About : 

• Shaheed Sheikh Kamal (5 August 1949 – 15 August 1975) was the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and younger brother of Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
• He completed his matriculation from Shaheen School, Dhaka in 1967 and higher Secondary Certificate Examination from Dhaka College in 1969. He was the General Secretary of the Chatro League in Dhaka College. He practiced sitar at Chhayanaut, a school of music. At the same time, he was involved in diverse cultural activities and a keen sportsman. Kamal was an organizer of the Mukti Bahini. Kamal received war time commission in Bangladesh Army during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
• He worked as the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) of General Osmani the Commander-in-Chief of the Mukti Bahini, during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. After independence, he left the military at the rank of Captain to return to University of Dhaka from where he graduated with Honours in sociology. Days before his tragic demise on 15 August 1975, Kamal completed his Masters Degree in sociology from Dhaka University. On 14 July 1975, he married an athlete, Sultana Khuki.
• Kamal, an avid sportsman, founded the Abahani in 1972, a popular sporting club of Bangladesh. He enjoyed cricket, volleyball, and other sports. Abahani went on to win many local championships. He was killed with the rest of his family on 15 August 1975.

Issued for : The Department of Posts, has over the years, commemorated the contribution of Indian women in various spheres, the struggle for independence, the social reform movement, the political field, education and other areas of nation building. In 1998, a special stamp was issued to commemorate the contribution of Indian women in the field of space technology and aviation. Through the stamp being issued today to commemorate the memory of Arati Gupta (Saha), one of the pioneering figures in women’s Aquatics, the achievements of outstanding Indian women in the field of sports is highlighted.

Design : The Stamp design portrays the legendary swimmer Arati Gupta (Saha) in action. The First Day Cover carries a photograph cherished by her, showing her with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.

About : 

• Arati Gupta (Saha) was born in Calcutta, West Bengal on 24^th September, 1940. Arati was initiated in swimming at the early age of four, and her inherent talent was noticed by Sachin Nag, a swimming ace of yore. Becoming a member of the Hatkhola Swimming Club, her passionate involvement with the sport, led to outstanding achievements in the field. Between 1945 and 1951 she won 22 State Competitions with an all-India record in 1949. A landmark in her prodigious swimming career was her participation in Helsinki Olympics in 1952 along with Dolly Nazir.
  
• The crowning glory came in 1959 when she swam across the English Channel on 29^th September, from Cape Gris Nez in France to Sandgate in England. She had to swim 42 miles and it took 16 hours 20 minutes. The ice-cold water could not make a dent in her courage and determination. She was the first woman in Asia to perform that outstanding and courageous feat. She brought glory not only to herself but also to the country when she hoisted the flag of India at Sandgate. The achievement was a culmination of long years of hard work, perseverance, devotion and determination. She was awarded ‘Padmashri’ in the year 1960, and in 1962, she married Dr. Arun Gupta. She succumbed to incurable Jaundice and passed away on 23^rd August, 1994.

About : 

• Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on 28 July 1958, and later moved with his family to Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. He had a strong desire to play for his junior high school basketball team, although he was not really tall enough and lacked the natural ability for the game. But he was always noted for his determination and made the team through hard work. Long hours of practice turned him into a skillful player, and his tenacity later won him a spot on the Simon Fraser University junior varsity.
  
• On 12 November 1976, Terry escaped from an automobile accident with a sore right knee. In December the pain recurred, but he ignored it and finished the basketball season. Early in March 1977 the knee rapidly deteriorated. A bone specialist diagnosed cancer. The night before doctors amputated his right leg, Terry received a copy of a magazine describing a one-legged runner. That night Terry Fox decided to run across Canada.
  
• He recovered rapidly from the surgery and withstood the painful chemotherapy treatments that followed. The cancer had apparently not spread. He was grateful that cancer research saved his life; nevertheless, the suffering he had seen at the cancer clinic had disturbed him greatly. The thought that he could promote research and encourage other cancer victims made him more determined than ever to run across Canada. He began training in February 1979 and ran every day, no matter how foul the weather. Despite blisters, bone bruises, lost toenails, cysts, and bleeding sores, he piled up over 5000 km of training. Meanwhile, he worked on the logistics of the Marathon of Hope.
  
• On 12 April 1980, he dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean at St. John’s, Newfoundland, and set off for the Pacific Coast. The next day a 65 km-an-hour wind slowed him down, but he covered 32 km. The following day he did 26 km on an icy, blizzard-swept road. By 11 July, when 10,000 people welcomed him to Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, donations for cancer research were pouring in. In August, he was past Sault Ste. Marie and breezing up hills, perhaps better described as mountains. However, a persistent cough had appeared, and on 1 September 1980, after he had run 35 km, severe chest pains forced him into hospital at Thunder Bay. Doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to both lungs. Terry died on 28 June 1981, having raised more than $23,000,000 for cancer research.
