• Bhagavatula Sadasiva Sankara Sastri, better known by his pen name Arudra, made significant contributions to poetry, literary scholarship, cinema, dance research, and cultural preservation. He was a rare blend of creative brilliance and academic rigour.
• Born on 31 August, 1925 in Visakhapatnam, Arudra hailed from a distinguished family whose history stretches back four centuries. His early years were shaped by traditional learning, but he broke away from convention early, rejecting caste-based practices and embracing a humanist worldview. His first poetic awakening came during the Japanese bombing of Visakhapatnam in World War II, which inspired Loha Vihangalu (Metal Birds). This powerful anti-war poem marked his literary debut.
• Arudra’s formative years were eclectic. He served in the Royal Indian Air Force, worked as a photographer, and eventually immersed himself in journalism and the Telugu film industry. His early literary mentors under whose influence Arudra honed his craft, blending modernist aesthetics with social commitment. Throughout his life, Arudra was a relentless learner, whether mastering chess, explore the depths of Telugu literary history and revived near-forgotten classical dance forms like Vilasini Natyam.
• Arudra’s magnum opus, Samagra Andhra Sahityam, remains the most comprehensive documentation of Telugu literary history to date. Originally spanning thirteen volumes, later condensed into four, it traces the evolution of Telugu literature from its origins to the modern era, making it a foundational reference for scholars and enthusiasts alike. His ability to weave historical rigour with engaging narrative ensured that this work became accessible beyond academia.
• As a poet and lyricist, Arudra brought literary finesse to popular culture. He penned over 3,000 film songs, many of which became cultural staples, effortlessly blending poetic sophistication with mass appeal. His film lyrics, from devotional hymns to romantic duets, demonstrated his versatility and deep understanding of both classical and contemporary idioms. His landmark works include Tvamevaham, a searing poetic refection on war and human suffering, and countless film songs that continue to resonate across generations.
• Arudra was also a passionate researcher and revivalist of traditional arts. His scholarship on Vilasini Natyam, a classical dance form, played a pivotal role in its preservation and revival. His interdisciplinary approach-bridging literature, cinema, dance, and even magic, epitomised his belief that true art transcends rigid boundaries.
• Arudra considered himself a Sangha Jeevi, a people’s writer who believed that while epics live on paper, lyrics live in the hearts and voices of the people. • Of all the regional cultures, Odisha or the ancient Kalinga played a very conspicuous and vital role in the cultural matrix of Indian civilization. From the time immemorial Odisha has attracted a large number of scholars, artists and tourists.
• Kantakabi Lakshmikanta Mohapatra was born at Bakharabad, Cuttack on 09.12.1888. He hailed from the family of freedom fighters and received the honour of Kantakabi in 1934. From his childhood, he was fond of songs, music, drama and literature. By cruel blow of destiny, he was affected by leprosy; but it could not prevent him from pursuing his creative writing. He contributed to all aspects of literary world of Odia literature. He has written beautiful parodies, the most famous among them is “Chataka Chandra Hasa Champu”. Kantakabi used to encourage young writers through his magazine, “Dagara”, which was being published from Bhadrak, Odisha.
• When the freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi gripped the entire nation, Kantakabi through his patriotic songs used to enthuse the masses. He also actively participated in the movement of unification of Odia speaking areas and penned down “Bande Utkal Janani”, the song which has been accorded the State Anthem by the Odisha State. He breathed his last on 24.02.1953. He lives in the heart of Odia people through his immortal work.

• It is not often that one comes across stories of people who have had a strong vision and mission guiding their entire life. Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane is one such person who never let his interest in research fade the slightest. Born in a village called Pedhem near Chiplun in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on May 7, 1880, Dr. P.V. Kane is a source of unending inspiration to generations of young Sanskritists and Indologists.
• Dr. Kane was a precocious child who had committed to memory, 400 verses of Amarakosa, by the age of 12. He passed his Matriculation examination of Bombay University in 1897. He passed his B.A. with Sanskrit and was awarded Bhau Daji prize for proficiency in Sanskrit. In 1902, he passed first LL.B. examination in First Class and got his M.A. in 1903, with Sanskrit and English, securing the Zala Vedanta prize of Rs. 400/- for the paper setting and answered in Sanskrit.
• While he was working as a teacher in the Government High School in Ratnagiri, he wrote an essay on ‘Aryan Manners and Morals as depicted in the Epics’, which got him the Mandalik Gold Medal of the Bombay University in 1905. He wrote another essay on ‘History of Alankara Literature’ in 1906 and secured the Mandalik Gold Medal again. He started teaching in Elphinstone High School in 1907. His career as an advocate at the High Court began in July, 1911.
• He passed his LL.M. examination in Hindu and Mahomedan law in 1911. His association with the Bombay Branch with the Royal Asiatic Society started as one of its ordinary members; 2 years later he became its Life Member. In 1916, he worked as Honorary Professor of Sanskrit in Wilson College, his own Alma Mater. He was Professor of Law, Government Law College from 1917 to 1928.
• Prof. Kane’s career at the Bar proved to be a great success. He came to be recognized as an authority at Hindu Law, respected by the Bench and Bar. He worked in the legal field from 1919 to 1949. At the same time, he pursued his Indology studies. His introduction to Sahityadarpana of Vishvanatha published in 1910, so highly impressed the French Scholar Sylvan Levi that he urged Kane to write a full-fledged history of Sahityashastra.
• In 1923, Kane published a 2^nd edition of Sahityadarpana with an introduction of 77 pages dealing with the history of Alankarashastra. In the 1951 edition, this history was enlarged to 423 pages and then published as a separate volume, in 1961. Dr. Kane’s researches in Dharma-Shastra started in 1911 by undertaking an edition of a book called Vyavahara Mayukha. Kane’s critical edition of the work was published in 1928.
• He was a Fellow of the University of Bombay from 1919 to 1928. He was conferred the title of Mahamahopadhyaya in 1942 by the British government. In 1947, he became the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bombay. The President of India named Kane as member of the Rajya Sabha first in 1953 and again in 1958. This gave him an opportunity to work with several committees considering Hindu Adoption Act, the Hindu Marriage Act, The Hindu Succession Act. His interpretations of original texts were accepted by the Parliament when Hindu Succession Act was placed on the statute book. He was appointed National Professor of Indology in 1959. Sahitya Academy awarded its prize for the fourth volume of Dharmashastra in 1956. In 1963, Dr. P.V. Kane was awarded with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India.
• Asiatic Society of Bombay had been his second home. He took part in the activities of the Society as member of its Managing Committee as well as its Vice President for several years. He was also editor of its Journal. He was one of the Founders of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. He was closely associated with the Deccan College as well as Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad.
• History of Indian culture and religion will remain incomplete without a reverential reference to his monumental work. His contributions are marked by an extensive sweep of his research interest and activity in the domains of Mimamsa, Dharmashastra, Indian astronomy and astrology, Sanskrit poetics, and the Indian jurisprudence.

• The fourteenth child of Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 at Jorasanko, Kolkata. His creative genius was nothing short of epic-poet, essayist, writer of fiction and drama, musician, performer, educator and builder of institutions. His work has a universality that marks the triumph of humanism and creativity with a social purpose. Dropping out from formal education, he set up two unique school : Patha Bhavan and Siksha Satra and an international University Visva Bharati and Santiniketan.
  
• He wrote his first drama ‘Prithvirajer Parajey‘ in 1873 but today no copy of this exists. The next year his poem ‘Abhilasha‘ was published in ‘Tattwabodhini Patrika‘ and in 1875 he made his first public appearance to recite his patriotic poem ‘Hindumela Upohar‘. His study of Law at the University College of London remained incomplete as he returned in 1880. His writing of prose, verse, drama and music was prolific. Through the years of marring to Mrinalini Devi, birth of five children and the ups and downs of his personal life, he continued to write and involve himself in the social and political problems of India.
  
• His first book, ‘Sandhya Sangit‘, was published in 1880 and in 1881 he wrote his first musical drama ‘Valmiki Pratibha‘. He advocated education in the mother tongue, critical of the prevalent system of English education. He started a Swadeshi store in Kolkata and a jute pressing factory in Kushtia to promote indigenous goods and employment for youth. He read a paper ‘Kantharodh‘, reacting to the arrest of Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1898.
  
• Moving to Santiniketan with his family, Tagore revived Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya‘s monthly journal ‘Bangadarshan‘. The nucleus of Santiniketan was begun in 1901 but the foundation stone was laid in 1918. He advocated a policy of constructive non-cooperation against the British through his articles and essays, but withdrew from the ‘Swadeshi‘ movement disillusioned over the political exploitation of the Hindu-Muslim conflict.
  
• ‘Gitanjali‘, his magnum opus, was first published in Bengali (1910). A meeting with the British painter, William Rothenstein, led to the publication of ‘Gitanjali‘ in English by the India Society of London, with an introduction by W.B. Yeats. Macmillan, London, also published ‘Gitanjali‘ along with ‘The Gardener‘, ‘Crescent Moon‘ and ‘Chitra‘ and in 1913 Tagore became the first Asian recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Knighted in 1915, he also met Gandhi the same year at Santiniketan. He renounced his Knighthood in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1930.
  
• In 1916 he began his journeys to countries in Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and the USA, writing and speaking on nationalism, education and culture and also raising funds for the Visva Bharati University. He was often invited for Lectures at Universities. Doodles on his writings led to this emergence as a painter in 1924. Performing in his plays, holding exhibitions of his paintings, delivering lectures, writing and publishing his works, expanding Santiniketan, leading a protest against the High Detention Camp shooting incident – Tagore‘s life was a multi-coloured fabric in which not a single thread was wasted.
  
• In 1940 Oxford University conferred a Doctorate on him. His last lecture was read out at his eightieth birthday. He breathed his last on 7^th August 1941.

• Pundit Udayananda Arjyal was born in Saptari district of Nepal in 1812 B.S. His father, Bisheswor was a teacher (guru) of King Bikram, who was the Sen Monarch of Chaudandi. Pt. Udayananda Arjyal used to write in different languages such as Sanskrit, Nepali, Maithili, Farsi, Urdu and Bhojpuri. He composed famous epic of Prithvindrodaya, which depicted the then social, economic and cultural aspects of Nepal. The other writings of Udayananda include the books like Someshwor Vijaybarnan, Navaratna Stotra, Duswopnaharan, Betal Pacchchisi etc. He was also a noted land surveyor. His contributions to border security, customs management, personal administration, justice and management of arms and ammunitions are notable.

• Born on 7 May, 1861, in the Jorasanko house at 6, Dwarkanath Tagore Lane, Calcutta, Rabindranath was the fourteenth child of Devendranath Tagore (1817-1905) and Sarada Devi (1826/27-1875).
• The family discovered Rabindranath’s gift for song and poetry quite early in his life. His first poem to appear in print was ‘Abhilash’ in the Tattavabodhini Patrika in 1874 where it was described to be a twelve year-old boy’s composition. The next year, he made his first public appearance as a poet reciting a patriotic poem of his own composition at the ninth session of the Hindu Mela.
• His first literary writings appeared first in Jnanankur O Prativimba and later in the family literary journal ‘Bharati’. In 1878 he accompanied his brother Satyendranath to England where he studied English Literature at the University College, London. The year 1881 also saw him writing his first musical play, Valmiki Pratibha and appearing himself in the title role. In 1883 he was married to Mrinalini. Rabindranath spent the next decade of his life (1890-1900) mainly in the countryside, in close contact with the children of the soil.
• The Monthly ‘Sadhana’ was founded by him in 1891. The ‘Sadhana’ phase was also a phase of constructive nationalism for Rabindranath. At a public meeting presided over by Bankimchandra Chatterji, he read out a well argued political essay on ‘Ingraj O Bharatbasi’. He advocated widespread use of the mother-tongue as a medium of education and described ‘self help’ and ‘self respect’ as the backbone of ‘Swadeshism’. On the other hand, he invoked India’s history and legends in the poems of ‘Katha Kahini’ to inculcate patriotic and national sentiments. When the Viceroy proposed vivisection of Bengal, Rabindranath came out of his seclusion at Santiniketan to lend his powerful voice on behalf of the nation against this act of high-handedness. He preached swadeshi, composed heart stirring swadeshi songs, wrote trenchant essays, addressed meetings and even headed protest demonstrations. His reminiscences were serialized in the ‘prabasi’ and the original Bengali poems of ‘Gitanjali’ and the play ‘Dakghar’ were published the same year.
• In 1912 he read at Overtoun Hall his famous essay, ‘My Interpretation of India’s History’, wherein he gave a prose paraphrase as it were of his ‘Jana Gana Mana’ song, now the National song of India, earlier composed for the anniversary of the Brahmo Samaj, proclaiming that India stood for unity in the midst of diversity. The Swedish Academy selected ‘Gitanjali’ for the Nobel Award in Literature for 1913. In 1915 he was knighted by the King-Emperor. The same year, Tagore and Gandhiji met for the first time at Santiniketan.
• In 1918, the foundation was laid at Santiniketan of the Institution which came to be known as the ‘Visva Bharti’ World University. During the next two years 1919-20, Rabindranath travelled all over India inviting support for the Visva Bharti. In 1919, he relinquished his knighthood as a protest against the British atrocities at Jallianwala Bagh in the Punjab.
• On 7 August, 1940, on behalf of Oxford University, Sir Maurice Gwyer conferred its doctorate on Rabindranath at a special Convocation arranged at Santiniketan. Although his literary work continued till the end, by the beginning of 1941, his chronic kidney trouble started causing continuous trouble. On 14 April, when his 80^th birthday was celebrated at Santiniketan on the Bengali New Year’s Day, he questioned the British intention towards India’s struggle for independence in a trenchant address entitled “Crisis in Civilisation”. On 7 August 1941 he passed away in Calcutta after a surgical operation.
