• Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune is a premier tri-services medical institution set up by the Ministry of Defence for capacity building of medical and nursing manpower of the Armed Forces. This unique institution imparts medical education and training to undergraduate and postgraduate medical, nursing and paramedical cadets, officers and personnel of the Indian Armed Forces and friendly countries so as to cater to the health care needs of the Armed Forces personnel and their families.
  
• The College, started on 1^st May 1948, by an Act of Parliament, was initially only for postgraduate studies. The Undergraduate Wing of the College was subsequently established in 1962 and celebrates its Golden Jubilee on 4^th August, 2012. The infrastructure and facilities at the College have increased over the years. In addition to the Postgraduate and Graduate Wing, the institution also has a Paramedical Wing and a College of Nursing now. The College is supported by four affiliated hospitals, which are Command Hospital, Southern Command; Military Hospital, Cardio Thoracic Centre; Military Hospital, Kirkee and Artificial Limb Centre. All these hospitals are multi-speciality tertiary care institutions with specialized core competencies.
  
• The College campus is spread over 181 acres with a mixture of ultramodern and heritage buildings, set amidst parks, play fields and tree lined cobbled pathways. The college provides 100% accommodation for students and faculty. Two auditoriums with a seating capacity of 1000 and 350 each are utilized for seminars, lectures and recreational activities. The Ashok Chakra Library of the college has a vast collection of books and subscribes to national and international journals. It also has a fully functional e-library section with forty computers.
  
• The annual intake for MBBS is through an All India Open Entrance Examination. Ten seats of the MBBS programme are also reserved for foreign government nominees of the Ministry of External Affairs. Postgraduate training is currently being imparted to over three hundred and fifty Medical and Dental officers registered for thirty two different specialities. AFMC has remained contemporary and forward looking in its approach to medical learning and education and has incorporated many of the newer methodologies of content delivery in its academic schedule.
  
• The College is also actively involved in research in the medical field. Funds are allotted by the Defence Research and Development Organization every year for collaborative research projects with various national and international organizations. The level of involvement of the undergraduate students in basic medical research is commendable. A large number of books, training manuals and research papers have been published by the faculty of this college.
  
• The AFMC is committed to overall development of students. The students are encouraged to not only achieve academic excellence but also to explore and refine their capabilities and talent by participating in extracurricular activities. • The Commonwealth stretches from Africa to Asia and from the Pacific to the Caribbean, and has more than 1.7 billion people making up nearly 30% of the world’s population, comprising many faiths, races, languages and cultures. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the patron of the Games and HRH the Earl of Wessex, CVO, is the Vice patron.
• The Commonwealth Games Federation, founded on the intrinsic principles of humanity, equality and destiny, first discussed the idea of Millennium Commonwealth Youth Games in 1997. The Commonwealth Youth Games are a mini Commonwealth Games attracting the best young athletes (18 years and under) from the member countries. The city of Edinburgh in Scotland, hosted the first Youth Games in 2000 with participation from 14 countries and the second Games followed in 2004 in Bendigo, Australia with a participation of 24 countries respectively.
• The III Commonwealth Youth Games has confirmed participation of all 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth and will be held from 12^th to 18^th October, 2008 at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi, Pune. Athletes will compete in 9 disciplines (Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Swimming, Shooting, Tennis, Table Tennis, Wrestling & Weightlifting). The unique feature of the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi is that all 9 competition venues and the Athletes Village are housed in one single complex.
• It is the first time that the Commonwealth Youth Games are being held in Asia in Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra, and one of India‘s fastest growing metropolises.
• Over 1300 athletes and 350 officials from all 71 nations and territories will participate in the Games, making this the biggest Commonwealth Youth Games yet.
• The Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 showcases to the world India’s readiness to host world-class international sporting events and is prelude to the hosting of Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010. The Games will be telecast live on Doordarshan.
• With all athletes under 18 years of age, the Youth Games focus on mainly three aspects – sports, education and culture. Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 struck a perfect balance between these three aspects.
• 71 schools of Pune have partnered with one Commonwealth nation each and are studying their history, geography, culture, sports background, etc. through a unique programme initiated by CYG called “Bond Forever“. The children of Pune will be cheering for athletes from their respective partner Commonwealth nations during the Games. Athletes and coaches from the visiting teams will interact with students and will exchange training tips and techniques. “Bond Forever” is becoming increasingly popular as it will forge lasting friendships with the young athletes of the Commonwealth.
• For the first time in history of the Youth Games, the unique concept of a Youth Baton Relay was introduced. The Youth Baton Relay was flagged off from Delhi University on 1^st August 2008 and after traveling through 9 states, 199 cities, towns, villages and visiting more than 1000 schools, colleges and universities, the Baton will reach Pune on 7^th October 2008.
• The YBR is being run in support of the “Save the Tiger” initiative of WWF and Green Games initiatives. The Relay also aims to promote Olympic sports in India.
• The Baton has been welcomed with daily celebrations, functions and cultural programmes to entertain and enthrall thousands of people who line the route in support of the Commonwealth Youth Games.
• The Baton is collecting water and sapling from each destination on its journey. The collected water, along with the water brought in by the athletes of 71 Commonwealth nations, will be used at the opening Ceremony to create a spectacular ‘Fountain of Youth‘. The saplings will be planted in the ‘Garden of Youth‘ which will be a legacy to the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City from CYG.
• Team Pune, the Volunteer Programme of the Youth Games has recruited 5000 volunteers, between the ages of 18 and 60 years. Coming from all walks of life, they will work with the Organising Committee to deliver the best ever Commonwealth Youth Games. The Pune Games involve a staggering 3000 volunteers for the various functional areas in addition to 500 Police volunteers, 300 NCC volunteers and 500 sports volunteers.
• The volunteers are the “Face of the Games” and the “Backbone of the Organising Committee“, as they forge lasting friendships and again invaluable, rewarding experiences. Their efforts will be recognized by the city and the Organising Committee with a grand Volunteer Recognition Programme on 21^st October, 2008.
• The III Commonwealth Youth Games have been declared as the Green Games. Regarding this, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between CYG and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). A Green Sport Consortium comprising IL&FS and Nature First are on board for implementing the Green Games initiative.
• The initiatives been undertaken by CYG Pune 2008 towards this objective are broadly classified into two categories – minimizing the environmental footprint of the Games and creating environmental awareness amongst the people. Some of the activities undertaken are :
  • Environmental Awareness Programme with Self-audit across 100 schools in Pune and the “CYG Pune 2008 Green School Award” for best performance.
  • E-waste management workshops in colleges and IT companies.
  • Extensive tree plantation in and around the city.
• Pune City will proudly adorn the colours and look of CYG. The city will wear a Festive look as it will dress up to welcome the athletes and officials from the Commonwealth and India.

• Youth Hostels as a concept evolved from excursions organised by a German school teacher Richard Schirrmann and his pupils in 1909. The inauguration of the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) was an outcome of the First International Youth Hostel Conference held at Amsterdam in 1932. India hosted the 42^nd IYHF Conference from 23^rd to 27^th August, 1998 at New Delhi.
• Youth hostels promote fellowship and community interaction and a better understanding, bringing together youth from different parts of the world. They stimulate youth to think about their role in preservation of the environment, plant and animal life.
• Youth Hostelling International or Hostelling International logo with the blue triangle, hut and tree is registered as a trademark in many countries. Youth hostels are run by the national Youth Hostel Association in each individual country under the auspices of the International Youth Hostel Federation which is an international non-governmental, non-profit making organisation recognised by UNESCO. IYHF offers computerised International Booking Network (IBN) to meet the needs of this mobile and aware clientele while maintaining the unique qualities and mission that have made Youth hostels such a global success.
• The Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) was established on 14^th July, 1949 when a group of educationalists from Maharaja College, Mysore formed a committee to promote Youth Hostel Movement. YHAI, through its more than 305 units and 22 state branches [by 1998], offers inexpensive, neat, hygienic and secure accommodation at a nominal cost in youth hostels located throughout India. It organises a number of activities such as long and short distance cycle trails, expeditions and adventure sports, trekking in mountains, in deserts and along the beaches. The organisation also conducts camps and workshops on national integration, control of environment and pollution and training courses in youth leadership for inculcating self-discipline and self-initiative in the youth. • Council on Legislation is the legislative body of Rotary International which has the authority to amend the constitutional documents of Rotary International. The Council meets every three years at a time and place designated by the Board of Rotary International. The Council met in New Delhi during January 12-15, 1998, where 518 Rotary leaders (one from each Rotary district) worldwide participated in its deliberations. The Council was meeting for the first time in India. The Council is Rotary International’s Parliament and examine and vote upon legislative proposals received from clubs round the world.

• Every year, on the occasion of Children’s Day, the Postal Department brings out a special postage stamp, generally based on paintings done by children. This year (1993) there is a happy convergence of Children’s Day and the inauguration of the prestigious biennial International Film Festival for Children and Young People (I’CYP) being held at Udaipur from 14 to 23 November 1993.
• The Department of Posts, in a gesture of support to the laudable objective of the National Centre for Films for Children and young people to create a favourable atmosphere for the promotion of a flourishing cinema for Children and young people, has decided to bring out the ‘Children’s Day’ postage stamp for 1993 based on ‘Udaipur I’CYP India November 14–23, 1993′.
• Consequently, the highlight of the stamp is the 8^th I’CYP mascot ‘Gajju’. As the festival organisers put it, “endearing to children the world over, an elephant evokes friendly awe, admiration and even a strange fascination. It also symbolises an uncanny memory of things past…… the rendering is spontaneous, free of all rules and as asymmetrical as a child’s thinking”.

• The Meerut College was started on 15^th July 1892 with only a few students and fewer teaching staff in a Municipal School building. After a few days only it was shifted to its new campus where it had to overcome many problems including shortage of funds, to give the institution a permanent status. Individual donation and grants-in-aid helped to tide over the crisis. Thereafter, the institution grew rapidly and expanded its activities in the sphere of higher education. The present campus of the College with its sports, and hostel complexes provide excellent facilities for the students to compete in the field of educational research and other activities. This College is rendering great service to the cause of higher education in the country by providing research and postgraduate facilities in different faculties, including Humanities, Science, Commerce, Law and Education. The College was affiliated to Meerut University in 1964 when the University was formed.
• With gradual expansion of both teaching and recreational facilities, the College has gained in popularity. It can now look back with legitimate pride over its past 100 years that produced hundreds of successful students including those who achieved national and even international fame in different fields of activities.
• The luminaries who steered this institution through its 100 years included Dr. B.R. Chaterjee was the first Indian to be the Principal and a respected educationist. Equally important was the role played by Dr. Pt. Sita Ram, who was the Secretary of the College for three decades stewarding most of the modernization programmes. Dr. Pt. Sita Ram brought glory to his alma mater when he was honoured with knighthood and later appointed the country’s High Commissioner at Karachi.

• Youth Tourism is a world phenomenon which accounts for more than 17 percent of all international travel. Youth Tourism has an annual growth rate of 6.5 percent, and is developing at a much faster pace than the 4 percent growth rate registered by international tourism. Its development into a mass movement is already a success story in some countries. However it is acknowledged that a largely untapped world market exists comprising one billion young people. They are going to experience significant qualitative and quantitative changes in the universe, due to swift technological developments and the ensuing transformation of global society. Also, keeping in mind that at present tourism ranks among three major export industries in the world, alongside oil and automobiles, the political and economic stakes of tourism are indeed very high. For the first time, an inter-governmental conference on Youth Tourism was hosted by the Government of India, under the aegis of the World Tourism Organisation, from November 18-21, 1991 at New Delhi. The Conference explored various facets of Youth Tourism – the political, economic, social and cultural significance of a vast movement of young people across the continents.
• Youth has a tremendous capacity to absorb new ideas, concepts and ways of life. The results of various important surveys have shown that young people are motivated to travel by an urge to learn about other environments and lifestyles. Youth Tourism therefore has a special significance in the process of educating youth, in preparing them for contemporary life in present day societies, and in safeguarding the spirit of greater understanding and accommodation that comes through travel and interaction with other cultures and people. Social tourism, and the access of young people with limited means to travel, should be of vital concern for the developing countries and for all forward looking nations.
• One of the most important objectives of the ICYT-91 is to draw up a set of global recommendations for the development and promotion of Youth Tourism. If adequately supported by policies of national governments, this dynamic flow of Youth Tourism will undoubtedly leave an indelible imprint on the 21^st century as an important factor of peace within the international community, for the future.
• The ICYT-91 holds a special significance for India with its nearly 270 million youth, who, like their contemporaries elsewhere, seek opportunities for crossing frontiers and for enlarging the horizons of their world.
