About : 

• Kamta Prasad Guru was born on December 25, 1875 in Sagar (Madhya Pradesh). From the very beginning of his career he had great liking and aptitude for language and literature. After passing the matriculation examination at the age of 17, he joined the Education Department as an Assistant Master and retired from the Government Service as a teacher in 1928. Kamta Prasad Guru served the cause of Hindi literature in its varied branches. He was a close friend of Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi at whose request he assumed the editorship of the well-known Hindi monthly magazine ‘Saraswati‘ and the children’s magazine ‘Balasakha‘ for a brief spell. Most of his famous poems, essays and articles were published in ‘Saraswati‘. Among his published works, Sudarshan (drama), Satya–Prem (short novel), Parvati aur Yashoda (translation from Oriya) and Hindustani Shishtachar deserve special mention. However, the literary fame of Kamta Prasad Guru rest on his immortal work in the field of Hindi grammar. He is called the ‘Panini of Hindi‘. He worked for several years to complete the great task of compiling this magnum opus on Hindi Grammar. For a comparative study of grammars of other Indian languages, he studied and mastered Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Urdu and English. His Hindi grammar has also been translated into foreign languages.
• Kamta Prasad Guru died in Jabalpur on November 16, 1947.

• On the recommendation of the International League against Rheumatism (ILAR) the World Health Organisation have nominated 1977 as the World Rheumatism Year. The objective of the year is to promote a comprehensive concern for the whole individual and for the physical, psychological and social impact of rheumatic diseases by involving all professional, health and welfare agencies and the community at large in the following specific aims :–
  • (i) To promote increased knowledge, understanding and concern for the nature and scope of rheumatic diseases;
  • (ii) to stimulate improvement in the availability and quality of treatment and care offered to rheumatic sufferers;
  • (iii) to promote research activities in the field with a view to improving the standard of treatment and care.

Factory doctors everywhere know too well how much absenteeism results from back troubles and soft tissue rheumatism. • At the invitation of the Government of India, the International Statistical Institute (ISI) was holding its 41^st Session at New Delhi from December 5 to 15, 1977. This is the Second time that the ISI is holding one or its biennial sessions in India. Such an honour, shared by a very few countries, indicates the international recognition accorded to Indian contributions to statistics.
• The ISI was founded in 1885 as an international association for securing international comparability of statistical data. Since then its aims have widened considerably to ‘promoting the use of statistical methods, the training of statisticians, the encouraging of statistical research,….and in the furthering of international statistical relations.’
• Its present membership, including three specialized sections, consists of about 2000 statisticians from 125 countries. About 800 delegates were expected to participate in the Delhi Session.

Name : Pandurang Mahadev Bapat

About : 

• Pandurang Mahadev Bapat, popularly known as ‘Senapati Bapat‘ – owing to his revolutionary role in freedom struggle – was born on November 12, 1880 in Parner (Maharashtra). He had a brilliant academic career and after graduation proceeded to England for studies in Engineering on a scholarship. He campaigned in England for India‘s independence and these activities led to the Bombay University withdrawing the scholarship.
• Bapat returned to India in 1908 and went to Calcutta to meet the Maniktola group of revolutionaries in Bengal. Later he went underground for four years to avoid arrest in the Maniktola Bomb case.
• From 1913 to 1920, Bapat engaged himself in social work. He took an active part in politics and was the sub-editor of Lokmanya Tilak‘s ‘Maratha‘.
• Bapat‘s life was a saga of struggle and suffering. In 1921, he led the famous ‘Mulshi Satyagraha‘. The movement was so revolutionary that it earned him the title ‘Senapati‘. He spent nearly two decades in prison for his part in the freedom struggle.
• After independence, Bapat played a significant role in the struggle for Samyukta Maharashtra and took part in the Goa liberation movement.
• Senapati Bapat was also an erudite scholar. His published works include commentaries on Bhagwat Gita and the Upanishads and translations from Sri Aurobindo.
• Bapat died on November 28, 1967.

About : 

• Jotirao Phooley was born in Pune in 1827 in a poor peasant family. His father was Govindrao and mother Chimnabai. Jotirao began his studies at the age of seven in Marathi school and later went to a Scottish Mission School where he completed his studies in 1847.
• The young Jotirao was full of energy, spirit and ambition. He read avidly about the lives of Shivaji and George Washington and was inspired by their heroism and love for the motherland. Another great influence on Jotirao was the book ‘Rights of Man‘ by Thomas Paine. He decided to devote his life to the task of helping the down trodden to break their shackles of bondage.
• In 1848 Phooley started a school the doors of which he threw open to the ‘untouchables’ and a Girls’ School despite much opposition from certain quarters.
• Jotirao carried on a crusade against caste system. In 1873 he founded Satya-Shodhak Samaj for spreading the message of emancipation of exploited masses and the weaker sex. Phooley also laboured for the amelioration of the lot of Indian peasants. He firmly believed in the axiom ‘Truth Alone Triumphs‘.
• Jotirao Phooley died on November 28, 1890.

• Every year millions of Muslims from all over the world congregate in the House of God in the Holy City of Mecca, and bivouac in the valley of Mina and the plain of Arafat to perform Haj. The duty of Haj was imposed upon the Muslims to confirm the worship of one God and to attach them to this one Centre where they are required to assembled annually and perform the Circuit round the Holy Kaba clad in the simple pilgrim’s garb and mix together without any distinction of nationality, race, colour or status. The annual pilgrimage is thus a visible manifestation of the universal brotherhood of Islam.
• During the performance of the various rituals of Haj, a pilgrim gives up his regular work, forgoes amenities and sacrifices the comforts of life. He puts on the simplest unstitched dress called ‘Ahram‘ avoids all indecent thoughts and acts and strives whole-heartedly towards the ideals laid down in Islam – complete surrender to the will of God and a glowing consciousness that his prayers and sacrifices, his life and death are all for God. He runs between Safa and Marwa and like a moth whirling round a flame runs round the Holy Kaba.
