About : 

• ‘Vande Mataram‘, the immortal song composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, is more than a hundred years old. Though it first appeared in the first instalment of serialisation of Bankim Chandra‘s Bengali novel, Anand Math, in 1881, there is clear evidence to show that it was composed independently earlier in 1875. Writing in the English Daily, ‘Bande Mataram‘, on 16^th April, 1907, Sri Aurobindo said: “It was 32 years ago that Bankim wrote his great song….“.
• In his novel Anand Math, Bankim Chandra wrote about Sanyasis who left their hearths and homes and dedicated their lives to the cause of their motherland. The characters in his novel personified the motherland as the Mother Goddess and worshipped her as such. They knew no other deity excepting the motherland and no other religion excepting the religion of patriotism. This spirit was reflected in the song ‘Vande Mataram‘. According to Sri Aurobindo, Bankim Chandra perceived three main elements which constituted the moral strength so necessary for serving the motherland. They were firstly Tyaga or complete self-sacrifice, secondly self-discipline and organisation and thirdly patriotism itself as religion. These ideas found perfect lyrical expression in the great song which enthused and activated millions of people during the freedom struggle. The song aroused the spirit of intense nationalism.
• While the Song became the anthem of resurgent Indian nationalism, its title ‘Vande Mataram‘ (meaning, I bow to thee, Mother) became the battle cry of freedom fighters all over the country. Rabindranath Tagore set the song to music and sang it at the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress. He did so again at the Calcutta session of the Congress in 1906.
• The impact of the song over the people was so much that the then alien rulers were alarmed. They resorted to repressive measures and prohibited the shouting of ‘Vande Mataram‘ in schools, colleges and public places. At thousands of places throughout the length and breadth of the then undivided India, people were beaten up and jailed by the authorities just for shouting ‘Vande Mataram‘. The fame of the song spread abroad also. When Gopal Krishna Gokhale visited South Africa in 1912, a mammoth gathering greeted him at Capetown with the slogan ‘Vande Mataram‘.
• Referring to the ‘Vande Mataram‘ song Mahatma Gandhi wrote in the Harijan in July 1939 :
  “It is enthroned in the hearts of millions. It stirs to its depth the patriotism of millions in and outside Bengal. Its chosen stanzas are Bengal‘s gift among many others to the whole nation…“
• In August 1948 Jawaharlal Nehru said in a statement made in Parliament :
  “Vande Mataram is obviously and indisputably the premier national song of India with a great historical tradition; it was intimately connected with our struggle for freedom. That position, it is bound to retain and no other song can displace it. It represents the passion and poignancy of that struggle….“
• At the time of constitution-making, although Rabindranath Tagore‘s song, Jana-gana-mana, was adopted as the national anthem of independent India, Vande Mataram was given an equal status with Jana-gana-mana.
• The following is the text of the first stanza of the Vande Mataram song :
  Vande Mataram;
  Sujalam, suphalam, malayajashitalam,
  Sasyashyamalam, mataram,
  Shubhrajyotsna pulakitayaminim,
  Phullakusumita drumadala shobhinim,
  Suhasinim sumadhura bhashinim,
  Sukhadam, varadam, Mataram!
• The English translation of the stanza by Sri Aurobindo is :
  I bow to thee, Mother,
  richly-watered, richly-fruited,
  cool with the winds of the south,
  dark with the crops of the harvests,
  the Mother!
  Her nights rejoicing in the glory of the moonlight,
  her lands clothed beautifully with her trees in flowering bloom,
  sweet of laughter, sweet of speech,
  the Mother, giver of boons, giver of bliss!

• Literary classics of India have rightly termed the coconut tree as Kalpavriksha – the all-giving tree. It is also one of the five legendary Devavrikshas or Godly trees. The tree is capable of providing all the primary needs of man. It is one of the most important tree crops of the world and the most beautiful among the palms with its strong and long ringed trunk (up to 30 metres) surmounted at the top by a graceful crown of giant feather-like leaves.
• Every part of the tree finds a variety of uses for mankind. Oil is extracted from the dried kernel of the fruits. The kernel itself is used in an array of culinary preparations. The oil is not only a wholesome cooking medium but also has many other uses – in the manufacture of soaps, detergents, synthetic rubber, glycerine, etc. Coconut water is a delicious and nutritive drink. The tender kernel is a delicacy. The fibre from the husk has versatile uses for making ropes, mats, baskets, brushes, brooms,etc., and also for rubberised mattresses. The young inflorescence when tapped gives a sap which is a refreshing beverage when fresh, and on fermentation it gives toddy, a mild alcoholic drink. From the fresh sap sugar is also made. The shell finds varied usages, as fuel, drinking bowls, ladles, bangles, buttons, etc. The trunk of the palm is used as building material in almost all countries in the Tropics and is popularly called ‘porcupine wood‘. The mature leaves are plaited and used in thatching and basketry.
• In terms of geographical distribution coconut ranks first among the oil yielding crops as it is grown in as many as 76 developing countries. Interestingly, India‘s State ‘Kerala‘ literally means the land of coconuts. In this State with an area of 38,864 sq. km. and a population density of 549 persons per sq.km., a large percentage of the population is dependent on coconut for their livelihood. Currently the country produces 5361 million nuts annually from 1.1 million hectares of coconut plantations. Coconut contributes 1 per cent of the GNP and 2 per cent of the total agricultural income of India which ranks third in the world production of coconut.
• India was the first country to take up systematic research on coconut. Research work was started at Kasaragod and Nileshwar stations of the then Madras Presidency (now in Kerala State) in 1916. The Nileshwar station is now part of the Kerala Agricultural University. The Kasaragod station is the headquarters of the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research since 1970. These centres are still among the leading coconut research centres of the world. Evolution of high and early bearing hybrids, development of coconut-based products management practices and cropping system and control of pests and diseases are notable achievements of research during the last six decades. The root wilt of coconut is a serious problem which is yet to be remedied and concerted efforts are under way to tackle this problem.
• This year marked the Diamond Jubilee of research on coconut. As part of the celebrations, an International Symposium on coconut was also organised at Kasaragod.

• “Child is the father of man” says an old proverb. Childhood is the most impressionable age. It is at this stage of life that the bases of responsible adulthood are laid. No nation can afford to loose sight of the most important requirement of this stage – the acquisition of knowledge by the inquisitive child who has an insatiable craving for learning more and more about the world. Books play as important a role in dissemination of knowledge among the children as among the adults. The educational importance of children’s literature cannot, therefore, be over-emphasised. The type of books a child reads goes a long way in conditioning his mental attitude and behaviour in adult life. An increase in the production of children’s literature as well as a careful watch over their content is necessary. As has repeatedly been stressed by specialists in the field, children’s books must be conceived in terms of the young readers’ own universe so that he can understand his own socio-cultural environment. In Pakistan, however, as in other developing countries children’s literature was more or less confined only to fairy-tales. No organised effort was made to prepare and publish books for the citizens of tomorrow till 1973. It was then that the Government-sponsored’ ‘National Book Foundation’ under-took preparation and circulation of books for children on a mass scale. Subjects of interest to the child were picked up and in its First Book Probe the Foundation printed 6,000 copies each on 19 titles.
• For the first time the children in Pakistan had books, written in their own national language, which were well written, beautifully illustrated and highly informative. The Second Book Probe launched in 1974-75 consisted of 52 titles and a print run from 86,000 to 1,93,000. The Second Probe included a Children’s encyclopedia – the first of its kind in Urdu with over 450 illustrations, more than half of which are in colour. The National Book Foundation is now embarked on a “Book a week” programme and the scope of the programme has also been widened with the increase in the number of titles.
• The aim of these Probes is two fold: to inculcate reading habit in the rural child who has never had the benefit of any supplementary reading before this, and secondly, to change the reading habits of the urban child to whom the only books available so far have been Fairy-tales and Comics. It is time he was weaned away from Tarzen and Red-Riding Hood. Needless to say the emphasis is on original writing so that the child’s interest can be roused in his own language, literature and heritage. In keeping with this the illustrations of the children books are based on real life and our own environment. Even the imaginative pictures have some relation to the needs and aspirations of our children.
• The first 19 titles in Urdu brought out by the National Book Foundation were accepted as some of the best in Asia by a Panel of Judges at the UNESCO exhibition of children’s Books in Tokyo in 1973. These are also now available in the Munich Children’s Library and have widely been acclaimed by experts here and abroad.

• Indian Airlines, formed in 1953 as a public sector undertaking, is now a Rs. 110 crore enterprise. Employing about 15,000 people, its operations stretch all over India from Srinagar in the North to Trivandrum in the South, from Mohanbari and Imphal in the East to Porbandar in the West. It is also now possible to travel from one end of the sub-continent to the other by air the same day.
• Indian Airlines, a member of the International Air Transport Association, has kept pace with the advances in aviation technology. Starting with Dakotas and Skymasters, the airline has progressively modernised its fleet which now consists of 12 Boeing 737s, 5 Caravelles, 8 F-27s, 2 Viscounts, 15 HS-748s and 2 Airbus A300 B2 aircraft (one more was expected to join the fleet in January, 1977).
• Jet era dawned on India with the introduction of Caravelles in 1963. These efficient medium-sized jets reduced the flying time considerably. Modernisation and expansion continued and 1970 saw the induction of Boeing 737s on the airline’s network.
• With its natural beauty, historical monuments, art and culture, India attracts a large number of tourists year after year. Nearly half a million came in 1975. Almost 85 per cent of the tourists who visit India travel by Indian Airlines. The passenger traffic today is over 10,000 per day.
• With the entry of the airline into the exclusive wide-body club, Indian Airlines is the first airline in Asia to introduce the wide-body jet on domestic routes. The induction of Airbus A300 B2 on Indian Airlines network from December 1, 1976 heralded a new era in the history of Indian Civil Aviation. The faster and quieter 278-seater Airbus powered by two CF6-50 engines flies on the trunk routes serving our passengers between Bombay–Delhi, Bombay-Calcutta, Bombay-Madras, Bombay-Bangalore and Delhi-Calcutta. With a normal complement of passengers the Airbus also carries 10 tonnes of cargo on each flight. The induction of-this aircraft stimulates growth of the economy and help speedy development of the hinterland.

About : 

• Hari Singh Gour was born on November 26, 1870 in a poor peasant family near Saugar. The family had to be supported by Hari Singh‘s eldest brother who provided an allowance of Rs. 50 per month. At the age of 10, Hari Singh won a scholarship of Rs. 2 per month which enabled him to attend a night school at Saugar. Later, with the help of another scholarship he went to Jabalpur to undertake further studies. He passed his Intermediate examination from Hislop College, Nagpur, standing first in the whole Province.
• When he was 18, Hari Singh Gour went to Cambridge University where he took Moral Sciences Tripos and Law Tripos. While in England he came to be known in literary circles as a promising poet.
• On his return to India he became a successful lawyer at Raipur. He wrote two monumental works, ‘The Law of Transfer in India‘ and ‘The Penal Law of British India‘. Another book ‘Hindu Law Code‘ published later added to his reputation as a great jurist. He was also a great social reformer and was successful in getting an Act passed to enable women to be enrolled as lawyers, while his Civil Marriage Bill of 1923 showed him to be a reformer thinking ahead of his times.
• By his determination and industry combined with a gift of oratory, Dr. Hari Singh Gour rose to eminent position in the political scene. He became a leader of the Opposition and of the Nationalist Party in the Indian Legislative Assembly. He was a Member of the Constituent Assembly that framed India’s Constitution.
• Besides being a great lawyer and jurist, Dr. Gour was also a great educationist. He organised Delhi University as its first Vice-Chancellor and was Vice-Chancellor of Nagpur University for two successive terms. One of his most important contributions was the founding of the University of Saugar in 1946 for which he made a munificent donation. He became the first Vice-Chancellor of this University and occupied this position until he passed away on December 25, 1949. He bequeathed the greater part of his life’s savings, a large fortune, to the University of Saugar. The new campus of this University laid out on the summit of Patharia Hills, with a panoramic view of the town and lake, has been built largely through the benefactions of Dr. Hari Singh Gour and is a fitting memorial to this man of great vision.

About : 

• Hiralal Shastri was born on November 24, 1899 at Jobner in Jaipur District. Born in a peasant family, he had his early education in Jobner. Hiralal secured the degree of Sahitya Shastri in 1920. He took B.A. degree in 1921 from Maharaja’s College, Jaipur, securing the first rank. From early childhood, Hiralal had a burning desire to go to some village and devote his life to the service of the down-trodden. Though he joined Jaipur State Service in 1921 and had a meteoric rise to become Secretary in the Home and Foreign Departments, he resigned the same in 1927.
• While in administrative service he displayed qualities of hard work, efficiency and fearlessness. In 1929, in fulfillment of his childhood resolve, Hiralal Shastri selected a remote and backward village Banasthali, 45 miles from Jaipur and founded ‘Jeevan Kutir’ there. Here he trained a band of dedicated social workers and endeavoured to implement a programme of rural recognition. These workers later became the heralds of political awakening in many of the Rajputana States. He himself as drawn to political arena when he was drafted to re-organise Jaipur Rajya Praja Mandal in 1937 of which he was twice elected General Secretary and twice President. In 1939, he led the Praja Mandal’s Satyagraha for achievement of civil liberties and suffered a six-month imprisonment. In 1947 he was appointed General Secretary of All India States Peoples Conference. The same year he was elected to the Constituent Assembly.
• On the installation of representative Government in Jaipur State in 1948, Hiralal Shastri took over as the Chief Minister and then Rajasthan State was formed on March 30, 1949, he became its first Chief Minister. On him fell the herculean task of integrating the diverse princely units into efficient modern administration. He accomplished this complex task ably in a short period. He resigned on January 5, 1951 and later became member of the Second Lok Sabha. Banasthali Vidyapith, founded by Hiralal Shastri, has today became a premier national institution for women’s education.
• Hiralal Shastri passed away on December 28, 1974. Forthright and fearless in his views, an Indian to the core of his heart, a selfless social worker, Pandit Hiralal Shastri as a farsighted and popular leader. To him goes largely the credit of laying the foundation of a strong, unified and progressive Rajasthan.

• The 7^th Pakistan National Scout Jamboree, also known as Quaid-i-Azam Centenary Jamboree, will be held at Fortress Stadium, Lahore, from November 15 to 22, 1976. Pakistan Post Office is issuing a postage stamp of 20-Paisa denomination on the 20^th November, 1976 to commemorate the occasion. This Jamboree coincides with the centenary celebrations of the First Chief Scout and Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The Quaid-i-Azam Centenary Jamboree is a milestone in the history of Scouting in Pakistan in which the Scouts will be able to know the glimpses of the teachings and behests of the Father of the Nation and his Motto of Faith Unity and Discipline. In this Jamboree an attempt has also been made and to restate the principles and teachings of Quaid-i-Azam and to interpret them for the guidance of young and old Scouts.
• In Pakistan, Scouting started from scratch in December, 1947, with the blessings of the Quaid-i-Azam who agreed to become the First Chief Scout of Pakistan. The Pakistan Boy Scouts Association established its permanent National Headquarters at Karachi. There are now six branches affiliated to the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association with a total membership of 108028. The Pakistan Boy Scouts Association, as a national body, is affiliated to the World Scout Bureau and the total membership is 14 million.
• Since the Boy Scout Movement had become world-wide, it was thought advisable to bring the boys together, every four years so as to make them realise the importance of the Scout Law, which runs as follows:–“A Scout is a friend of all, brother to every other Scout no matter to what country, class or creed the other may belong.”
• There were altogether about 50,000 Scouts in Pakistan in 1948. To-day the number exceeds 100,000. The quality of Scouting has also been steadily improving. All this has been possible with the constant supply of trained Scouts. To begin with, there were two Provincial Training Centres in the Punjab, at Walton and Ghora Gali and one in N.W.F.P. at Takya (Abbottabad). Later on a Training Centre was established at Quetta. Training Camps were also held at Ziarat, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Multan, Rawalpindi, Karachi etc.
• Sea and Air Scouting has been started in Karachi. The Air Scouts have a fine Headquarters of their own. Both Sea and Air Scouting will provide an added attraction to the older boys in a Scout Troop.
• Scouting for the physically handicapped boys is a very beneficial extension of the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association. These boys feel isolated and their lives are generally dull and dreary. • In this 7^th National Jamboree being held at Lahore from 15^th to 22^nd November 1976, the number of participants is expected to be 12,000 from home and abroad. 500 Scouts from Libya, Indonesia, India, Iran, U.S.A., Sudan and Bangladesh will also be participating.
• The Pakistan Boy Scouts Association has participated in various World and Regional Scout Events – Scouts Conferences, Jamborees, Moots, Indabas, etc.
• Pakistan Boy Scouts Association brings out two periodicals, namely, the “Pak–Scout“, which was started in September, 1948, and “Almustaid“, which is published in Urdu.

Issued for : A special postage stamp was issued to commemorate the Centenary of Japanese Kindergarten. The first kindergarten in Japan was founded in 1876 as the institution attached to the Tokyo Girls’ Normal School (the predecessor of the present Ochanomizu University). Now in Japan, there are about 13,000 kindergartens and the attending children amount to about 2,300,000.

• The first kindergarten in the world was opened in 1840 in Germany by Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852). In Japan the first kindergarten was established on November 1876 attached to the Tokyo Women’s Normal School (now Ochano-mizu Women’s College). The educational system had then been in force only several years and the elementary school had only a few pupils. Under these circumstances it is worthy of note that the stress was put on the importance of the preschool education and that the educational facilities were installed for the preschool children. In the early days of the preschool education the kindergarten was monopolized by the children of the well-off families in the urban area. It is presumed that the preschool education may have been extended by degrees from the urban area to the rural district and the fishery villages. Especially in 1952 the kindergarten got rapidly popular among people and at present its number amounts to about 13,000 with about 2,300,000 kindergarteners which occupy approximately 64% of young children.
