About : 

• Pandit Ravishankar Shukla was born in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh on 2^nd August, 1877. His ancestors had migrated there from Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. A self respecting Indian, he resigned from the government post of munsif and start practising law in Raipur. Soon he became a top lawyer there.
• Before joining politics, he devoted himself to the upliftment of society. Like an awakened philosopher, he very soon realized that the primary duty of every Indian is to work for the Independence of the country. He, therefore, started working with Gandhiji. Gandhiji entrusted him with the duty to awaken the dormant political awareness of whole Madhya Pradesh. Pandit Ravishankar bid a final adieu to joys of his grandeur and got engrossed in the freedom movement with an all out effort and that was the beginning of a series of imprisonments in his life.
• In 1937, when the Indians acquired partial power, he became the Education Minister for a few months and then the Prime Minister (it was the contemporary form of address) of Madhya Pradesh. He took part in Quit India movement, and relinquished his post by the end of 1939. Again in 1945, he held the reigns of Madhya Pradesh as the Chief Minister and for the last ten years of his life, he held this post without any controversy.
• He proved himself as a very successful administrator. During his period there was an all round development of Madhya Pradesh. The introduction of various schemes, establishment of industries, commissioning of Bhilai Steel Plant and starting of many Universities were amongst the great achievements. The state of Madhya Pradesh remained fully peaceful during his regime. Shuklaji had played the leading role in the merger of states, particularly the merger of Hyderabad into the republic which Vallabh Bhai Patel appreciated whole heartedly.
• In spite of being very religious minded, he was very liberal to other religions also. He laid special emphasis on the upliftment of women. He was a staunch opponent of illiteracy, purdah and dowry system.
• He passed away on 31^st December 1956, at the age of eighty.

• Teongsi Sirijunga, the saint of the Kirat (Limbu) was a great religious preacher and propagator of Kirat language, religion and culture. He was born at Sinam Village in Taplejung District in 1704 V.S. He popularized “Mundhum” Scripture through the medium of Kirat language and script. He is said to have been killed by some bigoted fanatics violently against the religious faith he zealously endeavoured to propagate.

• THE BIRDS OF PREY share some common features, characteristics and food habits. They have sharp curved bills, powerful falcons, fierce looks, swift flight, keen eyesight and a carnivorous diet. We are justly proud of the hundred and more resident and non-resident birds of prey that India is blessed with. The impressive list includes – Kites, Bazas, Buzzards, Goshawks, Shikras, Sparrow Hawks, Eagles, Sea Eagles, Serpent Eagles, Fishing Eagles, Harriers, Ospreys, Falcons, Falconets, Hobbys, Merlins, Kestrels, Vultures and Owls. There are over 100 species (in three Families) not including the 27 species of Owls. Today the survival of some of these birds is endangered due to hunting, destruction of their habitat, and environmental pollution.
  • 1. Pandion Haliaetus Haliaetus (Osprey)
    A handsome, water frequenting, fish eating, non-resident hawk. Seen in winter throughout the Indian Union. Visits coastal lagoons, estuaries, rivers, jheels and reservoirs. Breeds in Europe but is said to breed in small numbers along the Himalayas.
  • 2. Falco Peregrinus Peregrinator (Shahin Falcon)
    This powerful, streamlined falcon prefers steep, rugged bills. Flies swiftly and hurls itself at its prey at tremendous speed. The bird can be trained to hunt other birds. Breeds in the entire Indian Union except the desert and semi-desert areas.
  • 3. Gypateus Barbatus Aureus (Himalayan Bearded Vulture)
    A large, impressive, eagle-like vulture with an over (9ft.) wing span, a ‘beard’ of stiff, bristle like feathers. Found in the Himalayas from Ladakh, Kashmir, to NE Assam, at elevations of 1200 to 4000 metres. It soars to immense heights near mountain slopes or valleys. It drops large bones on rocks from a height of 50 to 70 metres, and the splintered bones and marrow form part of its diet. Unlike other vultures, it can take off the ground without a preliminary run.
  • 4. Aquila Chrysaetos Daphanea (Himalayan Golden Eagle)
    This majestic, large and powerful eagle with a wing span of over 6 feet prefers desolate and rugged mountain sites with crags and precipices. Found in altitudes of 1850 to 5500 metres from western Himalayas to Eastern Assam. They hunt singly or in pairs swooping down on its prey with terrific velocity.

Name : Madan Lal Dhingra

About : 

• The story of the patriotic impulse and revolutionary activities revolving around India House in London during the first decade of this century constitutes a fascinating, thrilling and inspiring chapter in the annals of our many faceted freedom struggle. Among the many young men who would visit the India House, was a Punjabi student Madan Lal Dhingra. He belonged to a well established and wealthy family of Amritsar known for their loyalty to the British.
• Madan Lal Dhingra after doing his intermediate at Amritsar joined a college in Lahore. In 1906, he went to England to do a course in engineering. While studying in London, he came in contact with V.D. Savarkar and even stayed for some time in the “India House”. He was mostly a silent listener. He absorbed, in all his discussions with other leaders that what was needed is action and not words; India must have martyrs if her cause is to be realised. In the meanwhile, his family wanted to wean him a way from the ‘evil’ revolutionary influences. But Madan Lal Dhingra was a man of deep conviction and determination.
• On 1^st July, 1909 Dhingra attended the anniversary meeting of the National Indian Association and Organisation of Indian loyalists. After the meeting ended, Curzon Willie was moving around among the audience and turned to Dhingra who fired at him and Curzon Willie died on the spot. Madan Lal Dhingra made no attempt to escape and remained absolutely calm as he was arrested and taken to Brixton prison. His entire family disassociated itself from this act and a telegram was sent by his father to Lord Morley in this connection.
• Dhingra refused to offer any defence or to plead for mercy of any kind. During the preliminary hearing, he asked for a death sentence. He was sentenced to death by the Sessions Court on 23^rd July, and he graciously thanked the Judge. After Dhingra‘s death his statement which was banned appeared in the daily Irish and American newspapers. Madan Lal Dhingra‘s last wish to have his cremation according to Hindu rites, and the sale proceeds of his belongings to be given to some national fund. This was not respected and his dead body was buried in a grave.
• Madan Lal Dhingra who blazed the trail of revolutionary movement in Punjab belonged to the glorious galaxy of its youthful and valiant sons like Kartar Singh and other revolutionaries.
