In Hindu mythology there is mention of Barahkshetra where boar-headed Lord Barah emerged to rescue the earth. They have highlighted the sanctity and religious importance of this place. It is a common belief that one who worships Lord Barah having taken a bath in the confluence of river achieves Salvation. Because of this importance millions of pilgrims even from neighbouring country congregate here. Barahkshetra occupies a prominent place from cultural and religious standpoint.

Born on Nov 10, 1848 at Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India [now Kolkata, West Bengal, India]

Died on Aug 6, 1925 at Barrackpore, Bengal Presidency, British India [now in West Bengal, India]

About :

  • Born on 10th November, 1848 as the second son of Dr. Durga Charan Banerjee in Taltala in Calcutta, Surendranath graduated in Arts in the year 1867 from Dovetan College (Calcutta) and within a couple of years qualified himself with flying colours to be admitted to the covenanted I.C.S. Cadre. He was first appointed as Assistance Magistrate in Sylhet (now in Bangladesh). On the charges levelled against him for some allegedly wrong orders passed and on the basis of a subsequent enquiry report in this regard, a condign punishment of his removal from the I.C.S. was awarded on him. This decision of then government of the country no doubt hurled upon him a great blow but this was a blessing in disguise not only for himself but for the nation as a whole. Surendranath soon recovered from the impact of this event and pledged to dedicate himself fully to the cause of national emancipation and political freedom of the country. With a missionary zeal, he undertook extensive tours, organised meetings all over the country, exhorted and upheld before the teeming millions of people of the country, the baneful effects of the British Rule in India in his speeches with his usual oratory skill, which in effect moulded the rhetoric of the nation. Bewildered, the foreign Rulers lost no time to put him to imprisonment. Released from prison in course of time, Surendranath built up a movement in quick succession for creation of a National Fund and in a meeting held on 17th July, 1883, such a Fund was ushered into existence, with a view to securing and espousing the cause of political freedom of the country and that too, only through constitutional means. Subsequent endeavours made in this regard resulted in a national conference held in Calcutta with the representatives of the people from all corners of the country and heralded the beginning of a new era in the sphere of National struggle. Inspired by his clarion call the multi-religious and caste-ridden people of all over India, soon developed a spirit of oneness and cohesion and this ultimately paved the way towards foundation of the Indian National Congress in the year 1885. Thus Surendranath, once a servant of British Crown, was soon acknowledged as a great “Savant” in the struggle for freedom, a leading statesman and a friend, philosopher and guide to the people of India.
  • The agitation he built up against the “Ilbert Bill” and the partition of Bengal announced by Lord Curzon projected a united and determined protest in the entire country and made him the uncrowned king of Bengal. In protest against the move, sponsored by the British Government, to deprive the rights of Self Government exercised by the Corporation of Calcutta, of which Surendranath was a member for years together, he resigned in the year 1899 and determined to restore “Self Government” in the Corporation of Calcutta. He succeeded in his endeavours more than a couple of decades afterwards and the Corporation of Calcutta of the present day is practically his creation.
  • In the literary field, as a great Journalist and Editor of the Journal, “The Bengalee” and as author of the famous Book “A nation in Making“, Surendranath earned “Laurels” of unique distinction and was named as “The Tribune of the people“.
  • Surendranath breathed his last on 6th August, 1925.

Born on Dec 3, 1882 at Kharagpur, Munger, Bengal Presidency, British India [now in Bihar]

Died on Apr 16, 1966 at Calcutta, West Bengal, India

About :

  • Born on December 3, 1882, the son of Purnachandra Bose and Kshetramani DeviNandalal had an innate inclination towards art. Therefore, after his preliminary school education, his parents consented to let him enrol at the College of Art, Calcutta in 1905. He was fortunate to receive the guidance from Abanindranath Tagore who, at that time, was the Vice-Principal. While studying in the College of Art, he won a scholarship, and in 1908 also a prize for his painting Sati Mounting the Pyre. Since then his artistic pursuits and success became companions, providing him respect, admiration and all sorts of worldly and spiritual honours.
  • He joined the team of Lady Herringham and assisted in making copies of Ajanta paintings in 1910-11; this brought him into close contact with the greatest masterpieces of Indian art.
  • As soon as he finished his college education, the Principal, Percy Brown, invited him to teach at the College of Art; instead he preferred to avail of the facilities to work at Jorasanko offered by Abanindranath Tagore where he came into contact with Ananda Coomaraswami, Sister Nivedita, Okakura and Rabindranath Tagore whose literary manifestations he enjoyed illustrating for years to come. At his insistence, Nandalal joined the Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan in 1920, and remained its Principal until he retired in 1951.
  • He was nationalistic to the core and his mature art style constituted traditional, decorative, ornamental and narrative elements, improvised and visually manifested through the linear rhythm, movement, structure and form and, by and large, sombre colours having typical oriental flavour.
  • He painted several mythological themes; initially some in the wash technique, to be followed by or simultaneously in tempera and, eventually, adopting or incorporating them in some of his large murals and frescoes. Gradually, his interest widened. Almost every aspect of nature and humble life around attracted him. The influence of Mahatma Gandhi also played an important role. In 1935 he organised an exhibition at the Lucknow session of the Indian National Congress and decorated the Congress Pandals at Faizpur (1937) and Haripura (1937-38) sessions and also painted the famous Haripura Posters.
  • His attitude towards his students was very kind and affectionate, advising them to rely on their own inclinations and follow their own path.
  • He wrote several articles which constitute the crux of his aesthetic theories and several universities and art institutions awarded him honorary D. Litt. degrees, medals and fellowships. From the Government of India he received the Padma Vibhushan.
  • In substance, the vision of Nandalal Bose, who according to a rough estimate, created about ten thousand works of art – including paintings, water colours, drawings, sumies and graphics etc. – was cosmic, and he was completely devoted to his art. Thus, he was both a Silpi-Yogi and also a Karma-Yogi. He died on April 16, 1966.

About :

  • The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of independent nations. Its members are pledged to consult together and to cooperate in the common interest of their peoples and in the promotion of international understanding and world peace.
  • The Commonwealth consists of one quarter of the people and countries in the world. It draws its membership from all continents and embraces many races, religions and languages. The member countries display every stage of economic development from poor developing nations to wealthy industrialised nations.
  • Yet the Commonwealth is one of the strongest voluntary international groupings in the world. The association draws its strength from vital principles of partnership, equality and multiracialism which reflect its origin in the movement of decolonisation.
  • The summit of all Commonwealth activities is the meeting of Heads of Commonwealth Governments at two-yearly intervals. Through these meetings they have worked to advance cooperative programmes to fight poverty, combat racism and generate world peace. The Heads of Government have spelt out the beliefs which underline all their actions in two declarations, the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles (1971) and the Lusaka Declaration on Racism and Racial Prejudice (1979).
  • Commonwealth leaders have also used these meetings to set up a number of technical programmes through which member countries pool their experience to improve standards in agriculture, education, health and many other fields. The Commonwealth Secretariat located in London administers these programmes. They have also founded the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation through which experts are sent to work in member countries.
  • Commonwealth summits may be held in any Commonwealth country. The last six venues have been Singapore (1971), Ottawa (1973), Kingston (1975), London (1977), Lusaka (1979) and Melbourne (1981). New Delhi is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November, 1983.

About :

  • Project Tiger is not just a programme for protecting the tiger. It cannot be, because it seeks to protect the tiger in its natural environment. Tiger depends for food on herbivores like the deer who sustain upon plants. The plants depend upon soil, which is formed and nursed by the decay of animal and plant residues. Countless insects and micro-organisms participate in this process of decay. Further, all plants and animals from elephant to bacteria must have water. Perennial availability of water, however, depends upon good vegetative cover in the river catchments, because plants not only bind the soil by their roots but also contribute ‘humus‘ to it, which makes it fertile and porous. As rain water seeps through the porous soil it gets trapped in rock cavities and accounts for the dry season discharge in streams and wells. So, in order to protect the tiger in its natural environment, comprehensive protection of the wilderness is essential. This precisely is the thrust of Project Tiger.
  • From the cold high altitude forests to the steaming coastal mangroves of Sunder-bans, from the scorched arids of the west to the lush evergreens in the south and from the terai swamps to the peninsular high lands, the striped feline is very much at home. Indeed, therefore, the well being of tiger in the Indian forests can be taken as an index of the ecological health of our wilderness. Moreover, because wilderness qualitatively and quantitatively safeguards the life support systems e.g. soil, water and air, the status of the tiger can also be correlated to the quality of human environment. This wide distribution and its special position in nature, have earned it the status of the national animal.
  • The launching of Project Tiger in 1973 was a recognition of this adversity and of the needs to take up remedial action. A decade of experience of the Project has proved how a sincere field conservation effort can quickly help nature heal its scars. It has also shown that with a perceptive approach such a restrictive programme can also secure the involvement of the communities who must curtail and regulate their uses of forests for conversation.
  • The Project has grown from 9 tiger reserves in 1973-74 to 15 in 1982-83. It now encompasses some 25,700 sq. km. with a core segment of 8000 sq. km. free from all exploitative human use. The striking revival of ecosystems in the reserves is easily seen from a comparison of the reserves with their still depleting surrounds. The number of tigers has itself gone up from 268 in 9 reserves in 1972 to 854 in 11 reserves in 1983. With 4 new reserves, the population in the Project areas now stands at 978. All India censuses of 1972 and 1979 reveal an increase in the country population of tigers from 1827 to 3015.

About :

  • Balloons were used in man’s first successful attempts at flying. In 1783, Joseph & Jacques Etienne Montgolfier brothers, French paper manufacturers at Annonay, France, discovered that a fabric bag filled with hot air would rise. On June 5 of that year, they launched the first balloon flight in history, unmanned. The craft carried about a mile and a half away. At Versailles, they repeated the experiment, with a larger balloon on Sept. 19, 1783, sending a sheep, a rooster and a duck aloft as the first air passengers. On Nov. 21, the first manned flight took place when JeanFrancois Pilatre de Rozier and Francois laurent, marquis d’ Arlandes, sailed over Paris, covering 5½ miles in about 23 minutes.
  • Balloons have proved enormously valuable in meteorology and other sciences. Balloons have played an important role during the war time for taking a view of enemy’s army, works etc. to that of sending signals. Balloons were also used for the first time in history to transport mail by air in as early as 1808, in Denmark. First balloon flight has led to the flights to the moon and the stars.
  • Ballooning in India dates back to as early as 1877, when Mr. Joseph Lynn made several flights in a gas balloon in Bombay and later in 1889 when Mr. Percivial Spencer made an ascent in his balloon ‘Empress of India’ from the Race Course in Calcutta. But hot air ballooning in India developed and continued only after the persistent efforts of Shri Vishwa Bandhu Gupta when the ‘Ballooning Club of India’ was founded on 23rd November 1970, by the American Astronaut Neil Armstrong. The Indian Balloon team led by Shri Gupta, participated in the world hot air balloon championships, at Nantes, France, for the first time in 1983.

Name : Vinayak Narahari Bhave

Born on Sep 11, 1895 at Gagode, Raigad, Maharashtra, India

Died on Nov 15, 1982 at Paunar, Wardha, Maharashtra, India

About :

  • Vinayak Narahari Bhave, commonly known as Vinoba, was born at Ganoda in Maharashtra, on 11 September, 1895. Educated at Baroda in the Government High School, he was a brilliant student, but he soon lost interest in conventional studies. He passed the Matriculation examination in 1913 and was due to appear for the Intermediate examination in 1916 for which he had to go to Bombay. Instead of going to Bombay, he detrained at Surat and proceeded to Banaras, where he studied Sanskrit and became proficient in all Hindu scriptural books. He was a self-taught multi-linguist.
  • After Gandhiji’s return from South Africa early in 1915, Vinoba recognised in him the kindred-most of spirits and requested him to adopt himself as his spiritual son in 1916. In 1921, Jamnalal Bajaj requested Gandhiji to give him his best and most trusted lieutenant at Sabarmati Ashram to be sent to Wardha to start a similar Ashram. Gandhiji sent Vinoba. Jamanalal placed his whole family under his charge. Speaking about Vinoba, Gandhiji said, “He is one of the Ashram’s rare pearls – one of those who have come not to be blessed but to bless, not to receive but to give“.
  • Vinoba lived in accordance with the eleven vows, included in Gandhian daily prayer, viz. non-violence, truthfulness, absolute honesty, chastity, poverty, manual work, temperance, fearlessness, respect for all religions, independence in the matter of money and non-recognition of cast distinctions. At the Ashram, he took up scavenging work and had “no trace of untouchability left in his heart“.
  • He was one of the moving spirits of the Nagpur Flag Satyagraha, his companions being Jamanalal Bajaj, Bhagwan Deen and Nilkanthrao Deshmukh. In 1924, Gandhiji sent Vinoba to Guruvayur (Kerala) to participate in the Harijan Temple Entry Satyagraha. He participated in the famous ‘Dandi March‘ for Salt Satyagraha in 1930, for which he was again sent to prison.
  • In April, 1951, he started the Bhoodan Movement, with a view to bringing about fundamental social and economical changes in society by peaceful means. The movement began by way of gifts of lands to be distributed among the landless, later developing into voluntary renunciation of ownership of land in favour of village communities – Gramdan. More than four million acres of land were collected in Bhoodan and 18,000 villages had been declared Gramdan or common ownership within 15 years of the launching of the movement.
  • Vinoba wanted each village to be self-sufficient in food and clothing. His creed was, “Now that political freedom has been attained, we have to work for the establishment of equality. I have called that ‘Sarvodaya’. It is for the establishment of this that I am going from village to village“.
  • On the pattern of Gandhi‘s Ashram at Sabarmati, Acharya Vinoba Bhave started his own Ashram at Paunar, near Wardha, where he continued to stay till his death on 15th November, 1982.
