About : 

• In Japan social insurance comprises 3 kinds of health insurance; one for general labourers excluding day labourers, a second for the day labourers only and a third for people other than the above labourers, for each of which an individual law is instituted separately. The health insurance was the first social insurance in Japan, put into practice on July 1, 1926, based on the law concerning health insurance laid down in 1922. Payment for it started from January 1, 1927. In those days the insured was limited to the factory and mine labourers. Afterwards, the extent of the insured has been expanded; in the meantime, the labourers’ accident insurance was newly established. Thus, after several institutional changes health insurance celebrates its 50^th anniversary this year.
