• Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. At the age of 14, he began his mission to promote human values of truth, righteous conduct, peace, love, and non-violence, while stressing the unity of all religions. His life of service and compassion inspired the establishment of numerous institutions devoted to education, healthcare, and rural development, benefiting millions, around the world.
• The Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust (SSSCT) continues his vision by offering free healthcare, education, and social welfare services without discrimination. Recognised by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with a Special Consultative Status, the Trust operates two super-speciality hospitals, two general hospitals, and two mobile hospitals that treat around 3,000 outpatients daily, completely free of charge. These hospitals are highlighted by NITI Aayog as exemplary not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare models devoted to “service to society as service to God”.
• In education, the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning provides free undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, combining academic excellence with character building. More than 5,000 students study in all these institutions and receive quality education free of cost. About 102 Sri Sathya Sai Schools, with about 60,000 children under the aegis of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation (SSSSO), are being provided with financial assistance to improve their infrastructure, like buildings, furniture, and computer facilities, to enable quality education to reach the grassroots.

• Purshottamdas H. Purohit was a karmayogi, an unsung freedom fighter, a visionary entrepreneur, and a devoted philanthropist. He was a man who lived a life devoted to hard work and selfless service to all sections of society.
• He was born on August 2, 1920, into a Rajpurohit (Brahmin) family in Basant, Pali, Rajasthan. He lost his father at the age of three and was raised by his mother. Due to limited resources for farming, he moved to Mumbai at the tender age of ten in search of a livelihood. Through dedication and hard work, he eventually earned recognition as a noted chef.
• His exceptional culinary skills were acknowledged when he was chosen to accompany his employers as head chef on a business tour to Europe in 1939. This tour, originally brief, was extended to four years due to the outbreak of World War II. His travels through countries such as Italy, England, France, Austria and Germany broadened his worldview, though he remained deeply connected to his roots.
• During his time in Europe, he met his hero, Bharat Ratna Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and became affiliated with the Azad Hind movement. His growing involvement led him to become a trusted confidant of Netaji. He played a discreet yet vital role in the movement, seeing it as his duty to the Nation. The story of India’s freedom is built on the silent sacrifices of heroes like him.
• After independence, he started a modest lodging and boarding venture in Mumbai, which he developed into the renowned Adarsh Group of Hotels. This included Adarsh Lodge, Adarsh Hotel, Adarsh Palace, Adarsh Mahal and Adarsh Baug. As a visionary entrepreneur, he created employment opportunities in both Mumbai and Rajasthan, promoting economic growth and improving lives. His commitment to service and excellence earned him loyal clients from diverse communities.
• He channelled his energy and resources towards the upliftment of society, particularly the underprivileged. Whether responding to natural disasters such as floods and droughts or offering support during periods of social unrest, he consistently extended help. He also collaborated actively with Government bodies, including the Municipal Corporation, Police, and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
• Greatly inspired by the ideologies of Bharat Ratna Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bharat Ratna Lal Bahadur Shastri, he celebrated ‘Shastri Jayanti’ each year at Adarsh Hotel. Recognising his commitment to social welfare, the Government of Maharashtra appointed him Justice of the Peace and Special Executive Magistrate.
• Although he could not pursue formal education, he was a strong advocate of educating the younger generation. To advance this cause, he contributed towards building a hostel in Falna, Rajasthan, offering a safe and encouraging environment for students. He also provided financial assistance to many aspiring learners.
• In 1989, he founded the P. H. Purohit (Rawat Singh) Charitable Trust. Today, the trust continues to operate following his values.

• Shri Bomi Reddi Nagi Reddi, an eminent publisher, successful film producer, philanthropist and a great lover of humanity, was born on 1^st December, 1912 as the second child of Bommi Reddy Narasimha Reddy and Erukulamma, in the village Pottipadu, in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. Till the age of 12 his schooling was done at Kothapalli village. Later he studied at Muthiaplpet Higher Secondary School, Chennai. He was married to Seshamma on 4^th December, 1933.
• Initially, he took care of his father’s onion export business, but his elder brother B. N. Reddy was instrumental in getting him involved in the film industry. Taking over from him the management of Vauhini Studios in 1948, he developed it as the largest studio in South East Asia, in less than 10 years. The Telugu film ‘Shavukaru’ was the first film produced by him under the banner of Vijaya Productions. The story for this first film of his was provided by Shri Chakrapani, who became his friend philosopher and guide in later years. This exemplary collaboration heralded the golden era in the world of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi cinema.
• Starting his career as a letter press printer in 1944, he chose to join hands with Shri Chakrapani and extended his activity into publishing a socio-political monthly, ‘Andhra Jyothi’ in Telugu in 1945. He later established one of India’s largest offset printing presses, Prasad Process, which was then the only plant in India specialising in printing large size 24 sheet integrated hoarding posters. No wonder that Prasad Process was classified as an ‘A’ class printer in South India, winning the maximum number of awards from the Government of India for excellence in printing.
• Conceptualised by B. Nagi Reddi and his friend Chakrapani, the monthly children’s magazine ‘Chandamama’ was launched in the year 1947, the year our nation won independence, with the idea of making the children of India learn, think and dream together, despite their different mother tongues. Soon it became a household name. Besides English and Sinhalese, Chandamama was published in 14 Indian languages – Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Odia, Assamese, Gujarati, Gurumukhi (Punjabi), Sindhi and Santhali (a tribal language). Chandamama also had a Braille edition in four languages for the visually impaired, distributed free.
• As an emerging entrepreneur he held several high positions viz. President, All India Master Printers’ Federation for three terms, President of South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce for three terms, President of Film Federation of India for two terms, Chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Board etc.
• B. Nagi Reddi’s dynamism could not be contained in all these achievements and the numerous accolades he received. His great aspiration was to provide quality medical service at affordable cost to the society. His vision led to the establishment of Vijaya Hospital in 1972 which was one of the first multispecialty hospitals in Chennai. With initial bed strength of 46, the hospitals have now grown to provide 700 beds under the banner of Vijaya Medical and Educational Trust. Vijaya Group of Hospitals is now one of the largest healthcare providers in South India and one of the most trusted Medical institutions.
• Shri B. Nagi Reddi has won a number of awards including the most prestigious one, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1986. He was also given Raghupathi Venkiah Award by the A.P. Government in the year 1987. He received the ‘Kalaimamani’ award by the Government of Tamilnadu in 1973, ‘Johannes Gutenberg Fellow’ from All India Master Printer’ Federation in 1978 ‘TMA Pai Award’ by Academy of General Education of Manipal. Besides, he received D.Lit (Honoris Causa) from Sri Venkateswara University in 1982 and Sri Krishnadevaraya University, in 1990. On 25^th February, 2004 he left his mortal abode.

• Mr. Vencatexa Sinai Dempo, also known as Vasantrao, was born to Mrs. Satyabhama and Mr. Srinivassa Sinai Dempo on 4^th March, 1916. The family home at Calapur (Santa Cruz) in which the young Vasantrao grew up was steeped in religiosity and orthodox ritual, from which came his staunch piety towards his family deities and reverence for the Pontiff of the Monastic School to whose sect he belonged. Having studied Marathi, Portuguese and English, he grew aware of the great world of business that lay beyond Goa. Generations of land-owning, shipping, trading in agricultural produce and underwriting had led to the Dempos being esteemed highly, for their integrity as much as for their social responsibility. It was Vasantrao‘s genius that he kept alive and strengthened this glorious tradition, while pioneering new lines and new practices of business.
• Commencing the trading in commodities sourced overseas, Vasantrao made available a wealth of choice to the Goan consumer. Casting about for business opportunity, he showed great foresight in recognizing the potential for iron ore mining in Goa. Acquiring mining concessions in the late 1930s and early 1940s, he formed V. S. Dempo & Co. Pvt. Ltd., the Group flagship in 1941, assisted by his brother, Mr. Vaikunthrao S. Dempo. The Company would go on to become a much-lauded export house in addition to the region’s premier mining and processing concern. Acquiring the ore-rich mine at Bicholim, till today Goa‘s largest, he set up Dempo Mining Corporation Pvt. Ltd., the flagship’s subsidiary, a few years later. Recognizing the vulnerability of Europe-oriented exports to the Suez Canal, Vasantrao looked far Eastwards instead, commencing exports to Japan, in particular to Nippon Steel, starting a long business relationship that abides to this day; over half a century later. Vasantrao invested in transhipper vessels on contracts with international corporate giants such as Krupp. He did so, correctly foreseeing the logistical scale of operations involved in the undertaking. Vasantrao‘s iron resolve rode the Company out of the pre-Liberation naval blockade of Goa.
• The years following Goa’s Liberation were those of consolidation and expansion, when his son and eventual successor, Vasudeva V. Dempo, joined in assisting him in a long, devoted and fruitful apprenticeship that saw newer lines of activity at the House of Dempo. Manufacture of calcined petroleum coke, marine paints and baby foods, newspaper publishing, shipping, ship building, civil contracting, real estate development, travel services, automobile dealerships, and stevedoring, followed.
• Vasantrao Dempo set the foundations for higher education in newly-liberated Goa. He patronized Goa‘s most consistently excelling soccer club and supported charitable causes and exerted his influence in promoting Goan industry. Honoring him for his efforts in nation-building, the Government of India conferred upon him the civilian award, “Padmashri”. Some of the awards that deserve special mention are the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Excellence for 1990 for enhancing India‘s prestige and contributing towards national development, given by the London-based Non Resident Indians’ Institute, the Rotary Club of Panjim‘s “Ambassador of Goodwill” honour, and the Shiromani Institute’s award for national integration.
• Vasantrao was highly sought after as advisor by a number of institutions of worth. He sat on several highly regarded Committees and bodies. Chairman of the Indo-Portuguese Trade Council, he was also a member of the Lloyd‘s Register of Shipping for India, the American Bureau of Shipping’s Technical Committee and the Indo-Japan Business Corporation Committee. He also served as the President of the Goan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
• Vasantrao was a man of great charm and enormous dignity. He radiated authority and exuded an unmistakable aura of power. When the end came on 9^th November, 2000 Vasantrao had ensured not only a place for himself in India‘s industrial history, but also in the hearts and minds of Goans.

• Sathya Sai Baba or Sathyanarayana Raju was born on 23^rd November, 1926, in the remote hamlet of Puttaparthi, now a part of Andhra Pradesh.
  
• In school, young Sathya was exceptionally brilliant, automatically raising high expectations of a great career. However, on 20^th October, 1940 he dropped out of school with a goal to serve the poor.
  
• Sathya Sai Baba‘s philosophy can be summarised in one word Prema, which means Divine Love. He believed that every single human being can obtain the Divine Power and capability by shedding swaarthaam or selfishness and swaprayojana or self-interest.
  
• Keeping up to his beliefs, Sathya Sai Baba set up a tertiary-care hospital in Puttaparthi in November, 1991. Over a period of 22 years, the hospital has added several specialities. It treats every single patient absolutely free. Another such hospital was set up in Bangalore in 2001.
  
• Sathya Sai Baba is also known for execution of six drinking water projects during the period 1995 to 2004, which were highly beneficial for the masses. His contribution to the field of education is notable. He set up Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Puttaparthi in 1981 where the teachings are a synthesis of education and the spiritual heritage of this ancient land. The education offered here is completely free and the spirit of service to the society is instilled in the students through various programmes like Grama Seva.
  
• Sathya Sai Baba kept up the good work till his death on 24^th April, 2011.

• T. S. Narayanaswami, TSN or Abboy as he was popularly known, was born on 11^th November, 1911.
• He started his career as a junior officer in the Indo-Commercial Bank in the early 1930’s where he made a mark with his industrious nature and an eye for detail. The experience of working in the banking sector provided him with the confidence to venture into the field of business. He started The India Cements Limited in 1946 in Talayathu, a small hamlet in Tirunelveli District along with S. N. N. Sankaralinga Iyer and K. Lakshmanan. The plant soon became one of the leading cement manufacturers in south India.
• The group further ventured into Aluminium, Shipping, Chemicals and Plastics and established Madras Aluminium Company Limited (MALCO), South India Shipping Corporation (SISCO), Chemicals and Plastics India Ltd. (Chemplast) in quick succession. The imagination and initiative of Narayanaswami was the driving force behind these enterprises.
• Narayanaswami was not only involved in social causes but also was an active sponsor of technical education. His advice and guidance was continuously sought by both public and private sectors. He held responsible positions in a number of official and non-official bodies. He was the Chairman of Madras Industrial Investment Corporation, President of Hindustan Chamber of Commerce and member of Executive Committee of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. His appointment as Sheriff of Madras in 1964 was a tribute to his pre-eminence in social and cultural circles and a recognition of his contribution to the industrial progress of the State.

• Shri Govindasamy Karuppiah Moopanar, better known as G.K. Moopanar, was born on 19 August 1931, at Kapisthalam Village in Thanjavur District at Tamil Nadu to Shri R Govindasamy Moopanar and Smt. Saraswathy Ammal.
  
• While his family circumstances did not allow him to continue studies beyond high school he went on to learn English and Hindi also apart from his mother tongue Tamil.
  
• In 1950, he came into contact with the Congress party stalwart Shri Kamaraj and became his staunch follower. Devoting himself fully to the activities of the Congress party, in the due course he became the President of the District Congress Committee, and was a member of the State Congress Committee, before working his way up to the national scene as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1977 to 1989 and also General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee from 1980 to 1988. In February 1988 he became the President Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, and in 1989 he became the Leader of the Congress Party in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. In 1996 Shri G.K. Moopanar split from the Congress and floated a new political party called, the “Tamil Maanila Congress“.
  
• A great statesman and political leader, Shri G.K. Moopanar served as the President of Thiruvaiyaru Thiyaga Brahma Sabha, and the Co-operative Society of Chandrasekarapuram. He breathed his last on 30^th August 2001.

• Pachaiyappa was born in 1754 in Periapalayam village near Chennai to Shri Visvanatha Mudaliar and Smt Punchi Ammal. His father passed away before his birth. Therefore his mother, after a brief stay at Periapalayam, moved with her children to Chennai in search of livelihood. They settled down at George Town, then called Black Town, where she obtained the help of Shri Narayana Pillai Dubhashi. He evinced interest on the boy Pachaiyappa and put him into the school. The boy picked up sufficient English to become a Dubhashi (Interpreter) which in Hindi meant a bilingual person. Starting often as interpreters, dubhashis were brokers who handled business and commercial matters between their English masters and the Indians at the time.
  
• The situation prevalent in the South India was chaotic. The small princely kingdoms were fighting each other. For the British traders the situation was favourable to firm up their commercial roots in the Indian soil. However, the local language proved to be the main impediment. So they employed local people knowing English for the purpose of carrying on with their trade. Shri Narayana Pillai, Pachaiyappa‘s mentor, was one such person who was a leading Dubhashi of his time.
  
• At a tender age when other boys of his age were attending school, the young Pachaiyappa began his career by becoming a purchasing and selling agent for a wholesale ceramics merchant.
  
• Pachaiyappa‘s business acumen was amazing. He was always honest. This earned him the most coveted honour of being the foremost Dubhashi in the Madras Presidency. From being a Dubhashi to revenue collector, Pachaiyappa tried his hand at various businesses and made a large fortune.
  
• Pachaiyappa was pious and charitable at heart. He gave large donations to temples and built choultries along the old pilgrim route to Rameshwaram. He had special veneration for Lord Nataraja in Chidambaram and gave large quantities of jewellery and huge amounts to this temple. His own house had become a converging point for scholars and pilgrims where he fed thousands daily.
  
• His huge successes and wealth in the business did not make him forget his debt to his mentor Narayana Pillai. He secured a job for Pillai‘s son with one Joseph Sullivan. He made him his agent in Madras and through him all the business payments were made. Further, Narayana Pillai was given the right to manage a part of his large property after his death.
  
• At 40 years he suffered an attack of paralysis. Soon his condition worsened and therefore, he wrote his Will on 22^nd March 1794. In the Will, sufficient funds had been allocated with the direction to perform pujas in selected temples from Kashi to Rameshwaram. He went to Thiruvaiyaru where he passed away on 31 March 1794. Though much was lost due to mismanagement by successive executors of the Will, some amount was redeemed and put to good use in charities and in setting up educational institutions, one of which is Pachaiyappa‘s College.

• Harakh Chand Nahata was born on 18^th July, 1936 at Bikaner (Rajasthan) in an illustrious family. His father Shri Bhairudan Nahata was a businessman and soft natured social worker and his mother Durgadevi was a religious woman.
  
• After completing his schooling at Bikaner and during college years in Calcutta, Nahata started his business career. A visionary entrepreneur, who wanted to tread uncharted path, he was the first person, who started road transportation in the difficult and inhospitable terrain of Tripura, Handling the largest Railway Out Agency in Tripura (Tripura Town Out Agency) and establishing a large network of road transport at his own heavy costs and risks, he was instrumental in starting economic development and two way traffic to bring economic gains for the local tribal people and the state of Tripura.
  
• He contributed a lot for the development of cinema in Eastern India through his Technicians Studio, Calcutta, with which many internationally acclaimed directors like Satyajit Ray, Hritwik Ghatak and Basu Bhattacharya etc. were associated. Later, he turned film financier and Realtor and was known as an honest and upright person in trade circles. For his multi-faceted contributions to the trade and industry, he was honoured with awards by the Vice President of India and Lt. Governor of Delhi.
  
• He was a leading social leader and philanthropist, who steadfastly stood and fought for human dignity, equality and respect. Associated with more than 60 socio-religious organisations and Trusts like Heart Care Foundation of India, Prakrit Bharati Academy, Rishabhdev Foundation, Mimjhar, Veerayatan, Rajasthan Bharati, Ahimsa International, Jain Mahasabha, Bharat Jain Mahamandal, Vishwa Jain Parishad and many others in different capacities, he relentlessly endeavoured to attain their cherished goals. From 1990 onwards, he was the President of ‘Akhil Bharatiya Shree Jain Shwetamber Khartargachha Mahasangh‘ – the apex national representative body of thousands of Jains of this sect. As President, he relentlessly fought to safeguard against many injustices and attacks on the rights, dignity and conventions of the Samaj.
  
• Harakh Chand Nahata encouraged many upcoming artists of films and performing arts with his sanguine advice, help and patronage. He was a great connoisseur of art and literature and helped many budding artists, poets and writers. He spotted talents of writers and published many books including a Hindi monthly magazine at his own cost to encourage them. He was a voracious reader with a sharp analytical mind and compassioned heart. He wrote many write-ups on different subjects and was an orator par excellence, who kept the audience spellbound with his thought-provoking dissertations and mastery over the chosen subject.
  
• Though a Jain by birth, he was an embodiment of ‘Sarv Dharma Sambhav‘. Regardless of caste, creed or religion, he respected each and every faith and contributed to various temples and places of worship without any distinction. He was a firm believer that religion is and should be binding force and not a divisive force.
  
• He considered integrity and security of the Nation above religion and culture and stressing this, he used to say that only if the nation is secure, only then religion and culture would be secure.
  
• Compassion, tolerance, equality, dignity and love should be the guiding and contributing spirit in religious affairs and to this end he steadfastly worked at various levels and at different forums.
  
• Living a full and contented life, he breathed his last on 21^st February, 1999 at New Delhi after a brief illness.

About : 

• Shri T.V. Ramasubbaiyer, popularly known as T.V.R. was a freedom fighter, philanthropist and founder of popular daily newspaper Dinamalar whose impact on Tamil Nadu has been profound. Through his missionary zeal he has been able to bring to the fore the social issues of education, poverty and discrimination and through his principled and sustained effort has been able to bring about remarkable social, educational and policy transmissions. He was a man of indomitable spirit, uncanny sense of purpose and unwavering commitment to a cause.
  
• Born on 2^nd October 1908 at a place called Tazhuvlyamahatevar Kovil, in the erstwhile princely State of Travancore, Ramasubbaiyer even as a young man was a socially enlightened person who worked for the rights and upliftments of socially downtrodden classes and the poor. The present literacy rate of 95% in Kanyakumari is traced to Ramasubbaiyer. A Committee under him managed to construct 50 schools in the area with public and private support at a time when compulsory education was tottering in other areas of Travancore. It was his systematic and sustained campaign that led to the merger of Kanyakumari, a part of erstwhile Travancore State, with Tamil Nadu.
  
• The most significant contribution of T.V. Ramasubbaiyer has been the publication of the famous Tamil Daily Dinamalar which has over the years become the major voice of rural populace in Tamil Nadu. So great was the social commitment of TVR, that following the unconventional wisdom he started Dinamalar which literally means “Daily Flower”. The first edition was printed from Thiruvananthapuram on 6^th September 1951. The found editor TVR was a man of purpose and uncanny sense of direction. Despite warning from no less a person than Rajaji against starting a Daily Newspaper, he followed his instinct and with extreme perseverance, dedication, initial hiccups and financial hardships made it a success. TVR saw to it that his daily hits the stands and reaches the home without fail by 7 a.m. in the morning. His hard work, meticulous planning, native economic wisdom and dedication to the cause saw the rise in popularity of Dinamalar in Tamil Nadu daily life. Today Dinamalar stands as a colossus holding forth the role of an important fourth estate shaping the fortunes of Tamil Nadu.
  
• With creation of Tamil Nadu, he shifted the edition published from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of erstwhile Travancore princely state, to Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu in 1957. Buoyed by the initial success of the paper, he decided to start another edition of the paper from Tiruchirappalli in 1966. Another example of his unconventional wisdom was that most newspapers expanded from larger cities to smaller towns, Dinamalar expanded from small town to big cities. After consolidating the gains, editions from other centres were started like from Chennai in 1970, Madurai 1980, Erode 1984, Pondicherry 1991, Coimbatore 1992, Vellore 1993, Nagercoil 1996, Salem 2000.
  
• It was TVR’s vision to connect India from Kashmir to Kanyakumari by Rail link. His sustained campaign for long number of years through Dinamalar bore fruit finally in 1978 when Kanyakumari was linked by Rail to rest of India. Kanyakumari was brought on the tourist map of India and the economic and social benefits are for all to see.
  
• T.V. Ramasubbaiyer was a visionary, a social reformer, a prolific writer, a campaigner for social causes and a champion of downtrodden. He single-handedly shaped the course of events on large number of issues – be it education or civic facilities or social upliftment of the downtrodden. He was the voice of the voiceless and face of the faceless. He made Dinamalar an instrument for social, political and economic transformation. His contributions will always occupy a place of eminence in Tamil Nadu.
