Design :
(A) Hohei Hall (Important cultural property, Nishi 4-chome, Minami Juichijo, Chuo-ku, Sapporo–shi)
This building was constructed in 1880, as a western-style hotel, by the Hokkaido Development Agency which was founded in 1869.
It was designed by a building engineer who belonged to the Construction and Repairs Section, Industry Bureau, Hokkaido Development Agency. The basic tone of its architectural mode is American, but the building has the mixed architectural elements of European and Japanese styles.
Named the Hohei Hall after the clear stream of the Toyohira River, this building is said to carry the blessing, “May Sapporo, capital of Hokkaido, develop affluently and peacefully in the future”.
(B) Old Glover House (Important cultural property, Minami Yamate-cho, Nagasaki–shi)
This is the house of the Briton Thomas Blake Glover who came to Nagasaki in 1859 for the purpose of trading business and who made great contributions to the modernization of Japan meanwhile. It was designed by Glover himself, and was constructed in 1863. It is the oldest timber residential building in Japan which is constructed in the Western style.
This house is also said to be the place connected with the opera “Madame Butterfly“, and a statue of “Madame Butterfly”, depicted by Tamaki Miura is located in the upper plaza of this house.
