About :

  • Bhagavatula Sadasiva Sankara Sastri, better known by his pen name Arudra, made significant contributions to poetry, literary scholarship, cinema, dance research, and cultural preservation. He was a rare blend of creative brilliance and academic rigour.
  • Born on 31 August, 1925 in Visakhapatnam, Arudra hailed from a distinguished family whose history stretches back four centuries. His early years were shaped by traditional learning, but he broke away from convention early, rejecting caste-based practices and embracing a humanist worldview. His first poetic awakening came during the Japanese bombing of Visakhapatnam in World War II, which inspired Loha Vihangalu (Metal Birds). This powerful anti-war poem marked his literary debut.
  • Arudra’s formative years were eclectic. He served in the Royal Indian Air Force, worked as a photographer, and eventually immersed himself in journalism and the Telugu film industry. His early literary mentors under whose influence Arudra honed his craft, blending modernist aesthetics with social commitment. Throughout his life, Arudra was a relentless learner, whether mastering chess, explore the depths of Telugu literary history and revived near-forgotten classical dance forms like Vilasini Natyam.
  • Arudra’s magnum opus, Samagra Andhra Sahityam, remains the most comprehensive documentation of Telugu literary history to date. Originally spanning thirteen volumes, later condensed into four, it traces the evolution of Telugu literature from its origins to the modern era, making it a foundational reference for scholars and enthusiasts alike. His ability to weave historical rigour with engaging narrative ensured that this work became accessible beyond academia.
  • As a poet and lyricist, Arudra brought literary finesse to popular culture. He penned over 3,000 film songs, many of which became cultural staples, effortlessly blending poetic sophistication with mass appeal. His film lyrics, from devotional hymns to romantic duets, demonstrated his versatility and deep understanding of both classical and contemporary idioms. His landmark works include Tvamevaham, a searing poetic refection on war and human suffering, and countless film songs that continue to resonate across generations.
  • Arudra was also a passionate researcher and revivalist of traditional arts. His scholarship on Vilasini Natyam, a classical dance form, played a pivotal role in its preservation and revival. His interdisciplinary approach-bridging literature, cinema, dance, and even magic, epitomised his belief that true art transcends rigid boundaries.
  • Arudra considered himself a Sangha Jeevi, a people’s writer who believed that while epics live on paper, lyrics live in the hearts and voices of the people. This philosophy remains profoundly relevant today as India seeks to balance cultural preservation with modernisation. His works continue to be taught, performed, and discussed, bridging generations and inspiring new waves of Telugu writers, scholars, and artists.
  • The centenary of Arudra’s birth has reignited interest in his legacy and reaffirmed his pivotal role in Telugu and Indian cultural history. His vision of making literature accessible without diluting its essence continues to guide contemporary discourse on cultural inclusivity.
  • Arudra’s towering contributions to Telugu literature, cinema, and cultural research make him a national figure of enduring significance. His centenary offers a timely and symbolic occasion to honour his legacy, ensuring that new generations across India recognise and celebrate his multifaceted genius.

A firm believer in peaceful coexistence, he worked tirelessly to strengthen India’s relations with its neighbors and the international community. About :

  • The culture of Odisha is characterized by its rich heritage of classical arts, temple architecture, traditional music and devotion. Its tapestry of history is woven by a number of unsung cultural heroes resulting in diverse and vibrant artistic tradition.
  • Gangadhar Meher was born on 9th August, 1862 on Sravana Purnima at Barapalli, of present-day Bargarh District of Odisha. He was born in a weaver family and educated upto 5th class. His father Chaitanya Meher was working as a village Vaidya (Ayurvedic doctor) besides his family profession of weaving. At the age of 10, he got married to Shanta Devi.
  • In spite of his little education, he had read a good number of books like Raguvamsham in Sanskrit, Tulasi Ramayana in Awadhi, etc. and mastered them. He was also able to read Bengali magazines and newspapers. Due to the pecuniary condition of his family, Gangadhar Meher used to go to school in the morning and helped his father in weaving in the afternoon. His clear and beautiful handwriting also garnered attention from many people willing to get their writings transcribed by him.

  • Gangadhar started composing poems from a very tender age. His first writings follow the style and technique of the ancient Odia writers. His first poetic work was ‘Rasa Ratnakara’. Then, being persuaded by some friends he changed his ways and wrote poems in the modern Odia style. The works produced by Gangadhar Meher are marked by vivid imagination, in beauty and clarity of language, in the novelty of style, in point of forceful character painting and in the lively description of nature from different perspective. His writings remain as some of the greatest creations in the Odia literature.
  • The popularity of his literary creations is due to his narration of the beauty of the nature. He was also the messenger of Upendra Bhanja’s style and ideals. Just like Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja, his poems are replete with high ornamental words, unique composition style, using in befitting cases, similes, metaphors and appropriate words. His poems are sonorous in the rhythm of words and languages.

About :

  • The culture of Odisha is characterized by its rich heritage of classical arts, temple architecture, traditional music and devotion. Its tapestry of history is woven by a number of unsung cultural heroes resulting in diverse and vibrant artistic tradition.
  • Santha Kabi Bhima Bhoi is a unique genius and spiritual poet born in the 19th Century (1850). The legend about him is so complex and mysterious that it is still not possible to say anything about him with certainty. As a result, the poet’s date of birth, date of death, birth place, field of worship and life – everything is shrouded in mystery.
  • Bhima Bhoi was employed as a cowherd in the house of Chaitanya Pradhan of Kakanpada. One day, while herding the cows, he fell into an abandoned well near Kandhara village. He refused to take help of anybody other than the one who had thrown him into the well. Eventually, Mahima Gosain appeared at the site and served a condition that he would pick him up if he agreed to propagate his thoughts. He also blessed him with the power to write poetry.
  • Bhima Bhoi was a great tribal saint poet, philosopher, social reformer and a revolutionary par excellence, the founder of modern cult named Satya Mahima Dharma. Towards the end of 19th century, Saint Bhima Bhoi saved the downtrodden people from accepting Christianity. He gave a new dimension to the Hindu religion by creating the Satya Mahima Cult with substantive principles of Sanatan Dharma. It was based on the principles of non-attachment and renunciation. Under his able leadership, the cult spread like wildfire in the whole of Odisha and nearby states like Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and other parts of India.
  • He is a literary genius who has to his credit thousands of verses both in Odia (Kosali) and Bengali. Some of those are published in book form and some are still unpublished. His important works include Brahma Nirupana Gita, Stuti Chintamani, Astaka Bihari Gita, Chautisa Madhu Chakra and Bhajanamala. “Granthavali” published in his name, which is rated as a marvellous work of literary excellence of international repute.
  • His famous verse “Praninka arata, dukha apramita dekhu dekhu keba sahu, mo jibana pachhe narke padithau, jagata udhhara heu” has found a place on the walls of the United Nations and the Indian Parliament.
  • Bhima Bhoi and Maa Annapurna are worshipped by their devotees as God and Goddess whose Paduka Temple is enshrined in the premises of Khaliapali Samadhi Pitha. He was a young yogi and his yoga was effective par excellence. Bhima Bhoi breathed his last in Khaliapali on Shiva Chaturdasi in 1895, where his Samadhi temple is located.

Born on 1498 at Kudaki, Rajasthan, India

Died on 1546 at Dwarka, Gujarat, India

About :

  • Meera Bai, born in 1498, Kudaki, India, was a hindu mystic and poet whose lyrical songs of devotion to the god Krishna are popular in northern India.
  • Meera Bai was a Rajput princess, the only child of Ratan Singh, younger brother of the ruler of Merta. Her royal education included music and religion as well as instruction in politics and government. An image of Krishna given to her during childhood by a holy man began a lifetime of devotion to Krishna, whom she worshipped as her Divine Lover.
  • Meera Bai was married in 1516 to Bhoj Raj, crown prince of Mewar. Her husband died in 1521, probably of battle wounds, and thereafter she was the victim of much persecution and intrigue at the hands of her brother-in-law when he ascended the throne, and by his successor, Vikram Singh. Meera Bai was something of a rebel, and her religious pursuits did not fit the established pattern for a Rajput princess and widow. She spent most of her days in her private temple dedicated to Krishna, receiving sadhus (holy men) and pilgrims from throughout India and composing songs of devotion. At least two attempts made on her life are alluded to in her poems. Once a poisonous snake was sent to her in a basket of flowers, but when she opened it, she found an image of Krishna. On another occasion she was given a cup of poison but drank it without any harm.
  • Finally, Meera Bai left Mewar and returned to Merta, but finding that her unconventional behaviour was not acceptable there either, she set out on a series of pilgrimages, eventually settling in Dwarka. In 1546 Udai Singh, who had succeeded Vikram Singh as rana, sent a delegation of Brahmans to bring her back to Mewar. Reluctant, she asked permission to spend the night at the temple of Ranchorji (Krishna) and the next morning was found to have disappeared. According to popular belief, she miraculously merged with the image of Ranchorji, but whether she actually died that night or slipped away to spend the rest of her years wandering in disguise is not known.
  • Meera Bai belonged to a strong tradition of bhakti (devotional) poets in medieval India who expressed their love of God through the analogy of human relations — a mother’s love for her child, a friend for a friend, or a woman for her beloved. The immense popularity and charm of her lyrics lies in their use of everyday images and in the sweetness of emotions easily understood by the people of India.
  • Meera’s mystic songs act as a soothing balm to the wounded hearts and tired nerves of those who toil in this world with the heavy burden of life. The sweet music of her songs exerts a benign influence on the hearers, removes discord and disharmony, and lulls them to sleep. Meera’s language of love is so powerful that even a downright atheist will be moved by her devotional songs. Meera’s songs infuse faith, courage, devotion and love of God in the minds of the readers. They inspire the aspirants to take to the path of devotion and they produce in them a marvellous thrill and a melting of the heart.

About :

  • Vedanta Desikan was a renowned poet, philosopher and a logician. He taught that everyone can easily attain salvation by following the practical path of prappatti, the way of loving surrender and service. His in-depth understanding of even the rival schools of philosophical thought made him a unique polymath.
  • Vedanta Desikan contributed to Tamil and Sanskrit literature. His works are Stotras (Devotional Poems), Vedanta Granthas, Vyaakhyaana Granthas (Commentaries), Rahasya Granthas (Esoteric Works), Kavya Granthas, drama that revealed his ingenuity, creativity, logic, linguistic expertise, devotional fervour and erudite scholarship. In all, one hundred and seventy works have been attributed to Vedanta Desikan. He has been honoured with several titles like ‘Sarvatantraswatantra (Master of Everything)’, ‘Kavitharkika Simha (Lion among poets and logicians)’ and ‘Vedanthacharya (The Master of Vedanta)’. The term ‘Desika’ denotes Vedanta Desikan alone.
  • Vedanta Desikan was born in 1268 A.D. in Thoopul, Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu). His parents were Anantasuri and Todaramba. Anantasuri was one of the seventy-four simhasanadhipatis appointed by Sri Ramanuja to spread the message of his philosophy. Anantasuri and Todaramba were childless even after many years of marriage. They went to Tirumala during Brahmotsava and prayed to Lord Venkateswara for progeny. One night, Todaramba had a divine dream in which she swallowed the bell used in the worship of the Lord. She narrated this incident to her husband the next morning. At the same time, the bell in the sanctum sanctorum was found missing. The priests and scholars deduced that the divine bell was going to incarnate from the womb of Todaramba.
  • The next year, on the day of the Teerthavaari of Lord Venkateswara – Purattasi Sravanam, Todaramba gave birth to a male child. The child was named as Venkatanatha and later revered as Vedanta Desikan. Vedanta Desikan is considered an avatar (incarnation) of the divine Bell of Lord Sri Venkateswara of Tirumala Tirupati.
  • Vedanta Desikan grew up as a prodigy. When he was seven, Kidambi Appullar accepted Venkatanatha as his disciple and taught him arts, science and scriptures. By the age of 20, he became famous for his mastery over poetry, logic, linguistics, science, Vedanta, debate and allied arts. At the age of 21, Desikan got married to Thirumangai also known as Kanakavalli. His uncle also taught him the Garuda mantra which he chanted at Oushadhagiri at Thiruvahindrapuram (near Cuddalore). Garuda gave darshan and taught him the Hayagreeva mantra. He recited that mantra and received the blessings of Lord Hayagreeva.
  • Some scholars had challenged Desikan to compose 1000 hymns in one day. Desikan accepted that and composed 1008 hymns on the Divine Feet (padhukas) of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam within a short span of four hours. This work titled Padukasahasram is full of sonorous and charming poetry in praise of the divine feet of the Lord. He was also master of many other skills including carving sculptures.
  • Vedanta Desikan lived a humble life with his wife. He undertook a vow called uchhavritti – accepting alms for daily sustenance from his disciples without actively seeking them. Desikan stayed in several cities throughout his life such as Thiruvahindrapuram, Kancheepuram, Srirangam, Tirupati and Melkote. He also travelled widely all over India on foot. He lived for 101 years and left for his heavenly abode in 1369 A.D.

He was born on 26th March 1933 in village Matsa of Zamania Tehsil in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. He was the son of Smt. Lakshmi Devi and Shri Baikuntha Rai. Personal essays are a fundamental feature of his writing. All the modes of literary writing such as poetry, story, novel, play, etc. may be discovered in his writings. About his literary compositions, he used to say that they were an expression of his inner voice and promptings which were not forced or laboured. He would say that English was the language for his earning needs, Hindi was his natural language for prayer and devotion.
  • He served as a Lecturer and Head of English Department in Nalbari College, Nalbari & Guwahati University, Assam from 1959-1986. Later, he was the Principal of Swami Sahajanand P.G. College, Ghazipur (UP) during 1986-1995 from where he retired on 30th June 1995.

Born on 17 Jun, 1916 at Rawatpar, Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, India

Died on 3 Sep, 1991 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India

About :

  • Dr. Shambhunath Singh enriched the Post CHHAYAVAD Hindi literature through his multidimensional creative vision. His literary works reflect the struggle arising out of the conflicts among the social and cultural ethos, inherent in society. His prolonged fifty years literary career was solely aimed at Integral Humanism.
  • Born on 17 June 1916 at Rawatpar Amethian village in Deoria district of eastern Uttar Pradesh as the middle son of Thakur Ram Dev Singh, Late Dr. Shambhunath Singh started his poetic career at the tender age of 13 years in 1930. By the year 1940, his poetic abilities were noticed by all. In the meantime, on arrival of Mahatma Gandhi at Kashi in 1934, on an evening in Prarthana Sabha, he presented him the poem titled “Harijan” which was framed in glass. It got instantly auctioned by Bapu and a sum of Rs. 50 was received in Harijan fund. In 1938, as a student of Allahabad University, during the golden jubilee celebrations, he was invited to participate in a “Kavi Sammelan” where his poem “Krishak Bala” was widely appreciated. His genius and talents drew the attention of Late Smt. Mahadevi Verma and Dr. Ram Kumar Verma. He came in close contacts with them and got their blessings.
  • His poetic talents were further refined even after the year 1940. His poetry collections “Roop Rashmi” and “Chhaya lok” were published during the year 1940 to 1945. His famous poetry “Samay Ki Shila Par” was published in 1944. Dr. Shambhunath Singh wrote about grass root realities of Indian society which got published later on, as collection of poems like “Udayachal” and “Manvantar”. Depicting the social and economic conditions of Indian rural life, he published the collection of his poems in “Diva Lok”, “Maadhyam Main” and “Khandit Setu” after the year 1950.
  • Maadhyam Main” and “Khandit Setu” are the collections of neo-Hindi poetry written by him, but due to his deep love and affection for Indian natural and cultural consciousness he did not like the imported modernity of neo Hindi poetry. Therefore, he invented a new cult in Hindi poetic traditions, namely, the “Nav Geet”.
  • During the 50 years of his literary career from 1940 to 1990, apart from the publications of his eleven collections of poetry he published many valuable research works and treatises too, such as “Hindi Mahakavya kaa Swaroop Vikas”, “Goswami Tulasi Das Jeevan aur Vyaktitwa”, “Chhayawaad Yug”, “Prayog Vaad aur Nai Kavita”, “Moolya aur Uplabdhi”, “Hindi Kavya kee Samajik Bhoomika”, “Hindi Alochana ke Jyoti Stambha”, “Vaidik Jaati Ka Nivas Sthan”, “Bhartiya Sanskriti ka Swaroop” and “Samkaleen Hindi Kavita ka Pariprekshya va Navgeet” etc. With publications of “Dharatee aur Aakash”, “Akela Shahar”, “Adrishya Champa” and “Deewar kee Wapasee” he successfully introduced the experiment of absurd drama in Hindi writing.
  • His invaluable works on review, research, drama, essay and stories have glorified and immensely enriched the contemporary Hindi literature. He continuously kept himself abreast of the changes that were taking place in the circles of Hindi poetry. After the decline of Chhaya Vaad, he associated himself with the developing streams of Hindi poetry like Yatharthvaad, Prayogvaad, Pragativaad, Neo Poetry and Nav Geet.
  • The renowned critic Dr. Prabhakar Machave has described him as “Prince of Songs”. Folk culture, society, nature, love and sensitivity are the central themes in the poetry of Dr. Shambhunath Singh and through its pursuance he established himself as the exponent of modernity and elevator of Indian cultural consciousness. Deeply engrossed in his relentless literary pursuits, he breathed his last on 3rd September 1991 in Varanasi.
