About :

  • The song Vande Mataram was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in the mid-1870s, a time when India’s freedom struggle was gaining momentum. It is believed that the song was composed during the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Navami on 7th November 1875. It first appeared in Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s literary journal Bangadarshan and was later included in his novel Anandamath (1882).
  • The song was written during a period of growing national consciousness and it invoked the Motherland as a symbol of strength, prosperity, and divinity, giving poetic expression to India’s awakening spirit of unity and self-respect. The song became popular among the masses after Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore gave it voice at the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress. The song became a rallying cry of the Swadeshi Movement following the partition of Bengal in 1905, uniting people across regions and inspiring countless patriots. The song’s emotional and spiritual resonance made it an enduring symbol of India’s nationalist movement. During the freedom struggle, Vande Mataram became a source of collective inspiration, instilling in the people a deep sense of patriotism and cultural pride. It served as a unifying anthem that brought together countless Indians in their quest for independence and national dignity.
  • On 24th January 1950, while announcing the adoption of the Constitution, Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, declared that Vande Mataram, which had played a historic role in the freedom struggle, would be honoured as the National Song. Since then, the song has been a symbol of national pride, unity, and the indomitable spirit of India’s freedom and cultural heritage.
  • As the nation marks the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram in 2025, nationwide celebrations are being organised to commemorate its legacy and reaffirm the timeless ideals of unity, sacrifice, and love for the Motherland.

About :

  • The 1894 revolt of Patharughat is one of the most significant event in the history of Indian nationalism. This revolt resulted from peasants’ protest against the enhancement of land tax.
  • By the end of the 19th century, the British Government succeeded in establishing a plantation economy in Assam to a great extent. A tax policy was framed with a dual strategy to increase the public revenue resources as well as to squeeze the peasantry so much that they would be forced to give up their traditional occupation and join the labour market. Between 1826 and 1893, the land revenue rates were enhanced several times, crippling the peasant economy. Thus, socio-economic changes brought about during the colonial rule led to the complete breakdown of the backbone of peasant economy.
  • The peasants began expressing their anger. During 1893-94, thousands participated in demonstrations and rallies for several days, particularly in Kamrup and Darrang Districts. At the same time, the peasants of Patharughat and neighbouring areas under Sipajhar tahsil of Darrang district united under the banner of Raijmel (Peoples’ assembly) to challenge the enhancement of tax.
  • The news about holding of regular mels at Patharughat invited the attention of JD Anderson, the Deputy Commissioner of Darrang District. To prevent such a meeting, Anderson took District Superintendent of Police JR Berington and his force to Patharughat on 27 January 1894.
  • The next morning, Anderson sent Berington and his men with the tahsildar for attaching the property of a ryot who had been served a notice to pay tax. Berington returned in an hour and reported that he was accosted by some aggrieved peasants while doing his job, and that he fired his revolver into the ground to keep them from coming close.
  • Shortly afterwards, a large number of ryots approached the rest-house where Anderson was camping. As they were unarmed, he met them in an open space within the rest-house complex and read out the orders of the government. He also told them holding mels was illegal and punishable. But the ryots refused to move unless their demands were met. Thereupon, Berington had pushed them to an open field nearby where a huge crowd was waiting. The crowd started hurling sticks, bamboos and clods of earth at the sepoys. Under orders of the DC, Berington and his men fired continuously on the assembled ryots.
  • The official reports said 15 persons died and 37 were wounded, but the actual figures were much higher. As narrated in the Dolipuran, a ballad composed on the basis of folk memory to commemorate the Patharughat uprising, “Sat kuri raij mori thakil dat chelei pori” (140 peasants died in the revolt).
  • The peasants of Patharughat were the makers of their own rebellion. They proved that they were conscious of the reality and capable of challenging the government. The age long village harmony of Assam facilitated the rise of a class of peasants that emerged as a potential threat to colonial government. Hence the collective action of the peasants of Assam was as significant as other peasant struggles of colonial India.

Name : Birsa Munda

Born on 15 Nov, 1875 at Ulihatu, Khunti district, Jharkhand, India

Died on 9 Jun, 1900 at Ranchi, Jharkhand, India

About :

  • Birsa Munda, born on November 15, 1875, in Ulihatu, Bihar (now in Jharkhand), was a prominent tribal leader and a key figure in India’s struggle against British colonial rule. Revered as a folk hero, Birsa Munda’s life and legacy represent the fight for the rights of indigenous people, and his contributions have made him an iconic figure in Indian history. Birsa Munda belonged to the Munda tribe, one of the indigenous communities in the Chotanagpur Plateau region. Growing up in a family of traditional agriculturalists, he was steeped in the customs and traditions of his tribe, which instilled in him a deep sense of identity and belonging.
  • In his formative years, Birsa experienced the oppressive policies of British colonialism and the exploitation of tribal lands by moneylenders and landlords. The loss of tribal rights and land, along with the forced conversion of tribal people to Christianity by missionaries, fueled his awareness of the injustices faced by his community. Birsa’s spiritual journey began at a young age, marked by an increasing interest in religion and spirituality. He became a follower of the Birsait sect, which emphasized the worship of a single God and sought to reclaim the tribal way of life from external influences. His charismatic personality and oratory skills helped him attract a following among the tribal communities.
  • In 1894, Birsa proclaimed himself a prophet and claimed to have a divine mission to liberate his people. He encouraged his followers to abandon the practices imposed by outsiders and return to their traditional beliefs. This spiritual awakening was a critical aspect of his leadership, as it not only unified the tribes but also instilled a sense of hope and resistance against colonial rule.
  • Birsa’s most significant contribution was his leadership of the Ulgulan, or the “Great Rebellion” from 1899 to 1900. This movement aimed to establish Munda Raj and expel British officials and zamindars (landlords) from the region. Birsa’s call to arms resonated deeply with the tribal people, who had long suffered under oppressive systems. The Ulgulan was not merely a rebellion; it was a socio-political movement that sought to restore the rights of the Munda tribe over their ancestral lands. Birsa and his followers organized protests, raised awareness about their rights, and mobilized the community to resist exploitation. The movement gained momentum, with thousands joining in the struggle.
  • Birsa’s message emphasized self-governance, land rights, and the revival of tribal identity. He sought to reclaim the land that had been taken from the tribals and to establish a government run by and for the tribal people. His vision was clear: a society based on equality and justice. The growing influence of Birsa Munda and the Ulgulan movement alarmed the British authorities, who responded with a violent crackdown. Despite brutal repression, Birsa continued to inspire his followers with his unwavering resolve. He was eventually captured in February 1900 and imprisoned, tragically dying in custody on June 9, 1900, at the young age of 25. His untimely death did not mark the end of his legacy; rather, it cemented his status as a martyr and symbol of resistance.
  • Birsa Munda’s life and struggle left an indelible mark on the tribal communities of India. His efforts to empower indigenous people and assert their rights have made him a revered figure not only in Jharkhand but across India. His teachings continue to resonate, emphasizing self-determination and justice. Birsa Munda’s legacy is celebrated through various cultural and educational initiatives. His birth anniversary is observed as “Birsa Munda Jayanti” a public holiday in Jharkhand and other states, honouring his contributions to the tribal movement. Statues and memorials dedicated to him serve as reminders of his struggle and ideals.
  • In contemporary India, Birsa Munda’s legacy has gained renewed significance as the rights of tribal populations are increasingly recognized. His vision of a just society continues to inspire movements advocating for the rights of indigenous people and environmental conservation. Many activists and organizations draw upon his teachings to address modern issues of land rights, social justice, and cultural preservation. Birsa Munda remains an enduring symbol of resistance against oppression and exploitation. His life, though short, was marked by a profound commitment to the rights of his people and a vision for a just society. As a tribal leader, he not only challenged colonial rule but also revitalized tribal identity and culture, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
  • In a world grappling with issues of inequality and injustice, Birsa Munda’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for one’s rights and the enduring spirit of resilience in the face of adversity. His contributions to the freedom struggle and the empowerment of indigenous communities are celebrated, ensuring that his legacy as a hero of the tribal people will endure for generations to come.

About :

  • The Language Movement is a glorious chapter in the history of Bangalee (Bengali) nation. East Pakistan Muslim Student League formed under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on January 4, 1948. The role of this organization is Specially Memorable in the history of the Language Movement. Among the demands of the Students League, the demand for state language was one of the important points. When Dhirendra Nath Datta’s Proposal in the Pakistan constituent Assembly Session on 23 February, 1948 for recognition of Bengali (Bangla) language as a language of Assembly with Urdu and English was repudiated, the agitated student community brought up strike on February 26, 1948 in Dhaka under the order of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other student leaders. The students of Dhaka University and other educational institutions actively participated in the general strike of March 11, 1948 realizing the right of state language Bengali (Bangla) called under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with other leaders: Shamsul Haque, Oli Ahad, Mohammad Toaha, Abul Kashem, Romesh Das Gupta and Ajit Guha and others.
  • In fact the demand for establishing Bengali (Bangla) language as one of the state languages of Pakistan got momentum on March 21, 1948 when Mr. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan made inane declaration at the public meeting held at the then Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Uddan) that Urdu and Urdu alone would be the state language of Pakistan. This declaration of Mr. Jinnah did not go unchallenged and an instant response of “no” came from few students of Dhaka University.
  • The Urdu-Bengali (Bangla) controversy was reignited when Jinnah’s successor governor-general Khawaja Nazimuddin staunchly defended the “Urdu-only” policy in a speech on 27 January, 1952. On 31 January, 1952 the Shorbodolio Kendrio Rashtro Bhasha Kormi Porishod (All Party Central Language Action Committee) was formed in a meeting at Dhaka chaired by Maulana Bhashani. The Action Committee called for an all out protest on 21 February, including strikes and rallies.
  • In an attempt to prevent the demonstration, the government imposed section 144 in Dhaka by banning any gathering there. The students of Dhaka University and other political activists defied the law and organized a protest movement on 21 February, 1952. The movement reached its climax when police killed student demonstrators on that day. Abdus Salam, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Sofiur Rahman, Abul Barkat and Abdul Jabbar were killed in this incident. The killing provoked widespread civil unrest. After years of conflict, the Central Government relented and granted official status to the Bengali (Bangla) Language in 1956.
  • Shaheed Minar is the name of the eternal monument built in memory of the Language Martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Language Movement on 21 February 1952. Shaheed Minar stands as a universal symbol of linguistic struggle of the Bengali (Bangalee) people of Bangladesh. In 1999, UNESCO declared “21st February” as International Mother Language Day, in tribute to the Language Martyrs, Language Movement and Ethno-Linguistic right of people around the world. In its resolution the UNESCO said – “21st February” be proclaimed International Mother Language Day throughout the world to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives on this very day in 1952. Since then 21 February is observed as International Mother Language Day around the world.

About :

  • The Undisputed Leader of the Bengali (Bangalee) Nation, the Greatest Bengali (Bangalee) of all time, the Great Dreamer of the Golden Bengal (Bangla), The Great Architect of Independent and Sovereign Bangladesh, Bangabandhu always dreamed an independent and sovereign state for the Bengali (Bangalee) people of the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). During General Ayub’s autocratic regime (1958-1969), the Awami League under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emerged as the leading party in the struggle for achieving autonomy for East Pakistan. After the death Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the sole leader of the Awami League.
  • In the aftermath of the 17-days war of 1965 between India and Pakistan that exposed the utter helplessness of the Bengalis (Bangalees) in the absence of any noticeable military defense and security from the side of the Pakistan central Government. At a conference of oppositions parties in Lahore in February 1966, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the historic sixpoint program of the Awami League. The program included: Federal Parliamentary System at the center including universal adult franchise; all power in the federating units or provinces except foreign relations and defense; separate currencies for East and West Pakistan; right of the federating units to levy taxes and duties; right to negotiate trade and commerce with foreign countries by the federating units; and finally, militia or paramilitary forces for the provinces for their own defenses.
  • The six-point program marked a change in politics. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had been able to get his Six-Point Program ratified through the Awami League council meeting held in Eden Hotel, Dhaka on 18-19 March 1966. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected as president of the Party, while Tajuddin Ahmad was elected as General Secretary. The six-point program instantly stirred the younger section of the population of the country. The reaction of the Ayub Government was very sharp. Terming it ‘secessionist’ president Ayub threatened to suppress the demand with the ‘language of weapon’.
  • After the declaration of the Six-Point demand the speed of the freedom movement of the Bengalis (Bangalees) intensified and spread all over the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the Historic Six-Point Movement in 1966 to liberate the Bengali (Bangalee) Nation from Pakistani rule, exploitation and deprivation. The Six-Point demand was the charter of emancipation and independence of the Bengalis (Bangalees).
  • The Historic Six-Point Movement of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman left behind an eternal legacy of perpetual inspiration of emancipation and independence which still inspires the Bengali (Bangalee) Nation. The legacy of the Historic Six-Point Movement of Bangabandhu will live on forever.

About :

  • The Mass Uprising Day is observed in Bangladesh on 24 January to mark the climax of the movement of the Bengali (Bangalee) people of the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) for autonomy in 1969 that eventually led to the Great liberation war of Bangladesh and emergence of independent Bangladesh in 1971. The uprising consisted of a series of mass demonstration and huge conflicts between Government forces and the demonstrators. In this conflict Government forces fired against the demonstrations and killed few.
  • The 1969 mass upsurge is a very important part in the national history of Bangladesh. We achieved our long-awaited independence through the great Bangladesh Liberation War following the Language Movement, the charter of emancipation and independence of the Bengalis (Bangalees) six-point demand and the 1969 Mass Upsurge under the indomitable, undaunted, vigorous and brave leadership of Bangabandhu.
  • The 1969 Mass Upsurge left behind an eternal legacy of perpetual inspiration to protest against exploitation and oppression. The legacy of the 1969 mass upsurge will live on forever.

  • Ahimsa Parmo Dharma is the philosophy of life that was followed by the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The preaching of Gandhiji and his principles of life are a way of living for many people. Non-Violence is the philosophy of life advocated by Gandhiji during the struggle for freedom wherein he revolted against the British through Satyagraha. After the British took over the rule in India, their cruelty towards Indian natives knew no bounds. They took over our land and other resources. Many other freedom fighters had a revolutionary ideology of protesting against the British rule. Gandhiji was not in favour of violence and believed that Ahimsa or peaceful non-violence is the best way to register protest against violence and injustice.
  • Ahimsa essentially means not to hurt anyone physically. Himsa advocates reaching one’s goals even if it is through the means of violence. In today’s day and age of cut-throat competition, many youngsters forget that it is important not to hurt anyone along the way. Even when we speak about terrorism and anti-national activities, himsa is the root cause. Its results are never good. War has only destroyed humanity and the beauty of life. It gives no value to peaceful co-existence but paves the way for hatred and blood-shed.
  • The Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi sincerely believed that non-violence or ahimsa is the strongest force of mankind and that it could even turn a demon into a saint, after all this body of ours is the temple of living gods. His methods of protesting against the British advocated non-violence. He emphasised on Satyagraha as the method of protest for seeking the truth and fought for the cause of the peasants of Champaran, who were exploited by their landlords. Dandi March which was a rebellion against taxes imposed on the basic necessity, salt, was again a peaceful method of protest promoted by Gandhiji who wanted the tax imposed on salt to be removed. To this end, he and 78 Indians took off to Dandi in March 1930 on foot, to extract salt from the sea, which was illegal at that time.
  • Gandhiji also revolted through Non-cooperation Movement in which the Indian workers refused to work but did not resort to any violent means of protest. Further, Indian citizens refused to work in British institutions. Lawyers, clerks, doctors, factory workers, merchants, etc. refused to work and students revolted against studying in British colleges and schools. This movement was later promoted by burning foreign cloth and other foreign goods and taking over wearing Khadi, an Indian-spun, handwoven cloth. Even though this movement lasted only a short while, it shook the British. In fact, it placed them in a damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don’t-dilemma. Such was the power of non-violent Satyagraha.
  • Gandhiji, even now, inspires many people to follow his path of Non-Violence. In fact, he has inspired several civil rights and independence movements across the world. He is truly known as the apostle of peace and non-violence.

About :

  • Port Blair in modern times, as the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is a picturesque tourist location and serves as the gateway to pristine beaches and exotic marine life. To those interested in history, the place is a constant reminder of “Kala Paani” housing the Cellular Jail as well as the stories of torture and inhuman acts meted out to the prisoners, most of them being Indian revolutionaries of the freedom struggle. The first batch of freedom fighters of First War of Independence was brought here on 10 March, 1858, thus marking the beginning of the penal settlement. Since then, the convicts brought here, mostly political prisoners, suffered life imprisonment and hard labour under cruel and degrading conditions. Many were hanged, while others died of disease and starvation.
  • The Cellular Jail, now a National Memorial is a witness to the glorious contribution of revolutionary patriots in the history of the Indian Freedom Movement. Many charismatic personalities were imprisoned here. Veer Savarkar, Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, Barindra Kumar Ghosh, Ullaskar Dutt, Indu Bhushan Roy, Prithvi Singh Azad, Trailokyanath Chakravarthy, Mahavir Singh among others; the catalogue is long and distinguished. The stories of their suffering and sacrifice for India’s independence and their defiance and valour in the face of imperial oppression, have elevated the Cellular Jail to a place of pilgrimage in India’s collective national memory.
  • The more significant fact however, is that Port Blair was the first Indian territory liberated from imperial British rule. In 1943-44 during World War II, this territory served as the headquarters of the Azad Hind government under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The island at the time was liberated from British rule by Japan which captured it during the World War-II.
  • Netaji, accompanied by members of the Azad Hind Government and his staff had paid an official visit to the Andaman Islands from 29-31 December, 1943. He stayed at the former British Chief commissioner’s official residence on Ross Island. His visit followed the Japanese Prime Minister’s historic declaration at the Assembly of Greater East Asiatic Nations in Tokyo on 6 November, 1943 that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands would be transferred to the Provincial Government of Azad Hind.
  • On 30 December, 1943 Netaji addressed a mass rally of Indians at the Gymkhana ground in front of the Andaman Club. On the same day, he hoisted the Tricolour for the first time at the Gymkhana Ground in Port Blair. He also announced the Islands as the first Indian Territory freed from the British rule.
  • After the flag hoisting, Netaji visited the Cellular Jail the same afternoon. He spent two hours there going around the Indian Bastille. Describing his visit to the islands later, Netaji said, “For Indians the return of the Andaman represents the first territory to be liberated from British yoke. By the acquisition of this territory, the provincial government has now become a national entity in fact as well as in name. The liberation of the Andamans has symbolic significance because the Andaman has always been used by the British as a prison for political prisoners. Most of the political prisoners sentenced to servitude for conspiracies to overthrow the British Government – and there have been hundreds of them – were looked up in this island. Like the Bastille in Paris, which was liberated first in the French Revolution, setting free political prisoners, the Andaman where our patriots suffered is the first to be liberated in India’s fight for independence.Netaji named Andaman Island as “Shaheed” and Nicobar Island as “Swaraj”.
  • Today, the place where Netaji hoisted the flag stands as a great memorial.
