technical) with pre-commission training of 49 weeks and subsequent time scale promotions up to Lt Col at par with male Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOS).
• In 2008, Government of India approved PC for women officers in AEC and JAG which materialized in 2010, after which the women officers commissioned in balance eight Arms and Services sought PC at par with their male counterparts. On 15 Aug 2018, the Hon’ble PM announced that women officers would be eligible for consideration for grant of PC in the balance eight Arms and Services. A Govt Sanction Letter (GSL) was issued on 25 Feb 2019 for the purpose. This was followed by Hon’ble Supreme Court’s directions on 17 Feb 2020 for the same. On 16 Jul 2020, GSL was issued granting consideration for PC to women officers at par with their male counterparts. Accordingly, a Special Selection Board was held in Sept 2020 and it approved 422 out of 615 women officers for grant of PC. The Chief of Army Staff on 15 Jan 2021 further announced that women officers would be eligible to be commissioned in Army Aviation as Pilots.

• The International Association of Lions Clubs was founded in 1917 to bring succour to the poor and needy across the World. The organization’s motto is “WE SERVE” and slogan is Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety.
• The International Association of Lions Clubs is headquartered at Chicago, USA and there is an Area Office in Mumbai. The last 100 years have seen it grow to the strength of over 1.4 million volunteer members, serving through 46000 clubs in 210 countries across the world.
• The organization celebrated its Centennial in 2017 and, as a special Centennial Service Challenge, Lions Clubs International (LCI) has undertaken to serve 100 million people worldwide, 25 million each in the 4 key areas of Sight, Environment, Youth & Hunger.
• At the International Convention in 1925, the late Helen Keller – the champion of the Blind, gave Lions the vision to become the “Knights of the Blind” and since then Prevention & Eradication of Blindness has been the signature activity worldwide.
• LCI was invited to join in an advisory capacity on the committee drafting the United Nations Charter in 1945. Even today, LCI remains associated with UNESCO in an advisory capacity & LCI is the only NGO, whose International President has the opportunity to address the UN General Assembly on Lions Day each year.
• With the setting up of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) – the charitable arm of LCI on 13^th June 1968 – LCI opened up a new era in extending succour to communities and causes across the world. Till date, LCIF has awarded more than USD 901 million as grants worldwide – for restoring sight, supporting youth, disaster relief and other humanitarian issues.
• As a result of the transparency and accountability maintained by LCIF, its members are proud to have many of the world’s leading philanthropic trusts as partners in Service.
• The Lions movement came to India in 1956, with the formation of the first two clubs at Mumbai & Delhi. The movement has enjoyed steady growth over the years and today, in just over 60 years, India constitutes the second largest body of Lions in the world – with nearly 250000 members serving through 6400 clubs in every nook and corner of the country.
• Two Indians have already proudly served as International Presidents – in 1992-93 & 2005-06, and from July 2018 onwards, yet another Indian – Lion Naresh Aggarwal – will again be the International President – leading the organization into the next Century of its existence.
• Through LCIF, India has received, 1535 grants worth USD 83 million (Rs. 53.76 crore) for the causes related to disaster relief, restoring sight, supporting youth, and other Humanitarian causes. Of these, over 500 grants worth USD 3.7 million (Rs. 23 Crores) are for disaster relief alone.
• Lions have raised more than Rs. 22.8 crore (USD 3.57 million) to fund ‘Sight First’ programs in India. Over 236 Hospitals have been upgraded / set up in India with LCIF Grants. In the next three years, Lions will screen 25 lakh patients for vision disorders, perform nearly 100,000 cataract surgeries and treat over 20,000 people for other sight conditions.
• The Lions Quest program is a comprehensive youth development program for social and emotional learning, that promotes character education, drug awareness and service learning in a caring, safe, participatory learning environment, allowing students to develop 21^st Century life skills. To date, working in over 10 local languages, Lions have impacted over 1 million youth and trained 30,000 educators under this programme.
• LIONS are involved in every aspect of Social Welfare activities in the country and have made significant contributions in terms of financial investments, benefits to community and the people at large. Lions Clubs have established and run Hospitals & medical Centres, Schools, Orphanages, Institutions for the Specially Challenged, Old Age Homes, Blood Banks, Dialysis Centres etc.
• Lions Clubs International has also recently been chosen as one of the Brand Ambassadors for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of the Government of India.
• There is virtually no sphere of social service left untouched by this organization and the multifarious service activities are conducted pan India on a daily basis, benefiting lakhs of the poor & needy populace.

• Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is country’s leading defence R&D organization involved in design and development of indigenous defence systems for the Indian Armed Forces. The organization has contributed immensely in making India a self-sufficient and self-reliant country in defence equipment. DRDO’s product profile includes a varied range of defence platforms, system and weapon systems. DRDO has seven technology clusters viz. Aeronautical Systems, Armament and Combat Engineering Systems, Electronics and Communication Systems, Life Sciences, Micro Electronic Devices and Computational Systems, Missiles and Strategic Systems and Naval Systems and Materials. Weapon systems, platforms and dual use equipment developed by DRDO which can be valued to the tune of Rs. 1.6 lakh cr. are being inducted in our Armed Forces, Para-Military Forces and are transferred for civilian use.

With increased acceptability, credibility and visibility, the export potential of DRDO developed system has also increased.
