About : 

• Pandit Hriday Nath Kunzru was born on 1^st October, 1887 at Agra, the son of Pandit Ajudhia Nath, a top-ranking lawyer of his time and a leading figure of the early days of the Indian National Congress.
• He was educated at the University of Agra and Allahabad and at the London School of Economics.
• Under the inspiration of Gokhale, he joined the Servants of India Society. As its President for 42 years he contributed to public life, fighting against the caste system, untouchability and other social evil, supporting divorce and the succession rights of Hindu women. Interested in education, he was associated with the Universities of Allahabad and Delhi, the Banaras Hindu University, the Kashi Vidyapeeth and the Aligarh Muslim University. He established the Indian Council of World Affairs at Sapru House, New Delhi, which ran the School of International Studies, later taken over by the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
• In pre-independence politics, he was a Liberal, seeking to achieve self-government within the Commonwealth by constitutional means rather than by violent or non-violent mass agitation. He broke away from the Congress in 1920 along with other moderates to form the National Liberal Federation.
• As a member of the State and Central Legislative, he proved himself a distinguished parliamentarian. He was concerned about the Indianisation of the Civil Services and the armed forces, the treatment of Indian settlers abroad and industrialisation in the pre-independence days.
• In the post-independence period he took great interest in foreign affairs seeking genuine non-alignment. He believed in India‘s integrity based on the willing cooperation of the units. As a member of the States Reorganisation Commission he made valuable suggestions in safeguarding the interests of linguistic minorities. Critical of what he believed was an appeasement policy towards China, he advocated the building of military strength, so that India could play its proper role in world affairs.
• He did commendable work as General Secretary, Sewa Samiti, Allahabad, President of the U.P. Harijan Sewak Sangh and Chairman of the Railway Enquiry Committee. He never aspired for recognition or to any ministerial office, even declining to accept the title of Bharat Ratna. He passed away on 3^rd April, 1978.

Name :  Rukmini Devi Neelakanda Sastri

About : 

• Rukmini Devi was born on 29^th February, 1904 into a South Indian family with a tradition of culture and scholarship. Her parents were deeply influenced by the Theosophical Movement. Rukmini Devi’s own involvement with Theosophy increased with her marriage to Dr. G.S. Arundale.
• A meeting with Anna Pavlova, the famous Russian ballerina, kindled her interest in dance. Against tremendous opposition Rukmini Devi trained herself in Bharatanatyam, fired by the desire to revive this art among young people. This led in 1936 to the establishment of Kalakshetra, which has since become one of the premier institutions of India where dance, music, sculpture and the crafts are taught in a Guru-kula atmosphere. The institution under Rukmini Devi maintained the purity and beauty of the spirit embodied in the great art traditions of India, combined with the highest standards of technique and learning, preparing artistes and teachers for a cultural revival.
• In the course of this endeavour Rukmini Devi created a new genre based on old traditions – the Dance Drama. She choreographed 25 dance dramas.
• She invited Dr. Maria Montessori to India to start teachers’ training courses. Thus the first Montessori School and a teachers’ training course were established in India.
• Nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1952, she introduced the Bill for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the Parliament and the Animal Welfare Board was established with her as Chairman.
• Her efforts to educate people in many matters ranging from artistic taste to humanitarian feeling were exemplified in her involvement with the Theosophical Movement, Vegetarian Congress, Unesco work, Tibetan Relief work, the founding of the weaving department, dye research laboratory, a publication department, a Kalamkari unit, Dr. U.V. Swaminathan Iyer Library of Tamil Manuscripts etc.
• She received some of a nation’s highest honours for her multifaceted contributions, in India and abroad such as the Padma Bhushan; Fellowship of the Sangeet Natak Akademi; Queen Victoria Silver Medal of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; Deshikothama from Vishwabharathi University, Shantiniketan; Thanipperum Kalaignar award from the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Manram; and the Kalidas Samman by the Madhya Pradesh Govt. She passed away on 24^th February 1986.

• Sri Harmandir Sahib – the Golden Temple – at Amritsar is a symbol of the spiritual and historical traditions of the Sikhs. The foundation of the city of Amritsar was laid by the Fourth Sikh Guru Ram Das in 1577 and the holy tank was constructed simultaneously. The city was to derive its name later from this “Lake of Nectar“ – Amritsar. Here the followers of Guru Ram Das meditated on Hari Nam (the name of God).
• In 1588, the fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev got the foundation of Harmandir Sahib laid by Hazrat Mian Mir, a Sufi Muslim saint of Lahore. The construction of Harmandir Sahib was completed with devoted voluntary service, ‘Kar Seva‘. Believing in humility Guru Arjan Dev built the shrine, not on a high plinth, but below ground level, so that devotees had to go down to enter it. The temple was open on all four sides symbolising that the House of God was open to all devotees, irrespective of castes, creed or status.
• Guru Arjan Dev composed a number of hymns in praise of the sacred tank. He continued to uphold the ideas of Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion: spiritual unification and solidarity, love and service to all and submission to God’s will. The sacred scripture of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib, which contains the “bani“ (utterances) of the Gurus and the hymns of various saints of different creeds, was first installed in the Harmandir Sahib.
• The Harmandir Sahib was called the Golden Temple when its upper part was decorated with richly embossed gold sheets during the period of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1803 A.D. There is fine filigree and enamel work in gold decoration in the central dome of the Temple. The upper storey and the side panels contain coloured stone inlay work and several paintings. Sacred texts also decorate the interiors. Over the centuries devotees of various faiths have offered exquisite gifts which are preserved even today in the Toshakhana.

• Kashthamandap built in the popular Nepalese architectural style, stands in the heart of Kathmandu city. The capital Kathmandu is named after its name. It is also called Marusattal by the local inhabitants.
• This Mandapa is said to have been built out of a single tree in 12^th century A.D. It stands as a masterpiece of Nepalese wood-work. In the centre of this mandapa is located the image of Guru Gorakhnath and in all four corners are installed four images of Lord Ganesha, the elephant God and Son of Siva.

• Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar was born on 5^th August 1905, son of Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar a distinguished member of the Nattukkottai Nagarathar community. He studied mostly in Madras, graduating from the Presidency College in 1922. He then went to Burma on his family’s business acquiring expertise in banking.
• He became a member of Madras Legislative Council, representing the South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry with which he was associated for 50 years, and was elected its President in 1941. He was appointed member of the Provincial Banking Enquiry Commission in 1929 and of the Madras Provincial Franchise Enquiry Committee (1931). In 1929, he became a member of the Corporation of Madras and was elected Mayor in 1933 and 1934. In 1943 he was elected president of the Federation of the Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He was associated with the Imperial Bank of India (now the State Bank of India) and the Indian Bank.
  
• Interest in education was part of the family heritage. He was associated with his father in making Sri Minakshi College, Chidambaram the nucleus of a university. While pursuing his political career as Chief Whip and Legislative Assembly Chairman of the Justice Party, he retained his interest in education. In 1936 he was appointed Minister-in-charge of Education, Public Health and Excise, and was also the Pro-Chancellor of Madras University for over a year. He remained on the Board of Management of the Pachaiyappa‘s Charities for 33 years. He was also on the Syndicate of the Madras University and the Board of Management of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, for some years.
  
• In 1948 he became Pro-Chancellor of Annamalai University which expanded to include the faculties of Education, Fine Arts, Culture, Law and Medicine. Two UGC Centres of Advanced Study in Marine Biology and Linguistics came into being. The Engineering and Technology Department developed into a Post-Graduate Centre. The Muthiah Polytechnic, Annamalainagar, and the Annamalai Polytechnic, Chettinad, were established.
  
• He was interested in the study of Tamil language and literature, Tamil music and culture. His services to the cause of Tamil earned him the title of ‘Tamil Isai Kavalar‘.
  
• He earned the reputation of being a sensitive Parliamentarian, impartial and balanced, as a leader of the opposition in 1939 and when he held charge of Local Administration and Hindu Religious Endowments. He was knighted in 1941. In 1946 he was elected member of the Constituent Assembly at New Delhi.
  
• In the world of business he was an important figure, holding such positions as Chairman of Chettinad Cement Corporation Ltd., Madras, Madura Coats Ltd., Consolidated Coffee Ltd., Coorg, and Coonoor Tea Estate, Coonoor, among others.
  
• He passed away on 12^th May, 1984 in Madras, leaving an impressive record of interests and achievements.

Name : Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara

About : 

• Venerable Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born at Kainakary, Kerala on 10^th February 1806. After his schooling in the village and priestly studies under Fr. Thomas Palackal at Pallipuram, he was ordained priest in 1829.
• Along with Frs. Thomas Palackal and Thomas Porukara, he founded the first indigenous religious congregation in India for men in 1831 at Mannanam, the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate. He proved himself an able administrator as head of the CMI for 25 years. In 1866, with Fr. Leopold Beccaro, he started the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel for women.
• Interested in education, he started a Sanskrit school in 1846 and the first English School of the St. Thomas Christians in 1881, both at Mannanam. He started theological colleges for the education of priests.
• Father Chavara set up the first Catholic Press at Mannanam in 1844, from which a network of printing houses spread over the country, managed by the CMI Congregation. The congregation also manages the Malayalam daily “Deepika”. His own prolific writings, both prose and verse, bear witness to his wisdom.
• He fought for the cause of the Harijans, seeing in them the image of God. He started two schools for Harijan children and a home for the destitute.
• Amidst his diverse activities he remained essentially a man of prayer and charity.
• He died on 3^rd January, 1871, humbly professing gratitude to God that he could preserve his baptismal innocence. His mortal remains lie at his tomb in St. Joseph’s Church, CMI Monastery, Mannanam.
• Today the Congregation runs educational institutions, hospitals, dispensaries, welfare & cultural centres and printing presses. The work of the congregation is a tribute to the vision of Fr. Chavara. His Holiness Pope John Paul II conferred the formal recognition of the Church by Beatifying him on 8^th February, 1986.
