About :

  • Right from the Vedic times, India has enjoyed a rich spiritual tradition. The Indian scriptures, also cover a gamut of every human emotion and aspiration that have made a sublime contribution to Indian spiritualism. On account of this, India has always attained reverent place in the world.
  • India is not a piece of land but a mass of uplifting consciousness. In this majestic India, Paliyad, the pilgrimage place of faith of millions of devotees, is situated in the divine land of Gujarat. Paliyad is believed to be no less than Haridwar or any other place of pilgrimage.
  • Patamanbapu was childless after many years of marriage. He came across a yogic saint who was practising Sadhna in the caves of mountain Chandangiri. Looking at Patamanbapu’s selfless service and dedication towards spirituality, the Saint blessed him and promised him that Ramdev Peer himself will take birth as his child.
  • Visamanbapu was born in the Kathi clan of Paliyad village, Saurashtra on the 5th day of Maha Sud, 1825 (Gujarati Calendar). His father’s name was Shri Patamanbapu and mother’s name was Aai Ranbai Ma. Visamanbapu is hailed as the incarnation of Ramdev Peer himself. He was famous for his saint like qualities from the childhood. Visamanbapu had set off on the path of sainthood under the guidance of Shri Gorakhbapu of Songadh and Shri Daanbapu of Chalala. He was believed to have super powers and there are numerous tales of his miracles.
  • Even in the midst of tumultuous Kali Yuga, powered by devotion and his spiritual qualities, he overcame the plight of many kings, ranks, aristocrats and visitors. At the age of about sixty years on 11th day of Bhadarva Sud, 1885 (Gujarati Calendar), he handed over the throne of Paliyad, Thackeray to his nephew, Shri Laxmanbapu, son of Hada Boricha. In the 14th of Savant, Visamanbapu attained salvation.
  • Before his salvation, he instructed Laxmanbapu to serve the monks, saints and cows and to give a piece of bread to the visitor. These words of Visamanbapu later became the core philosophy and practise of Paliyad cult. After Visamanbapu, Laxmanbapu, Purna Thakar, Nirmalaba took his legacy forward. Later, Unadbapu worked against the vices of society like alcohol, gambling, carnivory and established a prominent tradition of spiritual and virtuous society.
  • Visamanbapu established Yatradham on the bank of river Goma, 15 km from Botad. Free meals are offered to every devote here. About 5000-6000 people visit Vihaldham, Paliyad every day. Also, the fair is held on the day of Amavasya (New Moon) and millions of devotees visit to the holy place to seek blessings of saints. A fully equipped food court has been set up at Paliyad to meet such an arrangement and to accommodate everyone in the pangat without any discrimination on the basis of caste and creed.
  • In modern times, the organisation has taken up a number of activities for the welfare of the people. These include, diagnosis camps and free treatment of patients, book aid to vulnerable students in society, financial support for further study of brilliant children, eye surgery, cowshed (gaushala) and ambulance facility.

Born on Aug 15, 1872 at Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Died on Dec 5, 1950 at Pondicherry, French India [now Puducherry City, Puducherry, India]

About :

  • In India, spirituality and religion are part of people’s everyday life. Since ancient times, the Rishis & Munis of India preferred to attain spiritual pursuits rather than materialistic pursuits of life. Hence, spiritual wisdom gained an upper hand over materialistic prosperity. Since ages, spiritual seekers from India have shown the world, the higher path of living.
  • Sri Aurobindo was born in Calcutta on 15th August 1872. At the age of seven he was sent to England for education. There he studied at St. Paul’s School, London, and at King’s College, Cambridge. After return to India in 1893, he worked for the next thirteen years in the Princely State of Baroda in the service of the Maharaja and as a professor in Baroda College. During this period, he also joined a revolutionary society and took a leading role in secret preparations for an uprising against the British Government in India.
  • In 1906, soon after the Partition of Bengal, Sri Aurobindo quit his post in Baroda and went to Calcutta, where he soon became one of the leaders of the Nationalist movement. He was the first political leader in India to openly put forward, in his newspaper Bande Mataram, the idea of complete Independence for the country. Prosecuted twice for sedition and once for conspiracy, he was released each time for lack of evidence.
  • Sri Aurobindo had begun the practice of Yoga in 1905 in Baroda. In 1910 he withdrew from politics and went to Pondicherry in order to devote himself entirely to his inner spiritual life and work. During his forty years in Pondicherry he evolved a new method of spiritual practice, which he called the Integral Yoga. According to Sri Aurobindo, spiritual realization not only liberates man’s consciousness but also transforms his nature. In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, the Mother, he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Among his many writings are The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri. Sri Aurobindo left for heavenly abode on 5th December 1950.
  • After the death of Sri Aurobindo, Sri Aurobindo Society was started by the Mother on 19th September 1960. She was not only the founder and the Executive President but also remains its guiding force. From a very small beginning, over the years, the Society has grown into an international organization working in diverse fields of life, like integral education, Indian culture, emergency response management and sustainable development.
  • Sri Aurobindo has been a scholar, a literary critic, a philosopher, a revolutionary, a poet, a yogi and a rishi. He was all these and much more and has touched the souls of millions in India and abroad. Sri Aurobindo has been an inspiration to all those who wants to make this world a better place by making improvements in their inner world.
  • India in its 75th Years of its Independence and as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations is commemorating the life of spiritual masters whose work and values resonates with the soul of India. Government of India has decided to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo in befitting manner at national and international level during the period from 15 August 2022 to 15 August 2023.

Name : Togan Nengminja Sangma

Born at Simsanggre (Williamnagar), East Garo Hills district, Meghalaya, India

Died on 12 Dec, 1872 at Chisobibra, Meghalaya, India

About :

  • The Garo Hills is predominantly inhabited by the Garos, belonging to the Tibeto-Burman race. The Garos call themselves as Achiks and the land they inhabit as the Achikland.
  • From time immemorial, the Garos had been living as an independent tribe in the present day Garo Hills of Meghalaya. Togan N. Sangma was born at Samanda Village of present East Garo Hills District.
  • When Togan was at the prime of his life, the British had already occupied major portion of Garo Hills which were created into a District by passing the Garo Hill District Act 1869. However, there were more than sixty Garo villages of the most interior parts of Garo Hills which were still independent including Togan’s and his co-leader Gilsang Dalbot Sangma’s villages of Samanda and DalbotKalkagre respectively.
  • An opportune moment was created by Togan and Gilsang and other independent Nokmas who took revenge on those villages which submitted to the British Authority. Another event that followed was that a Khalasi who accompanied the British Survey Party led by Major Godwin Austen was killed in 1871 by the independent Garos. This was taken by the British as a challenge to their authority. Therefore, in order to bring order, the British Government decided to annex the entire Garo villages. Togan, Gilsang and other Nokmas vowed to offer resistance even at the risk of their lives.
  • In the battle of Chisobibra, the independent Garos made a wild charge on the British camp. Despite being ill-equipped, he came up with the idea of using huge shields made of plantain stems that could stop bullets from hitting the Garo warriors. He fell fighting with unmatched heroism and courage in December, 1872.
  • Pa Togan Sangma is immortalised at the martyr’s column in Shillong, where his name is enshrined along with U Tirot Singh and U Kiang Nongbah, the gallant heroes of the Khasis and Jaintias.
  • To commemorate the valor and courage of this great warrior of Meghalaya, the State Government instituted, Pa Togan Sangma State Awards for the best Social Services. Also every year, 12th December, Death Anniversary of Pa Togan Sangma is celebrated as State holiday.

About :

  • Medical education took its nascent steps in North East India with the establishment of Berry White School of Medicine, Dibrugarh in 1900. Dr John Berry White was a great philanthropist who left his will, donating his entire life savings of Rs 50,000 towards the institution which produced LMP (Licentiate Medical Practitioner) doctors until before India gained independence.
  • When the need of having a full-fledged medical college arose in Assam after independence, the seed sown by John Berry White ensured that Dibrugarh had the first claim to the effect. Public meetings were held and citizen groups constituted to rally for a medical college in Dibrugarh.
  • Assam Medical College, as we know today started functioning from the abandoned military base hospital of US army in the 2nd World War in the Barbari area of Dibrugarh. First batch of MBBS in the year 1947 had 57 students.
  • The pioneers who were instrumental in the establishment of Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh were Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Chief Minister, Ram Nath Das, Health Minister, Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah and others. Dr Hem Chandra Baruah was the founder principal of the college.
  • At present Assam Medical College boasts of an annual intake of 200 MBBS seats and 217 Post graduate seats. Till date 9,172 MBBS graduates have qualified from its portals, are flying the flag of their alma mater high, shining in patient care, research as well as extra-curricular activities.
  • The college has 28 full-fledged departments, which includes 8 (eight) super speciality departments. Whereas post graduate courses were recognized by the then MCI during the 1960s itself, the NMC has also given the green signal to DM and MCh courses in 3 (three) super speciality departments during this platinum jubilee year of the institute.
  • 28th April 2022 was a red letter day in the annals of Assam Medical College, with the visit of honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. It witnessed the dawn of a new beginning in cancer care with the inauguration of the state of the art cancer hospital within the premises of the college.
  • Assam Medical College has always had a very strong research foundation. It was the pioneer in establishing the model rural health research unit (MRHRU) and multidisciplinary research unit (MRU). These projects have given the much needed impetus to both community based and laboratory based research work.
  • The college has 345 faculty in its rolls. About 375 nursing staff, 300 grade 3 and 500 grade 4 employees act as support system for various medical services offered by the college. The average daily outdoor attendance is 1,239 and the total indoor bed capacity is 1,365. It is the nodal centre for many national health programs, referral centre for more than 5 upper Assam districts as well as nearby states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Essentially, it provides universal health coverage to greater part of north eastern India.
  • There are many allied institutes within its campus of the college, offering degree, diploma and certificate courses. Some of these are in Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing (BSc, GNM, ANM) and Paramedical sciences.
  • Assam Medical College being a residential campus, provides for accommodation of both boys and girls. There are 11 undergraduate hostels and 6 post graduate hostels with in-house kitchen and dining facilities.
  • Assam Medical College has produced innumerable gems who have gone on to become stalwarts in their fields of expertise. As it steps into the platinum jubilee of fruitful existence, it will continue to be a beacon of hope and care throughout the whole world.

About :

  • INTERPOL (The International Criminal Police Organization) is the world’s largest international police organization and an inter-governmental organization with 195 member countries. Headquartered in Lyon, France, INTERPOL was founded in 1923 as the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC); the name INTERPOL served as the agency’s telegraphic address in 1946, and was chosen as its common name in 1956.
  • Globally, the increasing frequency of crimes with transnational linkages requires closer coordination among law enforcement agencies. There is a daily inflow and outflow of communications between National Central Bureaux of member countries which ranges from a compassionate request to locate and notify the next-of-kin of deceased; request to search for a missing person; criminal history requests; requests from law enforcement agencies for informal assistance in cases of fraud, commercial crime, trafficking in narcotics drugs, and criminal code offences.
  • Member countries of INTERPOL promote the widest possible assistance between all criminal police authorities in the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crimes. Its role is to enable police around the world to work together to make the world a safer place. Its high-tech infrastructure of technical and operational support helps meet the growing challenges of fighting crime in the 21st century. INTERPOL works to ensure that police around the world have access to the tools and services necessary to do their jobs effectively.
  • INTERPOL provides targeted training, expert investigative support, relevant data and secure communication channels. It also provides its member countries with instant, direct access to a wide range of criminal databases, containing millions of records on fingerprints, DNA, stolen motor vehicles, firearms, stolen and lost travel documents and more.
  • The General Assembly is INTERPOL’s supreme governing body, comprising of representatives from each of 195 member countries. It meets once a year. Each member country may be represented by one or several delegates who are typically Ministers, Chiefs of Police, Heads of INTERPOL NCBx and senior ministry officials. Its purpose is to ensure that INTERPOL’s activities correspond to the needs of member countries.
  • The General Assembly reviews and approves the programme of activities and financial policy for the coming year. In addition, the General Assembly elects the members of the Executive Committee, the governing body which provides guidance and direction in between sessions of the Assembly. The General Assembly takes decisions in the form of Resolutions. Each member country has one vote. The decision-making process is either by a simple or two-thirds majority, depending on the subject matter.
  • India is one of the oldest members of Interpol, having joined the organization in 1949. The Central Bureau of Investigation is designated as the National Central Bureau of India for INTERPOL. The Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation is the ex-officio Head of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau-New Delhi.
  • India is an active member and has earlier hosted an Inter-Regional Meeting of Heads of Drug Services in 1988, the first Interpol Conference on Methaqualone in 1992, the 13th Asian Regional Conference in 1994, the 66th General Assembly Session of ICPO-Interpol in 1997 and the Sixth Global Focal Point Conference on Asset Recovery in 2015.
  • India hosted the 90th General Assembly of INTERPOL from 18th-21st October, 2022 at Pragati Maidan Venue, New Delhi, culminating with celebrations for 75th year of India’s independence. The INTERPOL Flag was handed over to India on 25th November, 2021 during 89th INTERPOL General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • To mark the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Interpol in Vienna, the annual General Assembly of the organization will take place in Vienna in 2023.

About :

  • Jainism is one of the ancient religions of India, and is an integral part of Indian culture. Jainism teaches that the path to enlightenment is through nonviolence and reducing harm to living things (including plants and animals) as much as possible.
  • Life of Vijay Vallabh Surishwer is an example of humanism and spiritualism. He was born at Vadodara on 26 October, 1870 to Deepachand Icchabai. In search of peace and salvation of soul, he studied under his holiness Jain Acharya Shree Vijayanand Suriji, popularly known as Guru Atmaramji, a highly venerated Saint and a profound scholar of Jainism. Chhagan (his childhood name) entered monkhood, renouncing worldly life in 1887 at Radhanpur (Gujarat). He was christened as Muni Vallabh Vijay.
  • Guru Atmaramji taught Vijay Vallabh, the Jain philosophy propounded by Lord Mahavir viz Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekant (non-absolutism), Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). Vijay Vallabh also mastered study of contemporary religions. His Guru ordained Vijay Vallabh to set up, not only places of worship, but also educational institutions and service centres which would help both men and women to understand religion in its true perspective.
  • True to his Guru, Vijay Vallabh worked for the welfare of the society irrespective of caste, class and creed. He initiated various programmes to eradicate ignorance, superstition and illiteracy. His humane approach, scientific outlook and practical life endeared him to the masses. He was bestowed with Acharyaship in 1924 at Lahore (now in Pakistan).
  • He placed before the mankind, both by precept and practice, the highest moral and spiritual values of life. He widely traveled barefooted as enjoined on Jain Monks, many times all-over Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Rajasthan, U.P., M.P., Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir to spread this message.
  • This visionary Saint, realizing the prime needs of the society emphasized on giving moral and righteous education to improve standard of life. He laid special emphasis on the education of women. He motivated the society to establish a large number of schools, colleges, gurukuls, libraries and centres of craft and learning in many parts of the country. Opening of Shri Mahavira Jain Vidyalay at Mumbai as far back as 1915 and its subsequent branches, Shri Atmanand Jain Gurukul at Gujranwala and Shri Atmanand Jain College at Ambala are just but a few of the glorious examples.
  • Vijay Vallabh was an exponent of research work. He became instrumental in collecting and preserving thousands of volumes of priceless handwritten manuscripts and published works on Indology at Shri Mahavira Jain Vidyalaya, Mumbai and Jain Gurukul Gujranwala and other libraries as valuable storehouse of knowledge and cultural heritage. He advised to marshal the existing knowledge within the framework of modern research.
  • Vijay Vallabh aroused people from slumber wherever he went during the freedom movement. Identifying himself with the freedom struggle, he wore khadi throughout his life. He was a patriot to the core. Swadeshi found an echo in his speeches.
  • Vijay Vallabh strongly deprecated display of wealth and extravagance on social occasions, dowry and such other evils. Though born in Gujarat, he always promoted Hindi as national language. He was a renowned orator, author and poet. In addition to several works in prose, he wrote about 4000 poems, songs and hymns in Hindi, rich both in language and content.
  • Vijay Vallabh came into contact with great patriots of the nation like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Motilal Nehru, Shri Morarji Desai, Lala Lajpat Rai, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and other stalwarts of the freedom movement and luminaries of pre and post independence era. He supported Satyagraha and non-cooperation as potent yet non-violent tools to achieve independence. His formula for World peace was highly appreciated by Shri Morarji Desai and the then Prime Minister Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru.
  • For the all round development of the society, he had, in fact, made Shiksha (education), Seva (service), Sangathan (unity), Sahitya (literature) and Swavlamban (self-reliance) as his creed and mission of life.
  • Vijay Vallabh breathed his last at Mumbai in September 1954 where a Samadhi Mandir has been built in Byculla. A multifaceted grand memorial was later constructed at Delhi comprising of a Jain Temple, Guru Mandir, Research Institute, School, Museum of Jain Art, Birds Hospital and matching infrastructure, which apart from being a sacred devotional centre also works for taking Guru Vallabh’s Mission further.

About :

  • India Post, a network of 1.59 lakh post offices, spread across the length and breadth of India, is mandated to provide doorstep mail delivery to every Indian. Locating 25 crore households in an area of 32.87 lakh sq. km makes this task both challenging and exciting. It requires professional mail management and a scientific system to ensure timely deliver of mail.
  • In the absence of Pincode, considerable time was being consumed in collecting, sorting, transporting and delivering of the postal articles. Reading an address was a time consuming process and the sorter had to memorize a very large number of sorting patterns to route the mail to the proper destination.
  • The PIN (Postal Index Number) was introduced in India on August 15, 1972. It is a 6 digit code of Post Office numbering used by India Post. Each digit in the 6-digit number has a specific meaning. The first digit from left designates which is the overall geographical region, and the first 2 digits designate the postal circle or sub-region. The third digit designates the sorting district. Thus the first 3 digits collectively designate the postal district while the last 3 digits indicate the specific post office within the district. Entire country is divided into 9 PIN regions in the country.
  • Each Pincode is mapped to one delivery post office which receives all the mail to be delivered to one or lower offices within its jurisdiction, all of which share the same code. The delivery office can either be a General Post Office (GPO), or a head office (HO), or a sub-office (SO) which are usually located in urban areas. The post from the delivery office is sorted and routed to other delivery offices for a different PIN or to one of the relevant sub-offices or branch offices for the same PIN.
  • PIN Code ensures speedy and accurate processing of mail. While many of the small places may not be known to the officials who sort the mail, the Pincode helps in identifying immediately the correct routing for such mail and helps in ensuring a fast and reliable sorting and delivery. The Pincode has also simplified the sorting system for bulk mail users. In long distance transmission of mail, it cuts down the time of sorting by giving broad indications, firstly of the routing and thereafter of the details of the sorting.
  • Pincode simplify the delivery of mail by finishing confusion over incorrect addresses, similar place names, and different languages used by the public. Use of Pincode on mail articles and parcels ensure timely delivery even in the remotest parts of the country.
  • To make citizens aware about their Pincode, the department has created an online Pincode finder tool. Available on India Post website, this tool helps the users to locate the Pincode for a locality and vice versa. Users can search the Pincode of their area either by providing locality, State, and District Details or by entering Post Office Name.
  • Department of Posts has computerised and mechanised the entire process of mail delivery in India. The department now uses more sophisticated ways of sorting out the mail through computers. Pincode is also essential for sorting of mail through automated machines.
  • With the emergence of Digital Systems, the relevance and use of Pincode has extended to other government departments and private sector. MICR code being used by banks is based on the Pincode system. The cowin.gov.in platform developed for COVID vaccination has also adopted the mechanism of Pincode for booking of vaccination slots by the general public. Anyone can book the nearby vaccination centre by using the Pincode of the particular area.
  • Pincode is a national asset contributing to economic development. It provides readymade national geographical classification system. Businesses can plan their internal systems of sales and distribution according to the Pincode geographical classification.

Name : Ramachandra Kundgolkar Saunshi

Born on Jan 19, 1886 at Amminbhavi, Dharwad, Karnataka, India

Died on Sep 12, 1952

About :

  • Pandit Rambhau Kundgolkar, popularly known as Sawai Gandharva was born in Amminbhavi, a small village in Dharwad district of Karnataka on 18-1-1886. He lost his mother Smt. Saraswatibai when he was just 3 months old. Saraswatibai’s elder sister, Smt. Tulasakka took infant Ramachandra under her care and nursed him.
  • At the age of 10 years, young Ramachandra happened to meet Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, the Pioneer of Kirana Gharana school of Hindustani classical music at Shrimant Ranganagouda Nadgir’s Palatial house at Kundgol in Dharwad district. The Ustad listened to young Ramachandra’s voice and is said to have exclaimed “Gala accha hai” meaning “voice is good”. Shrimant Ranganagouda Nadgir requested the Ustad to teach Classical music to young Ramachandra. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan accepted the request and rigorously trained Ramachandra for the next 10 years.
  • After this training, Pt. Rambhau Kundgolkar toured and performed all over India and spread the sweetness of the Kirana Gharana school of music. He also set up his own drama company but, unfortunately, he was forced to shut it down due to heavy losses.
  • He once again returned to classical singing, but with a new vigour. His voice was very melodious, that combined with his rigorous training and mastery over voice control, he soon became very popular and was held in high regard. His singing career spanned almost half a century.
  • He performed before the Maharaja of Mysore Krishnaraja Wodeyar Nizam of Hyderabad, the Maharajas of Sangli, Kolhapur and Aundh etc., all of whom were impressed with his renderings and held him in high esteem.
  • In the year 1924, AICC meeting was held in Belgaum where Mahatma Gandhi was the President. Pt. Sawai Gandharva performed there and Gandhiji, impressed with the singing, honoured Panditji with khadi garland.
  • In 1929, the electrification of the main line between Mumbai and Pune was inaugurated by Sir Frederic Sykes, Governor of Bombay. The Governor had sent a special invitation to Pt Sawai Gandharva to perform before distinguished guests in Pune. The Governor was very happy to listen to Hindustani Classical music and honoured Pt Sawai Gandharva with a silver plate full of Victorian coins and exclaimed “What a great music, I have never listened to such divine music. Panditji did not allow me to change my posture for three hours and I got completely immersed in the music which is nothing but heavenly”.
  • Pt. Sawai Gandharva was invited for the singing by the Secretary of Vijayanagar Empire Sixth Century Association. The luminaries present in the programme included the Maharaja of Mysore, Jnanpith awardee Dr. D R Bendre, Dr. V K Gokak, great historian Alur Venkatarao and others. Panditji’s singing was responded to by a standing ovation.
  • Prince Dadasaheb Khaparde, Head of Varhad state bestowed the title of Sawai Gandharva upon Panditji.
  • In 1946, Bharat Ratna Pt Bhimsen Joshi arranged ‘Ganda Bandhan’ ceremony by his guru Pt Sawai Gandharva at Railway’s North Institute of the Madras Southern Maratha Railway at Hubli in Karnataka. On this occasion, inspite of ill health, Pt Sawai Gandharva rendered Rag Jayajayawanti and Marathi abhangs.
  • Pandit Sawai Gandharva’s disciples include, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Bharat Ratna Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Padma Bhushan Dr. Basavraj Rajguru, Padma Shri Feroze Dastur, Shrimant Nanasaheb Nadgir and Dr. Nanasaheb Deshpande.
  • The essence of the music of Sawai Gandharva was emotion and intellect. He never displayed virtuosity for his own sake, but concentrated on the spirit of his Ragas. His ‘Asthaiji’ revealed a leisurely pace and meticulous unfolding of musical notes. The quite unhurried progression punctuated by soft swara-alap and the gradual exploration of the different dimensions of the Raga framework was the hallmark of his performance. This made his repertoire pleasing and at the same time subtle to the listening ears. Sawai Gandharva Rambhau Kundgolkar breathed his last on 12th September 1951 at Pune.
