About :

  • A 50 yen postage stamp has been issued on May 17, 1980, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the training sailing-ships Nippon-Maru and Kaio-Maru.
  • It has been 50 years since the construction of the large training sailing-ships Nippon-Maru and Kaio-Maru in 1930. Both ships have an identical design. They are elegant four-masted sailing vessels. They have come to have priceless significance to the world, crossing the oceans, the Pacific in particular, to visit other maritime nations. So far, either has logged a total of about 1.5 million kilometers over the seas. During this time, over 20,000 students from merchant marine colleges and schools have used the two ships for practical training.
  • A training institute was established in 1930 under the Imperial edict No. 108 to administer the two training sailing-ships. The Maritime Training Institute was founded at first as part of the Ministry of Education, but later its name was changed to the present Institute for Nautical Training and it was placed under the Ministry of Transport.
