• The Indian Railways, a symbol of national integration and economic development, has played a pivotal role in transforming transportation in India. Among its many achievements, the adoption of electric traction stands as a testament to its forward-thinking approach and commitment to sustainability.
• The history of electric traction in India dates back to 1925 when the first electric train ran on the Harbour Line between Bombay V.T. (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Kurla. About : 

• Construction of “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel” in Chattogram under the river Karnaphuli is an initiative of the present government led by Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to fulfil the dream “Golden Bengal” of the greatest Bengali of all time, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which is the first under river road Tunnel in Bangladesh as well as in the South Asia. In the year 2010 Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared in a public meeting in Chattogram to construct a tunnel under the river Karnaphuli. Then the Project was initiated in 2011 by a feasibility study. Later on, during the visit of Hon’ble Prime Minister in China on 09 June, 2014 a Government to Government based Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Chinese Government for constructing the tunnel. Accordingly, China Government nominated “China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC Ltd)” for Constructing the tunnel. Thereafter, on 30 June, 2015 the Loan Agreement was signed between Bangladesh Bridge Authority and China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC Ltd.). Afterward, on 14 October, 2016 the Loan Agreement was signed between Exim Bank of China & Economic Relation Division and in the Same day His Excellency Hon’ble President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the foundation stone of tunnel construction.
• Objectives of the Project: –
  • In order to make connectivity of the coveted “One City and Two Town” model, development of road communication with the south-east part of the country, connectivity with the Asian Highway Network, connection with Chattogram Port & Airport, reduction of existing traffic congestion bypassing Chattogram city, development of existing & developing industrial zone as well as for flourishing tourism industry at the Anowara end and for smooth functioning of port, initiatives were taken to construct a tunnel under the river Karnaphuli.
• Rationale of the Project: –
  • To enable the entry and berthing of large vessels with higher requirement of draft and length, construction of a Deep-Sea Port in Matarbari, Chattogram is under planning. It is expected that the cargo traffic through Chattogram will increase significantly after opening the operation of the Deep-Sea Port. Moreover, to avoid the sedimentation problem under the river Karnaphuli it is essential to construct a tunnel instead of a bridge. Thus, Construction of Tunnel appears to be a prerequisite in fulfilling the above important objectives.
• Tunnel Alignment: –
  • West Side: 2 Km downstream of the River Karnaphuli from the Airport & near Navy College.
  • East Side: At the Anowara end near KAFCO Fertilizer Factory.
  • Tunnel Type: Dual Two-Lane Tube.
• Construction Method: –
  • The tunneling works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel had been done by “Shield Driven Method”. In this method Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) had been used for excavation of Soil and Slurry Transportation System was used to remove the soil from the tunnel to Slurry Treatment Plant.
• Brief Description of Tunnel Tube: –
  • The total length of the tunnel is 3315 meters with Open-Cut, Cut & Cover, Working shaft on both sides and two Tubes of 2450 meter length. The maximum depth of the tunnel from mean sea level is 42.60 meter. The inner and outer diameters of the tunnel are 10.80 and 11.80 meter respectively. The inside vertical clearance is 4.90 meter and maximum slope is 4 percent.
  • The main round tube is divided into upper and lower parts. In the upper part vehicle will run over the concrete slab and on the surface there are systems for lighting, air circulation and security signals. The lower parts have an emergency exit with drainage system. In addition, there are three cross passage between the two tubes after every 700 meter for emergency rescue purpose. The inner height of every cross passage is 2.7 meter. The maximum speed limit of vehicle inside the tunnel is 80 km per hour.
• Due to strong political leadership and deft economic management of Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina helped Bangladesh to meet all criteria for graduation out of Least Developed Country (LDC) status. Bangladesh achieved the status of Middle-Income Country crossing the lower Middle-Income threshold in 2015 and achieved a decade of 7 percent average GDP growth. After the opening of “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel” the Financial & Economic IRR will be respectively 6.19% & 12.49% and the Financial & Economic “Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR)” will be respectively 1.05 & 1.50. Moreover, it will accelerate the GDP growth rate of near about 0.166%. Due to the construction of “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel” the dream of “Golden Bengal” of Bangabandhu will move one step ahead and the macro economy of Bangladesh will be accelerated.

• With the rise of fraudulent and illegal migration, Ministry of External Affairs has been making constant efforts to educate migrants about the perils of illegal channels. Illegal migrants may be forced to live a wretched existence in the target country through illegal channels because they will be unable to legitimately enroll in any assistance or protection systems introduced by GOI. Instead, they will be subjected to harsh, insecure, and unpleasant living situations, as well as a significant danger of being exploited by unlawful employers who may force them to accept flexible work schedules at low rates and in hazardous working conditions. As a result, international migration has become centered on the necessity for both safe and trained migration.
• Given our robust demographic dividend and rapidly changing global economic world order, Ministry of External Affairs has also been working on various activities such as aligning e-Migrate portals with other Ministries in India as well as Governments of host countries for skilling and mapping overseas opportunities and promoting legal migration to boost the Indian workforce’s sustainable employment ecosystem and entrepreneurship opportunities. The Ministry has also been coordinating with a number of State governments and stakeholders to disseminate information on the Indian Diaspora and overseas employment opportunities.
• With an aim of promoting safe and legal migration as well as overseas career prospects, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has launched the ‘Surakshit Jayen Prashikshit Jayen – Go Safe, Go Trained’ campaign to raise awareness and facilitate safe and legal migration. The goal of this campaign is to raise public awareness about the importance of using safe and legal channels while travelling for job so that well-informed migrants will be able to seamlessly integrate and have a safe and productive stay abroad. This motto has earlier been widely publicized through awareness generation workshops and Pre-Departure Orientation & Training (PDOT) imparted to the prospective migrants.
• To give a further impetus on visibility of Ministry’s unique campaign, a Postal Stamp with a tagline on Surakshit Jayen Prashikshit Jayen is being released on the occasion of the 17^th PBD Convention at Indore, Madhya Pradesh on 8-10 January 2023 to maximize the visibility among the prospective migrants. • From the beginning of history, human sensitivity has revealed an urge for mobility leading to a measure of society’s progress. The history of this mobility or transport is the history of civilization. A well-known and co-ordinated system of transport plays an important role in the sustained economic growth of a country. It has been seen throughout the history of any nation that a proper, extensive and efficient transport provides indispensable mobility for all citizens and goods and contributes to the economic prosperity of a nation. It is a key factor to social, regional and economic cohesion, including the development of rural areas. It is the essential convenience with which people not just connect but progress. Transport is vital to the economic development and social integration of the country.
• The Department of Posts is bringing the history of gradual progression in the modes of transportation in country through 20 beautiful Stamps in the form of Prestige Booklet and mixed Sheetlets. In the ancient times Palanquins were used as mode of transport. Palanquin, also known as palki, derived its name from the Sanskrit word ‘Palanki’ for a bed or couch. A palki was bigger in size and made of wood. There were doors on both sides. A long cylindrical pole was attached to it lengthways through the middle. A palki was usually carried by six or four men. During medieval India Palki were used as most essential wedding transportation means. It was also used to be the conveyance for noble Indian women as well as for Indian landlords of that time. The use of Palanquins is mentioned in literature as early as the Ramayana also. First four stamps depict the different models of palanquins used by people. The introduction of rickshaws in the 1930’s and ever expanding communication system have now made palki an institution of the past and is now used only on special occasions like wedding ceremonies.
• Another set of four stamps portray different modes of transport related to Horse Carriages and Carts. Apart from Palkis, Bullock Carts and Horse Carriages were also used as a major mode of transport since ancient times. They are still used today where modern vehicles are too expensive or the infrastructure does not favour them. A bullock cart or ox cart is a two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicle pulled by oxen. A Tonga is a light horse-drawn carriage used for transportation in India. They are usually pulled by two horses, though some require only one. Tongas and horse carriages are still used in some smaller cities for economic activity, mainly to carry heavy goods within the city limits.
• Further development in the modes of transport could be seen in 19^th century when in around 1880, rickshaws appeared in India. It was first seen in Shimla and then, 20 years later in Kolkata. Here they are initially used by Chinese traders to transport goods. Pulling a rickshaw was often the first job for peasants migrating to these cities. Rickshaw began as a two or three-wheeled passenger cart, called a pulled rickshaw, generally pulled by one man with one passenger. The first known use of the term was in 1887. Over time, cycle rickshaws, auto rickshaws, and school rickshaws came into usage. The set of four stamps depict different versions of Rickshaws used by countrymen.
• As early as 1898 the first motorcar was seen on Indian roads. Cars had to be imported into India. These are truly western vintage models. Local assembly of cars began during the years between the World Wars and assembly units were set up in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was the origin of Rolls-Royce’s claim of making the “Best car in the world”. This Vintage Car is considered to be the most valuable Vintage car. Austin Twenty is a large car that was introduced by Austin after the end of the First World War in April 1919 and continued in production until 1930. After the Austin 20/6 model was introduced in 1927, the first model was referred to as the Austin 20/4. In the category of Vintage Cars, another famous model is the Chevrolet Series BA Confederate which is an American vehicle manufactured by Chevrolet in 1932. Production slipped significantly from over 6 lakh cars to around 3 lakhs during Great Depression, but was still sufficient for Chevrolet to retain first place in the American car sales table. The set of beautiful four stamps depict the exclusive models of Vintage Cars.
• Public transport is the lifeline of social mobility. Passenger Road Transport Service (PRTS) is an essential, connected to the economic and social development of the nation. Different means of public transport comprises of Trams, Metros, Buses and Double decker buses. The advent of British colonialism saw trams being introduced in many cities including Mumbai and Kolkata. They are still in use in Kolkata and provide an emission-free means of transport. Buses make up over 90% of public transport in Indian cities and serve as a cheap and convenient mode of transport for all classes of society. Metro has become another very popular means of transport in few major cities of the country. The set of 4 stamps portray the means of public transport beautifully.

• Boats, boat-building and traditions of connecting water-based communications have always been rich and low cost convenient transport in Bangladesh. This is because of the geography of the country, which is part of the biggest deltaic plain in the world, sheltering the one of the most densely populated nations. About 50% of Bangladesh is covered in a vast river system.
• Waterways and boats are thus understandably an integral part of the country’s communication system. While sea vessels from the Bay of Bengal adopted exotic styles due to the influences of foreign traders, the wooden boats of the inland waterways developed their shapes and forms free from foreign influences into more than 50 different types. These riverboats were built using skills and technologies that have been passed down orally by boat-builders from generation to generation. Traditional country boats vary in design, size and construction materials. They would be either of Bainkata type or of flat bottom type. A bainkata type boat would have a golui fore and a spoon shaped hull whereas a flat bottom type would have neither. Commonly used timber in boats making are from local woods Jarul (Dipterucarpus turbinatus), Sal (Shorea robusta), Sundari (Heritiera fomes) and Burma teak (Tectons grandis). River and boat are central to traditional Bengali culture like Bhatiali, a traditional form of folk music about boating, fishing and rivers and they fascinated generations of Bengali artists and poets. In fact, without boats one can’t but think of riverine Bangladesh.
• This is why, boats have been part and parcel of our day-to-day life.
• নৌকা, নৌপথে যাতায়াত এবং নৌকা-নির্মাণের পরম্পরা বাংলাদেশে অতিপ্রাচীন ও অত্যন্ত সমৃদ্ধ। বিশ্বের সব চেয়ে সক্রিয় ব-দ্বীপ বলে খ্যাত এ ভূ-খন্ডের ভৌগোলিক বিশেষত্বের জন্যই এটা হয়েছে। শত শত নদ-নদী এবং হাওড়, বাওড় ও বিল নামের অসংখ্য জলাশয়ে পরিপূর্ণ এই দেশ।
• জলময় এ দেশের জনজীবনের এক অবিচ্ছেদ্য অঙ্গ নৌপথ ও নৌযান। বঙ্গোপসাগরের ঢেউ সামাল দেয়া আর ভিনদেশি সওদাগরের চাহিদা মেটানোর জন্যই হয়তো এ দেশের দক্ষিণ উপকূলে গড়া নৌকার আদল ভিন্নতর হয়েছে। দেশের অভ্যন্তরে ব্যবহৃত নৌকার আকার-আকৃতিতে বৈচিত্র্য অপেক্ষাকৃত বেশি এবং বৈদেশিক প্রভাব কম। নদ-নদীর উপযোগী এমন প্রায় ৫০ ধরণের নৌকা আজও পাওয়া যায়। নৌকা নির্মাতাদের মৌখিক বর্ণনার মাধ্যমে এর নির্মাণকৌশল বংশ পরম্পরায় টিকে আছে। এ সব নৌকার ভিন্নতা রয়েছে মূলত এর কলেবর, সৌষ্ঠব এবং নির্মাণশৈলী অথবা নির্মাণ-সামগ্রীতে। ভিন্ন ভিন্ন নৌকার ভিন্ন ভিন্ন নাম প্রচলিত আছেঃ ‘কুন্দা’, ‘সওদাগরি’, ‘ডিঙ্গি’, ‘খাসি’ ইত্যাদি। নৌকা-নির্মাণে সচরাচর জারুল, শাল, সুন্দরী ও সেগুন কাঠ ব্যবহৃত হয়। নদী, বিল, নৌকা ও মাঝিই বাংলাদেশের লোকশিল্প ও লোকসাহিত্যের চিরন্তন উপাদান। নৌকা চালানো, মাছধরা এবং নদীমাতৃক জীবনকে উপজীব্য করে গ্রন্থিত বাংলার লোকসংগীত ‘ভাটিয়ালি’ আজও লক্ষ মানুষকে সম্মোহিত করে এবং সব প্রজন্মের কবি, সাহিত্যিক ও শিল্পীকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে চলেছে।

About : 

• The Indian Armed Forces, had an entirely different role to play, after India attained Independence. They now had the sacred purpose of defending the Motherland from aggression. Immediately after independence, they were called upon to safeguard India’s frontiers against the Pakistani invaders in Jammu and Kashmir. The jawans took up the challenge and performed remarkable deeds of valour, courage, endurance and self-sacrifice in repelling and defeating the invaders. In recognition of the supreme sacrifices made by the armed forces personnel, the Government of India instituted new Gallantry Awards for them, the highest being Param Vir Chakra.
• Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid PVC was posted in the 4^th Battalion of the Grenadiers which was sent to the Khem Karan Sector when hostilities broke out between India and Pakistan in 1965. CQMH Hamid performed deeds of super human daring during the war, facing a Pakistani attack comprising of a Regiment of Patton tanks. Commanding a recoil-less gun detachment with his gun mounted on a jeep, he knocked out the leading enemy tank and then swiftly changing his position, he sent another enemy tank up in flames. But the enemy shelling and tank fire were so intense that he had to lay down his life in an uneven fight. Havildar Hamid’s brave action inspired his comrades who put up a gallant fight and beat back the heavy tank assault by the enemy. He was posthumously awarded the ‘Param Vir Chakra’ in 1966.

• Cars have been produced in Australia since the turn of the century, and have become an integral part of everyone’s daily life. In 1950 there was one car for every 6.46 Australians, in 1960 it was one for every 3.68, and now the figure is one for every 1.7 people. The stamps show four cars which have been significant for Australians.
• The Ford Coupe Utility was the first ‘ute‘, designed in Geelong by the Ford Design Group under Lewis Bandt. It was both a passenger vehicle and a light truck, and went on sale in 1934 for about £280 ($560).
• The GMH Holden 48-215 (later to be widely, if unofficially, known as the FX) was fully built in Australia. The first one was completed in November 1948, and they were sold for £733 ($1466).
• The Austin Lancer, introduced in 1958 by the British Motor Corporation, sold for £1026 ($2050). It was based on the British Wolseley 1500 model and Australian content was claimed to be 96 per cent.
• The Chrysler Valiant R Series was assembled in Adelaide for imported components. It was priced at £1299 ($2598), and was an immediate success when it was released in January 1962.
