Born on Nov 14, 1925 at Dhaka, East Bengal, British India [now in Bangladesh]

Died on Feb 6, 1976 at Calcutta, West Bengal, India

About :

  • Ritwik Ghatak has come to be regarded as one of the greatest figures in the history of Indian Cinema. Though he made only eight feature and several short films, his brilliant and abrasive films are considered to be among the most revolutionary achievements in contemporary Indian cinema. Ritwik Ghatak was born in Dhaka in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) on 14.11.1925. He belonged to an illustrious family. His father Suresh Chandra Ghatak was a district magistrate and also a poet and playwright. Mother’s name was Indubala Devi. He was their 11th and youngest child. He and his family moved to Kolkata just before millions of other refugees from East Bengal began to flood into the city, fleeing the catastrophic 1943 famine and the Partition of India 1947.
  • Identification with the tide of refugees was to define his practice, providing an overriding metaphor for cultural dismemberment and exile that unified his subsequent creative work.
  • In 1948, Ghatak wrote the first play Kala Sayar (The Dark Lake), and participated in a revival of the landmark play Nabanna. In 1951, Ghatak joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). He wrote, directed and acted in plays and translated Bertolt Brecht and Gogol into Bengali. In 1957, he wrote and directed his last play Jwala (The Burning).
  • Ghatak entered film industry with Nemai Ghoshs Chinnamul (1950) as an actor and assistant director. Chinnamul was followed two years later by Ghatak’s first completed film Nagarik (1952), both major break-through for the Indian cinema. Ghatak’s early work sought theatrical and literary precedent in bringing together a documentary realism, a remarkable stylized performance often drawn from the folk theatre, and a Brechtian use of the filmic apparatus.
  • The product of an early involvement in politics and people’s theatre, Ghatak, as a filmmaker, was bent on wedding his political activism with cultural content as he fashioned popular form melodrama, songs, dances – into appropriate vehicles for radical political expression. His films are almost all veiled autobiography. Ghatak came of age during the convulsions of the 1940s – World War II, the terrible “man-made famine” of 1944, the communal violence that came with independence, and especially the partition of Bengal, which obsessed him all his life. His subjects are almost invariably chosen from among the uprooted and the dispossessed; parentless children, homeless families, disoriented refugees, and the petit bourgeoisie, economically broken by their exile. Yet, there is a glimmer of hope in even the darkest movements. He directed eight full-length films. His best known films were Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star) (1960), Komal Gandhar (E-Flat) (1961) and Subarnarekha (1962), a trilogy based in Kolkata and addressing the condition of refugee-hood. His other feature films were Ajantrik (The Unmechanical, The Pathetic Fallacy) (1958), Bari Theke Paliye (The Runaway) (1959), Titash Ekti Nadir Naam (A River called Titash) (1973), Jukti Takko Aar Gappo (Reason, Debate and a Story) (1974). Short films and documentaries made by Ghatak are The Life of Adivasis (1955), Places of Historic Interest in Bihar (1955), Scientists of Tomorrow (1967), Ye Kyun (Why/The Question) (1970), Amar Lenin (My Lenin) (1970), Puruliar Chhau (The Chhau Dance of Purulia) (1970) and Durbar Gati Padma (The Turbulent Padma) (1971). However, despite widespread critical acclaim, Ritwik Ghatak’s films are not easily available.
  • Ghatak moved briefly to Pune in 1966, where he taught at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He died on 06.02.1976. Ritwik Ghatak’s cinema is without any parallel in Indian film history. Jacob Levich has remarked that there was a kind of impudence in Ghatak’s ceaseless tinkering with film language. His films are ragged, provisional, intensely personal, yet epic in shape, scope, and aspirations. Satyajit Ray, a contemporary of Ghatak wrote in the foreword to a collection of Ghatak’s articles on cinema titled “Cinema and I”, “Ritwik was one of the few truly original talents in the cinema this country has produced. Nearly all his films are marked by an intensity of feeling coupled with an imaginative grasp of the technique of film making. As a creator of powerful images in an epic style he was virtually unsurpassed in Indian cinema.

Born on Sep 27, 1826 at Kerala, India

Died on Jan 28, 1963 at Dhrubsthali, Kathmandu, Nepal

About :

  • Born in Kerala state of India in 1862 A.D., Shivapuri Baba achieved Divinity. After visiting the entire world two times, Baba came to reside at Pashupat Region of Nepal and guided his followers at Shivapuri hills and Sleshmantak Forest (Dhruvasthali) until his death in 1963 A.D. Due to his invaluable teachings, which he preached from the Shivapuri hills, he was popularly known as Shivapuri Baba instead of his real name Shree Govindananda Bharati.
  • The chief contribution of Shivapuri Baba to the mankind is his principles of righteous life. According to him, man suffers from three miseries on earth. His principles of righteous life explain three disciplines, for freeing human beings from the aforesaid miseries.
  • Physical-intellectual discipline, the first one which has the virtues to purify health and knowledge, gives dexterity in actions to make life successful. Pleasures from them end along death. Mental-moral discipline (the second one) frees man from envy and rage; strengthens commanding and controlling powers. It removes worries and derives contentment, but this too ends along death. Similarly, Spiritual Discipline, the third and the last one, frees man from Desire and enlightens the individual. It comes through meditation and makes one Omniscient – Omnipotent – Omnipresent – ever blissful and immortal, with the grace of God.
  • Thus, the righteous life is the grand panacea to all human miseries, which ultimately leads all towards the Divine land of no return.
  • The teachings of Shivapuri Baba on righteous life are simple, easy, and desirable to all people, community, religion, and situation.

About :

  • Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink”. Coleridge in his famous classic Ancient Mariner so succinctly described the paradox of water as a resource. Two thirds of earth is covered with water and one third by land. Yet, the scarcity of fresh water has posed a major challenge before the human beings in the present century. Global warming is affecting the glacial regions and cataclysmic changes leading to rising seas and inundation of low lying land masses can happen more quickly than we ever anticipated. Insufficient water storage capabilities are leading to recurrent floods and draughts world over.
  • India faces a challenging water future. Water resource management system requires immediate attention and a national policy perspective to sustain the developments that India envisages. Water availability of the country as a whole has been assessed as 1869 billion cubic meters (BCM) of which only 1123 BCM can be utilized that includes 690 BCM surface water and 433 BCM ground water resources.
  • India has a highly seasonal pattern of rainfall with 50% of precipitation falling in just 15 days and over 90% of river flows in just 4 months. Throughout history people have adapted to this unique flow by either living along the river banks or harvesting imaginatively in tanks and underground storages. Water management was largely community oriented. Over last 150 years India has made huge investments in managing water infrastructure and to solve the water crisis.
  • India can store only 30 days of rainfall compared to 900 days in major river basins in the arid areas of developed countries. The present per capita storage capacity is only 207 cubic meters as compared to 1111 cubic meters in China. Growing population further puts pressure on per capita availability of water. It is estimated that it will be about 1341 cubic meters by 2025. The need for storage will still grow due to climatic changes that are bound to have major impact on India.
  • India faces challenges in the water sector in the form of declining per capita availability of water, over exploitation of ground water resources leading to lowering of ground water table in certain pockets, deterioration in the water quality, cost and time over-runs in the completion of irrigation and multi-purpose projects and poor maintenance of the existing systems. Of-course, the most important challenge is to appropriately address the natural disasters like floods and droughts.
  • In such a background it is extremely essential that our precious asset is governed by a national perspective and an effective plan to harvest, conserve and utilize water gainfully. The Union Cabinet in its meeting on 4.1.2007 accepted the proposal of the Ministry of Water Resources and declared year 2007 as Water Year. The National Common Minimum Programme has laid great emphasis on water sector. Public investment in irrigation is planned to be stepped up in a sympathetic manner. Irrigation and drinking water have been accepted as two important components of Bharat Nirman.

About :

  • The SNOWS BASILICA is situated in Tuticorin. An ancient structure, it is a striking and significant landmark unfolding the tale of the social history of our country. It is a living symbol of India’s cultural contact with the world, especially the medieval Europe, and is a cornerstone of the multiculturalism of our country.
  • The story started when Fr. Pedru Consalves build a church in Tuticorin is 1538 A.D. and dedicated it to St. Peter. Then through the efforts of the priests of Society of Jesus, a church dedicated to our Lady of Mercy was consecrated by the Rev. Monsignor Devoura, on 5th August, 1582 on the feast of Our Lady of Snows.
  • The Church underwent changes and came in to present structure when especially Fr. Vigil Mange made efforts to beautify the structure. He faced difficulties from the Dutch. However, he managed to obtain permission from the Dutch Government at Ceylon. The newly constructed Church was consecrated and blessed on the feast of Our Lady of Snows on 5th August, 1713 A.D.
  • The statue of Our Lady of Snows was initially kept in a Chapel in a convent of the Augustinian Sisters in Manila, Philippines. St. Francis Xavier wished that it should be sent to Tuticorin. The statue was received at this Church from Philippines on 9th June 1555 A.D.
  • From 1857 onwards, the local devotees faced problems because of multiple control of the Dutch, the Portuguese and the French over the diocese and the parish. This matter was resolved in 1923. Accordingly, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows came under the Bishop of Thoothukudi in 1930.
  • Pope John Paul-II raised this Church to the status of Basilica on 30th July 1982 on the occasion of its 400th Anniversary.
  • Made in a beautiful Portuguese style architecture, the Basilica has, for centuries, drawn the devotees from far and wide. People of all faiths visit in large numbers throughout the year seeking peace, solace and happiness.

About :

  • Festivities and celebrations with their panoramic hues and shades pass the Indian landscape in a never ending procession. A vast theatre of contrasting seasons, a rainbow of customs and traditions, a colourful garland of languages and costumes, India is a world in itself. After the monsoon clouds retreat filling the rivers, ponds, and fields and the hearts of peasants and farmers with hope, joy and anticipation of a good harvest, the entire country gets into blossoming of joyous raptures to greet the new year.
  • While 1st of January is the New Year’s Day in many parts of the world, different cultures have different interpretations of the new year depending upon the respective calendar system. India still looks at the rain bearing clouds, the solar and lunar movements, the ancient ballads and mythologies and above all the ripening of grains in the fields. The Assamese New Year is Bihu, the Bengali Nabo Varsho is 1st of Baishakh, Gudipadava is the first day of new year in Maharashtra, Ugadi is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Puthandu is the new year in Tamil Nadu, Pooram Vishu in Kerala and, all more or less coincide with the Vaishakh or Chaitra months in March / April.
  • The new year is in fact one of the longest surviving festival traditions in the human history. The ancient Babylonians observed this approximately 4000 years ago. The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and started the year on the 1st of March. The months January and February were added around 713 BC. In 153 BC 1st January was considered as the beginning of the year, and it continued even after adoption of the Julian calendar in 45 BC. With the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582 AD acceptance of 1st January as the new year’s day gradually increased, though it still took a long time. The celebrations, festivities and the tradition of greeting and meeting friends and family apart from prayers and worships etc., is a common feature across the globe.
  • The human tendency to greet the onset of the year can perhaps be traced to the primal joy of experiencing the first rain drops of the season, seeing the first leaves germinating from the seeds, hearing the first song of the bird that greets a new dawn, or watching a new rivulet borne out of the melting icicles.

About :

  • Wilson College has a continuous history as an educational institution going back to 1832. It began as Ambrolie School in Girgaum, later seeing several changes of sites and names, eventually being called Wilson School. A collegiate section from which Wilson College developed was added in 1836.
  • The founder of these institutions was the Rev. John Wilson D.D., F.R.S. of the Scottish Missionary Society. John and his wife Margaret arrived in Bombay on February 14, 1829, learnt the local language and with great zeal set up schools for boys and girls of all castes and classes.
  • John Wilson was a linguist, an orientalist, an author. In recognition of his service to the cause of education, social awakening and scholarship, the Department of Archives, Government of Maharashtra, in 2000, honoured Dr. John Wilson as one of the Seven founders of Modern Bombay.
  • Here in Wilson‘s institutions were made the first efforts to frame academic courses, to write text books in the sciences, arts and religion, to conduct public examinations and award its own certificates. It is in these institutions that the portals of education were opened for the first time to girls and boys of lower and upper castes, the socially disadvantaged and deprived and the first lessons in human equality and dignity were taught.
  • This pioneering work in higher education began a quarter of a century later, before the establishment of any official body of this purpose. The vision and foresight of Dr. Wilson saw the establishment of the University of Bombay in 1857. On 4th December, 1861, the collegiate section of Wilson‘s institution under the name of Free General Assembly’s Institution became the first privately owned, non-government institution to get affiliated to the University.
  • For many years both the school and college sections were housed in one building, but largely through the efforts of Dr. Mackichan, a site for the college was secured at Chowpatty and the present college building was opened on 14th March 1889. Thereafter the institute was called Wilson College.
  • The high intellectual rigour and moral excellence of the people who guided the college, saw three of it first four Principals as Vice Chancellors of the University of Bombay, followed by many distinguished alumni holding the same position.
  • Fostering a tradition of liberalism and freedom, the Scottish Principals inspired many students to be at the centre stage of freedom struggle, Usha Mehta, Acharya Kriplani, S.A. Dange, Aloo Dastoor, B.G. Kher to mention a few.
  • Wilson College gave India its only Prime Minister from BombayMorarji Desai, and the Bharat Ratna recipients P.V. Kane and D.V. Karve are also proud alumni of the institution. In 1952, the Management of college came under and autonomous Board of Governors in India. Since 1963, the college is under the John Wilson Education Society.
  • Today Wilson College is one of the few colleges in Mumbai which offer a very wide variety of subjects in the Arts, Science and Vocational stream, along with undergraduate courses in Management Studies and Mass Media.
  • The aim and guiding principle remains “to produce intellectually well trained, morally upright, socially conscious and spiritually oriented men and women.
  • Text : Based on material provided by the proponent.
