• The Year 2021 marks the 50^th Anniversary of the victory of the Indian Armed Forces during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. As a mark of tribute and celebration of the victory, the period December 2020-2021 is being observed as Swarnim Vijay Varsh by the Indian Armed Forces.
• 16 December, the day of the surrender of Pakistani forces, is celebrated as Vijay Diwas each year. This day witnessed the conclusion of the War with the Indian Armed Forces gaining a decisive victory over Pakistan. Pakistani forces in East Pakistan under the leadership of Lieutenant General AAK Niazi, surrendering to the Indian Armed forces, led by Lt Gen JS Aurora, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command. Also present during the Surrender Ceremony were Vice Admiral N Krishnan, FOC-in-C, Eastern Naval Command and Air Marshal HC Dewan, AOC-in-C, Eastern Air Command.
• The 1971 Indo-Pak war commenced with Pakistan launching pre-emptive strikes on a large number of IAF bases. A swift response to these unprovoked attacks was launched by the Indian Armed Forces on the Western and Eastern Fronts, on Land, Sea and Air. Offensive action by the Indian Armed Forces led to the capture of Dhaka in East Pakistan, surrender of 93000 Pakistani soldiers and the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation. This was the largest surrender of Armed Forces post World War II. The historic victory of 1971 was achieved through the valour, gallantry and professionalism of the Commanders and Troops. It was a result of meticulous planning, dynamic leadership and innovation at multiple echelons. The stamp is symbolic of the resilience and tenacity of Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen, who were motivated by their leaders and convinced by the righteousness of their cause. As for the enemy, it had no way but surrender.
• The defining characteristic of the war was the jointness and integration achieved among the three arms of India’s Defence Forces. This, more than anything else, resulted in the success of the lightning campaign leading to the liberation of Bangladesh.
• The stamp commemorates the iconic event in the history of Indian Subcontinent. As its centerpiece, it carries the Swarnim Vijay Varsh logo, designed by Lt Cdr Kushal Chandrashekhar of the Indian Navy, which was selected during an All India Competition held in Oct-Nov 2020. The stamp also commemorates the espirit-de-corps and spirit of jointmanship displayed by the Indian Armed Forces as well as the Indo-Bangla Forces.
• With the launch of the Swarnim Vijay Varsh Stamp, India celebrates the professionalism and valour of its Armed Forces and reaffirms its commitment to its old friend and close neighbor, Bangladesh.

• The history of S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack dates back to the Maratha rule when a first-aid centre was started at the current location to treat sick pilgrims enroute to Puri & back during the famous Car Festival (Ratha Yatra) of Lord Jagannath.
• In 1875, the Odisha Medical School was born under the tutelage of the British which subsequently became the Odisha Medical College in 1944. It was renamed as Sri Rama Chandra Bhanja Medical College in 1951 to honour the Maharaja of the then princely state of Mayurbhanj for his handsome financial contribution of Rupees One lakh and thirty thousand, a huge amount during those times. The first batch of 22 MBBS students joined in 1944 and passed in 1948, and MCI recognised the course in 1952 with retrospective effect. Post graduate courses, MD/MS was started in 1960 and post-doctoral training in Cardiology and Neurosurgery from 1981. Since then many disciplines have started post-doctoral courses. Very few medical colleges in the country can boast of this long tradition and history.
• The institute stands tall among the medical colleges of the country as an outstanding example of excellence in training and patient care. Nearly 2000 trained man-power emerge from the institute annually and thousands have spanned out to different corners of the country and the world over 10 decades of its existence. It has been recognised by the then MCI as an ideal institution facilitating education and training in under-graduate, post-graduate and super-speciality subjects. Many doctors from this institution are luminaries in their respective fields. S.C.B. is a saga of brilliance in multiple fields and growing by leaps and bounds.
• It has a sprawling campus of 87 acres which accommodates the medical college and hospital, the dental college, the nursing college, pharmacy wing, and the DMLT wing. It has a large academic complex that includes state-of-the-art lecture theatres, library, and auditorium besides multiple hostels for the students.
• The services provided to the patients at no cost are unbelievable. It has a bed capacity of 2200, and the mega expansion plan in the offing will increase it to a staggering 5000 beds. The new complex is expected to be completed by early part of 2024 with a budget provision of 3500 crores. It is being constructed under the supervision of the government of Odisha and it will be state-of-the-art in all domains that few medical colleges in the world can boast having a world class health care facility.
• There are some outstanding stand-alone services and Departments that very few medical colleges in the country can match. The Telemedicine Resource Centre in unique. It has started in 2001 with the help of ISRO and SGPGL, Lucknow. It has been catering to the needs of thousands of patients across the state, training doctors in the peripheral service and providing on-line classes to the students during the pandemic.
• Research has been a growing priority of the institute. Many departments are involved in collaborative research with other national centres. There are multiple extra-mural projects supported by national funding agencies like ICMR, DBT and DST. Excellent research facilities like the MRU (Multi-disciplinary research unit) and VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory), funded by the central government, have been facilitating quality research.
• The Alumni Association of the Institute boasts of an outstanding galaxy of celebrity alumni who are luminaries in many disciplines across the world. Many have received accolades like Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Dr B C Roy award and Samanta Chandra Sekhar award for their outstanding contribution in the field of medical science. • The COVID pandemic was a challenge that the institution accepted. The institution has created 4 dedicated, 600 bedded COVID Units, within the premises, with dedicated facilities for dialysis, OT for surgery, Paediatric unit and an Obstetrics and Gynaecology wing for pregnant mothers and 140 ICU beds. Over 10,000 patients have been treated since its inception.
• The recent installation of 9 ECMO units by the government at S.C.B. Medical College has been a historic step. It is the largest ECMO facility in Eastern India and perhaps in the country in a Govt. hospital. Care is provided to the patients free of cost. Critical COVID-19 patients needing ECMO support, who were being air-lifted to other centres in the country, have availed this facility in this institute.

• Dattopant Thengadi was born on 10^th November, 1920 on the day of Diwali in Arvi Nagar, Wardha district, Maharashtra. His full name was Dattatreya Bapurao Thengadi but he became famous by the name of Dattopant. His father Bapurao Dajiba Thengadi was an eminent advocate. Dattopant Thengadi had his early education in Arvi Nagar.
• In the year 1931-32, while the freedom movement was going on under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Dattopant Thengadi was a student of class VI & VII and at this early age, he had started sharing his organizing skills. He had formed the Vanar Sena, Jhuggi Jhopdi Mandal and the Arvi Vidyarthi Sangh and participated in the movement.
• Dattopant took advanced education in Nagpur and after earning the L.L.B. degree, he decided to be a pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh and remained engaged in social service for his lifetime. After serving as a Pracharak in Kerala from 1942 to 1944 and then in Bengal till 1948, he came back to Nagpur where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1949. He was the Sangathan Mantri of Bharatiya Jana Sangh of Madhya Pradesh in 1951-53 and Dakshinanchal in 1956-57. He served as the Sangathan Mantri of Madhya Pradesh INTUC Labour Union in 1950-51 which enriched his experience of the labour sector.
• Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh was founded by him on 23^rd July, 1955. The aim of its establishment was to set up a labour organization that would work in the interest of the nation, industry and workers on the principle ‘of the workers, by the workers and for the workers’. The organization is considered as the largest labour organization in the country today.
• Dattopant Thengadi was an organizer and philosopher. He was a litterateur and accomplished author who wrote more than one hundred books and prologues of books. His book ‘Sanket Rekha’ and ‘Third Way’ (third option) books were discussed all over the world. He used to deliver meaningful lectures on literature, culture, history, science, politics, contemporary global activities, economic and social subjects. He had a keen grasp of Marathi, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada and English languages.
• He established ‘Bharatiya Kisan Sangh’ on 4^th March, 1979. He also established ‘Swadeshi Jagran Manch’, ‘Samajik Samrasta Manch’ and ‘Sarvapanth Samadar Manch’ on 22^nd November, 1991, 14^th April, 1983 and 14^th April, 1991 respectively. He played a crucial role in the establishment of the Environment Forum and organizations such as All India Advocates Council, Sahkar Bharti, Pragya Bharti and All India Consumer Panchayat.
• He served as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from 1964 to 1976. He breathed his last on 14^th October, 2004 at Pune.

• The Deccan College, Postgraduate and Research Institute, Pune is the third oldest Educational Institute in India. The Hindoo College was founded on 6^th October, 1821 by the then Bombay Presidency Government at the initiative of its Governor, Mount Stuart Elphinstone by using the Dakshina Fund, which was started by Khanderao Dabhade, a Maratha Sardar and continued by the Peshwas for propagating Sanskrit studies. This College grew from strength to strength and has emerged as one of the foremost Institutes of higher learning and research in the world. It was renamed as the Poona College on 7^th June, 1851 and later as the Deccan College in October 1864.
• The Deccan College was shifted to a new campus covering an area of 115 acres near Yerawada on 23^rd March 1868. With the help of a munificent grant of Rs. 1 lakh donated by Sir Jamsetji Jeejeebhoy, the main building of the College was built in a beautiful Gothic style. The Deccan College, since then, has produced a number of students who rose to positions of excellence in various walks of life. They include Sir Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, the celebrated Indologist, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the great nationalist leader, Gurudev Ramchandra Dattratraya Ranade, the eminent philosopher, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, the great social reformer, Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade, the famous historian, Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis, the famous Indian medical practitioner who also rendered his services in China.
• The College was closed down by the British Government in 1934, but it was reopened on 17^th August 1939 as Deccan College, Postgraduate and Research Institute.
• In the next half-century, the Institute carried out outstanding research in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Linguistics, Medieval and Maratha History, Sociology, Anthropology and Sanskrit studies. Eminent scholars such as the late Professors S. M. Katre, H. D. Sankalia, Irawati Karve, C. R. Sankaran, T. S. Shejwalkar, and their colleagues and successors such as Professors A. M. Ghatage, M. A. Mehendale, S. B. Deo, M. K. Dhavalikar, made the first-rate teaching and research contributions. On account of these contributions, the University has achieved a pre-eminent status not only in India but also outside the country. In recognition of the excellence achieved by the Institute both in teaching and research, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, awarded it the status of a Deemed University in 1990.
• The Department of Sanskrit and Lexicography is only of its kind in the country which combines both the branches of Sanskrit and Lexicography. The Encyclopedic Sanskrit Dictionary Project based on Historical Principles forms on integral part of this Department. It has a huge scriptorium housing more than 10 million references extracted from the entire gamut of Sanskrit literature. The Department of Archaeology is unique in the world as it has faculty dealing with different aspects of cultural heritage and scientific archaeology and is considered the second best in the world in terms of archaeological infrastructure and research output, next only to the Institute of Archaeology, London.
• Recently, the University has taken up several steps to extend its academic activities to reach to the general public. The Department of Archaeology conducted certificate courses in Ancient Maharashtra and Ancient Indian thoughts. The Department of Linguistics conducted short term courses in Computational Linguistics and practical course in Phonetics for corporate language trainer and school teachers of English.

• Mallappa Dhanshetti (1898-1931)
  • Mallappa Dhanshetti was born in 1898. His ability to turn the stick was commendable. Dhanshetti was instrumental in bringing the common people of Solapur to the forefront of the freedom struggle. He was the first to be honoured in the procession of sticks set out during the fair of Shri Siddharmeshwar, it was an inspiration to the Shraddhananda community, Ganeshotsav and processions of Ganpati immersion. Rathyatra taken out by Shubhrai Math on Mahaekadashi saw his active participation in carrying them out peacefully and smoothly.
• Jagannath Shinde (1906-1931)
  • Jagannath Shinde was a person with an indomitable will for independence, perseverance, confidence, fearlessness and zeal for accomplishment. He was born in 1906. He was mainly working in the Railway and Mill Workers Union. He was at the forefront of the labour movement. He worked hard to get more scholarships for the education of poor Maratha children. He had also participated in the Satyashodhak Parishad held in Mumbai.
• Abdul Rasul Kurban Hussain (1910-1931)
  • Abdul Rasul Kurban Hussain was born into a family of frame makers. Lokmanya Tilak and Mahatma Gandhi were his inspiration. He was committed to the five principles: freedom, swadeshi, equality, socialism and Hindu-Muslim unity. He participated in rallies, marches and processions under the leadership of Dr. K. V. Antrolikars, his zeal for Hindu-Muslim unity was evident in his writings and speeches. Abdul Rasul Kurban Hussain was an iconic symbol of how a patriotic Muslim should be.
• Shrikisan Sarada (1893-1931)
  • Shrikisan Sarada was a proud public figure, a person who generously helped in religious activities. He was born in 1893. His grandfather Govindrao Sarada came to Solapur for trade and settled there. On May 4, 1930, the British government arrested Mahatma Gandhi from Surat and he was sent to Yerawada Jail in Pune. As soon as the news of Gandhiji’s arrest was reported in the newspapers on May 5, the people staged a strike, a procession and a public meeting to protest against the government. On May 7, 18,000 mill workers went on strike. The people of Solapur staged a huge protest procession.
• As the procession approached the Bali gate, a crowd in the procession went to the Rupabhavani temple. There they peacefully cut down shindi trees and symbolically protested against the British government. At that time, the British police inhumanely beat eight members of the crowd and threw them into a police vehicle. Collector Knight and D.S.P. Flair got there. Collector Knight pulled out a pistol and go out of the car. As soon as Mallappa Dhanshetti realized this, he rushed there and calmed the crowd for a while and saved their lives. A request to release the eight people who were arrested by the police at that time was raised.
• While the discussion was going on, Shankar Shivdare, an 18 years old boy, approached the Collector with a tricolor flag in his hand. He was shot dead by a sergeant near the Collector. The crowd dispersed. The frightened Collector Knight picked up the names of the eight and released them. However, three more people were killed in the indiscriminate firing by the police and the crowd dispersed and marched on the nearby Peth police station on Tuesday. The police post was set on fire.
• Mallappa Dhanshetti, outraged by the conservative remarks about the citizens, ran over the Collector and grabbed a chair to kill him. So Collector Knight was holding a duke on them. As Shrikisan Sarada, a friend of Mallappa Dhanshetti, was financing the freedom movement, Collector Knight was furious with Sarada. All the youths were behind Jagannath Shinde who was a great organizer. Shinde’s involvement in the freedom movement was very much in the eyes of Collector Knight. Abdul Rasul Kurban Hussain was using the labour movement to fight for independence. Hindu-Muslim unity was being brought about through his weekly ‘Gajanfar’. The leases of the British monarchy were being removed. That is why Abdul Rasul Kurban Hussain was on the radar of Collector Knight. He planned to teach all four of them a lesson.
• Collector Knight deliberately fabricated evidence against Dhanshetti, Shinde, Sarada and Kurban Hussain in connection with the deaths of two policemen in an unidentified mob attack. Twelve false witnesses stood. During the trial, Judge Wadia did not allow the accused party to cross-examine the witnesses and did not allow any of the accused to cross-examine the witnesses. The lawsuit was just farce.
• It was decided to execute all the four. On June 6, 1930 all four were sentenced to death. The case was settled within a month of the incident. A week before the verdict was announced, Collector Knight had written a letter to his superiors seeking permission to hang the accused in a public place to intimidate the citizens. The four patriots were hanged on January 12, 1931. It was first day of the local fair of Siddharameshwar Temple. The British administration chose the day with a vicious intention of insulting the local people and making them learn a lasting lesson.

• Rao Jaimal was born on September 17^th, 1507 as the eldest son of Rao Veeramdeo, the ruler of Merta. In 1544, after the death of his father, Jaimal ascended to the throne of Merta. He is remembered widely as one of the greatest warriors, generals, military strategists and statesmen to be born in the gifted land of Bharatvarsha. Hailing from the illustrious clan of Rathore rulers in Marwar or Jodhpur, he ruled over the rich realms of Merta and Badnore.
• Rao Jaimal won immortal fame and glory as a soldier and leader due to his strong defence of the fort of Chittor during the Mughal invasion of 1568. When Akbar launched a full-scale invasion of Mewar in 1567, Maharana Udai Singh, the ruler of Mewar, eagerly sought the assistance of Jaimal in bolstering the counter-offensive. When the siege of Chittor assumed dangerous proportions, the Maharana and his family vacated the fort in order to wage a longer struggle. The Maharana, then, appointed Jaimal as the commander-in-chief of the war effort. Thus, in the long war that followed, Jaimal led the Mewari forces against a massive Mughal army, thus, displaying exemplary military skills.
• Despite facing heavy odds, Jaimal continued attacking the invaders with such ferocity that a stalemate situation soon arose. Facing deadly cannon-fire, exploding ramparts, attack of deadly arrows and a rising toll of casualties, he struck back with double force to destroy the enemy ranks. After holding on for more than a year, when the tide started turning against Mewar due to sheer mismatch of numbers and resources, Jaimal decided to fight to the finish. Along with his trusted men who had bled besides him, he opened the gates of the fort and charged into the enemy ranks. He was martyred at the gates of Chittor fort where a cenotaph celebrates his penultimate sacrifice even to this day.
• Jaimal’s lion-hearted courage and invincible fighting spirit, earned him free-flowing praise and admiration not only in the annals of his own land but also in those of his adversaries. Akbar, his generals and the Mughal historians were awe-struck by the bravery with which Rao Jaimal offered a stout and resolute resistance against the invading force. After the catastrophic war of Chittor, a stone statue of Jaimal seated on an elephant was installed at the main-gate of Agra fort as a mark of respect for the great fighter. Indeed, Jaimal was one of the most influential and leading politicians of his age who impacted the turn of events both at the provincial and imperial levels.

• The veteran Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh Pracharak Mananiya Chaman Lal was born on March 25, 1920, in Sialkot (now in Pakistan). He secured a gold medal in MSc (Zoology) in 1942 from the University of Punjab, Lahore. With job offers around, the young Chaman Lal renounced all comforts and lucrative career to serve for the independence of Bharat. Instead of taking up the job of Lectureship, he became a Sangh Pracharak at Kullu in 1942. Having shifted to Delhi, Chaman Lal ji swung into action in this direction. First of all, he spent days and nights catering to the needs of the people who were victims of partition of India. Arranging settlement, jobs, food and medicine for thousands of such refugees was his prime concern.
• In his early days, he initiated the dream project of creating a global network of the Sangh under the guidance of Shri Madhavrao Mule, the then Punjab Prant Pracharak. Once given the charge of maintaining the contacts with the Indian Diaspora spread around the globe, Ma. Chaman Lal ji excelled by all means. After spending a jail term (following the ban on RSS between February 04, 1948 and July 11, 1949), he rose to become one of the senior Pracharaks of the Sangh who was responsible to facilitate the Indians going abroad. With meticulous efforts and sheer devotion, he soon created a database of Indians spread around 50 countries by the end of 1970s. Later, Delhi turned to be the main Centre of Vishwa Vibhag and Ma. Chaman Lal was synonymous to that Office. He used to spend hours and hours on phone calls and wrote thousands of letters to get Bharat connected with the Indian Diaspora in that pre-internet and pre-mobile phone era. Be it Australia or North America, his helping hands were ever ready. His connection was so deep and permanent with all Bharatvanshi that Sir Anerood Jugnauth, President of Mauritius delayed his son Pravind’s wedding (the current Prime Minister of Mauritius) until Chaman Lal would come to attend it (1992).
• Ma. Chaman Lal in his very few visits abroad was all the time ahead of his times. In Nairobi, Kenya (1977), he planted a tree and spoke on reforestation and warned the people of the havoc of natural disasters and the impending environmental crisis. All in the crowd pledged to plant two tress for one tree cut. Here, Chaman Lal – a gold medalist scientist was speaking! In the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (1995), he spoke to the Indian sisters and lauded their immense contribution in carrying forward the Bharatiya culture amongst their kids. In Rangoon (Yangon), he was an instant hit among school children as he intermingled with them with the inspiring stories of several Indian mahapurush. Ma. Chaman Lal ji in Southeast Asia (1996, 2001) connected deeply with Buddhism, and went to offer his respect to all Buddhist Mandirs. Nobody can ever forget the impact of his vision of bringing the children of royal court brahmanas of the Kingdom of Thailand to be trained in Tamilnadu as their ancestors had come from there about one thousand years ago. This connect was highly lauded by the royalty of Thailand.
• From the first Shakha (gathering for prayers and commitment) of the Indians aboard a ship off the coast of Bombay to Nairobi in 1947 by his deputed person Jagadish Chandra Shastri to the last receiving by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Vajpayee at the doors of his residence in January 2003, the illustrious life of Ma. Chaman Lal spanned for six decades as a constant source of inspiration for all. He was a hero unsung. No wonder, his cremation in Delhi on February 11, 2003 was attended by over 1 lakh people from all walks of life (from a rickshaw puller to the then Vice President of India). It created a flutter in all newspapers and media as they did not have any clue of the person whose antim yatra had such large attendance of people walking miles and miles to have his last glimpse. Before that, at Keshav Kunj, Jhandewalan, a host of dignitaries including Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister Shri L K Advani and its the then RSS Chief Shri K S Sudarshan offered floral tributes to the departed soul. Lauding the late leader’s contributions, Shri Advani said (Ma. Chaman Lal) “served as a bridge between Swayamsewaks the world over and played a key role in the establishment of RSS centres in over 100 countries”. A true Sanyasi and Karmayogi, Ma. Chaman Lal’s legacy lives on in several organisations such as International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS) across the globe.

• Shaheed Sheikh Kamal (5 August 1949 – 15 August 1975) was the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and younger brother of Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
• He completed his matriculation from Shaheen School, Dhaka in 1967 and higher Secondary Certificate Examination from Dhaka College in 1969. He was the General Secretary of the Chatro League in Dhaka College. He practiced sitar at Chhayanaut, a school of music. At the same time, he was involved in diverse cultural activities and a keen sportsman. Kamal was an organizer of the Mukti Bahini. Kamal received war time commission in Bangladesh Army during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
• He worked as the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) of General Osmani the Commander-in-Chief of the Mukti Bahini, during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. After independence, he left the military at the rank of Captain to return to University of Dhaka from where he graduated with Honours in sociology. Days before his tragic demise on 15 August 1975, Kamal completed his Masters Degree in sociology from Dhaka University. On 14 July 1975, he married an athlete, Sultana Khuki.
• Kamal, an avid sportsman, founded the Abahani in 1972, a popular sporting club of Bangladesh. He enjoyed cricket, volleyball, and other sports. Abahani went on to win many local championships. He was killed with the rest of his family on 15 August 1975.

He translated the entire Vedic Vangmaya in lucid Hindi with eloquent comprehensive introductions and accomplished a feat of writing more than 2400 enlightening books in Hindi on all aspects of life. He lived a simple, disciplined life full of devout austerity, visited the Himalayas several times and attained spiritual eminence and foresight. When Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya, took Samadhi on June 02, 1990, Gayatri Jayanti day, Mataji took over all the responsibilities of the mission and managed with great courage.
• Gayatri Teerth, Shanti Kunj welcomes seekers of all faiths and backgrounds. Spread across several acres, its campus constitutes a network of shrines, temples, eateries, lecture theatres, libraries, yoga and meditation halls, recording studios, farms, medical clinics, ayurvedic surgeries and simple residential quarters. At any given point of time, the campus accommodates approximately three thousand sadhaks and their families.
