About :

  • Uddhavdas Mehta, was born on 9 August 1911 in Bhopal. He was the son of Pt. Moolchand Ji Pauranik. He received formal education in Sanskrit and Ayurveda at Kashi. Along with being a highly regarded Ayurvedic physician, he was also deeply engaged in the preparation of classical, scripture-based medicines.
  • His life was defined by fearlessness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to public welfare. He firmly rejected various official positions and inducements offered by the Nawabi regime, choosing instead to stand with the suffering masses and fight for their rights. In 1930, he presented a 25-point charter of demands before the Nawab.
  • In 1934, he launched “Praja Pukar,” Bhopal’s first Hindi weekly newspaper, demonstrating exceptional courage in journalism under repressive rule. As a result, cases were filed against him by both the Nawabi and British authorities, but he was honourably acquitted. His involvement in the Civil Liberties Movement, Hyderabad Satyagraha, and the establishment and expansion of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Bhopal remains historically significant. In 1947, his indefinite fast against communal violence forced the Nawabi administration to restore damaged temples and compensate losses.
  • He played a decisive role in the movement for Bhopal’s merger with the Indian Union. A lifelong champion of Ayurveda, he organized the Ayurvedic fraternity, initiated the celebration of Dhanvantari Jayanti, and served as President of both the Bhopal Ayurvedic Mandal and the Madhya Pradesh Ayurvedic Mandal. Recognized as both a Freedom Fighter and a defender of democracy, his life remains an enduring inspiration of service to society and the nation.

About :

  • India’s geographical diversity has blessed it with an unparalleled wealth of medicinal plants, which form the bedrock of various traditional systems of Medicine. The following five plants, in particular, showcase the varied therapeutic potential and the targeted use of specific plant parts in healing practices:
    • Asparagus racemosus Willd. (Shatavari): The plant is a perennial, prickly climber and a highly branched undershrub found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of India. It is used as an adaptogen to help the body manage stress, supporting reproductive health, digestion, immunity, and overall vitality.
    • Centella asiatica L. (Mandukparni): A perennial prostrate herb with creeping stems that root at the nodes, it has simple, reniform leaves with long petioles. The inflorescence is a loose, sub-capitate umbel. The dried whole plant is used for fever, itching, cough and anemia.
    • Piper longum L. (Pippali): A slender, aromatic, creeping perennial herb, the plant is used in dyspepsia, abdominal pain and diuretic splenopathy, anorexia, asthma and fever.
    • Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thoms. (Guduchi): A large, extensively spreading perennial woody climber with succulent stems, its stem is used for treating fever, cough, gout, worm infestation, anemia and skin diseases.
    • Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Ashwagandha): A perennial herb and erect, branched undershrub growing up to 1.25 m in height. It is useful as a rejuvenator and promotes intellect, stability and strength.
  • India is not only home to diverse medicinal plants but also a global centre of botanical knowledge, with traditional systems documenting nearly 8,000 plant-based remedies. A large share of the population, especially in rural areas, still depends on these accessible and time-tested natural medicines. Growing global preference for safe, holistic, plant-based products has further increased demand, making India one of the world’s leading exporters of medicinal plants and a key supplier to the herbal, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries.

About :

  • The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, is a globally renowned institution in the fields of mental health and neurosciences. NIMHANS traces its origins to the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum, established in 1847. Over time, the asylum evolved and was renamed the Mysore State Mental Hospital in 1925, reflecting a shift in the management of mental illnesses in India. In the early 20th century, this hospital, along with the Ranchi-based institution, was one of only two purpose-built asylums in British India, designed to offer a healing environment with modern attributes.
  • A key turning point in NIMHANS’ development came in 1954 when the Government of India sanctioned the establishment of the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH), based on recommendations from the Mental Health Advisory Committee and the Bhore Committee. The merger of the Mental Hospital and AIIMH in 1974 led to the creation of NIMHANS, integrating mental health and neurosciences under one roof. The Institute has since surpassed its initial role as a tertiary care centre, attracting patients from across India and neighbouring countries.
  • NIMHANS spans 135 acres and serves more than half a million patients annually. It offers state-of-the-art inpatient facilities and advanced rehabilitation services, with over 20 specialized clinics tailored to various conditions. The 1000-bed NABH-accredited hospital provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and laboratory services, round-the-clock emergency care, and neurosurgical units. The seven-floor Sub-Speciality Block, equipped with sophisticated operation theatres, addresses complex neurological and neurosurgical problems.
  • The Institute’s research initiatives are extensive, spanning areas such as addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, brain imaging, deep brain stimulation, head injury treatment, and pain management. Active collaborations with regional, national, and international agencies ensure NIMHANS remains at the forefront of medical research. The research extends across multiple disciplines, including molecular genetics, rehabilitation, youth mental health, and yoga, contributing significantly to advancements in mental health and neurosciences.
  • As a leading postgraduate training centre, NIMHANS offers over 90 specialized courses, including MCh, DM, MD, postdoctoral fellowships, MPhil, MSc, and diploma programs. These attract students from across India and abroad, making NIMHANS a global hub for education in mental health. Beyond education, the Institute works closely with healthcare practitioners and policymakers to improve patient outcomes and enhance the broader healthcare system.
  • NIMHANS has also played a crucial role in shaping national mental health policy, contributing to the formulation of the National Mental Health Policy and advocating for rights-based mental health care. The Bellary model of care, developed by NIMHANS, was adopted as the basis for India’s District Mental Health Programme. As the nodal centre for the Tele MANAS program, NIMHANS is at the forefront of innovative mental health service delivery, expanding access to care across the country.
  • The Institute’s remarkable growth has earned it the status of ‘Deemed University’ in 1994 and ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2012. It was the first Institute of National Importance in India to receive accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), setting a benchmark for quality healthcare. NIMHANS consistently ranks among the top healthcare institutions in India, reflecting its commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

About :

  • AYUSH systems of healthcare form the foundation of India’s Medical Heritage. These systems are not merely sciences of disease and drug, but have their conceptual spheres touching every aspect of life. Path-finding visionaries have appeared in each of the different streams of AYUSH systems at different times in history and made valuable contributions to the growth and development of respective practices.
  • Department of Posts is bringing out Commemorative Postage Stamps on 12 such Master Healers from different streams of AYUSH systems.
    • K. Raghavan Thirumulpad was an eminent Ayurvedic and Sanskrit Scholar, who inspired generations of Ayurveda students. He was a proponent of classical Ayurveda and symbolized a harmonious mix of ethics and rationality in the practice of medicine. He published more than 42 books. Motivated by nationalist movement, he participated in the propagation of Khadi. He founded Ayurvedic Medical Practitioners Hospital and Industrial Co-operative Society (AMPHIC) of Ayurveda Physicians running a manufacturing unit of quality Ayurveda medicines in 1970. A grateful nation conferred the honour of Padma Bhushan on him posthumously.
