About : 

• The General Post Office of Bombay was established in 1794 by the then appointed Postmaster General for Bombay Presidency, Mr. Charles Elphinstone. Before that, Bombay had only an agency Post Office that the East India Company had brought into existence. All despatches of mail were brought in and delivered out of that agency Post Office.
• The East India Company was keen on overcoming the difficulty of establishing contacts with far-flung regions of the country under its occupation by establishing postal communication connecting the principal towns. Lord Clive’s Minute of 1766 gave the lead. But the first regular Post Office had to wait for Sir Warren Hastings, till 1774 when Calcutta GPO was established. An overland route between Madras and Bombay was inaugurated in the following year but Bombay GPO took still more time.
• By the time the Indian Post Office was recognised as a separate organisation in 1854, Bombay GPO, over a half-a-century old, had grown into an impressive hub of written communication.
• In those days, this GPO was housed in a congeries of small buildings near the Apollo Pier. These buildings were lost in a fire. Following the fire, the GPO moved in 1869 into the building built for it. In course of time, that building became inadequate for the GPO, and very early in this century, plans were already afoot for construction of a new building. Mr. John Begg, Consulting Architect to the Government, was given the task. He designed the present building, and was in charge of its construction, which took nine years from 1904. In 1913, GPO moved into this building with 12,000 square metres of work-space in two floors. This edifice situated in the heart of the city is a crowning heritage building. It is in Indo-Saracenic style with a solid exterior, and well-ventilated and comfortable interiors. The Department is earnest in conserving the building in its original form, in keeping with the heritage status.
• Bombay GPO is now the biggest Post Office in the country and one of the biggest in the world. It catered to over 50,000 address sites by 1994, most of which were recipients of voluminous mail.
• The Business Hall of the GPO is unique with 101 counter positions, following the addition of the 1200 square metre large Bi-Centenary Hall, and working from 0800 hrs. to 2300 hrs. where all businesses of a Post Office are transacted for some 25,000 people everyday. A good number of counters are computer-run.

• The Year 1994 marked the 200^th anniversary of the College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras. • The Remount Veterinary Corps, one of the oldest services of the Indian Armed Forces, completed 215 years of long and distinguished service by 1994.
• Since its inception in 1779 as ‘Stud Department’ the Corps has undergone a series of organisational changes including the creation of the Army Veterinary Department in 1826 followed by the Horse Breeding Department in 1876. The Indian Army Veterinary Corps was raised in 1920 alongwith the establishment of two Army Veterinary Schools. With the partition in 1947, most of the horse breeding areas and Studs went to Pakistan, but the Corps responded with resilience and vigour to overcome the setback and make a new beginning. The Mil Vet Laboratory was shifted from Lahore to Lucknow, the Remount & Veterinary departments were amalgamated to form the Indian Remount Veterinary Corps (IRVC), and the RVC Centre & School, which imparts professional training to officers and men besides breeding, rearing and training of dogs, shifted to Meerut.
• The Corps has seen action during both the World Wars, and after Independence it took part in the J&K operations (1947-48), NEFA 1962 and in the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. Recently the Corps gave support to the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and is presently [i.e. by 1994] a part of the Indian contingent of UN Forces in Somalia. In recognition of its glorious contribution, the Corps was presented ‘Colours’ by the President of India on 21^st December ’89.
• Today, the Corps, which contributes to the logistic needs of the Armed Forces, is proud of its highly competent and well organised infrastructure in the equine and canine fields. The breeding of specialist horses for equestrian sports and training of dogs to meet the emerging security needs has, of late, acquired particular significance. In its pursuit of excellence and dedication to the motto ‘Service to animals is our Duty’ the Corps is constantly engaged in upgrading its professional capabilities and honing the skills and endurance of its officers and men.

• Begum Akhtar or Malika-i-Ghazal, as she was popularly known, has rightfully been called the mother of ghazals in the Indian subcontinent. Though the ghazal had its origins in the times of Hazrat Amir Khusro about six centuries ago, it was Begum Akhtar who by her passion for ghazal singing and perseverance brought it to the forefront as a musical expression.
• The date 2^nd December 1919, stands out as a red letter day in the life of the Begum. On this day at the tender age of five, she joined the local missionary school in Faizabad where the renowned singer Gauhar Jan heard her sing. Impressed, she predicted a bright future for little Akhtari. Her faith was vindicated when Begum Akhtar reached legendary heights of musical excellence. Few can forget the exceptional popularity and the outstanding sales of her memorable ghazals especially, “Deewana Banana Hai To Deewana Banade” that mesmerised music lovers.
• In art, as well as in life, Begum Akhtar became a symbol of gender assertion as well as the spirit of secularism. Her song “Ganga Maiya“ thrilled listeners throughout India.

• The Calcutta Blind School was founded in the year 1894 by the late Rev. Lal Bihari Shah and has been a torchbearer for the education of the visually handicapped in India for one hundred years.
• The school which was started with one blind child in a small college and nurtured by Reverend Shah is today a co-educational, residential school of about 150 boys and girls, affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. It has been successful in attracting the active sympathy and support of the people who have given their unstinted time and labour to the building up of this institution.
• One of the prime concerns of the school is to see that the students join the mainstream of life and secure gainful employment. While, therefore, the school emphasizes extra-curricular activities including music, crafts, sports, physical exercises and even enrolment of its wards as scouts and guides, there is a well planned programme for vocational training, typewriting, light engineering and training for teachers and telephone operators.
• As a crowning achievement in the endeavour to equip the sightless for better job opportunities, the school has implemented a project on computer education. The computer is specially designed with a Speech Synthesizer and a software known as Computer Assistance for the Blind (CAB).
• Many of the students of this school are now working in Government undertakings or in the private sector besides having set up businesses under self-employment schemes with bank loans arranged by the school.
• The Calcutta Blind School has also opened a research wing, where the main focus would be on the study of the socio-economic conditions of the visually handicapped in the context of their family, community and the society at large as well as on education and the preventive and curative aspects of sightlessness. The research wing has plans to also develop training modules for adults.

About : 

• J.R.D. Tata stood out as one of the great personalities of India in the twentieth century.
  
• Born in Paris in 1904, he was appointed the Chairman of Tata Sons Limited at the age of 34. With his charismatic and forward-looking leadership Mr. Tata, in a career spanning well over half a century, not only led the Tata Group to new heights of achievement but also set standards for Indian industry as a whole. Expanding under his stewardship, the Group now covers a range which encompasses steel, generation of power, engineering, hotels, consultancy services, information technology, consumer goods and industrial products.
  
• A pioneer of civil aviation in the country, Mr. Tata ushered in the era of air transport in India in 1932. This enterprise blossomed into Air–India International which proudly carried the Indian flag to all parts of the globe.
  
• He also crusaded for causes which he felt were in the national interest such as family planning and population control. A dedicated educationist, Mr. Tata firmly believed that the spread of literacy, particularly among women, would raise the standard of living of the Indian people.
  
• Mr. Tata gave public expression to the guiding principles of his life as far back as 1965 when he said:
  “Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without deep thought and hard work;
  
  One must think for oneself and never accept at their face value slogans and catch phrases to which, unfortunately, our people are too easily susceptible;
  
  One must forever strive for excellence, or even perfection, in any task however small, and never be satisfied with the second best;
  
  No success or achievement in material terms is worthwhile unless it serves the needs or interest of the country and its people and is achieved by fair and honest means;
  
  Good human relations not only bring great personal rewards but are essential to the success of any enterprise”.
  
• Numerous national and international honours were bestowed on Mr. Tata. He was awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great (Papal Honour bestowed by His Holiness Pope Paul V on the occasion of his visit to India in December 1964); Honorary Air Vice-Marshal, Indian Air Force, 1974; Knight Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, August 1978; Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa), University of Bombay, 1981; Bessemer Medal of the Institute of Metals, London, 1986; Daniel Guggenheim Medal Award for 1988, Daniel Guggenheim Medal Board of Award; United Nations Population Award for 1992.
  
• He was conferred the country’s highest honour the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1992.
  
• Despite all this Mr. Tata remained a modest man. He was sensitive to the needs of his employees and his natural compassion and liking for people endeared him to thousands in all walks of life.
