  • Surdas : Look not at my vices, O’ Lord: All are equal in Thy eyes, they say, Thou canst, only if Thou wilt, grant me salvation. A blind poet of the 15th-16th century. A commemorative postage stamp on the 3rd Anniversary of the signing of the North Atlantic Alliance :

1008 NATO [United States Stamp 1952]Issued by United States of America

Issued on Apr 4, 1952

The Historic Stamp :
The 3¢ stamp honors the third anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO was formed to provide a unified military command for the defense of 12 Western nations (the number was later increased to 15), including the United States. Article 5 of the treaty provides that an attack on one member will be considered an attack on all members.

The stamp was designed by C. R. Chickering. It shows two hands holding aloft a burning torch. Beneath the torch are the objectives of the organization, the preservation of peace through strength and freedom.

The NATO Stamp was printed in deep violet by steel engraving. The First Day City was Washington, D.C.

Type : Stamp, Postal Used

Denomination : 3 cents

Colour : Deep Violet

The Subject of the Stamp :

  • With his European counterparts, United States Secretary of State Dean Acheson negotiated the North Atlantic Treaty that led to NATO. The historic pact broke a long-standing tradition of American diplomacy. It committed the United States, for first time in history, to a peace-time alliance that obligated the nation to fight in Europe, should any member nation there be attacked.
  • The forces of NATO are divided into the Atlantic and Channel Commands and the Allied Command in Europe (SACEUR). The first supreme allied commander of SACEUR was General Dwight D. Eisenhower, commander of the Allied forces in Europe during World War II. Upon assuming his new post, Eisenhower remarked that this was the first time a great allied army had been created to preserve the peace and not to wage war.

A commemorative postage stamp on the 50th Anniversary of A.A.A. :

1007 School Girls and Safety Patrolman, Automobiles [United States Stamp 1952]Issued by United States of America

Issued on Mar 4, 1952

The Historic Stamp :
The 3¢ stamp celebrates the 50th anniversary of the American Automobile Association (AAA). Founded as an aid to motorists in 1902, the organization is headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia. It has grown up with the automotive industry and now has more than 28 million members throughout the United States.

The stamp design shows the familiar AAA logo above a vintage 1902 automobile and one manufactured in the early 1950s. The scene on the left calls attention to the safety programs the association has supported over the years. It shows a school safety patrol member preventing two young girls from making a dangerous crossing.

The American Automobile Association Stamp was printed in deep blue by steel engraving. It was first placed on sale in Chicago, Illinois.

Type : Stamp, Postal Used

Denomination : 3 cents

Colour : Deep Blue

The Subject of the Stamp :

  • The world’s first national auto club was Automobile Club de France, established in 1895. Seven years later, nine local U.S. clubs consolidated to form the American Automobile Association.
  • The AAA provides many services to its members, from touring and emergency aid to acting as a travel agent. In addition, the organization benefits all motorists by promoting highway safety. Over the years, it has conducted numerous educational campaigns for accident prevention. It also created the school patrol system and instituted student driver training in high school.
  • Better roads are another area of concern. The AAA was one of the principal lobbiers for uniform road markers on U.S. highways. It was also in the forefront of the movement for standardized international road signs.

A commemorative postage stamp on the 125th Anniversary of the granting of a Charter to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company by the Maryland Legislature :

1006 Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company [United States Stamp 1952]Issued by United States of America

Issued on Feb 28, 1952

The Historic Stamp :
The 3¢ stamp was issued to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the granting of a charter of operation to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The first passenger railway in the United States, the B & O has been in continuous operation since its first trip through Baltimore on January 7, 1830.

The stamp, designed by C. R. Chickering, portrays three stages of development in rail transportation against a background of the 1827 charter. At the far left is the horsedrawn “Pioneer Car” initially used by the railroad. The “Tom Thumb”, America’s first steam locomotive, operated by the B & O, is in the centre. A modern, streamlined Diesel engine is pictured at the far right.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Charter Stamp, printed in bright blue by steel engraving, was first placed on sale in Baltimore, Maryland.

Type : Stamp, Postal Used

Denomination : 3 cents

Colour : Bright Blue

The Subject of the Stamp :

  • In 1827, the recently opened Erie Canal was diverting crucial western trade from the South to northern cities. A group of Baltimore businessmen, seeking to regain this trade, agreed that transportation by rail was the only solution. The State of Maryland granted them a charter to establish the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the first common carrier in the United States.
  • The railroad was an immediate success. It expanded steadily westward, reaching St. Louis, Missouri, in 1857. Although its growth was interrupted by the Civil War, the line provided a strong link with industrial centers in the North, which helped keep Maryland in the Union. After the war, the B & O resumed its progress, extending service to Chicago in 1874 and Philadelphia in 1886. Under control of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway since 1963, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is now primarily a freight line.
