About :

  • Ancient India is known for the figures and personalities who gave precedence to societal welfare and Dharma over their personal comforts and benefits. Bhagwan Parshuram, a mythological figure from ancient India is believed to be the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In Indian philosophy the concept of Avatar (incarnate) holds a special position. It gives hope, creativity and passion to humanity.
  • Born in a Brahmin family, Parshuram, son of Sage Jamadagni and Renuka was born in Treta Yuga and is known for his methods of warfare and sense of righteousness. He conducted the Ashwamedha sacrifice and gave his entire belongings to the priest who conducted the ritual.
  • Parshuram is a figurine from ancient India whose references come in Puranas and other historical documents. The Mahabharata and Ramayana, both include him in pivotal roles including being guru to Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna. He taught Karana extremely powerful Brahmastra technique. He also cursed him that the knowledge would be useless to Karana, predicting much in advance that Karana would join the unrighteous Duryodhana in the Kurukshetra war. Such was his love for righteousness. It is said that Bhagwan Parshuram was destined to free the earth’s burden by assassinating the sinful and irreligious rulers, who neglected their duties.
  • Bhagwan Parshuram was well versed with the four Vedas and sports the bow and arrow upon his back. It is said that he received the axe after undertaking penance to please Lord Shiva.
  • There are several Parshuram temples throughout the western coast of India as well as North India, but specially more in the coastal areas from Baruch in Gujarat right upto Kerala. In South India at the holy place Pajaka near Udipi, there exist a temple of Parshuram. Parshuram, the creator of the Konkan coast is also worshipped in Maharashtra’s Ratnagir District. The people of Konkan call their land ‘Parshuram Bhoomi’, in accordance with the legend that the sage reclaimed the land from the sea. One can see a Parshuram temple with a Agni Mandir in Shivpuri in Maharashtra and Fort Songadh in Gujarat.
  • Parshuram is known for his divine qualities who established Dharma. He showed reverence for the qualities, potential and truth and not for the titles of birth related privileges. He is the reformist in the true sense of world.
  • Bhagwan Parshuram was highly objective and was tough and fair to punish the Adharmic. He raised his axe against all, who violated the contemporary code of conduct from the societal point of view.
  • Life of Parshuram is an example of courage, unwavering resolve, fairness, empathy with the downtrodden, indifference towards the powerful, objectivity in decision making and absolute stillness irrespective of the situation.
  • Parshuram Jayanti is celebrated every year on Akshaya Tritya in the month of May. The day marks the beginning of the Treta Yuga and his believe that good deeds done on the day are preserved forever. The spiritual seekers celebrate this day by fasting and Satsang.

About :

  • Siachen Glacier – ‘the highest battle field in the world’ is the land of extreme hostile climatic conditions, treacherous terrain with savage mountains. For the troops serving there, ‘courage and fortitude’ is the norm. In the local Balti language ‘Sia’ stands for ‘Wild Rose’ and ‘Chen’ means ‘place’. Wild Roses are found aplenty near the snout of the glacier and in its lower valleys. It is these roses which give the Glacier its name ‘Siachen – the place of Roses’.
  • The Siachen Glacier emanates from Indira Col and runs for approximately 76.4 Km in a South-easterly direction to the source of the Nubra River. It is hemmed-in by the Saltoro Ridgeline to the West and Karakoram to the North and East. There are four important passes on the Saltoro Range namely Sia La, Bilafond La, Chulung La and Gyong La. In the South, this sector overlooks the Shyok River Valley, which lies in an East-west configuration. The area is characterised by high altitude mountainous terrain, which is glaciated and remains snow bound throughout the year. The heights in the area are between 12000 and 21000 feet.
  • Prior to 1984, neither India nor Pakistan had any permanent presence in the area. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Pakistan permitted several foreign mountaineering expeditions to scale peaks on the glacier. This was with a design to reinforce its illegal claim over Siachen. In 1983-84, a force was raised by the Pakistan Army for the occupation and capture of the Saltoro Watershed; this was called the ‘Burzil Force’ and the Operation was code-named “Operation Ababeel”. However, the Indian Army launched “Operation MEGHDOOT” and defeated the nefarious designs of Pakistan Army by securing the Siachen Glacier.
  • Operation MEGHDOOT was launched under HQ 26 Sector on 13 April, 1984. HQ 102 Infantry Brigade was raised on 01 March, 1985 and additional troops were deployed on the Saltoro Ridge under Operation MEGHDOOT. The formation was placed under command of 28 Infantry Division from 14 March, 1985 to 20 June, 1991 and reverted to 3 Infantry Division on 21 June, 1991. On 15 February, 2009, the Brigade was placed directly under HQ 14 Corps.
  • The soldiers who defend the glacier are known as Siachen Warriors. The Siachen Warriors have made innumerable sacrifices displaying selfless devotion to the nation. The Siachen Warriors because of their deeds have been awarded with one Param Vir Chakra, one Ashok Chakra, five Mahavir Chakras, eight Kirti Chakras, thirty five Vir Chakras, thirty Shaurya Chakras, twenty two Yudh Seva Medals, two hundred nineteen Sena Medals and fifty three Mentions in Dispatches.
  • Several attempts have been made by Pakistan to dislodge Indian troops from their positions. Indian troops in a testimony to their resilience, determination and bravery have thwarted these attempts even at the cost of precious and valuable lives. More than 1050 brave Indian soldiers have attained martyrdom due to weather and enemy actions in this cold and isolated battlefield.

About :

  • The “Nature” is a storehouse of joy, peace and pleasure. Nature is like a Philosopher’s stone that has the potential to transform its surroundings with its presence itself. Nature can provide a new lease of life to a fatigued mind or a weary body. The kind of comfort and consolation that can be felt in the lap of nature is described by the poets, bands and wandering minstrels. The flowing rivulets, the sounding cataracts, the whispering winds, the joyful flowers and the lofty mountains are only some of the manifestations of that divine beauty.
  • The Bliss of being touched by any aspect of the vast Nature can be seen in the world’s greatest poetic and philosophical expressions. There can be no better mediation that being in touch with the Nature. It has a healing touch of its own. The lovers of Nature immerse themselves in listening to the melodious songs of larks, watching the clouds moving majestically across the sky, and manage to witness the joyful dance of peacock on a rainy day. They can spend hours looking at the starry heavens and absorb the beauty of a rainbow in the sky. They do not forget to see the sublime in the ephemeral.
  • Where Nature is a source of joy, it is also a great teacher. The fruitful trees teach us to be humble; the mountains teach us to be strong and firm; the flowers teach us to smile and blossom even when we are surrounded by the thorns of life. The wildlife in Nature teach us harmony and balance in life. It reveals the oneness of life.
  • Nature is permeated with the same soul that dwells in men. There is a kinship between man and nature. But our relationship with nature is also of imbalance and overuse. Nearly every step in human history has unfortunately been accompanied with a leap in environmental degradation. Apart from achieving stability for ourselves and our kin, we also have an obligation to maintain the environment, as we depend on the resources and services it provides. Our cognitive ability and understanding of nature obliges us to maintain the integrity of the environment. In order for the Earth to retain its balance, it is important that we do not overstep our bounds as a species. This requires a universal effort to revaluate our relationship with nature and make adjustments as needed. It is important to recognise a rippling of consequences that are being faced because of Man’s intervention with the nature.

About :

  • 3 Garhwal Rifles was raised at Lansdowne by Lieutenant Colonel JMT Hogg on 20 August 1916 and was christened as 3rd Battalion 39th Garhwal Rifles. Soon after raising, the battalion participated in the Third Afghan War in 1919. The services of the battalion were recognised by the grant of the Indian General Service Medal 1908 with Clasp, ‘Afghanistan, NW frontier 1919’. The battalion was rechristened as 3rd Battalion, 18th Royal Garhwal Rifles on 01 October 1921.
  • In 1940, during the Second World War the battalion fought gallantly in the famous battle of Gallabat and earned one of the first victories of the war for the allied forces. For this rare feat, Field Marshal Viscount Slim, who was then the Brigade Commander, while reminiscing, years after the war, said:– “I suppose I have commanded battalions of every regiment of the Indian Army but I never had a better one than yours and Snab Taylor’s 3rd Garhwalis and that’s something for such a dyed in the wool Gurkha as me to say. But it’s true. They were splendid”.
  • As an apt recognition of the valiant efforts of the ‘Bhullas’ throughout the Second World War, the battalion was conferred with Battle Honours of ‘Gallabat’, ‘Keren’, ‘Berento’, ‘Massawa’, ‘Amba Alagi’ and ‘Citta De Castello’ and Theatre Honours of ‘Abyssinia’, ‘North Africa’ and ‘Italy’.
  • The major awards won by the battalion pre-Independence included two Distinguished Service Order, 11 Indian Order of Merit, 13 Military Cross, 12 Indian Distinguished Service Medal and 13 Military Medals.
  • During 1948, fighting to defend the frontiers of independent India at Tithwal, the battalion was awarded one Mahavir Chakra (awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Kaman Singh Pathania, the Commanding Officer), 18 Vir Chakra, Two Shaurya Chakra and 19 Mention-in-Despatches in one single operation, which has few parallels in the annals of the Indian Army. The battalion was honoured with battle honour of ‘Tithwal’ and Theatre Honour of ‘Jammu & Kashmir’.
  • The battalion also has the unique distinction of being part of the first ever overseas contingent of the Indian Army post independence, wherein it was employed in the Human Repatriation Mission in Korea during 1953-54. The battalion has performed impressively in a number of other operations such as 1965 War, 1971 War, Operation Blue Star, Operation Shanti, Operation Trident, Operation Kartoose, Operation Parakram and Operation Rakshak.
  • The rich legacy of the battalion since its raising has always been fuelling pride and quest for excellence in all ranks of the battalion as they march on towards greater heights of glory and success.

About :

  • The Silent Valley, situated in South Western Ghats, is one among the world’s ten “Hottest Biodiversity Hot Spots” and is believed to be the sole surviving bit of virgin tropical rain forests in India. Located about 80 km north east of Palakkad, Kerala, the 8952 sq km forest was declared a National Park on 14th November 1984 and now it forms part of the core of Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve.
  • The Silent Valley forests go back beyond history to reflect the mythological past of India. It is reflected in the names still current : Sairandhrivanam, the alternate name of the forests derived from Draupadi‘s name and the Kunthi River named after the mother of the Pandavas.
  • The evolutionary age of Silent Valley, the evergreen rain forests, is believed to be more than 50 million years. This is a cliff forest cut off on all sides by steep ridges and escarpments. The topographic isolation of Silent Valley has prevented human habitation, allowing the forest to remain untouched and to emerge as an ecological oasis, preserving the flora and fauna. It is not clear who named it the “Silent Valley”. It is believed that the name owes Its origin to the relative absence of the cicadas which normally provide a distinctive sound in the forest environment.
  • The flora of the Valley includes about 1000 species of flowering plants, 107 species of orchids that include rare, endemic and endangered forms, 100 species of ferns and fern allies, 200 liverworts, 75 lichens and about 200 algae. The orchids spring amidst the vegetation, from tree trunks and from crevices of rocks. They bloom in an abundance of colours and shape. Ipsea Malabarica – an endemic ground orchid which has been lost and found after one and quarter century, is a testament to excellent forest conservation values.
  • This valley is home to 23 mammalian species including three endangered ones: the tiger, the lion tailed macaque and the Nilgiri langur. Other than the elephant, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, common langur, Nilgiri tahr, tiger, leopard, sloth bear, Gaur, wild dog, etc., The Silent Valley is home to birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and insects whose variety and profusion is an enduring delight – the colour and abundance virtually impossible to capture or recreate through brush and paint or on camera in its entirety.
  • The rich and virgin forest underwent a tumultuous phase in its history during 1977-80 when the Silent Valley Hydroelectric Project (SVHP) was proposed. This project would have submerged 830 hectares of forest. The struggle that followed to preserve the forest was perhaps one of the most successful stories of protection of the environment, capturing the imagination of writers, artists, scientists, politicians, nongovernmental organisations, media and the public alike. It became an irrepressible people’s movement which resulted in saving the Silent Valley and led to the declaration of the Silent Valley as a National Park by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister in 1983. Today it is a symbol of a people’s campaign for conservation, “the flagship of ecological arid environmental awakening in India“.
  • Dr. Salim Ali observed that “Silent Valley” is not just an evergreen forest, it is a very fine example of one of the richest, most threatened and least studied habitat in earth.
  • Silent Valley exudes a quiet grandeur and exuberance of life. In her heart many songs lie in a deep silence. Silent Valley, indeed, is a poem on earth and much more. It is a banner to carry the environmental conscience ahead.

About :

  • The fourth Gorkha Rifles has a 150 year long history of valour, glory and selfless service.
  • Raised as an “Extra Regiment” at Pithoragarh on 6th August 1857 under the Command of Lt. D. Macintyre, it was the last battalion to be raised by the East India Company‘s rule in India. The transportation from a ‘Young Regiment’ to seasoned campaigner did not take long as the Regiment proved its mettle during 1st and 2nd Afghan Wars. The Regimental Centre is located at Subathu since 1953. At present, the Regiment has five battalions.
  • Before independence, only British Officers were posted in the Gorkha Regiments. Brig. Moti Sagar had the honour of becoming the first Indian Colonel of the Regiment after the superannuation of Gen. Lentaigne in 1955.
  • The Regiment and its affiliated Rashtriya Rifles battalion continue to excel in all spheres of military activity. To cite a few instances, the First Battalion spearheaded the operation for relief of the garrison at ‘Punch‘. The Second Battalion along with 2 Grenadiers captured Gurais and Kanzalwan, thus sealing the enemy’s route into the Kashmir valley from the north. The 1962 Chinese aggression saw the Third Battalion operating in Ladakh and the First being rushed to NEFA. The two battalions of the Regiment saw action in 1965 Indo-Pak War. The First, Second and Third battalions of the regiment saw action in western front in J&K. The magnificent fight put up by the Third battalion on the highest battlefield of the World, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy; and defeating its attacks is a glorious chapter in the history of the Regiment and the Indian Army. All battalions of the Regiment have over a period of time been actively involved in counter insurgency operations in the North Eastern States, J&K and Punjab.
  • Second Battalion had the distinction of participating in United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon as the first Indian battalion.
  • Lt. Col. Puran Bahadur Thapa of Third Battalion represented the country in football at the Melbourne Olympics. Sub Dhan Bahadur of Fifth battalion distinguished himself by winning the Silver medal in the Asian Boxing Championship, Bronze medal at SAF games at Dacca in 1985 and a Bronze medal at Seoul, Asian Games in 1987.
  • The Regiment has the distinction of providing large number of Senior Officers who have held prestigious appointments in the Indian Army, a matter of pride for a small Regiment, comprising only five battalions.
  • Text : Based on material provided by the proponent.
