About :

  • The State of Sikkim is unique in many ways that draw attention from every corner of the world. The land echoes tales of divine blessings, blending tradition and modernity in harmony, creating unity in diversity with strong civic sense.
  • Sikkim became the 22nd State of India in 1975, shifting from a monarchy to a democracy. Since then, the state has had a 32-member legislative assembly that ensures fair governance and public participation.
  • Rivers Teesta and Rangeet meander through the mountains and hills, providing water to the people for their needs and for life itself. While the rivers help with farming and agriculture, they also weave folklore of the land.
  • Mount Khangchendzonga, the tallest peak in the country, blesses every being with radiating crepuscular rays over hills and homes. The foundation of life itself has always revolved around maintaining equilibrium between the flora and fauna and the human communities. This very essence describes the sentiment of every Sikkimese.
  • The state has recorded forest land area that covers 82.31% of its geographical area. More than 4500 flowering plants with 532 species of wild, indigenous orchids, about 28 species of bamboo and over 300 species of ferns make it a botanist’s paradise. In the animal kingdom, more than 600 species of birds and butterflies, red pandas, snow leopards, musk deer, blue sheep, leopard cat, and flying squirrels are some of the species found in this small state.
  • The remarkable biodiversity of Sikkim also earned the state the first “Mixed Heritage” site of India in 2016, with Khangchendzonga National Park that falls under one of the rare high-altitude national parks of the country.
  • Since the time Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union in 1975, Sikkim has experienced changes that make it one of the most distinctive states across the nation through its forward-thinking approaches and people-oriented governance. The state pioneered organic farming by establishing itself as India’s first fully organic state through a quiet revolution, which combined traditional agricultural practices with scientific methods. This policy move represented a fundamental expression regarding identity control alongside ecological intelligence. The organic agricultural output from Sikkim has evolved into an important economic resource. Sikkim has emerged as an exceptional eco-tourism destination, which demonstrates how local people can gain from tourism while protecting vulnerable natural environments. The tourism industry in Sikkim now functions as a platform for cultural education while supporting local empowerment through village-run homestays and elderly-led heritage walks. The world discovers Sikkim’s monasteries along with its lakes and rhododendron paths and biodiversity, but it learns about slow living together with humility and coexistence. Sikkim has maintained a tourism policy that differs from exploitative models by establishing a respectful and responsible framework based on reciprocity. The modern tools of today have been accepted by Sikkim in harmony with its cultural wealth. The state continues to lead digital innovation through its high literacy rate by implementing smart villages and electronic government services and sustainable infrastructure.
  • Better infrastructure now exists throughout the mountains while educational facilities have improved, and both physical and digital connectivity have made significant advancements. Modernisation in this state has preserved traditional practices because it has improved them. Village knowledge centres coexist with monasteries, and solar-powered homes exist in harmony with age-old stone dwellings. Youth who previously migrated for education and employment now have an opportunity to stay at home to establish startups while curating cultural events and working on conservation projects, and developing creative business ideas that reconnect them with their heritage.
  • The commemoration of Sikkim’s fifty years as an Indian state is a journey of people, values, and landscapes. It is about how a small state with a population of just over six lakh people has shown the world that development does not have to come at the expense of identity, that tradition does not have to be opposed to innovation, and that a deep sense of belonging can drive bold futures. Sikkim is always reimagining itself without ever forgetting who it is.
  • From the first hoisting of the Indian flag in Gangtok to the establishment of institutions that empower its people, from the preservation of Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali languages to the digital aspirations of the next generation, the story of Sikkim is not a straight line but a beautifully winding path through mountains – each turn offering a new vista, each step grounded in grace. In its quiet strength and gentle wisdom, Sikkim shows us what it truly means to honour one’s roots while reaching for the sky.

About :

  • Arunachal Pradesh enjoyed a special identity as the North East Frontier Tract (NEFT) during the late 19th century British era. In 1954, the region was designated as NEFA through introduction of the North East Frontier (Administration) Regulation, 1954. NEFA was first brought under the Ministry of External Affairs, and in August 1965, the administration was transferred to the Ministry of Home Affairs, which supervised and controlled the region till 1972 when it gained the status of a Union Territory.
  • Modern-day Arunachal Pradesh, owes much to the vision of its founding fathers – the members of the erstwhile Agency Council, a body that functioned like the legislative assemblies of other states and was formed in December 1969. It was in the very first sitting of the Agency Council on December 3, 1969, that it was decided that NEFA’s capital should be within its boundaries. The decision to change NEFA’s name to Arunachal Pradesh was taken in the Agency Council’s second session which took place on August 10-11, 1970 in Shillong. Three names were considered – Udayachal (meaning, land of the sunrise), Brahma Mandal (the land of the Brahma) and Arunachal (the land of the rising sun). After intense discussions, the Council members unanimously selected Arunachal Pradesh as the name of the territory – a decision that was accepted by the Government of India.
  • On January 20, 1972 NEFA was rechristened as Arunachal Pradesh and was declared a Union Territory, a beginning into its self-governance. It would take another 15 years for this Union Territory to gain Statehood, which it did on February 20, 1987. Today, it is a fast developing state of 26 districts, each resplendent with its unique culture and tradition.
  • The Green State of Arunachal Pradesh has multitude of potentials which is being tapped for becoming Atma Nirbhar. In the last five decades, the state had attained a distinct mark on the map, notably in the realm of tourism. Arunachal is fast developing as a go-to adventure tourism destination with various opportunities in white river rafting, paragliding, trekking, biking destinations and wild life & bird watching activities etc.
  • The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has approved and adopted the first of its kind, ‘Pakke Tiger Reserve 2047 Declaration on Climate Change Resilient and Responsive Arunachal Pradesh’ or “Pakke Declaration” in November 2021 in alignment with COP 26 action plan. It focuses on a multi-sectoral approach to low-emission and climate-resilient development based on five broad themes or Panch Dharas aligning our annual action plan budget with SDGs.
  • The Hydropower sector has seen a boom with development of mini & micro hydels and dams all across the state. In terms of Agriculture & Horticulture sector; Arunachal Pradesh is the highest producer of Kiwi in the Country. The state is also attempting to introduce new potential fruits in the State like blue berry and walnuts which are not endemic to the state. The state is also a rich reserve for bamboos.
  • January 20, 2022 marked the 50 years of the state’s identity as Arunachal Pradesh. The state is celebrating a month long festival to commemorate it. As a testimony to the historic moment of naming of Arunachal Pradesh in Ziro on 20 January, 1972, the Celebration commenced with an inaugural ceremony at Ziro on 20 January, 2022. The Celebration will culminate at the capital, Itanagar on 20 February, 2022 marking the Valedictory celebration of 50 years of Arunachal and the initiation of 36th Statehood Day celebration.
  • The logo of the celebration has been created after conducting a competition along the theme of ‘Celebrating Past… Nurturing Future’. The logo consists of the state bird, Hornbill, the state flower, Foxtail Orchid and the current political map of Arunachal Pradesh.

About :

  • Tripura is a state in North-East India. It shares borders with Bangladesh, Mizoram and Assam. Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on its north, south and west. The length of its international border is 856 km (84 per cent of its total border). The state is connected with the rest of India by NH-44 that runs through Assam, Meghalaya, North Bengal, Kolkata and other parts of India.
  • Tripura has a long royal history. It had a pioneering role in the field of Art and Culture, Science and intellect. Tripura stepped into the modern age mainly during the reign of Maharaja Birchandra Manikya Bahadur. This was also the period when the great poet Rabindranath Tagore came in contact with Tripura.
  • The freedom movement of India brimmed over to the state of Tripura and the State contributed to the freedom movement. The last king of princely Tripura, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya realized that the freedom of India was not far away and it would be in the interest of the common people of the state that it should join the mainstream India. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, even before his death on May 17th 1947, decided to join the Indian Union. After his death, a council of Regence was formed under the leadership of queen Kanchanprabha Debi who signed the ‘consent Letter’ for merger on August 13th 1947. On the advice of the Government of India the council of Regency was dissolved and Kanchanprabha Debi was appointed the sole Regent. On September 9th 1949, in Delhi, the queen Kanchanprabha Debi, on behalf of her minor son Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, signed the Merger Agreement and on October 15th 1949 Tripura became a part of the Indian Union.
  • Thus ended the royal rule in Tripura and the process of democratization began from there. On January 26th 1950, Tripura was accorded the status of a ‘C’ category state without an assembly and put under the rule of a Chief Commissioner. To elect a member of Rajya Sabha, the first election in a democratic set-up in Tripura was held in January, 1952 and a 30-member Electoral College was formed.
  • Tripura was accorded the status of a Union Territory on November 1st 1956. With the objective of constituting the 30-member Tripura Territorial council the second general election was held in March, 1957. As per the Territorial council Act, 1956, the Tripura Territorial council, with its 30 elected and two government nominated members, started its administrative works from August 15th 1959. In February, 1962 the third general election was held to form the Tripura Territorial council. As per the union Territory Act, on July 1st 1963 the Tripura Territorial council was transformed into the first Legislative Assembly of Tripura. Accordingly, the first cabinet of Tripura consisting of five members was formed. And the post of Chief Commissioner was upgraded to the post of Lieutenant Governor in February, 1970. On January 21, 1972, Tripura attained the status of a full-fledged state, as per the North-East Reorganization Act of 1971.
  • Tripura, nestled in a tip of the Northeast, flourishes on the bounties of nature but the beauty of the State is heightened by its human resources on the one hand and rich cultural tradition on the other. Folk culture of the tribal and non-tribal people of the State forms the backbone of Tripura’s cultural tradition. Hoza Giri, Garia and Dhamali are the major dance forms of the State.
  • After the formation of new government in 2018, the government has adopted multi-pronged programme to rejuvenate the cultural heritage of tribes, ensure quality education, modern communication system, better power supply system, drinking water facility etc. as welfare activities.

About :

  • The State of Meghalaya is located in north-east part of India. The State was carved out of Assam as an autonomous state in April 1970 and was declared a full-fledged State in January 1972. It is bounded by Bangladesh on the South and West and Assam on the West, North and East. It extends for about 300 kilometres in length and about 100 kilometres in breadth. The state has been divided into 11 districts and 46 C & RD Blocks for administrative purposes.
  • Tucked away in the hills of eastern sub-Himalayas is Meghalaya, one of the most beautiful State in the country. Nature has blessed her with abundant rainfall, sun-shine, virgin forests, high plateaus, tumbling waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, meandering streamlets and above all with sturdy, intelligent and hospitable people.
  • Emergence of Meghalaya as an Autonomous State on 2nd April, 1970 and as a full-fledged State on 21st January, 1972 marked the beginning of a new era of the geo-political history of North Eastern India. It also marked the triumph of peaceful democratic negotiations, mutual understanding and victory over violence and intrigue.
  • The State is subject to vagaries of the monsoon. The average annual rainfall is about 2600 mm over western Meghalaya, between 2500 to 3000 mm over northern Meghalaya and about 4000 mm over south-eastern Meghalaya. There is a great variation of rainfall over central and southern Meghalaya. At Sohra (Cherrapunjee), the average annual rainfall is as high as 12,000 millimetres, but Shillong located at a distance of about fifty kilometres from Sohra receives an average of 2200 mm of rainfall annually.
  • Meghalaya is one of the States in India covering an area of approximately 22,429 square kilometres, out of this area about 70% of the state is forested. The Meghalaya subtropical forests eco region encompasses the State; its mountain forests are distinct from the lowland tropical forests to the north and south. Meghalaya has predominantly an agrarian economy with a significant commercial forestry industry. The State is geologically rich in minerals. The state has about 1,170 kms of national highways. It is also a major logistical centre for trade with Bangladesh.
  • Meghalaya has an ideal location advantage for South East Asia Market. The neighbouring countries of India viz Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar has been involved with the State for business and commerce. It has a huge potential to reach other South Asian countries as well. Meghalaya is also geographically rich in minerals and has the potential for industrial set-ups based on these mineral resources. Above all, the Meghalaya Industrial Policy is framed for the ease of doing business and increase trade and commerce. The added advantage being the climate in Meghalaya is good for the development of electronics chips.
  • The art and craft of Meghalaya has the uniqueness of its own. They are very intricately made and beautiful to look at. Tourist coming to this northeastern part are mesmerized to see the sheer wonder of art and craft of Meghalaya. The abundance of bamboo makes it possible for the artists to make the bamboo and cane products. The three tribes of Meghalaya – the Garos, the Khasis and the Jaintias are apt in making different kinds of cane and bamboo products and in weaving. These products have now received recognition not only in the national market but also in the international market and are much in demand.

About :

  • Manipur literally meaning “A jewelled land” nestled deep within a lush green corner of North East India. It seems much like an exquisite work of art executed by superb hands of Nature and is indeed a State of exquisite natural beauty and splendors. Manipur lies on a melting pot of culture. This is the place where Rajashree Bhagyachandra created the famous Ras Lila, the classical dance of Manipur, out of his enchanting dream by the grace of Lord Krishna.
  • Bestowed with diverse flora and fauna, Manipur is home to host a species hard to spot elsewhere. One with an inclination for tourist adventure will be greeted in this state with pleasant surprises ranging from virgin forests to cascading waterfalls, breath-taking hill-sites, valley-view and streams flowing to lakes levelled by shades of emerald.
  • The fish cuisines offered by the local eateries pamper one’s palate with a flavour one would find missing even in the world-acclaimed foods elsewhere in the world. If you are a sports-freak, freak out at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex at Imphal, a unique complex which houses all the major stadia in one complex, or be enthralled by the skilful matches of the State’s indigenous games. One with a penchant for classical dances may enter into a show of Manipuri Dance and get entranced for hours. Of course, the piece-de-resistance is the unique handloom and handicraft products. Rows of open stalls in concrete sheds manned by women folk of the main market display such stuff in colourful varieties.
  • The hills of Manipur echo and reflect different sound and sights. They are inhabited by ethnic groups with a global outlook. Food habits there tilt heavily on non-vegetarian delicacies. Cross-topped church-spires adorn the countryside. Feminine dresses are often embroidered with traditional patterns.
  • The people of Manipur include Meitei, Naga, Kuki, Meitei Pangal and other colourful communities which have lived together in complete harmony for centuries. These are the people whose folklore, myths & legends, dances, indigenous games and martial arts, exotic handlooms & handicrafts are infested with the mystique of nature. The wonders has no end in Manipur.
  • Having teetered under the yoke of British colonialism from 1891 to 1947, it is to the credit of freedom loving Manipur is that their collective walk along the path of mainstream nationalism has not tottered in the post-independence era. 1949 heralded the merger of Manipur with the Union of India. In 1972, it became a full-fledged State with a 60 members Legislative Assembly out of which 19 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and one for Scheduled Castes. The people of Manipur elect two MPs for the Lok Sabha and one MP for the Rajya Sabha.

About :

  • Himachal Pradesh came into existence as Chief Commissioner’s Province on 15 April, 1948 exactly eight months after India’s Independence as a result of the integration of 30 small and big princely Hill States. Mr. N. C. Mehta, Indian Civil Service (ICS) was appointed as the first Chief Commissioner assisted by his deputy Mr. E. Penderal Moon, ICS.
  • The Mahasu district was formed by merging 26 small and big princely states of Shimla Hill States. Mandi and Suket princely states were merged to form Mandi district. Chamba and Sirmaur were given the status of separate districts. 23 tehsils were formed in these four districts. Himachal Pradesh had an area of 10,451 sq. miles with population of 9,83,367. In July 1954, Bilaspur was merged with Himachal to form the fifth district of the state.
  • After the formation of Himachal Pradesh, other leaders including Dr. Y.S. Parmar continued their struggle with the Government of India to form a popular government in the State. Himachal Pradesh was made a part ‘C’ state with the provision for Vidhan Sabha. The first elections for the Vidhan Sabha in Himachal were held in 1952, in which voting was held for 36 seats. In March 1952, Dr. Parmar was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of this state and formed his Cabinet of three members. The other two ministers in his cabinet including were Pandit Gauri Prasad and Pandit Padam Dev.
  • In December 1953, the Government of India set up a Commission for the re-organization of States. Dr. Parmar wrote a letter to the chairman of the commission urging him to merge the hilly areas of Punjab in Himachal Pradesh but acting contrary, the commission suggested Himachal Pradesh to be merged with Punjab. This endangered the very existence of Himachal Pradesh. The people and different political parties of the state strongly opposed this suggestion and as a result, the Union of India assured to maintain its separate existence keeping in view of the geographical, cultural and economic conditions of the state. After the enactment of the ‘States Reorganization Act’ in 1956, the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha was abolished on 31 October, 1956 and was replaced by a Territorial Council. Thus, Himachal Pradesh became a Union Territory on 1st November, 1956.
  • Elections to the Territorial Council were held in 1957. On 15 August, 1957, Thakur Karam Singh was sworn in as the Chairman of the Council. The Territorial Council was only a local Self-Government and the Lt. Governor exercised all the powers of administration. However, the people of the State were not satisfied with this system. Ceding to the demand, the Lok Sabha passed the Government of Union Territories Act in 1963 and converted the Territorial Council into Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on July 1, 1963. As a result, a three-member cabinet was formed again and Dr. Y.S. Parmar became the Chief Minister for the second time.
  • Considering the similarity in geographical conditions, culture, social system, language, lifestyle and ethos, the people and politicians of Himachal Pradesh had been long demanding that hilly areas like Kangra, Kullu, LahaulSpiti, Shimla, Una, Nalagarh and Dalhousie should be included in Himachal Pradesh.
  • When the Government of India set up the ‘Punjab States Reorganization Commission’ in 1965, the Himachal Pradesh Government also sent a draft related to formation of ‘Vishal Himachal’ to the Union of India and the Chairman of the Punjab States Reorganization Commission, to include the hilly areas of Punjab in Himachal. Based on recommendations of the Commission, the Government of India presented ‘Punjab States Reorganization Act’ in parliament and passed it consequently. Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, Kullu, LahaulSpiti, Shimla, Nalagarh, Kandaghat and Dalhousie etc. were included in Himachal Pradesh on 1st November, 1966. With the inclusion of these areas, the total area of Himachal was increased to 55,673 sq. km which continues to be same today.
  • Attainment of Statehood
    • The merger of the hilly areas of Punjab with Himachal Pradesh led to the geographical, social, cultural and linguistic reunification of the people but the state was yet to get status of Statehood. In December 1970, the Parliament passed the ‘State of Himachal Pradesh Act-1970’. On 25 January, 1971, the then Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi herself visited Shimla and announced to grant the Statehood status to Himachal Pradesh making it the 18th State of India.
    • Thus, 25 January, a day of great happiness for the hardworking and innocent people, political leaders, freedom fighters and workers of Prajamandals of the state realized the long cherished dream come alive. The State is completing its 50 years of magnificent journey on 25th January, 2021 and Golden Jubilee Year to be celebrated to make it memorable in annals of history.
  • Development journey of the State
    • Himachal Pradesh has traversed through difficult phase for attainment of Statehood. This state, which came into existence on 15 April, 1948, started its onward development journey from scratch, and the development that Himachal Pradesh has achieved is inspiring for other hilly regions during the last 50 years. Since then, the state has witnessed all-round development making a huge leap in socio-economic transformation. Despite tough geographical conditions and limited resources, State has made significant progress in all spheres particularly in the areas of agriculture, horticulture, road network, education and health.
    • According to the available data of 1951-52, the total literacy rate in the state was only 4.8 percent while the female literacy rate was only 2.9 percent. 301 educational institutions were functional in the State, limited to urban areas only. There were only 88 health institutions and 288 km road length. There was lack of facilities with regard to irrigation, drinking water etc. People of villages had to walk miles to fetch water from springs and water bodies. Electricity was available only in six villages. The per capita income was only Rs. 240.
    • An area of 3.92 lakh hectares (1951-52) was cultivated for agricultural purpose and production of food grains were limited to 1.99 lakh metric tonne at that time. The reorganization of Punjab in the year 1966 led to some increase in agricultural land and food production due to new areas added to the state. An area of 7,76,000 hectares was under agriculture while food production was 7,04,000 metric tonne. Today, agricultural activities are being done on 9.55 lakh hectares in the state and food production has also increased to 16.36 lakh metric tonne (year 2019-20).
    • In 1951-52, state had an area of only 792 hectares under horticulture and the yield was only 1200 metric tonne. The area increased to 26,260 hectares in 1966-67 and fruit production reached 45,370 metric tonne. Fruit remained the most important and main cash crop of this region. At present also, horticulture is being carried out over an area of 2,32,139 hectares with the government initiating to develop Himachal Pradesh as a fruit bowl of India and providing various incentives to the horticulturists. Around 7.07 lakh metric tonne of fruit are being produced every year.
    • In the year 1971, when this state attained Statehood, even then the development was limited to select areas. Road length in the state was less than 7740 km. The literacy rate was only 31.3 percent. There were 482 health institutions and 4963 educational institutions. Electricity was available in 2944 villages of the state and the per capita income was only Rs. 651.
    • Today, Himachal stands amongst one of the most progressive and prosperous states in the country. The length of roads in the state has been increased to 38 thousand kilometers. More than 97 percent of the panchayats are connected with roads. A target has been set up to connect the remaining panchayats with roads soon. The numbers of educational institutions have increased to 15,553 and literacy rate is 82.80 percent. A large network of 4,320 health institutions in the state is providing best of the medical facilities to the people. Electricity is available in all the villages of the state today. Moreover, Himachal Pradesh has become a ‘Power Surplus State’ now. The per capita income has also increased to Rs. 1,95,255.
    • The present government has also contributed a lot for taking State to new heights and also ensured overall development of the State. State has received several National level awards for better performance in good development, health, education, sustainable development including agriculture and horticulture during this period. As a result of many new schemes and initiatives, the state is moving ahead on the path of constant progress.

About :

  • The Portuguese advent in India gained momentum in 1510, with the invasion of the Western coast line and annexation of a few colonies including Goa. Though the people of Goa were peace loving they resented Portuguese occupation of their territory and the accompanying reprisal measures. They sought liberation. The first spark of the freedom movement was ignited by the Ranes when Dipaji Rane spearheaded a revolt in 1852. Another one followed in 1885, led by Dada Rane. The last rebellion took place in 1912, and the leaders at the forefront Morya Sawant, Jill Sawant and their companion Cutodio (Quistulo) were killed due to treachery. In all, there were 14 rebellions by Ranes but all of them were crushed. Consequently, activities of the freedom movement were shifted beyond the borders of Goa.
  • Many organisations like National Congress Goa, Azad Gamantak Dal, United Front of Goans, Goa Liberation Council, Goan People’s Party, Quit Goa Organization and Goa Vimochan Sahayak Samiti were formed. Some believed in armed struggle. They infiltrated into Goa and attacked Portuguese troops and their supply positions.
  • On 18th June 1946 people assembled under the leadership of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia to defy the curbs on civil liberties and chart out the future course of action towards freedom and democracy. A seminar on Portuguese colonialism was held in New Delhi in October 1961 in which the leaders from Africa called upon Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister to lead the struggle of liberating Portuguese colonies. At the end of the seminar there was a public meeting in Mumbai during which the Prime Minister declared : “We have to think afresh now because of the happenings in Goa. In the last three months, cases of torture have come to our notice besides terror that is spread there by the Portuguese. We will have to adopt other means to solve the problems. Goa will soon be free“.
  • The Indian Army, assisted by Air Force and Navy, launched an armed action code named “Operation Vijay” on 18th December 1961. The liberation of Goa from Portuguese occupation was completed on 19th December 1961. On 20th June 1962, the status of Union Territory was conferred upon Goa, Daman and Diu. In the opinion poll that took place during 1967, people of Goa firmly voted to retain their separate identity, rejecting merger with the State of Maharashtra. Finally, on 30th May 1987, Goa was accorded statehood and Daman and Diu were bifurcated and accorded the status of Union Territory.
  • Goa is situated along the Konkan coast of India. It has a coastline of 105 km, Six rivers, namely Mandovi, Zuari, Sal, Terekhol, Chaporaand, Talpona flow through the State. The climate of Goa is generally pleasant and equitable throughout the year. The beaches of Goa attract tourists from all over the world.
