• Sitaram Maroo was born on October 11, 1925, in Ranchi. His father, Chauthmal Maroo, originally from Renwal, Rajasthan, migrated to Ranchi in 1920 for business purposes. From an early age, Sitaram Maroo became an active volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
• Alongside his business pursuits, Sitaram Maroo developed a deep commitment to social service from an early age. In 1951, he became Secretary of Ranchi’s renowned social organisation, the Marwari Sahayak Samiti. In 1958, along with other visionaries, he helped establish Nagarmal Modi Seva Sadan, a charitable hospital.
• Further, strengthening nationalist ideals, he launched a weekly, “Jai Matribhoomi,” in Patna. In 1986, he became President of Sanskriti Vihar, the oldest cultural institution in South Bihar, now Jharkhand. Under his leadership, the organisation initiated night schools, rural medical camps, and eye-care programs, especially serving leprosy patients and marginalised communities.
• That same year, he laid the foundation for a spiritual centre dedicated to Lord Bhuvan Bhaskar (Surya Narayan) on a hill near NH-33, between Ranchi and Jamshedpur. Today, it stands as a revered religious and tourist destination in Jharkhand. From this centre, Sitaram Maroo launched Shishu Mandirs, promoting value-based education. More than 2,000 students across eight schools are currently being educated from classes 1 to 10.
• In recognition of his humanitarian efforts, he was honoured with the Manav Mitra Samman on January 25, 1997. That same year, the Rajasthan Parishad of Kolkata awarded him the title of “Social Worker of South Bihar” during Pratap Jayanti.
• To promote Indian culture, he initiated a Geeta Press (Gorakhpur) sales centre from his office premises, providing easy access to spiritual literature for the people of the region. He passed away on December 6, 2003.

• Purshottamdas H. Purohit was a karmayogi, an unsung freedom fighter, a visionary entrepreneur, and a devoted philanthropist. He was a man who lived a life devoted to hard work and selfless service to all sections of society.
• He was born on August 2, 1920, into a Rajpurohit (Brahmin) family in Basant, Pali, Rajasthan. He lost his father at the age of three and was raised by his mother. Due to limited resources for farming, he moved to Mumbai at the tender age of ten in search of a livelihood. Through dedication and hard work, he eventually earned recognition as a noted chef.
• His exceptional culinary skills were acknowledged when he was chosen to accompany his employers as head chef on a business tour to Europe in 1939. This tour, originally brief, was extended to four years due to the outbreak of World War II. His travels through countries such as Italy, England, France, Austria and Germany broadened his worldview, though he remained deeply connected to his roots.
• During his time in Europe, he met his hero, Bharat Ratna Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and became affiliated with the Azad Hind movement. His growing involvement led him to become a trusted confidant of Netaji. He played a discreet yet vital role in the movement, seeing it as his duty to the Nation. The story of India’s freedom is built on the silent sacrifices of heroes like him.
• After independence, he started a modest lodging and boarding venture in Mumbai, which he developed into the renowned Adarsh Group of Hotels. This included Adarsh Lodge, Adarsh Hotel, Adarsh Palace, Adarsh Mahal and Adarsh Baug. As a visionary entrepreneur, he created employment opportunities in both Mumbai and Rajasthan, promoting economic growth and improving lives. His commitment to service and excellence earned him loyal clients from diverse communities.
• He channelled his energy and resources towards the upliftment of society, particularly the underprivileged. Whether responding to natural disasters such as floods and droughts or offering support during periods of social unrest, he consistently extended help. He also collaborated actively with Government bodies, including the Municipal Corporation, Police, and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
• Greatly inspired by the ideologies of Bharat Ratna Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bharat Ratna Lal Bahadur Shastri, he celebrated ‘Shastri Jayanti’ each year at Adarsh Hotel. Recognising his commitment to social welfare, the Government of Maharashtra appointed him Justice of the Peace and Special Executive Magistrate.
• Although he could not pursue formal education, he was a strong advocate of educating the younger generation. To advance this cause, he contributed towards building a hostel in Falna, Rajasthan, offering a safe and encouraging environment for students. He also provided financial assistance to many aspiring learners.
• In 1989, he founded the P. H. Purohit (Rawat Singh) Charitable Trust. Today, the trust continues to operate following his values.

• Throughout history, various types of leaders have emerged, yet the mention of Late Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla evokes the image of a profoundly sincere, hardworking, and dedicated figure. Not confined to the Gujjar community, he tirelessly advocated for the welfare of all regional communities. His legacy includes raising political awareness and educating remote populations about their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the nation.
• Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla, a resident of Village Bandichechian, Tehsil Haveli, District Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory, was born on 14 March 1915. He belonged to the Muslim Gujjar community. Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla, a prominent Gujjar leader, Scholar, Writer, Philosopher, and intellectual of Jammu & Kashmir did a lot of social work with dedication, sincerity, and honesty. He rendered services for the upliftment of the downtrodden sections of the society and for the noble cause of the poor strata of the region. He especially raised the issues pertaining to the Gujjar community not only in Jammu & Kashmir but in other parts of the country as well.
• He strengthened communal harmony among different communities. He promoted patriotism, communal harmony and the secular character of the country and played a vital role for the cause of the national integration.
• Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla has written a number of articles and research papers relating to the Gujjar History & Culture and Gojri language and also on difficulties & problems of the Gujjar Bakarwal tribe and they were published in the national and regional print media and in the available electronic media of his time.
• Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla played a vital role in developing the Gujjar Bakarwal community of Jammu & Kashmir educationally, socially, politically & economically. He always highlighted their problems and difficulties before the government. He worked to solve their problems and also worked for the promotion of the Gojri language being spoken by the Gujjar Bakarwal community of Jammu & Kashmir. He pioneered for the demand of granting Schedule Tribe status to Gujjars Bakarwals of Jammu & Kashmir in 1958 and also initiated a movement & worked to grant the Schedule Tribe status to the Gujjar Bakarwal community of Jammu & Kashmir.
• Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla defended India in wars with Pakistan during 1965 & 1971. He helped Indian Army in the hours of crisis and motivated the Muslim Gujjar Bakarwal Community of Jammu & Kashmir to cooperate with Indian Army and educated the Muslim Gujjar Bakarwal Community of Jammu & Kashmir to counter the Pakistani attackers during the war.
• While recognising the services of Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Jain Gujjars of India unanimously honoured him with the title of “WAZIR–ULQAUM” (Leader of the Community) in all India level Gujjar Samelan held at Kotla Mubarakpur, New Delhi on 7^th of January 1973. Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla died on 10 August 1977.

• In India, spirituality and religion are part of people’s everyday life. Since ancient times, the Rishis & Munis of India preferred to attain spiritual pursuits rather than materialistic pursuits of life. Hence, spiritual wisdom gained an upper hand over materialistic prosperity. Since ages, spiritual seekers from India have shown the world, the higher path of living.
• Sri Aurobindo was born in Calcutta on 15^th August 1872. At the age of seven he was sent to England for education. There he studied at St. Paul’s School, London, and at King’s College, Cambridge. After return to India in 1893, he worked for the next thirteen years in the Princely State of Baroda in the service of the Maharaja and as a professor in Baroda College. During this period, he also joined a revolutionary society and took a leading role in secret preparations for an uprising against the British Government in India.
• In 1906, soon after the Partition of Bengal, Sri Aurobindo quit his post in Baroda and went to Calcutta, where he soon became one of the leaders of the Nationalist movement. He was the first political leader in India to openly put forward, in his newspaper Bande Mataram, the idea of complete Independence for the country. Prosecuted twice for sedition and once for conspiracy, he was released each time for lack of evidence.
• Sri Aurobindo had begun the practice of Yoga in 1905 in Baroda. In 1910 he withdrew from politics and went to Pondicherry in order to devote himself entirely to his inner spiritual life and work. During his forty years in Pondicherry he evolved a new method of spiritual practice, which he called the Integral Yoga. According to Sri Aurobindo, spiritual realization not only liberates man’s consciousness but also transforms his nature. In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, the Mother, he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Among his many writings are The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri. Sri Aurobindo left for heavenly abode on 5^th December 1950.
• After the death of Sri Aurobindo, Sri Aurobindo Society was started by the Mother on 19^th September 1960. She was not only the founder and the Executive President but also remains its guiding force. From a very small beginning, over the years, the Society has grown into an international organization working in diverse fields of life, like integral education, Indian culture, emergency response management and sustainable development.
• Sri Aurobindo has been a scholar, a literary critic, a philosopher, a revolutionary, a poet, a yogi and a rishi. He was all these and much more and has touched the souls of millions in India and abroad. Sri Aurobindo has been an inspiration to all those who wants to make this world a better place by making improvements in their inner world.
• India in its 75^th Years of its Independence and as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations is commemorating the life of spiritual masters whose work and values resonates with the soul of India. Government of India has decided to commemorate 150^th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo in befitting manner at national and international level during the period from 15 August 2022 to 15 August 2023.

• Dattopant Thengadi was born on 10^th November, 1920 on the day of Diwali in Arvi Nagar, Wardha district, Maharashtra. His full name was Dattatreya Bapurao Thengadi but he became famous by the name of Dattopant. His father Bapurao Dajiba Thengadi was an eminent advocate. Dattopant Thengadi had his early education in Arvi Nagar.
• In the year 1931-32, while the freedom movement was going on under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Dattopant Thengadi was a student of class VI & VII and at this early age, he had started sharing his organizing skills. He had formed the Vanar Sena, Jhuggi Jhopdi Mandal and the Arvi Vidyarthi Sangh and participated in the movement.
• Dattopant took advanced education in Nagpur and after earning the L.L.B. degree, he decided to be a pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh and remained engaged in social service for his lifetime. After serving as a Pracharak in Kerala from 1942 to 1944 and then in Bengal till 1948, he came back to Nagpur where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1949. He was the Sangathan Mantri of Bharatiya Jana Sangh of Madhya Pradesh in 1951-53 and Dakshinanchal in 1956-57. He served as the Sangathan Mantri of Madhya Pradesh INTUC Labour Union in 1950-51 which enriched his experience of the labour sector.
• Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh was founded by him on 23^rd July, 1955. The aim of its establishment was to set up a labour organization that would work in the interest of the nation, industry and workers on the principle ‘of the workers, by the workers and for the workers’. The organization is considered as the largest labour organization in the country today.
• Dattopant Thengadi was an organizer and philosopher. He was a litterateur and accomplished author who wrote more than one hundred books and prologues of books. His book ‘Sanket Rekha’ and ‘Third Way’ (third option) books were discussed all over the world. He used to deliver meaningful lectures on literature, culture, history, science, politics, contemporary global activities, economic and social subjects. He had a keen grasp of Marathi, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada and English languages.
• He established ‘Bharatiya Kisan Sangh’ on 4^th March, 1979. He also established ‘Swadeshi Jagran Manch’, ‘Samajik Samrasta Manch’ and ‘Sarvapanth Samadar Manch’ on 22^nd November, 1991, 14^th April, 1983 and 14^th April, 1991 respectively. He played a crucial role in the establishment of the Environment Forum and organizations such as All India Advocates Council, Sahkar Bharti, Pragya Bharti and All India Consumer Panchayat.
• He served as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from 1964 to 1976. He breathed his last on 14^th October, 2004 at Pune.

• Manikchandra Vajpayee (Mama ji) led a selfless life and remained engaged in social service till the end of his life.
• He was born on October 7, 1919 in Bateshwar, district Agra (Uttar Pradesh). He completed his education from Morar, Gwalior. He secured first position in the Middle Board Examination in Gwalior State and received a Gold Medal in the Inter Ajmer Board Examination. He was a Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh from 1944 to 1953. He was a pioneer in establishment of a college in Adokhar (Bhind) and convener for Central India of Swadeshi Jagran Manch and organisational secretary for Central India of Jansangh between 1951 and 1954.
• He began his career in journalism as an editor of Weekly ‘Deshmitra’ published from Bhind. He was associated with ‘Dainik Swadesh’, Indore since its establishment in 1966, and was the editor of this newspaper between 1968 and 1985. Later, as an editorial advisor of Bhopal, Jabalpur, Sagar, Raipur and Bilaspur editions of ‘Swadesh’, he guided several journalists.
• During the emergency, he was in jail for 20 months. He was an eloquent writer. His articles and editorials are still relevant. He covered historical events in great detail in books such as ‘Aapatkalin Sangharsh Gatha’, ‘Pratham Agni Pariksha’, ‘Bharatiya Nari Swami Vivekanand Kee Drishti Men’, ‘Kashmir Ka Kadva Sach’, ‘Jyotijala Nij Pran Ki’ and ‘Madhya Bharat Kee Sangh Gatha’.

• Dr. Shivajirao Ganesh Patwardhan, who devoted his entire life for the upliftment of leprosy patients, was born on 28^th December 1892 in a small village Assangi of Jamkhandi District in Karnataka. He lost his parents in his childhood and therefore he left the place with his sister. He completed his pre college education at Pune in 1914. He received Diploma in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery Degree from Kolkata on completion of his education. He spent 18 months working for the Ramkrishna Mission.
• In Pune, he came in contact with leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar & Mahatma Gandhi and got involved in the Freedom Movement. He participated in Salt Agitation and Quit India movement. He was put in Shivani Jail. He came to Amravati (Maharashtra) in 1917 & made it his work place.
• In his opinion treatment of disease was more important than its cure. He accepted the work of relief and rehabilitation of leprosy patients in 1946. He started Vidarbha Maharogi Seva Mandal on 26^th September 1950 and obtained 450 acres of land from donors. It was inaugurated by Shri Vinoba Bhave. It is known as Tapovan today and is situated at Amravati, Maharashtra. The institute is devoted to the treatment of leprosy & rehabilitation of leprosy patients.
• Earlier leprosy was considered as incurable disease and the persons affected by leprosy were forced to live away from the public eye. Dr. Patwardhan was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s approach to this problem and started rehabilitating leprosy patients in Tapovan. In 1947 he explained the nature of work in Tapovan to Gandhiji in Sevagram. Gandhiji suggested him to start rehabilitation work along with treatment of leprosy affected persons & also create self confidence in them.
• In those days Tapovan was the only organization working in the field of leprosy. Due to the work carried out in Tapovan the number of patients increased. At present there is facility to admit 750 patients at a time which involves free treatment as well as post treatment rehabilitation.
• Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation, a pioneering organisation established in 1951 in the field of leprosy in India, instituted the award titled “International Gandhi Award” in 1986. Vidarbha Maharogi Seva Mandal, Tapovan was awarded with the International Gandhi Award for 2009 in recognition of their distinguished services.
• Government of India honored Shri Shivajirao Ganesh Patwardhan by conferring on him Padma Shri Award in 1959. Shri Patwardhan was never interested in publicity. He passed away on 7^th May, 1986. Anti Leprosy Day is celebrated every year on 30^th January. The pioneering work done by Dr. Patwardhan in the field of leprosy treatment will remain a beacon of inspiration for all.

• Dr. Shambhunath Singh enriched the Post CHHAYAVAD Hindi literature through his multidimensional creative vision. His literary works reflect the struggle arising out of the conflicts among the social and cultural ethos, inherent in society. His prolonged fifty years literary career was solely aimed at Integral Humanism.
• Born on 17 June 1916 at Rawatpar Amethian village in Deoria district of eastern Uttar Pradesh as the middle son of Thakur Ram Dev Singh, Late Dr. Shambhunath Singh started his poetic career at the tender age of 13 years in 1930. By the year 1940, his poetic abilities were noticed by all. In the meantime, on arrival of Mahatma Gandhi at Kashi in 1934, on an evening in Prarthana Sabha, he presented him the poem titled “Harijan” which was framed in glass. It got instantly auctioned by Bapu and a sum of Rs. 50 was received in Harijan fund. In 1938, as a student of Allahabad University, during the golden jubilee celebrations, he was invited to participate in a “Kavi Sammelan” where his poem “Krishak Bala” was widely appreciated. His genius and talents drew the attention of Late Smt. Mahadevi Verma and Dr. Ram Kumar Verma. He came in close contacts with them and got their blessings.
• His poetic talents were further refined even after the year 1940. His poetry collections “Roop Rashmi” and “Chhaya lok” were published during the year 1940 to 1945. His famous poetry “Samay Ki Shila Par” was published in 1944. Dr. Shambhunath Singh wrote about grass root realities of Indian society which got published later on, as collection of poems like “Udayachal” and “Manvantar”. Depicting the social and economic conditions of Indian rural life, he published the collection of his poems in “Diva Lok”, “Maadhyam Main” and “Khandit Setu” after the year 1950.
• “Maadhyam Main” and “Khandit Setu” are the collections of neo-Hindi poetry written by him, but due to his deep love and affection for Indian natural and cultural consciousness he did not like the imported modernity of neo Hindi poetry. Therefore, he invented a new cult in Hindi poetic traditions, namely, the “Nav Geet”.
• During the 50 years of his literary career from 1940 to 1990, apart from the publications of his eleven collections of poetry he published many valuable research works and treatises too, such as “Hindi Mahakavya kaa Swaroop Vikas”, “Goswami Tulasi Das Jeevan aur Vyaktitwa”, “Chhayawaad Yug”, “Prayog Vaad aur Nai Kavita”, “Moolya aur Uplabdhi”, “Hindi Kavya kee Samajik Bhoomika”, “Hindi Alochana ke Jyoti Stambha”, “Vaidik Jaati Ka Nivas Sthan”, “Bhartiya Sanskriti ka Swaroop” and “Samkaleen Hindi Kavita ka Pariprekshya va Navgeet” etc. With publications of “Dharatee aur Aakash”, “Akela Shahar”, “Adrishya Champa” and “Deewar kee Wapasee” he successfully introduced the experiment of absurd drama in Hindi writing.
• His invaluable works on review, research, drama, essay and stories have glorified and immensely enriched the contemporary Hindi literature. He continuously kept himself abreast of the changes that were taking place in the circles of Hindi poetry. After the decline of Chhaya Vaad, he associated himself with the developing streams of Hindi poetry like Yatharthvaad, Prayogvaad, Pragativaad, Neo Poetry and Nav Geet.
• The renowned critic Dr. Prabhakar Machave has described him as “Prince of Songs”. Folk culture, society, nature, love and sensitivity are the central themes in the poetry of Dr. Shambhunath Singh and through its pursuance he established himself as the exponent of modernity and elevator of Indian cultural consciousness. Deeply engrossed in his relentless literary pursuits, he breathed his last on 3^rd September 1991 in Varanasi.

• Dashrath Manjhi (1934 – 17 August 2007), also known as “Mountain Man”, was a poor labourer in Gehlaur village, near Gaya in Bihar, India, who carved a path through a 360 ft long, 30 ft wide and 25 ft high hillock using only a hammer and chisel. After 22 years of work, Dashrath shortened travel between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Gaya town from 55km to 15km.
• Dashrath Manjhi was inspired to take up this enormous task when one day while crossing Gehlour hills to bring him lunch, his wife slipped and fell seriously injuring herself. Due to non-availability of urgent medical attention, she eventually died. Manjhi was deeply disturbed by this and that very night he decided to carve a path through the Gehlour hills so that his village could have easier access to medical facilities. He worked tirelessly and completed the work of carving a path through a hillock in 23 years. His monumental efforts resulted in making life easier for the people of his village. Dashrath Manjhi died at the age of 73.

• Phanishwar Nath Renu was one of the most successful and influential writers of modern Hindi literature. Popularly known as Renu, he not only one of the great Hindi writers but also a freedom fighter, memoirist, an active political and social activist. He is best known for promoting the voice of the contemporary rural India through the genre of ‘Aanchalik Upanyas’ (Regional Story), and is placed amongst the pioneering Hindi writers who brought regional voices into the mainstream Hindi literature. Phanishwar Nath ‘Renu’ was born on 4^th March 1921, at small village of Purnea district (Now Araria district) in state of Bihar in a middle class farmer family. He did his Matriculation from, Nepal and gained higher education from Banaras Hindu University. In 1942 he left his studies and took part in the Indian Freedom Struggle. He also spent three-year rigorous imprisonment in Bhagalpur Jail. He participated in the Nepali revolutionary movement against the Nepal Monarchy in 1950 which resulted in the establishment of democracy in Nepal.
• He has also penned a number of short stories, poems, memories and travelogues. His first novel “Maila Anchal” was published in 1954, which is considered a masterpiece of Hindi literature. Renu portrayed the culture, the characters and the narrative of Mithila with amazing sensitivity in Hindi literature for the first time. The novel radically changed the structure and narrative style in Hindi novels. The distinct feature in the novel is that it does not possess a structured plot or story in the conventional sense. For the first time the National Canvas illustrated the regional flavors and nuances, highlighting the richness and the life force, which only diversity can bring in.
• Phanishwar Nath ‘Renu’ was awarded one of India’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Sri in 1910 which he returned later in protest of proclamation of Emergency.
