About :

  • India and Pakistan jointly initiated the move to have a hockey competition at world level outside the Olympic tournament. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) approved the holding of such games and the World Cup Hockey Tournament thus started from 1971.
  • Pakistan donated a trophy for this competition. The gold and silver trophy comprises a silver cup, carrying an intricate floral design, surmounted by a globe in silver and gold depicting the world, carrying on top of it a ball and hockey stick, perfect in design and symmetry. The current value of the trophy could be in the region of Rs. 20,00,000.
  • Spain hosted the inaugural World Cup Hockey Tournament in Barcelona in 1971. Ten nations qualified for the competition which was spread over ten days (October 15-24). The semi-finals were played in Tarrasa, the birth place of Spanish Hockey. Pakistan emerged as the champions with a one-nil victory over Spain, who beat them 3-2 in a pool match. India won the bronze medal.
  • The Second World Cup was held in Amsterdam from August 24 to September 2, 1973. Hosts Holland prevailed over two-up India in the tie-breaker of an exciting final. West Germany beat Pakistan by a solitary goal to finish third.
  • India was originally scheduled to host the Third Cup in Bombay in 1975. But the FIH, at its meeting in Cannes (France), decided to shift the venue to Kuala Lumpur. Skipper Ajitpal Singh masterminded a memorable rally for one-down India to triumph over Pakistan by the odd goal of three in a nail-biting final that was a real hockey classic.
  • The host nation does not automatically qualify for the World Cup. A concession was made in the case of Argentina and the Fourth World Cup in Buenos Aires in 1977 was enlarged to include fourteen nations. India fared disastrously and finished sixth. Pakistan regained the gold medal. Holland took the silver and Australia the bronze.
  • The first nine teams in Buenos Aires automatically qualified for the Fifth World Cup to be staged in Bombay from December 29, 1981 to January 12, 1982. The first three nations in the Inter-Continent Cup, held in Kuala Lumpur earlier in the year, made up the twelve participants. They are the USSR, Malaysia and New Zealand, Olympic Champions in Montreal in 1976.
  • The World Cup is now held every four years. The FIH had decided that in future the first six teams in the previous World Cup will automatically qualify for the next competition. The remaining places will be filled by the first six teams in the Inter-Continent Cup.
  • The twelve participating nations are split into two pools. The pool matches are played on a league basis. The winners and runners-up of each pool meet in cross playoffs in the semi-finals. The winners battle for the gold; the losers for the bronze. Cross play-offs in groups of four determine the minor placings.

About :

  • From time immemorial men have sailed the lonely seas. As new lands were discovered and colonised, the frontiers of commerce expanded. But the sea proved an effective barrier to transmission of messages with expedition till telegraph was invented in 1837. With innovations in telecommunications technology, the first submarine telegraph cable (with only one circuit) was laid across the English Channel between England and France in 1850. The first submarine telephone cable was also laid between England and France in 1891. The first submarine cable with more than one circuit was laid between the Netherlands and Denmark in 1950. Its circuit capacity was 36. The longest submarine cable link is between Europe and the United States spanning the Atlantic Ocean. It is 3400 nautical miles long and has the highest number of circuits, viz. 4000 voice-grade telephone circuits. At present, there are about 195 submarine cable links in the world stretching across 142 thousand nautical miles with a total of about 136400 circuits.
  • As a result of advances in submarine cable technology, there has been an upsurge in such cable systems all over the world. The modern wide-band submarine cable system provides a desirable complimentary medium to other communication systems involving wireless and satellite. The global wide-band, high-capacity submarine telephone cable network terminated at Singapore in the East and did not extend in to the Indian Ocean Region. There were, however, slow speed telegraph cables in the region which had become obsolete and were abandoned.
  • The seven Commonwealth Countries of India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and Canada joined hands to lay the cable system across the Indian Ocean between Madras and Penang (Malaysia). The 1350 nautical mile long, Indian Ocean Commonwealth Cable (IOCOM) has a capacity of 480 high grade telephone circuits with provisions for further expansion. IOCOM links India, for the first time, with the international submarine telephone cable network.
  • The cable was laid by a special cable-laying ship from Marina Beach at Madras to Kuala Muda near Penang in Malaysia. A gateway complex at Madras housed the cable terminal equipments, telephone and telex gateway exchanges and other international telecommunication facilities. The total capital cost of the submerged cable system and terminal gateway complex was about Rs. 30 crores.

Name : Enric Heras de Sicars

Born on Sep 11, 1888 at Barcelona, Spain

Died on Dec 14, 1955 at Mumbai, India

About :

  • Henry Heras was born in Barcelona, Spain, on 11 September 1888, and did his early studies in that city. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1904, and was ordained priest in 1920. In October 1922 he came to India, and was assigned to St. Xavier’s College, Bombay.
  • Fr. Heras was keen to investigate the treasures of Indian history and culture, and at the same time sharply aware of the need to train historiographers. He got his research students interested in similar themes, composing for them a masterly little treatise on The Writing of History. In 1926 he launched the Indian Historical Institute, which was to produce a galaxy of historians and indologists, and was later to be named after him the “Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture”.
  • His early work was in Mughal history and Jesuit sources. His first major historical work was on The Aravidu Dynasty of Vijayanagara (1927). Around 1935 Fr. Heras became interested in the discoveries at Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, and soon all his attention was centered on the problem of deciphering the Indus Valley script. This led to numerous monographs, culminating in his magnum opus, Studied in ProtoIndoMediterranean Culture (1955). In this pioneering work he put forward the view that the language of the Indus Valley was proto-Dravidian, ancestor of modern Tamil. He also investigated into the relation between the Indus Valley civilisation and the other ancient civilisations of Sumer, Egypt and the Mediterranean.
  • Besides building up the Indian Historical Research Institute, with its excellent library and museum, at St. Xavier’s College, Fr. Heras was also a founder of the Bombay Historical Society. He was an active member of the Indian Historical Records Commission, the Indian History Congress and the International Congress of Historical Sciences.
  • His identification with India was total, and on the establishment of the Republic he became an Indian citizen. Fr. Heras was a painstaking researcher with deep fund of knowledge and passion for objectivity. He was far ahead of his times in his interpretation and appreciation of culture of the land of his adoption. He did much to render Christian themes through Indian symbols and styles of art. He encouraged and inspired young artists, and presented their work in exhibitions in Bombay, Rome, Madrid and Lisbon, meriting the title of “Father of Indian Christian Art”. He passed away in Bombay on 14 December 1955.

About :

  • India‘s seafaring traditions have roots in its ancient civilisation. The seals portraying anchors, tools and kitchen implements made of coral and mussel shell, discovered during excavations at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, bear testimony that Indians were master seafarers as early as five millennia ago. Buddhist inscriptions in Pali and Sanskrit as well as coins and temples in some countries on the Indian Ocean littoral establish that Indians Sailed the seas regularly for commercial and cultural exchanges. In the most recent times, the European Maritime powers were given a stiff battle by the Navy as it existed then under the great Admiral Kanhoji AngreDuring the first and second world wars, the ships of the Navy served with distinction in different oceans of the world. The sinking of a heavily armed Japanese ship by HMIS Bengal in the Indian Ocean in 1942 was a daring feat.
  • The Indian Navy as it exists today, is a manifestation of our ancient maritime heritage and aspirations. The fleets are composed of some of the most modern ships with sophisticated weaponry. It is a hard hitting force fully capable of annihilating threats from the air, on the surface and below the surface of the seas. The complete supremacy of the Indian Navy in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during 1971 operations was a unique achievement.
  • The seas around have always been important to India for its security and prosperity. India occupies a strategic position in the Indian Ocean. The discovery of oil off India‘s coast is very promising. Our exclusive economic zone abounds in sea food and may also have the much needed minerals. The seas hold the key for improving the quality of life of Indian people in the feature. The role of the Indian Navy in safeguarding the national interests and economic growth will thus become all the more important and have a direct being on India‘s strength and economic well-being of its people.
  • The Indian Navy face the future with confidence. It is becoming increasingly self reliant with warships being built by Indian shipyards. Its personnel are drawn from all corners of the country, from all religions, castes and creeds. They are steadfast in their resolve to meet all challenges, be it an enemy attack during war or rushing aid to civil power during natural calamities and accidents. They train hard and work with a spirit of dedication to make India a great maritime nation.

About :

  • The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is organised each year on November 29 recognising the need for the greatest possible dissemination of information on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and on the efforts of the international community to promote attainment of these rights. The celebration attracts and focuses world attention on the struggle of the Palestinian people and demonstrates international solidarity with their cause.
  • The Palestinian people are inheritors of one of the world’s oldest civilisations. In fact, the name Palestine derives from ‘Philistines’ – one of the three peoples that inhabited the ancient land of Canaan more than 4,000 years ago. However, beginning in the last quarter of the 19th century, due to the direct collusion between the forces of imperialism and zionism, a concerted attempt was made to carve out a Jewish State from Palestinian territory. This culminated in the formation of Israel on May 15, 1948.
  • Since the days of our freedom struggle, India has had strong emotional ties with the Palestinian people. After independence, India has, on innumerable occasions, denounced the denial of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people in many forums, including the United Nations and campaigned for their cause. In 1980, India accorded diplomatic status to the Palestine Liberation Organisation which is the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestine people. In 1980 also, the Chairman of the PLO, Mr. Yasser Arafat, visited India. In supporting the Palestine struggle, India stands tied to the principles and ideals which have been the vital part of our own ethos.
  • The Palestinians are now a people in exile. But they are by no means bereft of hope. Under the leadership of the PLO, they are firm in their resolve to recover their legitimate and inalienable rights. The fulfilment of their aspirations is only a matter of time.

Design :

(A) Portrait of Reiko (Property of Tokyo National Museum)

Ryusei Kishida (1891-1929) was born in Tokyo and while displaying his works at the fourth Nika exhibit in 1917 he won the Nika Prize. Starting the subsequent year, he painted portraits using his oldest daughter Reiko as a model, in various positions, until his death.

Portrait of Reiko, which is the design of the stamp, is said to be an especially excellent work among the many paintings made of Reiko. Kishido’s Reiko at Sumiyoshi Shrine was chosen as a design for Philately Week in 1973.

(B) Portrait of Ichiyo (Property of the Art Materials Hall, Tokyo University of Arts)

Kiyokata Kaburagi (1878-1972) was born in Tokyo and, along with Shoen Uemura, was a modern Japanese master of painting beautiful women. We displayed many masterpieces at exhibits of the Imperial Academy and Ministry of Education, receiving the Order of Cultural Merit in 1954.

Portrait of Ichiyo is a work finished in 1940 and is a hanging scroll. Among his representative works are “Sanyutei Encho” and “Tsukiji Akashi-cho” which was selected for stamp design for Philately Week 1971.

About :

  • Kashi Prasad Jayaswal was born in Mirzapur (U.P.) on 27 November 1881. After post-graduation from Allahabad University he entered Oxford University for further studies. He was called to the Bar of the Lincoln‘s Inn, London after a distinguished career at Oxford culminating in his being conferred the degree of M.A. in Ancient Indian History. At Jesus College, Oxford he was awarded the Davis Chinese Scholarship for 1909. On his return to India, he set up practice at the Calcutta High Court. While at Calcutta he came into contact with Sir Ashutosh Mookherjee, then Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University. Sir Ashutosh inspired him to undertake extensive research in Ancient Indian History.
  • Shri Jayaswal devoted more of his time to historical research than to legal practice. He first came to prominence with his articles on ‘Hindu Polity‘ published in the ‘Modern Review‘ in 1913, which shed a completely new light on ancient Indian history. His ‘Tagore Law Lectures’ at the Calcutta University on Hindu Law according to Manu and Yajnavalkya drew critical acclaim. His monumental work ‘History of India 150 AD to 350 AD‘ supplemented by his work on Indian History from c. 700 BC to 770 AD illuminated many a dark period in Indian History.
  • With the setting up of a High Court in Bihar in 1916 he shifted his legal practice to Patna. However, being a devoted Indologist he took active part in excavating, restoring and preserving ancient relics of India‘s cultural heritage. A large number of valuable vestiges which he salvaged are in the Patna Museum. He also collected Sanskrit manuscripts, and edited and published a descriptive catalogue of such manuscripts. He was a multi-faceted genius. A distinguished lawyer and eminent historian, he also possessed a deep knowledge of Numismatics, and had an extraordinary proficiency in deciphering ancient scripts. His deciphering of ‘Hathi-Gumpha‘ inscription of Emperor Kharavela (c. 173-160 BC) is a landmark. His remarkable discovery and study of a large number of coins of Maurya and Gupta periods led to his being the first Indian to be invited to speak to the Royal Asiatic Society of London in 1931.
  • He was twice elected president of Numismatic Society of India (1934 and 1936) and of All India Oriental Conference (1933). He was also closely associated with Bihar & Orissa Research Society and the Patna Museum since their inception. Benares Hindu University and Patna University honoured him with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa). He died on 4 August 1937 in Patna.
