  • Euterpnosia chibensis is a kind of spring cicada belonging to the Cicadae of the hemipterous family. Its body is about three centimeters long, and the length between the head and the end of wings is about 3.5 centimeters. The greeny body has black and light brown spots. The wings are transparent.
  • The spring cicada lives only in Japan, but euterpnosia chibensis’ main habitat is in southern regions. In Japan it lives in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa. It is often seen staying on such trees as chinquapin and oak. When many of euterpnosia chibensis sing in unison, the doing becomes a high sound, and the species is called in some areas “ozemi” (large cicada).

These three areas are designated as natural monuments. The himeharuzemi of respective species appear in the above areas some time between late in June and the middle of July.
