About : 

• Remount Veterinary Corps has been carrying on the great traditions of dedication, valour and sacrifice written on Indian battlefields since ancient times through animals trained for effective use in war tactics as Force Multipliers.
• Remount Veterinary Corps was raised in 1779 in Bengal, initially with the name “Stud Department”. It has witnessed many transformations over the years and was given the present name of the “Remount Veterinary Corps” in 1960 after Military Farms were separated from it as an independent Corps. The Corps is one of the oldest services of Indian Army and has a glorious past. It has distinguished itself by undertaking the arduous task of converting the strength of mute animals into a formidable force thus synchronizing the saga of Indian valour of yore with the finest tenets of modern day tactical warfare. The Corps Motto “PASHU SEVA ASMAKAM DHARMA” i.e. “SERVICE TO ANIMALS IS OUR DUTY” sums up the duties and role entrusted to it.
• The Remount Veterinary Corps is extensively involved in provisioning, scientific breeding, rearing, providing specialized training of horses, mules and dogs and their issue to Indian Army as Force Multipliers. Army dogs are trained in mine detection, explosive detection, guard/attack, infantry patrol, search and rescue and avalanche rescue operations. The Corps provides complete vet cover to these army animals and is also actively engaged in conduct of several high tech applied research projects in the field of veterinary science. Central Mil Vet Lab (CMVL) at Meerut Cantt has the rare distinction of being the country’s only NABL accredited vet lab with ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 Standards in the field of biological testing and advanced diagnostics.
• The unique saga of dedication, valour and sacrifice of RVC trained equines and canines alongwith their trainers is reflected in multifarious force multiplying roles played by these mute warriors in aid of army and paramilitary forces during war and peacetime ops. They have rendered invaluable assistance to civilian authorities in times of natural disasters & calamities such as assistance during Bhuj earthquake (26 Jan 2001), Tsunami (26 Dec 2004), J&K earthquake (08 Oct 2005) and Leh cloudburst (06 Aug 2010). These “silent warriors” have established themselves as “force multipliers” and have always remained in the forefront for guarding the nation’s interests. The Corps has actively participated in both World Wars and post independence, it has been integrally involved in the J&K Operations (1947-48); NEFA Operations (1962) and Indo-Pak wars of 1965 & 1971. RVC Units were actively involved in IPKF operations in Sri Lanka and played a crucial role in “Op Vijay” during Kargil war of 1999 in meeting the emergent operational requirements of animal transport in far flung posts.
• RVC Units have also been deeply involved in counter-insurgency ops in the ongoing Low Intensity Conflict Operations (LICO) in Northern and Eastern Command theatres. These RVC trained canines have proved their phenomenal capabilities in detecting explosives/IEDs, mines, tracking terrorists/saboteurs, guarding vital installations in hazardous climatic conditions and inhospitable terrain thus saving thousands of lives of soldiers/civilians and vital equipments.
• RVC has played a unique role in development of equestrian sports in IA. The recent silver medal winning team in equestrian eventing comprised three riders trained at AEN, RVC C&C of which two riders were from RVC which speaks volumes of its contributions.
• The Corps has also contributed significantly to India’s peace keeping efforts around the troubled parts of the Globe by being part of Indian Peace Keeping contingents under aegis of the United Nations. Presently the Corps is a part of three major UN Peace Keeping Missions viz. UNIFIL (Lebanon) and two missions in UNMISS (Sudan).
• The plethora of awards and honours garnered by the Corps are testimony to its high standards and excellence. The honours and awards include 1 Shaurya Chakra, 7 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 3 Sena Medals (Distinguished), 1 Param Vishisht Sewa Medal, 11 Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), 5 Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), 15 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), 25 Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), 1 Arjuna Award, 273 COAS Commendation Card (Army Dogs), 21 UN Force Commander’s Commendation.

• India has one of the oldest canine cultures. As early as the end of Mesolithic period the dog was domesticated and ever since the dog has been like a hunting companion rather than a show piece. Oriented to speed and action, Indian dogs are all outdoor dogs.
• The Indian sub-continent is the largest conglomeration of various breeds of dogs in the world. Through a long process of evolution, each geographical region in India has produced a distinctive breed, adapted to the local environment. While Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal have BHOTIAs, Kumaon Hills have SHIKARIs, RAMPUR HOUNDs abound the Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana etc. and MUDHOL Hounds are found in Koyana-Gulbarga of Karnataka and Maharashtra. The RAJAPALAYAMs come from Tamil Nadu and TRIPURIs are found in the Lushai Hills of Assam.
• Due to their usefulness and association with human habitat, dogs remain man’s best friends. Known for their sturdiness and loyalty, there is a need for creation of awareness about the variety of the canine population in India. The set of stamps depicts four Indian canine breeds viz. the Himalayan Sheep Dog, the Rampur Hound, the Mudhol Hound and the Rajapalayam.
• Himalayan Sheep Dog : 
  • Found in Ladakh and adjoining Nepal, they are strong and powerful dogs. Gentle and sensitive with humans, they are alert and have sharp reflexes. Courageous and ferocious, are excellent guard dogs for cattle. They are generally black or brown with patches of white on ears, legs and body. They have a thick course over coat and a thick smooth fur for under coat.
  • They have short legs and a long back. They have pointed muzzle and luminous dark rimmed eyes. Tail is plumed and up turned. Compact and muscular they can sustain the Indian heat.
• Rampur Hound :
  • The most well-known Indian breed, the Rampur Hounds are elegant dogs, featured in Mughal miniatures. These dogs come from Rampur of erstwhile Rohilkhand of Uttar Pradesh. These are medium sized, muscular, powerful built for great speed and endurance. They have long wide head, flat between ears, and powerful jaws with scissor bite. They have slightly oval, brown to dark amber eyes. They have long and tapering tail, and the body has short and firm coat.
  • Mostly brindle or mouse grey in colours, with its long legs and short coat, it has a streamlined back of a grey hound, with a long skull. It was used for hunting, and Jahangir’s kennel is said to have had 4000 of them.
  • Every year in a mela in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, the best hound exhibited is given the title Rustum-e-Rampur.
• Mudhol Hound :
  • Primarily a desert variety of gaze hounds is generally found scattered all over Maharashtra and has been mostly kept by tribals. The Raja of Mudhol, a princely state, now part of Karnataka, trained these dogs for hunting. The Raja of Kolhapur also patronised this breed. Quiet, aloof, placid and reserve, it hunts with extreme concentration equally well on dry and marshy lands.
  • It has characteristically long and lean head, with well chiselled jaws and nose slightly protruding beyond the teeth. It has bony and narrow body with long tail that tapes to the end. It has very light and effortlessly easy movement with strong driving action with matching reach. Mudhol is found in all colours except albino.
• Rajapalayam :
  • The Rajapalayam, built on the lines of the Great Dane, is an all-white dog, though at times mottled white is also noticed. The eyes are brown, and the pink nose is distinctive. With its button cars and whip tail, it has loose hanging upper lips and is deep chested. Never a fast runner but is tireless and steady over long distances. Traditionally used as sheep dog and for hunting, it has also figured in battles. It is said that in the 18^th century Pudukkottai regiment of Rajapalayam dogs was effectively used for fighting the enemies. Although a brave hound used more for hunting hare and other small game, it is gentle and is every one’s friend.

About : 

• Over the course of 50 years Louis Pasteur’s discoveries revolutionised chemistry, agriculture, industry, medicine, surgery and hygiene. These discoveries also greatly changed the human condition, and his brilliance and rigorous methods advanced both science and its techniques. In the work of Pasteur, each discovery is a link in an uninterrupted chain, from molecular asymmetry to the prevention of rabies via fermentation, silkworm, wine and beer diseases, sterilization and virus/vaccines.
• In 1847 he formulated a fundamental law: asymmetry differentiates the organic world from the mineral world; in other words, molecular asymmetry is the mark of life. His work became the basis of a new science – stereochemistry (or three-dimensional chemistry).
• In studying fermentation, he demonstrated that each sort of fermentation is linked to the existence of a specific micro-organism, cultivating it in an appropriate, sterile medium. This is the basis of microbiology.
• Pasteur negated the doctrine of spontaneous generation; he also developed a theory on germs. At the same time, his discovery of anaerobic life paved the way for the study of germs of septicaemia and gangrene among other infections. Thanks to Pasteur, it became possible to devise techniques to kill microbes and to control contamination. Pasteur demonstrated that wine diseases are caused by microorganisms which could be killed by heating the wine to 55°C. Applied to beer and milk, this process called “Pasteurization” soon came into worldwide use.
• Pasteur’s study of silkworm diseases led to the discovery of the infectious agents and revealed transmission of these diseases and how to prevent them, an elaboration on his study of fermentation. He was able to confirm that each disease has its microbe and that the microbes are foreign elements. He established the basic rules of sterilization (asepsis) which became critical for surgery and obstetrics.
• From 1877 to 1887, Pasteur employed these bases of microbiology in the battle against infectious diseases. He went on to discover successively staphylococcus, streptococcus and pneumococcus.
• He discovered the method for the attenuation of virulent micro-organisms and then developed vaccines against chicken pox, cholera, anthrax and swine erysipelas. On July 6, 1885, for the first time, he tested his pioneering rabies treatment on man; the young Joseph Meister was saved.
• On March 1, 1886 Pasteur presented his result to the Academy of Sciences and called for the creation of a rabies vaccine centre. A huge international public drive for funds financed the construction of the Institut Pasteur. In accordance with Pasteur’s wishes, the Institute was founded as a clinic for rabies treatment, a research centre for infectious disease and a teaching institution, Louis Pasteur was then 66 years old. He went on to dedicate the last 7 years of his life to the Institute. His work was pursued and amplified by his disciples, The Pasteuriens.
• Pasteur’s work is not simply the sum of his discoveries. It is also the revolution of scientific methodology. Pasteur had superimposed two indisputable rules of modern research; the freedom of creative imagination obligatorily subjected to rigorous experimentation. Louis Pasteur was also a humanist, his goal always being the amelioration of the human condition. He was a free man who never hesitated to take issue with the prevailing yet false ideas of his time.

• The Remount Veterinary Corps, one of the oldest services of the Indian Armed Forces, completed 215 years of long and distinguished service by 1994.
• Since its inception in 1779 as ‘Stud Department’ the Corps has undergone a series of organisational changes including the creation of the Army Veterinary Department in 1826 followed by the Horse Breeding Department in 1876. The Indian Army Veterinary Corps was raised in 1920 alongwith the establishment of two Army Veterinary Schools. With the partition in 1947, most of the horse breeding areas and Studs went to Pakistan, but the Corps responded with resilience and vigour to overcome the setback and make a new beginning. The Mil Vet Laboratory was shifted from Lahore to Lucknow, the Remount & Veterinary departments were amalgamated to form the Indian Remount Veterinary Corps (IRVC), and the RVC Centre & School, which imparts professional training to officers and men besides breeding, rearing and training of dogs, shifted to Meerut.
• The Corps has seen action during both the World Wars, and after Independence it took part in the J&K operations (1947-48), NEFA 1962 and in the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. Recently the Corps gave support to the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and is presently [i.e. by 1994] a part of the Indian contingent of UN Forces in Somalia. In recognition of its glorious contribution, the Corps was presented ‘Colours’ by the President of India on 21^st December ’89.
• Today, the Corps, which contributes to the logistic needs of the Armed Forces, is proud of its highly competent and well organised infrastructure in the equine and canine fields. The breeding of specialist horses for equestrian sports and training of dogs to meet the emerging security needs has, of late, acquired particular significance. In its pursuit of excellence and dedication to the motto ‘Service to animals is our Duty’ the Corps is constantly engaged in upgrading its professional capabilities and honing the skills and endurance of its officers and men.

• The American Kennel Club, headquartered in New York City, is an organization dedicated to the advancement of pure-bred dogs. It was founded on September 17, 1884, and is comprised of delegates from more than 400 autonomous dog clubs throughout the United States.
  
• The amateur sportsmen who founded the American Kennel Club in New York City 100 years ago established a uniform set of rules for dog sports. Each year, more than 8,000 competitive events are staged under these rules by individual breed clubs or all-breed organizations. They include dog shows, field trials and obedience trials.
  
• One of the primary functions of the AKC is to maintain a registry of recognized breeds. The Stud Book has the ancestral record of every dog registered with the organization since its inception – an enrollment of some 18 million animals.
  
• One of the oldest regular sporting events in the United States, held annually since 1877, is the dog show staged by the Westminster Kennel Club of New York. Hundreds of dogs are entered and judges select the best in each breed, the best in each of the six main dog groups and, finally, the best in the show.
  
• Among the most popular hounds listed in the book is the beagle, a miniature foxhound. The origin of the breed is lost in history, but it is known that the beagle was popular in 18^th century England and was subsequently imported to the United States. A National Beagle Club was formed in 1888.
  
• Classified as a non-sporting dog, the Boston terrier is a native American breed. A cross between a bulldog and an English terrier, it originated in Boston in about 1870. The dog has a brindled or black coat with snow white markings. Its gentle disposition makes it an ideal family companion.
  
• The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is another American dog whose stock came from England. It dates back to 1807, when two dogs were given to a Maryland gentleman who offered hospitality to sailors of a wrecked English ship. By 1885, a distinct breed had developed which became known for its exceptional skill in retrieving ducks from the rough, icy waters of Chesapeake Bay.
  
• The smallest of the sporting dogs, the cocker spaniel is both a helpmate to hunters and a lovable children’s pet. Despite its small size, the dog has great endurance and is capable of considerable speed. It has been exhibited in the United States since the 1880’s.
  
• The Alaskan malamute is judged under the category of working dogs. One of the oldest Arctic sled dogs, the breed was named for a tribe of Innuit Indians who settled in the upper western part of Alaska. Admiral Richard Byrd used Alaskan malamutes for his Antarctic expeditions.
  
• The collie is another working dog. A native of Scotland, where it was widely used as a shepherd dog, the collie was imported to America in colonial days. Its popularity has grown steadily since the 1880’s.
  
• Hounds comprise another major groups of dogs in America. During the 1700’s, many types of hounds, with widely different hunting characteristics, were brought to this country from Europe. From then, the American foxhound emerged, with features that have gradually been standardized. The dog is between 22 and 25 inches high and has a close, hard coat of medium length.
  
• A relative newcomer to the roster of hounds is the black and tan coonhound, which was admitted to the American Kennel Club registry in 1945. Selectively bred for proficiency in hunting possums and raccoons, the coonhound can also be used to hunt deer, mountain lions and bears. It trails its quarry entirely by scent.
