Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi : 

• The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in Delhi was constructed to host 9^th Asian Games in 1982. The massive facility in an all-purpose sports arena hosting football and other sporting events, as well as large-scale entertainment events. The stadium can accommodate 75000 spectators. It is one of the biggest stadiums in India and the 57^th the largest in the world. The upcoming Commonwealth Games – 2010 will be held in this stadium from October 03-14, 2010. The stadium will also have two new venues, four synthetic greens for the Lawn Bowls event and a 2500 seat gymnasium for the weightlifting event. In addition 150 m long tunnel is being constructed for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the Athletics Events of XIX commonwealth Games.

Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi : 

• Talkatora Indoor Stadium at New Delhi was constructed to host 9^th Asian Games in 1982 with recycle building materials and fly ash and boasting on heat reflective glass. This is dome shaped stadium and eco-friendly with solar lights, energy efficiency lights, rain water harvesting and the wonderful green lawns. Talkatora Stadium is the unique example of modern architecture skills. It can accommodate 2,700 spectators. In this complex, boxing event of Commonwealth Games 2010 will be held on from 05-13^th October 2010.

• Indepex-Asiana 2000 is the 14^th Asian International Stamp Exhibition being organised by the Department of Posts, Government of India in co-operation with the Philatelic Congress of India and under the patronage of Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP) and the recognition of Federation of International de Philatelie (FIP). It will be hosted at Netaji Indoor Stadium, Calcutta from 7^th to 12^th December, 2000. Indepex Asiana 2000 is the second Asian International Philatelic Exhibition, hosted by India. It holds a special place in international philately, as it commemorates 50 years of the Republic of India, and also the new millennium. It is being planned in a spectacular way with all the conveniences and facilities that go with such exhibitions. It will give an opportunity to the Asia and Pacific philatelic community to display their collections to a discerning international audience.
• Calcutta, the host city of the exhibition, is one among the four major metropolitan centres of India and the capital city of the state of West Bengal. It is a fascinating city, vibrating with life and having a population of over 10 million. The venue of the exhibition will be the Netaji Indoor Stadium. Calcutta, an air-conditioned indoor stadium-cum-amphitheatre which is a proud landmark of the city. The logo of Indepex-Asiana 2000, designed by Shri Sankha Samanta encaptures the first sunrise at the dawn of the millennium, as witnessed at Katchal, an island in the Nicobar group of islands, India. The sun is seen as rising from the ocean waves. The nine rays emanating from the sun symbolises the ‘navaras‘ or the nine moods described by Bharata, an ancient Indian aesthetician, in his writings of Natyashastra (200BC-200AD). The drawing of the waves is in the form of an ‘alpana‘ which is a decorative and ceremonial form of traditional folk art in West Bengal. The logo design may also be seen as a blossoming of flower, symbolising the joy of a new beginning, the exploration of the magical world of stamps.
• On the occasion the Department of Posts is issuing a set of 4 stamps on the flora and fauna of Manipur and Tripura with the objective of focussing public attention on the rich bio-diversity of North-East India.
• Siroi Lily
  Siroi Lily (Lilium macklinae), an Iris species, is a beautiful lily found only in the upper reaches of Sirohi hill ranges of Manipur. The plant grows in the Sirohi Kasom area of the hills on the windward side and eastern flank. It starts flowering with the advent of spring and continues to flower for about two months.
• Sangai Deer
  Sangai Deer (Cervus eldi eldi) or brow antlered deer is a sub-species of the deer available only in Manipur. The deer is distinctive for its peculiar bow shaped antler, unique body structure and its elegant movement, which is often described as dancing. At one time it was considered to have become extinct. Systematic efforts to conserve the species started from 1950 onwards and has succeeded in arresting the declining trend in the population of Sangais. Today the Keibul Lamjao National Park abounds with more than 150 Sangais, an appreciable progress from the 14 heads counted in 1974.
  
• Wild Guava
  Wild Guava (Psidium guineense) is a rare plant of India found only in Tripura. The fruit of wild guava is edible but it is smaller in size than the guava and sour in taste. The plant is of smaller bushy type but if protected attains the size of a small tree. Constant depletion due the firewood collection is endangering this plant, and special protection is now under consideration.
  
• Slow Loris
  Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) is a round-headed, round-eyed lemur found in Tripura and adjoining parts of North-East India. Three geographical races are known, in India. Very distinctive is a brown stripe, marking the middle line of its back and terminating on the crown; distinctive also are the brown circles round its lustrous, owl-like eyes. The Slow Loris is believed to spend the day in sleep waking at dusk to hunt for food.
  
• A miniature sheet featuring the four stamps is also being brought out, which in addition to Indepex Asiana 2000, will also commemorate the ‘Explore India in the Millennium Year‘ programme of the Ministry of Tourism. The First Day Cover portrays the venue, Netaji Indoor Stadium Calcutta and the logo of Indepex-Asiana 2000.

Special postage stamps have been issued on the occasion of the 19^th, 20^th, 23^rd and 25^th Olympic Meets. The Department is now very happy to issue this set of 2 stamps on the ‘Spirit of Olympism’ on the occasion of the 26^th Olympic Meet which also marks hundred years of Olympics.

Design : One of the stamps depicts the Marble stadium of Athens with an impression of Parthenon in the background and the other, the Olympic torch which has been carried since the first meet. The First Day Cover is a visual depiction of the Olympic motto. The torch is repeated on the cancellation.

• The Ancient Olympic Games were started in 776 B.C. at Olympia, Greece. Thereafter, the Games, were held at four year intervals until they were abolished in 393 A.D. During the period of the Games, there would be a complete cessation in conflicts and wars between participating City States of ancient Greece and eventually came to be known as ‘Olympic Truce‘.
• The modern Olympic Games were first held in Athens in 1896 through the single-minded efforts and determination of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a brilliant educator and scholar, but not an athlete. He recognised that sports tournaments open to all countries in the world would represent the ideals of fraternity and equality. It would generate the sense of brotherhood amongst peoples and nations. It is these ideas together with the ideas of the Ancients which constitute the ‘Spirit of Olympism‘. In Olympic Games of 1896, only 13 countries participated. This number increased to 171 in 1992, representing almost all the nations on earth.
• The Olympic Games at Atlanta scheduled in July-August 1996 celebrates the centenary of the modern olympic movement. This includes a rededication to the ideals of the olympic movement as set out by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and as reflected in the ‘Spirit of Olympism’ namely, ‘ALTIUS’, ‘CITIUS’, ‘FORTIUS’.

• The city of Delhi has been the vertex of social and political life of the sub-continent. Through centuries it has been fought for and defended, and often razed and pillaged. It was even deserted more than once, only to rise again like the mythical phoenix. The seat of power of many in monarch and dynasty, Delhi bears the mark of a very extraordinary history. Some speak of the seven cities of Delhi built by successive conquerors, each adding his share to the pageant. The ravages of time have laid low many a splendorous monument; yet history stands writ on the ruins that still brave the batterings of nature. The first city of Delhi, Lal Kot was raised by the Tomar Rajput King Anangpal in 11^th century. The legendary hero Prithviraj Chauhan enlarged and fortified the rugged citadel with massive ramparts and renamed it Quila Raj Pithora. The soaring tower Qutab Minar built by the Slave King, Qutb–ud–din Aibak and his successor Iltutmish, still stands sentinel to the imperial battlements erected there. The other cities were built at Siri, Tughlakabad, Jahanpanah, Kotla Feroz Shah, Purana Quila and Shahjahanabad. The last of the conquerors, influenced by the living past of Delhi, raised with greatest care the new Capital, New Delhi. The density of Delhi appears to lie in being built, rebuilt and constantly built upon. The process continues today, but for a different cause. Having hosted the First Asian Games in 1951, Delhi is now getting ready for the IX Asian Games in 1982.
• The First Asian Games were held in the National Stadium which was built beyond the solemn India Gate facing the regal Rashtrapati Bhavan that crowns the Raisina Hill. The stadium is now being renovated and will be the venue of Men’s Hockey matches. The main athletic stadium is being built near the tombs of the Lodi Emperors who ruled in the 15^th century. It will have a capacity of 75,000. Apart from various athletic events, this stadium will be the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies. A two-tier structure, 23 metre high, it will have an 8-lane synthetic track. The space enclosed by the tracks will be used for soccer. There will be an office area built into the stadium below the upper tier. A spacious Press Centre, equipped with world-wide telecommunications facilities, will also be located in the stadium. A computerised communication system will provide information within seconds about the events taking place in all centres. The stadium will be flood lit to suit colour TV coverage. A giant electronic score board will display the results of various events in Hindi and English simultaneously.
• An indoor stadium, being built near the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on the banks of the Yamuna, will be the venue of Badminton, Gymnastics and Volleyball. It will have a seating capacity of 25,000. The bowl like superstructure is supported by eight RCC pylons rising to a height of 44 metres. The arena can be divided into two with the help of a sound-proof collapsible partition so that two events can be held simultaneously. By the side of this stadium a Cycling Velodrome is being built according to international specifications. It will have a minimum slope of 7° rising to a maximum of 38°. The width of the track will be 7 metres and length 333.33 metres.
• Adjacent to the lush grounds of Rashtrapati Bhavan, a swimming complex is being constructed. It will have three separate pools for warming up, for the main events and for diving. A Tennis Stadium with a capacity of 1,400 and two more courts will be added to the already existing Tennis Complex having nine courts. A number of other stadia in Delhi will be used for various games. All these are being renovated and modernised. A new hall is being built in Pragati Maidan Exhibition Complex for Table Tennis and Boxing. A new shooting range of international specifications is being built at Tughlakabad, where the third city of Delhi was built by Ghiyasuddin Tughlak in 1321 A.D.
• Siri was the second city of Delhi raised by Allauddin Khilji (1296-1316). Amidst the remains of its former glory, the Asian Games Village Complex is being built to provide comfortable accommodation as well as facilities for recreation and practice for 5,000 competitors and officials who accompany them. Each of its dwelling units will have an open terrace and a private garden. The Community Hall, with a capacity of 2000, will be the venue of Weight Lifting. A special feature of the village will be the kitchen-cum-dining complex which can cater to 2000 persons at a time.

• New Delhi is fast preparing for hosting the IX Asian Games commencing from 19 November, 1982. Construction activities are in full swing to provide the necessary facilities for holding various events during the ASIAD which promises to be amongst one of the most spectacular events in the history of Asian sports. This issue, fourth in the series of special stamps on Asian Games, features the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which would be the venue for sports like football and for various athletic events. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium would be a prominent centre of attraction during the Games. Besides colourful events of sports and athletics, this Stadium would be the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Games.
• Aesthetically designed, this Stadium would be one of the very modern and sophisticated stadia in the world with a capacity of 75,000 seated comfortably in two-tiers of stands. The Stadium will have 8-lane track laid with Olymparene-78, a most modern synthetic track cover for athletic events. All timing equipment would be electronically controlled, while photo finishing cameras would ensure the most modern judging standards in athletics.
• The Stadium will have two giant scoreboards of matrix type capable of displaying results simultaneously in Hindi and English. It will be flood-lit for conducting events at night and for enabling colour TV transmission. The Main Press Centre for the ASIAD will be housed in this Stadium where results from all the venues will be available through an elaborate computerised Central Information System. The Press Centre will have all modern facilities to enable the World Press to function as well as at similar international meets. Radio and TV will also have ample facilities for transmission direct from the Stadium.
• The facilities created in this Stadium would also be available for use in future by athletes, sportsmen or trainees at the times of games being conducted or when coaching camps are being held. It would be one of the major landmarks of New Delhi.
