About :

  • Writing about Ramanujan in The Discovery of India our worthy Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru says: Mathematics in India inevitably makes one think of one extraordinary figure of recent times. This was Srinivasa Ramanujan. Born in a poor Brahmin family in South India, having no opportunities for a proper education, he became a clerk in the Madras Port Trust. But he was bubbling over with some irrepressible quality of instinctive genius and played about with numbers and equations in his spare time. By a lucky chance he attracted the attention of a mathematician who sent some of his amateur work to Cambridge in England. People there were impressed and a scholarship was arranged for him. So he left his clerk’s job and went to Cambridge and during a very brief period there did work of profound value and amazing originality. The Royal Society of England went rather out of their way and made him a Fellow, but he died two years later, probably of tuberculosis, at the age of thirty-three. Professor Julian Huxley has, I believe, referred to him somewhere as the greatest mathematician of the century“.
  • Ramanujan was a pure mathematician of the highest order, who worked on the theory of numbers, a theory which is the queen of mathematics. Another problem which engaged Ramanujan‘s attention was that of the partition of whole numbers. Nature had gifted Ramanujan with an uncanny memory which he put entirely at the service of numbers. As a result he remembered the idiosyncrasies of every one of the first 10000 integers to an extent that each one of them became his personal friend. He belonged to that school of mathematicians who consider that mathematics with its inaccessibility to application and consequent freedom from abuse like cricket is merely a game, one of manipulating symbols according to given rules.
  • His work and the work of other mathematicians on Riemann’s zeta-function, done in another context, has now been geared to the technological mill. It has been applied to the theory of pyrometry, the investigation of temperature of furnaces aimed at building better blast furnaces.
  • The mathematicians of the Atomic Energy Commission and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research are looking into his collected works on mock-theta functions, modular equations, identities, theories of continued fractions and elliptic functions or some other of his numerous creations for possible use in atomic research.
  • The great mathematician HardyRamanujan‘s discoverer and collaborator in Cambridge, wrote :I still say to myself when I am depressed and find myself forced to listen to pompous and tiresome people, ‘Well, I have done one thing you could never have done, and that is to have collaborated with both Littlewood and Ramanujan on something like equal terms.
  • No greater tribute could be offered to Ramanujan‘s mathematical genius.

About :

  • Of the world’s estimated one billion children, more than half face a short life burdened with hunger and sickness. Many die in infancy; others are disabled by disease or malnutrition. To tackle this problem on a world-wide scale the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was created by the United Nations on December 11, 1946. UNICEF is a part of the United Nations, with a semi-autonomous status. It is governed by a thirty-nation Executive Board which meets regularly to set policy, consider requests, allocate aid and evaluate results. Financing of UNICEF is by voluntary contributions, mainly by Governments, about one hundred of which now contribute annually. In recent years UNICEF allocation of aid have totalled about $ 30 million a year and these are expected to go up.
  • Purpose: The function of UNICEF is to help countries improve the welfare of children throughout the world. The Organisation concentrates particularly on three needs of the Children viz. (1) the provision of health services mostly preventive but also curative; (2) control of communicable disease; and (3) improvements of nutrition. To ensure the first, UNICEF supplies equipment not only to large number of hospitals but, also to thousands of Maternity and Child Welfare centres in 72 countries. In Pakistan, UNICEF is helping to establish a projected new Rural Health Scheme. 30 Rural Health Units, each with three sub-centres, have already started functioning and about 30 are to be set up yearly to ensure that preventive health services and medical aid come within the reach of the poorest villagers. The UNICEF aids Training schools for health workers. Daees, the traditional birth attendants, are being provided with special training facilities and basic instruments by UNICEF.
  • To help control disease, UNICEF has launched world-wide campaign against such major scourges as Tuberculosis, Yaws, Trachoma, Malaria and Leprosy. In Pakistan, millions of children and adults have been tested and immunised against T.B. To provide urgently needed D.D.T. for anti-malarial operations, UNICEF has helped in setting up a D.D.T. factory at Daudkhel. A penicillin factory, built up with material assistance by UNICEF, is at present manufacturing annually about 8 to 10 tons of penicillin for anti-biotic use for patients at hospitals throughout the country.
  • UNICEF is attacking the problem of hunger on many fronts. In Pakistan, skimmed and whole Milk and Vitamins are distributed to Children and their mothers at MCH centres and hospitals. To ensure a regular supply of milk to needy children, UNICEF is providing equipment and transport for a milk conservation plant in Karachi. Similar plants are planned for Lahore, Rawalpindi and Dacca.
  • The Pakistan Post Office has issued this set of stamps to commemorate the 16th anniversary of UNICEF.
  • With the compliments of the Director-General, Pakistan Post Office, Karachi.

About :

  • Since 1957, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department has been bringing out special postage stamps every year on November 14, to focus attention on the problems of Child Welfare. The stamps so issued carried the theme conveyed year after year by the International Union of Child Welfare, Geneva.
  • This year’s Children’s Day Stamp likewise carries the theme as conveyed by the International Union of Child Welfare viz. “the rights of every child : the responsibility of every adult and community“. The stamp has a symbolic design and seeks to portray the idea behind this theme. Special emphasis is laid on the fact that the child of today will be the standard bearer of tomorrow. It is, therefore, the responsibility of every adult and the community at large to ensure that every opportunity is given to our children to develop into good citizens so that they can also offer their contribution to the progress of the nation.

  • Brass-ware: Though brass has ceased to be as commonly used for utensils of household use as it was, craftsmen skilled in making brass-ware are found in almost all parts of Pakistan. They make decorative plates, vases, bowls and similar other things in exquisite designs reminiscent of the great Mughal period. Products of polished brass have their own appeal but it is the engraved work in colourful and artistic patterns that is most prized.
  • Wood work: Exquisite carving in wood and wood crafts inlaid with ivory is a specialised skill of the Kashmir area and these products are highly prized by tourists.
  • Ivory Carving: Carving in ivory is a very specialised art requiring a high degree of skill and patient work on the part of the artisan. Caskets with delicate lace work are highly prized. The present artisans have inherited the skill from generations going far back into the past.
  • Cane Basket Work: Stripped cane is woven by skilled craftsmen to produce articles of utility such as baskets, hand bags, ladies bags, mats etc.

Designed and printed at : India Security Press, Nasik

About :

  • This is the first stamp in the projected series on Indian Wild Life which The Posts and Telegraphs Department is bringing out on October 1, 1962 (Wild Life Week).
  • Other stamps in the series depicting the Indian Lion, the Tiger, the Elephant and Gaur – Indian Bison will be brought out in due course.
  • Full description of the animal appearing on this stamp viz. the great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros is given below.
  • Indian Rhinoceros :
    • The numbers of the Great Indian One-horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) sank dangerously low at the beginning of the present century. Sportsmen and poachers shot it for its valuable horn, which is still mistakenly used in some parts of Eastern Asia as an aphrodisiac. (In fact all parts of the body are marketable for some purpose or other.) Strict protection both in and outside sanctuaries has saved it, and there are now at least 60 Rhinos in Bengal and 340 in Assam, a total of about 400 in India.
    • This species of Rhino is found only in India (apart from Nepal, where there are about 100 to 150 of them left). Formerly the one-horned Rhinoceros and the Asiatic two-horned Rhinoceros were also found in North Eastern India, but both of these have become extinct in this country.
    • Indian Rhino can be seen in Jaladapara Sanctuary of Bengal, and even more easily in the Kasiranga Sanctuary of Assam where many visitors now come from all over the world to see these prehistoric-looking, armour-plated creatures. Although they are supposed to be short-sighted and slow of hearing, they are extremely agile and can easily outstrip a man or an elephant.
    • A few are occasionally caught by the pit system, for the zoos of the world. Like wild elephants, when first captured they are extremely dangerous and ferocious, but they soon loose their fear of man and become remarkably tame.
  • India’s Wild Life (by E. P. Gee) :
    • A number of very fine wild life sanctuaries are being maintained in India in order to ensure the survival of rare and endangered species. They also provide visitors the pleasing spectacle of seeing the wild animals undisturbed in their natural habitat. The huge subcontinent of India possesses several species of Fauna not found in other parts of the world. The Rhinoceros, the Indian Swamp Deer, the Brow-antlered Deer, the Spotted Deer or Chital, Nilgai or the Blue Bull, the Blackbuck and the four-horned Antelope do not exist anywhere in the world except in India.
    • Although India is the home of the magnificent and spectacular Tiger, yet Indian Lion can claim to be the old inhabitant of this country. Today the Lion exists only in the Gir forest of Gujarat.
    • Other rare interesting animals include Indian Wild-Ass of Kutch, the Kashmir-Stag or Hangul and the Brow-Antlered Deer of Manipur.
    • The Wild Buffalo survives in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Assam. The Indian Bison is to be found in Southern, Central and North-East India.
    • Though only one variety of ape is found in India – the Hoolock or white-browed Gibbon – there are many macaques and Langurs, including the beautiful, newly-discovered golden Langur.
  • Like the Rhinoceros :
    • Go forward without a path !
      Fearing nothing, caring for nothing,
Wander alone, like the rhinoceros !
Even as the lion, not trembling at noises,
Even as the lotus-leaf unstained by the water,
Do thou wander alone, like the rhinoceros !
      Dhammapada

Name : Ramabai Ranade

Born on Jan 25, 1863 at Devarashtre, Satara, Bombay Presidency, British India [now in Kolhapur, Maharashtra]

Died on 1924

About :

  • The late Smt. Ramabai Ranade – whose birth centenary was celebrated in India on January 25, 1962 – was born in January 1862 in a little village in Satara District near Poona. Her father had not taught her to read and write. Girls’ education was a taboo in those days. As a little girl of 11 years she was married to Shri Madhav Govind Ranade, a pioneer in the social reform movement. He devoted all his spare time to educate her in face of all the opposition of the women of the house and helped her to become an ideal wife and a worthy helpmate in social and educational reform work.
  • Ramabai made her entry into public life in the 1870s but it was after Justice Ranade‘s death in 1901 that she wholly identified herself with the cause of women in India.
  • She willingly became a Visitor of the Central Prison and the Lunatic Asylum at Yeravada. She regularly visited the prison, prayed with women-prisoners and tried to regenerate their souls. She visited the Lunatic Asylum and attended meetings of its managing committee. She went to see boys in the Reformatory School, spoke to them and distributed sweets to them on festive occasions.
  • Ramabai‘s philanthropic instinct knew no bounds. Not only did she go to visit patients in the local hospitals, distributing fruits, flowers and books, and spoke to them with loving sympathy, but she also went out to Gujarat and Kathiawar in 1913 to organise relief for the famine-stricken people. Even in the closing years of her life she went to Alandi at the time of Ashadhi and Kartiki fares, with volunteers from the Seva Sadan, to render help to women pilgrims visiting the shrine of St. Dnyaneshwar. In taking up this activity she laid foundations for a new type of social service for women.
  • In 1904 when Dr. R.G. Bhandarkar, Shri Bhajekar and other leaders of social reform proposed to organise an All-India Women Conference they look to Smt. Ranade for her co-operation, lead and support. The first session of the Conference was held under the presidentship of Smt. Ranade in December 1904, at Bombay.
  • In 1908 Shri B.M. Malbari and Shri Dayaram Gidumal thought of starting a Society for founding a home for women and training Indian women to be “Sevikas“. They turned to Smt. Ranade, the President of the First All-India Women’s Conference for her lead, guidance and help. And thus the Seva Sadan (Bombay) was founded.
  • Next in 1915 the Poona Seva Sadan was registered as a Society under her guidance. The Society expanded its old educational departments and started new ones. It developed a Women’s Training College, three hostels; one of them for Medical Students and Probationer Nurses.
  • In 1924, when Smt. Ranade died, the Poona Seva Sadan was training more than one thousand women in different departments. It was largely owing to Smt. Ranade‘s initiative, guidance and exertions that the Seva Sadan found a footing and grew so rapidly in spite of prevailing prejudices.
  • The last two outstanding contributions which Smt. Ranade made were; first, the organisation of agitation for extending compulsory and free primary education to girls; and secondly, organisation of women’s suffrage movement in Bombay presidency in 1921-22.
  • The singular position which Smt. Ranade had attained at the close of her life is brought home to us by Mahatma Gandhi‘s tribute to her :The death of Ramabai Ranade is a great national loss. She was the embodiment of all that a Hindu widow could be. She was a true friend and helpmate of her illustrious husband in his life-time. After his death she chose as her life-work one of her husband’s activities. Justice Ranade was a reformer and deeply interested in the uplift of Indian womanhood. Ramabai threw herself heart and soul into the Seva Sadan. She concentrated her whole energy upon it. The result is that the Seva Sadan has become an institution without a second of its kind throughout India.

About :

  • The High Court at Bombay was established on August 14, 1862 under Letters-Patent issued on June 26, 1862.
  • In this case also both Original and Appellate jurisdiction were vested in it. In 1948, its Original Civil jurisdiction was reduced by the establishment of the Bombay City Civil Court and its Original Criminal jurisdiction was taken away by the setting up of the City Services Court, Greater Bombay. Re-organisation of States in 1956 enlarged the territory under its Appellate jurisdiction. As a result, separate Benches of the High Court were constituted at Nagpur and Rajkot; but the latter was abolished on the bifurcation of State of Bombay, in 1960, into the States of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • The building of the High Court, standing in the Fort area, were commenced on April 1, 1871 and completed in November 1878.
  • During the century of its existence, the High Court at Bombay has been a repository of justice and the guardian of the rights and liberties of the people.
