About :

  • The history of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) in India is a tale of unyielding dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment. For a century, these valiant caregivers have played a pivotal role in the Armed Forces Health Care systems, extending their Services to soldiers, their families, and various humanitarian efforts.
  • The Military Nursing Service was the earliest type of nursing to evolve in the late 19th Century. Modern nursing was founded after the Crimean War between Turkey and Russia in 1854-1856. The Army Nursing Service was established in 1888. In 1896, the Nursing Service was renamed as Indian Army Nursing Service. In 1914, 473 Indian nurses were appointed during World War I, who went all over with the Indian soldiers and rendered exceptional services. On 1st October 1926, the permanent Nursing Service came into being with 55 nurses. During World War II, Indian nurses were at the war front with courage and valour; many nurses were taken Prisoners of War and many laid down their lives for the country. On 15th September 1943, an ordinance was promulgated to constitute a force to be called the Military Nursing Service (India) as part of the Armed Forces of India.
  • The terms and conditions for the grant of regular commission in the MNS were laid by Army Instruction 274/50 on 12 August 1950. The cadre strength of service has grown from 1110 to 5368. The Officers of Military Nursing Service undergo further specialisation through Post Basic (PB) BSc, MSc and PB Diploma in clinical specialities. The Military Nursing Service is a Cadre of highly skilled, competent officers.
  • The integration of Military Hospitals and the introduction of modern medical practices enhanced the role of military nurses. The Military Nursing Service has a rich history of dedication and exemplary service in both war and peace. The 1962 Sino-Indian War, 1971 Indo-Pak War and Kargil War underscored the pivotal role of the Military Nursing Service in times of conflict, demonstrating exceptional courage and valour.
  • Military Nursing Officers participated in UN Peacekeeping Missions in Congo, Lebanon, South Sudan and in friendly foreign hospitals, earning respect and admiration on the global stage. They also played a significant role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Care of war-wounded patients in times of agony and despair requires strong determination. Hence, there was a requirement to prepare nurses for the Army. Accordingly, nurses were trained in selected civil hospitals. The Government of India sanctioned two schools of Nursing in 1950 in Pune and Delhi. The schools were gradually upgraded to the College of Nursing and at present, there are six Colleges of Nursing across the country in Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Lucknow. These institutions provide skill-based education for BSc Nursing, Master’s in Nursing Subjects and Post Basic (PB) diploma in 13 clinical specialities.
  • The dedication and devotion to duty exhibited by the officers of the Military Nursing Service have been widely recognised. They have received distinguished honours such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, and Mention in Despatches, along with civilian awards like the Sarojini Khosla Nightingale Award, Nalwa Medal, and Mahila Shiromani Award.
  • On January 26, 2024, history was made when 144 Military Nursing Service officers marched on Kartavya Path during the Republic Day Parade as part of the All-Women Contingent of the Armed Forces Medical Services.

About :

  • The President’s Body Guard was raised at Benaras, in 1773 with 50 Horses and Sowars, and additionally, 50 Horses & Sowars were contributed by Raja Chait Singh of Benaras, to form the Governor’s Body Guard. The Regiment was later christened as Governor General’s Body Guard (GGBG) in 1784, Viceroy’s Bodyguard (VRBG) in 1857, 44 Divisional Reconnaissance Squadron (GGBG) in 1944, Governor General’s Body Guard (GGBG) in 1946, Governor General’s Body Guard (India) in 1947, and The President’s Body Guard (PBG) wef 1950.
  • Being the senior-most Regiment, The PBG has the ‘Right of Line’ over all other Corps/Regiments of the Indian Army, and the Regiment is the Household Cavalry and ‘Personal Troops of The President of India’. The Regiment has dual role, in war – under aegis of the Parachute Formation, subject to approval of the President, and in peace – ceremonial duties at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The PBG is the oldest Horsed Cavalry, Armoured since 1942 (World War II) and Airborne since 1944 (World War II). In consonance with its mandate, each soldier is a trained ‘Cavalry Horse Rider, Paratrooper and Armoured Warrior. Thereby, making the technical skill-set of these soldiers unique and unparalleled in the Indian Army, and the world. The Regiment has the singular distinction of being the only true Airborne Cavalry Regiment in the world.
  • In its exceptional history The PBG has successfully participated in many battles in the pre-independence era and has earned its Battle Honours – namely Java, Ava, Maharajpore, Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Aliwal & Sabraon. Post-independence, the Regiment has been called to arms in all wars, and has been deployed for operations at Chushul (1962) and Gadra Road (1965). In 1971, the Regiment provided protection to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. During Operation VIJAY (1999), Operation PARAKRAM (2000), and Operation SINDOOR (2025) the troops of The PBG continued to serve in operational areas, during extra regimental employment. The personnel of The PBG have been deployed at Super High Altitude Areas in Siachen Glacier since 1993, till date. The Regiment has also contributed troops for the UNPKF in Somalia, Angola, Sierra Leone & Sudan.
  • The PBG is the only Regiment which is permitted two ‘Standards’, namely the President’s Standard of Bodyguard, and the Regimental Standard of The PBG. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first Hon’ble President of India, presented the first ever Standard of Bodyguard, followed by the Regimental Standard of The PBG in 1958. Thereafter, in 1963, Dr S Radhakrishnan, the then Hon’ble President of India, renewed both the Standards.
  • On 30 September 2023 the Regiment completed 250 years of glorious service since its raising. On 16 November 2023, during the Sestercentennial Celebrations (250 years), The PBG was presented a new Standard of Bodyguard, and the Regimental Standard of the PBG was renewed by Smt Draupadi Murmu, The Hon’ble President of India, after a period of 60 years.
  • The PBG has a tradition of two Silver Trumpets and Trumpet Banners. The Presidential Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner was first awarded in 1957 by Dr Rajendra Prasad, the then Hon’ble President of India. This tradition is maintained by each incumbent President, by presentation of a new Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner, to be carried during the respective Presidency. Smt Draupadi Murmu, The Hon’ble President of India, presented her Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner to The PBG on 27 October 2022. In recognition of 75 years of glorious service since the designation as The PBG in 1950, for the first time ever, the Regimental Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner of The PBG will give way to the Diamond Jubilee Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner, by Smt Draupadi Murmu, The Hon’ble President of India, on 30 September 2025.
  • Being a horse holding Regiment, The PBG has won numerous medals at national & international level including one gold medal in Asian Games, (Puissance) National record of 195 cm Show Jumping and has the honour of receiving two Arjuna Awards for Polo and Equestrian Sports. In the current presidency, The PBG has won 170 Medals at the Equestrian Federation of India/ National Level Equestrian Events. The Regiment has established itself as the ‘Army Champion’ at the Army Equestrian Championship held in Bengaluru in 2024.
  • Since 1947, The PBG has served one Governor General and 15 Presidents of India. The Regiment has also escorted all the Heads of States, Presidents and Kings of nations visiting Rashtrapati Bhavan since 1947. The PBG is a unique military unit, intricately woven into the fabric of the history of our Nation, Rashtrapati Bhavan to include the lives & times of each President, and the Indian Army. The PBG is indeed a unique link to our deep cultural connect with the horses, rich heritage of excellence in horsemanship, and the illustrious traditions of Horsed Cavalry in India.

About :

  • The battalion was raised in 1825 as the 2nd Extra Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry at erstwhile Cawnpore. It has a rich and glorious history spanning two centuries, throughout which, the battalion has consistently displayed bravery, resilience and sacrifice across diverse conflicts and terrains.
  • In 1828, it was renamed as 70th Bengal Native Infantry. Early campaigns in which the battalion was inducted include the Battle of Maharajpur (1843) and the Second Sikh War (1848-49), earning battle honours of Punjab, Chillianwallah and Gujarat. Serving with the Indian Expeditionary Force under British rule, the regiment saw action in China (1858-59), Bhutan (1865), and the Second Afghan War (1878-80) where the battalion was honoured with Battle Honours of China, Bhutan and Afghanistan. The saga of courage followed with the Burma War (1885-87) and the Hazara Expedition (1891) where the battle honour of Burma was bestowed on the Battalion. As the 11th Rajputs, the regiment fought in World War I across multiple theatres, including France, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, and later in the Afghan War (1919) earning the Battle Honour of Mesopotamia. Re-designated as the 5th Battalion, 7th Rajput Regiment, it fought its epochal last stand and suffered heavy losses defending Hong Kong during World War II where it earned its last pre-independence battle honour of Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the magnitude of loss of personnel due to death, and being taken prisoners of war was so grave that the battalion had to be demobilised after World War II. Captain Mateen Ahmed Ansari was posthumously awarded with George Cross, the only one held by the entire Rajput Regiment, for his unwavering courage in the face of brutal Japanese forces.
  • The saga of valour does not end here. The Battalion was re-raised as 5th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment in 1962, by Lt Col Brijpal Singh Vr C at Fatehgarh. Post re-raising, the battalion participated in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, and Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, where it again demonstrated its mettle. During Operation Pawan, Hav Naipal Singh was posthumously awarded Vir Chakra for supreme sacrifice against the fierce and resilient LTTE.
  • The battalion also served in Operation Rakshak at challenging locations in the high altitude areas and Operation Vijay. The battalion notably achieved an unscathed tenure during Operation Meghdoot on the challenging Siachen Glacier, a rare feat for any unit guarding the frozen frontier. The Battalion has a unique distinction of presenting Guard Of Honour to three presidents of India, namely Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Dr Pranab Mukherjee and Shri Ramnath Kovind. In the year 2018, the battalion represented the country at a global platform in the Ex SCO Peace Mission held at Chebarkul, Russia, one of a kind exercise which saw participation of seven foreign countries including Russia, China and Pakistan. It was the first instance when Indian and Pakistani forces participated in a friendly military exercise. With four consecutive unit citations in last decade, including 02 x Chief of Army Staff Unit Citation for its challenging tenures in the field at Kupwara and Poonch and 02 x GOC-in-C Unit Citations at Jutogh and Sri Ganganagar for exceptional performance of duties in peace tenure, the battalion is one of the most professional infantry units of the Indian Army.
  • During its glorious 200 years, the Rajputs have proved their mettle while fighting in frozen glaciers, mountains, plains, beaches and deserts. Its sterling performance has always showcased professionalism at the epitome of excellence. The brave hearts from this unit have risen to the occasion and displayed their enduring spirit, with utter disregard to their personal safety, laying down their lives in the service of the nation. Due to its glorious history, presently the battalion is acknowledged as Prachand Paanch.
The list of gallantry/distinguished awards bestowed upon the battalion includes 1 Param Vishisht Seva Medal, 3 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, 2 Vir Chakra, 1 Shaurya Chakra, 16 Sena Medal (Gallantry), 2 Yudh Seva Medal, 5 Mentions-in-Despatches, 25 Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards, 19 Vice Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards, 82 GOC-in-C Commendation Cards and 2 Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Commendation Cards.

About :

  • Kittur, formerly known as ‘Geejaganahalli’ became renowned as the seat of power for the Kittur kings between 1585 and 1824 A.D. The principality was founded by brothers Hiremalla Shetty and Chikkamalla Shetty, who were gifted the Kittur area by Adilshahi, the king of Bijapur, in recognition of their valor and service.
  • Initially, the capital was located in Sampagaon, and Kittur was governed by 12 notable kings, with Allappagouda Desai, Mudimallappagouda Desai, and Mallasarja Desai being the most prominent. Under Allappagouda’s rule, Kittur’s fort and palace were constructed, establishing it as a significant center.
  • King Mallasarja (1782-1816 A.D.) brought great fame to Kittur. However, his achievements drew the envy of Baji Rao II, the Peshwa of Pune, who conspired to detain him, leading to Mallasarja’s untimely death in 1816. Queen Channamma, his second wife, took on the reins of administration after the death of Shivalinga Rudrasarja, the last king.
  • The Struggle Against British Rule
    • The British began to interfere in Kittur’s administration after Shivalinga’s death in 1824. Collector Thackeray’s rude conduct and seizure of the treasury sparked Queen Channamma’s defiance. On October 23, 1824, in a historic battle, her forces defeated the British, resulting in Thackeray’s death at the hands of Amatur Balappa, a brave bodyguard.
    • However, following negotiations that failed, the British launched a massive attack on Kittur on December 3, 1824. After three days of fierce fighting, the Kittur army was betrayed and ultimately defeated. Queen Channamma was captured and imprisoned at Bailahongal Fort, where she passed away on February 2, 1829. Her indomitable spirit and resistance made her a pioneering figure in India’s struggle for independence, earning her the title “Pole Star of Indian Independence.”
  • Legacy of Resistance
    • Even after her defeat, Queen Channamma’s legacy inspired further uprisings. Loyalists like Sangolli Rayanna led significant rebellions against British rule. Despite facing severe reprisals, including executions, their efforts showcased the undying patriotism and courage that characterized Kittur’s fight for freedom.
  • Kittur Palace and Monuments
    • The Kittur Fort and Palace, built between 1660 and 1691 A.D. during Allappagouda Desai’s reign, are architectural marvels, although the British later demolished much of the palace. Today, the ruins provide a glimpse into its grandeur, featuring guest rooms, a Darbar hall, and unique water supply systems, including copper pipes and stone tanks.

Born on 1501 at Machheri, Alwar, Rajasthan, India

Died on 5 Nov, 1556 at Panipat, Haryana, India

About :

  • Samrat Hemchandra Vikramaditya or Hemu was the last Hindu emperor of India. Being a member of an ordinary family, he did extraordinary and brilliant deeds in the history of India. Through his ideas and visions, he made tremendous efforts to make his country, Bharat a powerful nation.
  • He was a capable administrator, a military genius, an able politician and a far-sighted statesman. In true sense, he was the follower of the great Hindu ruler Prithvi Raj Chauhan who fought bravely in the battlefield and sacrificed his life for the country. Hemu, was one of the greatest freedom fighters in the annals of Indian history, who struggled hard against the foreign rulers.
  • Hemu was born in 1501, in a village Machheri, three miles away from Rajgarh in the region of Alwar (Rajasthan) in Dhusar Brahmin (Bhargava) family. His father Puran Das was a Purohit and a religious person. Saint Puran Das took Sanyas and migrated to Vrindavan to live with famous saint Harivansh of the Vallabha Sampradai Sect.
  • The family shifted to Qutabpur, a village of Dhusar Brahmins, in Rewari (Haryana) for better prospects. Hemu was brought-up and educated there. He studied Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic. During his childhood he was fond of wrestling and horse-riding.
  • Based at Rewari, which was on main route of traders from Iran, Iraq to Delhi, Hemu started supplying cereals to Sher Shah’s army. Later on, he took up supply of saltpeter (gunpowder) to his army.
  • After Shershah Suri’s death on May 22, 1545 A.D., Jalal Khan, the younger son of the former, assumed the title of Islam Shah and became the ruler. Islam Shah recognized the capability and the administrative skills of Hemu and therefore made him his personal advisor. In 1550 AD, Hemu accompanied Islam Shah to Punjab when he was deputed along with other high officers to receive Mirza Kamran, the second son of Babar in the fort of Rohtas. Hemu was soon promoted as the Chief of intelligence or Daroga-ai-dak chauki i.e. Superintendent of Posts. In 1552 and 1553, Hemu held positions as Governor of Punjab and Delhi state also.
  • In November 1554 Islam Shah died and his 12 years old son Firoz Khan became the ruler, who was killed within three days by Adil Shah Suri. His original name was Mubrez Khan or Mubarak Khan. The new king Adil Shah was an indolent, pleasure-seeker, drunkard and debauch. He faced revolts on all sides. Adil Shah looked to Hemu as Chief Advisor and practically entrusted all his works to him. Hemu now became the Prime Minister and Chief of the Afghan Army.
  • Most of the Afghan governors revolted against Adil Shah and refused to pay the taxes. Hemu went to various states in North India to crush these revolts. Hemu fought 22 battles and won all of them. Battles took place between Hemu and Ibrahim who was a claimant for the sultanate and the former was always victorious. Sultan Mohammad, who had assumed the kingly title in Bengal, was also defeated.
  • When Humayun returned to India to recover his lost throne, Adil Shah sent Hemu northwards to oppose him, retiring himself to Chunar. When Humayun met with fatal accident on January 26, 1556 AD, Hemu remained in the field to prevent Akbar from taking effective possession of his father’s kingdom. Hemu consolidated his army and went from Gwalior to Agra. He defeated Iskandar Khan Uzbeg, Governor of Agra. He occupied Agra with its huge treasure and equipments, and proceeded towards Delhi. Tardi Beg Khan, the Mughal Governor of Delhi, frightened and immediately sent a dispatch to Akbar and Bairam Khan and demanded adequate reinforcements for the defence of the capital. Bairam Khan sent his ablest Commander Pir Mohammad Sherwani with a big army. In Delhi, the battle was fought at Tuglakabad. Hemu defeated the Mughals. Hemu won Delhi after a day’s battle on October 6, 1556 AD. Nearly 3000 soldiers died in the battle. Tardi Beg fled away. Hemu entered Delhi victoriously under a royal canopy.
  • He occupied Delhi and declared his independent status. He had his coronation or Rajyabhishek at Purana Qila in the presence of all the Afghans and Rajput commanders with all religious ceremonies. He issued coins in his name and assumed the historic name ‘Vikramaditya’ or Raja Bikramjit. He reorganized the army and made certain appointments, without removing any Afghan. He also made significant reforms in the mercantile system. He dismissed all the corrupt officers and also paid attention towards protection of cow and totally prohibited cow’s slaughter.
  • Though Hemchandra Vikramaditya ruled for only 29 days, yet it was a historical event in the history of India. He re-established the Hindu Kingdom after centuries of foreign rule. World famous Historian R.C. Majumdar called it, “a unique episode in the history of India during the Muslim rule.”
  • On the news of the fall of Delhi from Akbar’s control, the Mughal army at Kalanaur lost heart and many commanders refused to fight Hemu. They advised Akbar to retreat to Kabul, where he would be safer. However, Bairam Khan refused and insisted him to fight with Hemu.
  • The battle between Hemu and Mughals was finally fought at Panipat on November 5, 1556 AD. Hemu was captured in an unconscious, almost dead state. Bairam Khan desired Akbar to earn the title of Ghazi by flashing his sword on the captive. The forces of Akbar conquered the Sarkar of Alwar which was the home of Hemu.
  • The vengeance of the Mughals continued. The clan of Dhusar Bhargavas were hounded, brutally beheaded and pyramid of their skulls were built throughout the region. Such painting of Akbar’s time is on display in National Archives, New Delhi whose replica can be seen in the War Museum at Panipat. So was the end of one of the glorious periods of the Indian History.
  • No praise can be too great for Hemu’s bold endeavour to re-establish indigenous rule at Delhi after more than 350 years of foreign domination.

Name : Durgavati

Born on 5 Oct, 1524 at Kalinjar Fort, Banda district, Uttar Pradesh, India

Died on 24 Jun, 1564 at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India

About :

  • Rani Durgavati, the descendant of the famous Chandela dynasty of Mahoba, and the queen of the Gond kingdom of GarhaKatanga, took on the might of the Mughal Empire with great courage and leadership.
  • Gond tribe is a prominent tribe in central India known for their rich cultural heritage and resilience. Rani Durgavati, like many other women of her times, chose to embrace death rather than falling into the hands of the enemy. It is said that since she was born on the festival of Durgashtami, her parents named her Durgavati, after the fierce Hindu goddess Durga. She proved to be a human embodiment of the deity. She is remembered today for her sacrifices and as a defender of her culture and a symbol of pride and honour.
  • Durgavati was born on 5 October 1524 in Kalinjar, one of the most important forts of medieval India, which lies in the Banda district of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was held by her father Raja Salbahan of Ratha and Mahoba, a scion of the famous Chandelas who had built the Khajuraho temples and had rebuffed the attacks of Mahmud Ghazni in the past. At the age of 18, she was married to Dalpat Shah, son of the Gond King Sangram Shah of GarhaKatanga, strengthening an alliance between the two royal families.
  • The small kingdom of GarhaKatanga emerged in central India in the aftermath of Timur’s invasion (1398), when the feeble Sultanate rule over this region was thrown off by King Yadavrai. The name of the kingdom was derived from the principal town called ‘Garha’ and a village called ‘Katanga’ located 4 miles west of the city of Jabalpur.
  • Dalpat Shah died in the year 1548, leaving behind a minor son, Bir Narayan, as the heir. Rani Durgavati installed Bir Narayan on the throne and she took on the reins of the government. She was assisted by two able ministers, Adhar Kayastha and Man Brahman. Rani Durgavati administered the kingdom and took it to such high levels of prosperity that people paid taxes in gold coins and elephants. She constructed reservoirs such as the Ranital, Cherital and Adhartal, for the benefit of her people. She was a patron of learning, and allowed Acharya Bitthalnath to establish a seat of the Pushtimarg cult at Garha.
  • Rani Durgavati consolidated the boundaries of her kingdom. She personally led her army to quell rebellions. Her kingdom stretched 300 miles from east to west and 160 miles from north to south. According to a contemporary Persian source, the TarikhiFirishta, Durgavati repulsed Baz Bahadur, the ruler of Malwa, who had attacked her kingdom between 1555 and 1560.
  • The Mughal Governor of KaraManikpur, Asaf Khan, launched a completely unprovoked attack on Rani’s kingdom in 1564. Equipped with a large imperial army, Asaf Khan marched into GarhKatanga and arrived at Damoh. Durgavati with her small force was able to defeat the Mughals and push back them at least three times. However, the Mughals regrouped with a strong contingent comprising 10,000 cavalry, infantry and artillery and overwhelmed her forces.
  • The Rani continued fighting until two arrows struck her, one in her right temple and the other in her neck. She pulled them out but fell unconscious. On regaining consciousness, she realised that she had lost the day. She asked her mahavat, Adhar Baghela, to kill her with his dagger. Baghela refused but offered to take her to a safe place. The Rani realised that they would not be able to go too far and would soon fall into the hands of the enemy. She now took out her dagger and stabbed herself in her heart. Thus, on the 24 June, 1564, died the brave Rani Durgavati who chose death against dishonor. Her men cremated her in a narrow mountain pass some 12 miles from Jabalpur.
  • The Mughal encounter with the Rani was documented by Abul Fazl, Akbar’s chronicler and other Persian writers. Abul Fazl wrote of Durgavati that she was a combination of beauty, grace and manlike courage and bravery. The story of Durgavati was also chronicled many years later by the British Colonel, Sleeman, who spoke about the Rani as being the most revered of all sovereigns who ruled over GarhKatanga.
  • A memorial of Rani Durgavati has been built in Jabalpur at the same place where the Rani had attained martyrdom. A ceremony is held here on 24 June each year, which is celebrated as ‘Balidan Divas’ or Martyr’s Day, in honour of the Rani. In 1983 the name of Jabalpur University was changed to Rani Durgavati University and a museum has been named after her.
  • In 1988 a postage stamp was issued in her honour. In 2018, the Indian Coast Guard commissioned the 3rd Inshore Patrol Vessel (IPV) called ‘ICGS Rani Durgavati’ at its district headquarters in Vishakapatnam. However, the most enduring memorial of the Rani is the collective memory of the people, where she has found a place of great regard. Her story has become a legend which forms the theme of songs and tales, through which she stays alive in the hearts of the people every day.

Name : Antaji Mankeshwar Gandhe

Born on 1695 at Supa province, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India

Died on 18 Jan, 1761 at Farukh Nagar, Haryana, India

About :

  • Sardar Antaji Mankeshwar Gandhe, the commander of the Delhi-based army of the Maratha Empire, was born in 1695 in the Supa province in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. He was from a common Farmer family. Due to the severe famine, he came to Kanauj in North India, for education and livelihood with his uncle. There he received his Weapon and Shastra education from Pt. Ramchandra Bhatt and Sufi music education from Haiti Baba.
  • In his youth, Shrimant Shahu Maharaj, the crown prince of the Maratha Empire and grandson of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, saw his talent. When Shahuji became the successor of the Maratha Empire after his coronation in 1708, he enrolled Antaji in his personal service. In due course of time, Shrimant Shahu Maharaj again won over the throne of Chhatrapati in battle with Shrimant Tararani and began his rule as Emperor. Antaji Mankeshwar Gandhe was honoured with the post of “Sardar (Knight)” by Shahu Maharaj to expand the empire.
  • Under the guidance and patronage of Shahu maharaj, when the Peshwas expanded the Hindawi empire in India, Antaji Mankeshwar was appointed as Governor in Delhi and as per the famous Ahmadiyya Agreement of 1752, he was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army of Delhi.
  • For over 21 years (from 1740 to 1761), Antaji was Governor of Maratha Empire. After the battle expert Prithiviraj Chauhan, only Sardar Antaji Mankeshwar Gandhe, controlled Hindustan as a Governor for such long period of time. Antaji hoisted the saffron flag in the whole of North India and kept the administration of the emperor and the Marathas undisturbed by foreign invaders.
  • Near Ahmednagar, Antaji established Kamargaon for his administration and built Garhi fort. During his tenure as the commander-in-chief, Antaji won many important battles in India from 1729 to 1757 by performing brilliantly against the foreign invaders. His decisions in battle space and administration are still considered directional and ideal.
  • In 1754, after the martyrdom of his son, he first opposed the practice of Sati Pratha and issued orders against it. He asked his army and family to follow those orders. This is an important contribution of Antaji’s vision and ideas. He was honoured with the Saptahazari Mansab by the emperor. He also established his own coat of arms and seal for the administration.
  • Ahmadshah Abdali was driven twice across the border of Hindustan by Antaji. Antaji was proud of his bravery and he always fought for Hindustan and Maratha Empire. But on January 18, 1761, while coming towards Delhi from the third “Panipat War”, he was killed by the attackers near Farrukhnagar.

  • Indian Army originated from armies of the East India Company and became the British Indian Army. On 15 Jan 1949, General K.M. Cariappa took charge of Indian Army as the Commander in Chief from General Sir Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-In-Chief of India in 1949. This day marks the transfer of power from the British to Independent India. Since then India celebrates Army Day on 15 January every year to honor the valor, courage and sacrifice of the Indian Army and its valiant soldiers.
  • Since 1949, Army Day parade is organized in Delhi at Cariappa parade ground under the aegis of IHQ of Ministry of Defense (Army). In line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to facilitate deeper connection with people all over the country. Army Day Parade-2023 is being organized in Bengaluru under Southern Command. Apart from the parade and equipment display, meritorious performances are awarded by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) as the chief guest of Army Day Parade.
  • Indian Army’s dedication, righteous conduct, professional competence has been lauded by one and all. Die hard spirit of our soldiers make the Indian Army a formidable force in enemy’s heart. Indian Army has fought valiantly in various wars and has also proved its mettle. Indian Army has been largest troop contributor to UN peacekeeping mission since its inception.
  • Indian Army is rapidly moving towards self reliance by developing and producing indigenous defence equipment within the country to achieve self reliance. Technology induction and automation in Indian Army is being adopted as a crucial component for improving defence capability and achieve military supremacy. The role of Indian Army is not limited to protection of the nation but has been instrumental in the field of sports with outstanding performances in National and International games.
  • The nation is at the cusp of transformative changes driven by bold policy initiatives and enabling provisions as enunciated by the Government defining a vision, roadmap and milestones which will guide our national quest for a developed and self-reliant India. It is imperative for the Indian Army to fully align and integrate with the national goals, and concurrently keep evolving in sync with contemporary and emerging security paradigms, to remain formidable, relevant and prepared for any operational contingency.
  • In spirit of pursuing this goal, the Indian Army is observing Year 2023 as “On Path to Transformation”, to set the course for its evolution to a future ready, technology driven, lethal and agile force, which establishes itself as an iron cast pillar of national power. Indian Army’s transformation strategy is based on following five key domains while ensuring Operational Preparedness to meet contemporary & emerging challenges, across the entire spectrum of conflict :-
    • Modernisation and Technology Infusion.
    • Force Restructuring and Optimisation.
    • System, Process and Functions.
    • Jointness and Integration.
    • Human Resource Management.
  • The Indian Army is a perfect example of gender equality as it started inducting women officers in 1992 and thereafter in Feb 2020 “Permanent Commission” (PC) to Women officers belonging to the “Services” and “Combat Support Arms” was granted.
  • During the journey of 75 glorious years of Indian Army Day, Army establishments have created history with pride and are geared up to scale greater heights in the years to come. Hence it is befitting to commemorate this rich history of Indian Army by way of releasing a Commemorative Postage Stamp.
