About : 

• Mr. B. P. Koirala was born on 8^th September 1914. He had led the 1951 revolution for the establishment of democracy in Nepal. He had also contributed a lot in neighbouring India‘s struggle for independence.
• After the overthrow of the Rana rule in 1951, he became the first Home Minister from among the common people. Likewise, he became the first ever elected Prime Minister of Nepal in 1959. After the usurpation of the Parliamentary democracy in Dec. 1960, he was put into prison for eight long years. Having spent another eight years, after the imprisonment, in political exile, Mr. Koirala returned home propounding the policy of national unity and reconciliation in Dec. 1976, for the restoration of democracy in Nepal.
• He breathed his last on July 11, 1982.
• Mr. Koirala was a statesman of international renown and the most popular leader at home.
• A serene thinker, he was also a profound literary personality, who revealed the intricate psychological dimensions of human entity in Nepali literature.

• Dnyaneshwari is regarded as the most outstanding work of Dnyaneshwar, the Saint-poet of Maharashtra. Dnyaneshwari is widely popular work possessing a germinal quality with regard to poetic traditions which were soon established in the Marathi language. Unique exponence, it at once strikes as an original composition – an expression of the personality of Dnyaneshwar and his philosophy. Readers often have to remind themselves that it is a commentary of Bhagwad Geeta. Originally named as ‘Bhavartha Dipika’ by the poet himself, the composition became popular as Dnyaneshwari, after the name of the poet.
• Saint Dnyaneshwar lived during the 13^th Century A.D. when Hindu Society was replete with narrow minded castes and social evils, dominated by superstitions, rites and rituals, sacrifices, Yagna, Mantra and Tantra. It was against this background that Dnyaneshwar interpreted the Geeta in the popular language of the common people. Through his work, Dnyaneshwar sought to reform society by discouraging corrupt practices, re-emphasising moral values, discarding rituals from the Bhakti Marg and pleading for abandonment of the rigid caste system. Advocating ‘Chidvilasvad’ or ‘Sphoortivad’ – the doctrine that “this whole world is illuminated with His light” – Dnyaneshwar made a unique impact on the philosophical thought of Maharashtra. One’s work or profession itself became an act of worship, under the influence of this doctrine, among all castes and creeds elevating the lives of the downtrodden and outcastes. The Saint poet led a victorious ‘rebellion’ against religious orthodoxy.
• Dnyaneshwari thus merged the social requirements of the people with their religious faith thereby removing the dichotomy between the spiritual and temporal worlds. The ‘Warkaris’ (devotees) looked upon Dnyaneshwari as their ‘mother’ and sang its praises throughout the land. Caste, creed, or sex did not retain a barrier for spiritual upliftment. Dnyaneshwari reached the largest cross section of Maharashtra Society.
• Dnyaneshwari is a great spiritual epic written 700 years ago and still relevant today. Though Saint Dnyaneshwar is also credited with other works like ‘Amritanubhav’, ‘Changdeo Pasashthi‘, ‘Haripath’ and ‘Abhangas’, Dnyaneshwari stands out in its fusion of devotional philosophy and melodious poetry, read with thrill of rapture and held in the highest veneration.

• The city of Calcutta commemorated 300 years of its existence. It was on 24^th August 1690 that Job Charnock had landed in the village of Sutanati at the mouth of Hooghly. The three villages of Sutanati, Gobindpur and Kalikata merged into one and developed into the large township which took the name of the last.
• Calcutta was the capital of the country during the greater part of the British Rule. However, it was also the city which had become the centre of the Indian freedom struggle. It was here that the first rendering of National Anthem composed by Satyendranath Tagore was adopted in 1867. It was also in this very city that it was replaced by Bankim Chandra’s “Bande Mataram” in 1875, which soon become the slogan for national unity and freedom struggle.
• The city of Calcutta grew and flourished mainly on account of the river Ganga. The Ganga provided access from the sea and helped its trade and commerce and thus played an integral role in the development of the city during the last three centuries. Ganga has indeed been the River of Life for the city of Calcutta.
• British political supremacy in India, of which the city was the seat and symbol, was challenged from this very city. The 152 ft. high tower, now called Shaheed Minar, was erected by the British in 1828 to commemorate a war victory. But it was under this monument that innumerable rallies were held against the British. Rabindranath Tagore too had addressed a protest rally under this monument in September 1931. The city’s contribution to the struggle for freedom has indeed been an important witness to that.

About : 

• Bhakta Kanakadas (1488-1578) was a mystic, saint and singer of Karnataka. The son of Beerappa, a ‘danayaka’ (army chief) who controlled 78 villages, and Bachamma, he learnt the arts of war and administration. Succeeding his father at the age of seventeen, he made his mark both as chief and as a warrior. But the early death of his wife and a traumatic experience on the battlefield when he was at death’s door changed his life completely. He became a disciple of Sri Vyasaraya and joined the galaxy of the ‘dashakoota‘ or Servants of the Lord, and became one of its brightest stars. He was sometimes humiliated by foolish men because he was a shepherd by his birth; but by the flame-like purity and radiance of his life, he won golden opinions from the truly enlightened like his Master Vyasaraya and Sri Purandaradasa. A born poet, he composed a number of poems ranging from the ornate ‘Mohanatarangini‘ and the immensely popular ‘Nala Charitre’ to the simple lucid and philosophical ‘Haribhaktisara’ and another one ‘Ramadanya Charitre‘. At once a great mystic and a gifted composer, he sang the glory of the Lord and spread the message of Right Living. He was a chieftain who had served the Vijayanagar Empire in the days of its dazzling glory; he saw it crushed and humiliated. He had known pomp and power, but had given them up for a life dedicated to the Lord and to His service. His was a life rich in experience. His teachings reached every heart and every home on the wings of music. A great soul seeking salvation, a wise teacher of mankind, an outspoken mentor of society, a revered mystic and musician, Kanakadas has become the teacher of the learned and the masses. Some of his songs, denouncing caste and embodying the message of Right Conduct, are on everybody’s lips. His life and works shed their effulgence across the centuries, guiding men and women along the path of wisdom and serenity.

• India‘s is an ancient civilisation which has seen the rise and fall of many kingdoms and cities. Many of its cities, through hundreds of years old, are still vibrant with life today. To draw attention to this rich legacy, Department of Posts proposes to issue special stamps on historic cities of India from time to time. Our first set consists of special stamps on Bikaner, Cuttack and Hyderabad.
  
• The city of Bikaner was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, son of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. Bika laid the foundation of a city which has endured the vicissitudes of five centuries of turbulent history. Junagarh Fort was built by Raja Rai Singh a century later. Situated in the heart of great Thar desert with its oppressive and hostile climate, Bikaner has yet flourished in arts, crafts and culture. The Anup Sanskrit Library is world renowned. Maharaja Ganga Singh, who modernised the city besides building numerous public utilities and the Lalgarh Palace, also constructed the longest brick-lined canal in 1927. With its rich cultural heritage, Bikaner is one of the foremost tourist spots in Rajasthan.
  
• The city of Cuttack is celebrating the millennium of its existence. It is situated on the Peninsula created by the bifurcation of Mahanadi river. Cuttack played and continuous to play, a dominant role in the history of India. The most important land mark of the city is the fort of Barabati which was originally built by King Anangabhim Deva–III (1211-38). He also built the stone revetment along the banks of Mahanadi and Katojori rivers to protect the city against the flood ravages. King Mukunda Deva (1559-68) added to Barabati Fort to make it a 9 storey building. Cuttack, over the centuries, fostered and nurtured the growth of civilisation in this part of India and remains famous for its arts, crafts and culture. Among other notable landmarks are the Amareswar temple and the Jain temple built in the 18^th century.
  
• This year the city of Hyderabad completes 400 years of its existence. Founded along the river Mussi, a tributary of river Krishna, environs of Hyderabad have highly picturesque appearance. It was founded by Mohammed Quli, the fifth of the Qutab–Shahi kings. Hyderabad was the fulcrum of cultural and political activities in the southern part in India more commonly known as Deccan. The city boasts of Charminar, a stately rectangular building of 180 ft. height built in 1591. It also has the famous Salarjung Museum. It is dotted with water reservoirs such as Osman Sagar, Himayet Sagar, Hussain Sagar and Meer Alam Tank. The city got consolidated as the seat of power for the erstwhile state of Hyderabad during the reign of Asaf Jah, the Nizam of Hyderabad. Ever since its inception, the city has been centre of rich cultural traditions and customs side by side with its status of political and commercial capital.

• The exchange of greetings between two friends is very common. The most popular medium of exchange of greetings these days is a greeting card usually sent by post. It is an illustrated message that express, seriously or humorously, friendship, love, affection, goodwill, gratitude, sympathy or some other sentiments. Greeting cards are also sent on occasions of birth days, anniversaries and on religious, cultural and social occasions. In addition to get-well and bon-voyage messages, cards are also sent as congratulations and for conveying thanks.
• The exchange of illustrated greetings between friends has been recorded from ancient times. The celebration of New Year in Egypt was usually marked by exchange of such symbolic presents as scent bottles and scarabs inscribed “au ab nab“ (all good luck). In Rome, the medium of expression of greetings was exchange of strenae, normally branches of Laurel or Olive, coated with gold leaf. Seasonal greetings were symbolised by exchanging Roman Lamps impressed with the figures of victory surrounded by strenae inscribed “Anno novo faustum felix tibi sit“ (May the new year be happy and lucky for you). The practice of sending of acknowledgement for the new year with the exchange of goodwill continued in Europe through the early days of Christianity. With the advent of printing press and its commercial use by the 18^th and 19^th centuries, the exchange of new year cards/calendars/greetings by merchants and tradesmen became common place. The introduction of penny postage and envelops in 1840 provided a convenient transmission media and the exchange of greeting card became a normal and routine feature. The modern day greeting card crystalised in 1843 when the first X-mas card with season’s greetings was designed in U.K. The commercial production of greeting cards became fully established by 1860’s.
• Though there are several means of conveying greetings, the post remains the most popular and predominant mode of transmission. In India, too, the practice of sending greetings by way of illustrated messages by post was perhaps started by the British. It has become now an established feature as in most other countries. We send greetings on occasions like Deepawali, Pongal, Durga Puja, Baisakhi, Bihu, Christmas, Id and other regional festivals.
