About : 

• A lighthouse is a tower, building, or any other type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses as an aid to navigation at sea or on inland waterways. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbours, and can also assist in aerial navigation. In ancient times, the lighthouses were the lifeline of maritime navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational systems.
• India has a 7,516.6 kms long coastline. Some of its lighthouses have found a place in the hearts of the people and transformed themselves as an identity of the city or town where they stand. Alleppey and Mahabalipuram are among such landmarks.
• Alleppey (Alappuzha) Lighthouse :
  • Alleppey was a principal port of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore founded by the visionary Prime Minister of Travancore, Raja Kesava Das during the rule of Sri Rama Rajah Bahadur. The port was commissioned in the year 1772 and within a short time, vessels from most Indian and European ports started calling.
  • A modern lighthouse for Alleppey port was first proposed in 1840 but the actual work started only in 1860 with the appointment of Hugh Crawford as Commercial agent to Travancore State and Port Officer, Alleppey. He designed the tower of the lighthouse in the shape of the ‘Queen‘ pawn of chess symbolizing the Queen of Arabian Sea. The construction of the present Alleppey Lighthouse tower was completed in 1862 during the reign of Rama Varma Maharaja.
  • The then modern flashing light had nine Catadioptric lenses and nine coconut oil wick lamps with polished reflectors and a range of 17 nautical miles. The lighting apparatus was supplied by M/s. J. Milano and Sons, Scotland. This served Alleppey Port for a century. The lights were electrified using apparatus supplied by M/s B.B.T. France, in 1960.
• Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) Lighthouse :
  • Mahabalipuram was the port of the Pallavas who ruled South India with their headquarters at Kancheepuram. A lighthouse was erected at Mahabalipuram in 1887 as a part of the development of Madras port to warn the ships approaching Madras port from south about the dangers from Tripasore reef in the neighborhood of Mahabalipuram. Construction of the present lighthouse, a circular 26 meter high granite tower was completed in the year 1900 and the lighting apparatus was supplied by M/s Chance Brothers, Birmingham. A second order for revolving optic and a 55 mm Petroleum Vapour burner as illuminant so as to send its light beams to a distance of 24 Nautical miles, was commissioned on 31^st March, 1901. The light was electrified in 1994 and subsequently the light source was replaced with metal halide lamp.

• Mathematics can be described as the study of quantity, numbers and space. In many ways, mathematics can be regarded as the mother science. Mathematics is an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields such as physics, economics and biology, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries and has also led to the development of entirely new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory.
• The national workshop on Ancient Indian Mathematics with special reference to Vedic Mathematics and Astronomy, passed a resolution on 25^th September, 2010 recommending that 22^nd December i.e. the birth anniversary of mathematics legend Srinivasa Ramanujan be observed as ‘National Mathematics Day‘ every year. The Government of India has since resolved to celebrate the said day, as the National Mathematics Day every year so as to focus the attention of people to mathematics education and its applications. National Mathematics Day is dedicated to Srinivasa Ramanujan (22^nd December, 1887 – 26^th April, 1920) an Indian mathematician and autodidact, who with almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made substantial contribution to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. Ramanujan is placed in the same league as legendary mathematicians such as Euler, Gauss, Newton and Archimedes.
• Born and raised in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan first encountered formal mathematics at the age of 10, demonstrated a natural ability and mastered books on advanced trigonometry and even discovered theorems of his own. By 17, he conducted his own mathematical research on Bernoulli numbers and the Euler-Mascheroni constant. In 1912-1913, he sent samples of his theorems to three academics at the ‘University of Cambridge‘. Only G.H. Hardy recognized the brilliance of his work subsequently inviting him to visit and work with him at Cambridge.
• During his short lifetime, he independently compiled nearly 3900 results, both original and highly unconventional, such as the Ramanujan Prime and the Ramanujan Theta Function that inspired a vast amount of further research. Recently, his formulae have found applications in crystallography and string theory. The Ramanujan Journal, an international publication, was
  launched to publish work in all areas of mathematics influenced by his work.
• The 125^th birth anniversary celebrations of Ramanujan commenced on 22^nd December, 2011 and would be closing on the 22^nd December, 2012. Celebration of National Mathematics Day every year will connect Ramanujan‘s life and work to the people of India and thereby inspire a large section of young Indians. The year 2012 is being celebrated as the National Mathematical Year.

• Sri Shivarathri Shivayogi was a great saint of the 10^th Century AD. Not much is known about his early life. Sri Shivarathri Shivayogi came into limelight with his efforts to restore peace between two warring kings, Rachamalla IV of the Ganges of Talkad and Rajaraja Chola I of the Chola dynasty. When the warring kings went to seek the blessings for victory from Shivayogi, instead of supporting their cause, he persuaded both the kings to abandon war and choose peace. The effect was such that both the enemies reached out to one another to extend the hand of friendship.
  
• Both the kings volunteered to set up a Math or Peetha for the saint to commemorate this event. The Math was thus established on the banks of River Kapila near Suttur, a small village in Nanjanagud Taluk of Mysore district. The Math is now known as Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math.
  
• The foundation stone of the good work done by Sri Shivarathri Shivayogi has continued with ‘Work is Worship’ and ‘Selfless Service’ as the guiding principles of the Math. The Math has been serving people irrespective of caste, creed, gender or colour. The Math has diversified its work in India and abroad in various fields like establishing educational institutions, free boarding hostels, medical and healthcare unit, literary and cultural centres, etc.

• The venerable Bangladesh Police Academy (BPA), the then Police Training College, made its maiden journey in 1912 with an objective to deliver basic training to the police officers and personnel of the then Province of Bengal and Assam. The hundred years old luminous and prestigious Alma Mater is one of the oldest training institutions in the Indian sub-continent.
• The buildings and structures were originally constructed by the Dutch East India Company during the Mughal period in middle of eighteenth century for indigo factories. They sold this property to the British East India Company after the Battle of Palassey (1757). The property was later bought by M/S Robert Watson & Company in 1835. Later the Midnapur Zamindary Estate (landlord of Midnapur) purchased the property from them. The British Government purchased the entire property at a cost of Rupees 25,000 only in 1912 and thereafter established Police Training College in the same year. Major H. Chamney of British-Indian Army was made its founder Principal.

• Consumer awareness and protection is a true indicator of the development of a country and the progressiveness of its civil society. The growing awareness about the rights of consumers and the consciousness and concern for value of money have contributed to the emergence of universal acceptance of the need for protection and promotion of consumer rights.
• The Consumer Protection Act was enacted on 24^th December, 1986 with the objective of protecting the interests of consumers. The Act came into effect from 15^th April, 1987. The guidelines for consumer protection as laid down by the United Nations have been incorporated in the said Act. It enshrines the rights of the consumers namely, Right to safety, Right to be informed, Right to choose, Right to be heard, Right to seek redressal and Right to consumer education. The provisions of the Act are in addition to the provisions of any other law in force to safeguard the interest of the consumers.
• The Department of Consumer Affairs is the nodal Department in the field of consumer protection. Consumer Protection Act, 1986 enabled the nodal department to set up a dispute resolution mechanism exclusively for the consumers which is simple, inexpensive and provides timely redressal. The Act created a three-tier quasi-judicial consumer dispute redressal machinery at the national, state and district levels. As on date, 629 district fora, 35 State Commissions and a National Commission have been established. The Act also provides for setting up of Consumer Protection Councils at the Central, State and district levels, which are advisory bodies to promote and protect consumer’s interests.
• The three tiers of Consumer Fora across the country are being fully computerized and networked through the scheme of ‘Computerization and Computer Networking of Consumer Fora’ (CONFONET). The Central Government is also extending financial assistance to States/Union Territories for strengthening the infrastructure of consumer fora for effective functioning.

About : 

• Ramgopal Maheshwari, popularly known as Babuji, was born on 20^th November, 1911 at Mandolai near Jaipur, Rajasthan.
  
• Deeply influenced by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Ramgopal Maheshwari involved himself in the freedom movement, at a young age. He wore khadi throughout his life and believed in simple living. He was also inspired by Shri Krishnadas Jajoo, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. He started editing and publishing “Maheshwari”, the mouthpiece of the Maheshwari community, at the age of 22. This was the beginning of his career as a journalist. He also took the responsibility of a biweekly publication ‘Nav Rajasthan’ which had been started by Shri Brijlal Biyani at Akola.
  
• Maheshwari started a biweekly paper ‘Nava Bharat’ from Nagpur on 8^th February, 1934. ‘Nava Bharat’ soon became a daily publication and also started editions from several other cities in due course. Babuji made ‘Nava Bharat’ a medium for the nation’s freedom movement. He was subjected to house arrest in the year 1939. During the Quit India movement, he was imprisoned in Nagpur Central Jail.
  
• Ramgopal Maheshwari was a great patron of Hindi language. He was also actively involved in social work and worked towards the eradication of regressive customs. He was an ardent supporter of the cause of women’s emancipation. Along with his wife, Kaushalya Devi, he played an important role in the upliftment of women and protested against the ‘purdah’ system and the harsh rituals at the time of death.
  
• Ramgopal Maheshwari was awarded the ‘Samaj Shiromani’ award in the year 1994 by the Maheshwari community. He also received the ‘Patrakar Shiromani’ award from Pt. Makhanlal University of Journalism, Bhopal for his contribution to ethical journalism.
  
• Ramgopal Maheshwari passed away on 13^th September, 1999.

• The Scinde Horse was raised on 8^th August, 1838 at Hyderabad in the Sind province of Pakistan by Capt. W. Ward to protect the British lines of communication to Baluchistan from the Baluchi marauders.
• The Scinde Horse proved its mettle in its first and famous Battle of Meeanee fought on 17^th February, 1843 under the able leadership of Lt. Col. John Jacob, who was later named as the Father of the Regiment. The regiment displayed immense valour and defeated the formidable opponents. As a matter of respect to the gallant enemy, the Regiment adopted Baluchi warrior as its badge. The Regimental Trumpet Call is the old “Advanced Guard” of 1840. The Scinde Horse (14^th PWO Cavalry) was the first regiment of the present Indian Armoured Corps to equip itself with armoured fighting vehicles.
• On 15^th December, 1947, the first Indian Commandant Lieutenant Colonel P. L. Chopra took over command of the Scinde Horse from Lieutenant Colonel K. R. Brooke, the last British officer to command the Regiment. On 9^th November, 1961, The Vice President of India Dr. S. Radhakrishnan presented a new standard to the Regiment. This was a unique honour as the Scinde Horse was the first Cavalry Regiment to receive the President’s Standard in Post Independence India.
• During the 1965 lndo Pak Conflict, the Regiment performed the role of ‘advance guard’ of the 15 Infantry Division in Lahore sector, led the charge and captured Dograi, thus earning the battle honour Dograi and theatre honour Punjab 1965. In 1971 operations, the regiment spearheaded the advance of 36 Infantry Division. The Regiment has time and again lived up to its motto “Man dies but the Regiment Lives” and exhibited exemplary courage and valour.
• The Scinde Horse has also performed extremely well in various missions abroad and received many accolades and medals. On 24^th August, 1994, it was awarded the United Nations Somalia Medal for OP UNOSOM II. The regiment has been awarded 26 battle honours and 19 theatre honours. On 25^th February, 2011, the regiment was awarded the Army Commander South Western Command, Unit Citation. In addition, the regiment has also won various gallantry awards.

Design : Department of Posts issues a special stamp every year to mark this important day in the national calendar. The design of the stamp is selected from the designs made by the children themselves in a Stamp Design Competition organized by the Department every year across the country. The theme of the competition in 2012 was ‘Post Office 2050‘. Children have used their imagination and creativity to depict their vision of the Post Office of the year 2050. The designs are inspirational and suggest ideas from having a post office manned by a robot to delivering letters to the moon.

Design : This year’s stamp is based on a painting made by ‘Jai Surya P.‘ The First Day Cover and Information Brochure is based on the paintings made by ‘U. Bhavya‘ and ‘Bhavya Mithra T.S.‘ respectively.

About : 

• T. S. Narayanaswami, TSN or Abboy as he was popularly known, was born on 11^th November, 1911.
• He started his career as a junior officer in the Indo-Commercial Bank in the early 1930’s where he made a mark with his industrious nature and an eye for detail. The experience of working in the banking sector provided him with the confidence to venture into the field of business. He started The India Cements Limited in 1946 in Talayathu, a small hamlet in Tirunelveli District along with S. N. N. Sankaralinga Iyer and K. Lakshmanan. The plant soon became one of the leading cement manufacturers in south India.
• The group further ventured into Aluminium, Shipping, Chemicals and Plastics and established Madras Aluminium Company Limited (MALCO), South India Shipping Corporation (SISCO), Chemicals and Plastics India Ltd. (Chemplast) in quick succession. The imagination and initiative of Narayanaswami was the driving force behind these enterprises.
• Narayanaswami was not only involved in social causes but also was an active sponsor of technical education. His advice and guidance was continuously sought by both public and private sectors. He held responsible positions in a number of official and non-official bodies. He was the Chairman of Madras Industrial Investment Corporation, President of Hindustan Chamber of Commerce and member of Executive Committee of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. His appointment as Sheriff of Madras in 1964 was a tribute to his pre-eminence in social and cultural circles and a recognition of his contribution to the industrial progress of the State.
• T. S. Narayanaswami breathed his last on 14.02.1968.

• Diplomatic relations between India and Israel were established in the year 1992. A set of two stamps is being issued by both the countries to mark the completion of twenty years of diplomatic relations. The stamps depict the two festivals of lights, Deepavali and Hanukkah.
  
• Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of ‘Kartik‘ of the Indian lunar calendar which falls in late October or early November. It is a Hindu festival symbolizing the victory of righteousness over evil and is celebrated all over India. The word ‘Deepavali’ literally means ‘rows of lamps’. Deepavali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with wife Sita and younger brother Lakshmana, from his fourteen-year long exile after vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. It is said that in joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas. The festival continues to be a joyous occasion and is celebrated by cleaning, decorating and lighting homes, shops, business establishments and market places, greeting friends and relatives, exchanging and distributing sweets and bursting fire crackers.
  
• Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2^nd century BC. The Babylon Talmud (Tractate Shabbat 21b) describes how the Maccabees found only a little pure oil, enough to light the Temple menorah for a single day. A miracle occurred and this oil lasted for eight days, until more oil could be prepared. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25^th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar as a reminder of this miracle. It is customary to light candles in windows or doorways on each of the eight nights of Hanukkah to make this miracle known. The candles are lit in a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night.
  
• Like the diyas of Deepavali, the Hanukkah candles symbolize the triumph of good over evil and the victory of justice over injustice. The menorah featured on the Hanukkah stamp is inspired by the wooden menorah used by the Jewish community in Mumbai.
