• On 23^rd March, 1925, the Association of Indian Universities was incepted as the ‘Inter-University Board of India,’ an authorised central agency to develop higher education in India to the highest standards with the concerted efforts of all universities and other higher education bodies together. It was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, on September 29, 1967, and was rechristened as the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) in 1973. It is now a flagship body for Indian higher education institutions and a valued source of research-based policy advice to the Government of India. Starting as a start-up with higher education as its focus, it has been growing resiliently and resolutely, adding new and allied dimensions like the Equivalence of Degrees/Qualifications of Indian and Foreign Universities, Research and Training, Sports, Cultural Activities, Promotion of Youth Affairs, etc., into its ambit. • The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is a leading Indian institution dedicated to polar and ocean research, operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Established in 1992 in Vasco-Da-Gama, Goa, as the Antarctic Study Centre to support the Indian Antarctic Expeditions. This early focus on Antarctic logistics laid the foundation for its evolution into a prominent scientific research hub.
• Since its inception, NCPOR has undergone significant transformation. • The Ranchi Institute of Neuro–Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS), located in Kanke, Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a premier institution in the field of mental health care, boasting a rich legacy that dates back over two centuries.
• The origins of RINPAS can be traced to the establishment of a Lunatic Asylum in 1795 at Munghyr. After its relocation to Patna Collegiate in 1821, it was eventually shifted to Namkum and then to its present location in Kanke, Ranchi in April 1925. The nomenclature of the Lunatic Asylum was changed to Indian Mental Hospital (IMH). It began operations with 110 male patients on 4^th September 1925 and 53 female patients on 19^th September 1925. • RINPAS is also known for its contributions to mental health research and community outreach. • Mysore Medical College is the first and oldest medical college in the state of Karnataka. It was established in July 1924 by the then visionary King of Mysore, Sri Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar. The college was successful in imparting medical education of the highest standards. The doctors trained here were highly regarded everywhere. Encouraged by this, more and more medical colleges were opened in Karnataka, both by the Government and private institutions. Today, Karnataka is rightly called the Medical Education Hub with 67 medical colleges. But it all began with the excellence achieved in the field of medical education by one institution — Mysore Medical College.
• Initially, 30 students were admitted to Mysore Medical College with the establishment of the Physiology and Anatomy departments. They were given clinical training at Krishna Rajendra Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital, which function alongside the medical college. The then Superintendent of Krishna Rajendra Hospital, Dr. J. F. Robinson, was selected as the first Principal of Mysore Medical College.
• The Mysore Medical College celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1949, which was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar and presided over by Dr. Lakshmana Swamy Mudaliar, Vice Chancellor of Madras University. Union Minister Dr. Amrit Kaur and many other distinguished personalities participated as guests of honor.
• The Golden Jubilee of the college was celebrated under the chairmanship of Sri Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, icon of the Mysore royal dynasty, in 1974.

• The Mysore Medical College has sailed through a saga of 100 years. • Nestled in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO), established on 1 April 1899, has been a leading centre for solar research in India for over a century. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, this longest-running astronomical observatory in the country boasts one of the world’s longest continuous daily records of the Sun. Originally an extension of the Madras Observatory (est. 1792), KSO’s focus shifted exclusively to solar observation in Kodaikanal due to its strategic high-altitude location (2,343 metres), which offered optimal atmospheric conditions.

The KSO has also played a crucial role in developing advanced observational techniques and instrumentation for solar research.
• The Observatory has meticulously recorded observations of the Sun’s photosphere and chromosphere on photographic plates and films for more than a century. • The National School of Drama (NSD) is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. Established in 1959 as a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, NSD became an independent entity in 1975. It was registered as an autonomous organisation under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and is fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. • NSD offers a highly intensive, thorough, and well-structured three-year training programme that integrates theory with practice. • NSD has two major performing wings: the Repertory Company and the Theatre-in-Education (TIE) Company, each contributing uniquely to theatres in India and beyond.
• The NSD Repertory Company was established in 1964 to provide a professional platform for graduates of the school. Initially starting with four artists—Shri Ramamurthy, Ms Meena Williams, Ms Sudha Shivpuri, and Shri Om Shivpuri — the company has since evolved into a major institution within NSD. It regularly stages contemporary, modern, and experimental plays, offering theatre lovers a rich and diverse experience. The company also organises its own annual festival, presenting past and new productions each summer.
• Founded on 16 October 1989, the Theatre-in-Education Company, also known as ‘Sanskar Rang Toli’, is one of the most significant theatre education resource centres in India. This wing is composed of actor-teachers who perform and engage with children in schools. The plays created under Theatre-in-Education (TIE) are designed to be interactive, curriculum-based, and age-appropriate, fostering creativity and critical thinking among students. Since its inception, the TIE Company has performed over 800 shows of 26 plays across India, reaching more than 5.5 lakh children, as well as educators, parents, and theatre enthusiasts.
• NSD is also actively involved in theatre outreach and education through its Extension Programme and Traditional Theatre Project.
• Launched in 1978, the Extension Programme aims to decentralise theatre training by conducting workshops in different parts of India and neighbouring countries like Nepal, and Bhutan. These workshops not only introduce participants to theatre but also contribute to their personality development and emotional growth.
• The Traditional Theatre Project, initiated in 1980, bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary theatre. • The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, is a globally renowned institution in the fields of mental health and neurosciences. NIMHANS traces its origins to the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum, established in 1847. Over time, the asylum evolved and was renamed the Mysore State Mental Hospital in 1925, reflecting a shift in the management of mental illnesses in India. In the early 20^th century, this hospital, along with the Ranchi-based institution, was one of only two purpose-built asylums in British India, designed to offer a healing environment with modern attributes.

• 1 May 2022 marked the 125^th anniversary of the Ramakrishna Mission, a social service organization with a spiritual outlook. It was founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, the seer of modern India, to work for the all-round development of India.
• Swami Vivekananda, known in his pre-monastic life as Narendra Nath Datta, was born in an affluent family in Kolkata on 12 January 1863. By the time he graduated from Calcutta University, he had acquired a vast knowledge of different subjects, especially Western philosophy and history. Born with a yogic temperament, he used to practise meditation even from his boyhood, and was associated with Brahmo Movement for some time.
• In November 1881, Narendra went to meet Sri Ramakrishna, his spiritual guru, who was staying at the Kali Temple in Dakshineshwar. Apart from removing doubts from the mind of Narendra, Sri Ramakrishna won him over through his pure, unselfish love. Thus began a guru-disciple relationship which is quite unique in the history of spiritual masters.
• During his travels all over India, Swami Vivekananda was deeply moved to see the appalling poverty and backwardness of the masses. To carry out his plans for the spread of education and for the uplift of the poor masses, and of women, Swami Vivekanand, felt the need of an efficient organization of dedicated people. He wanted “to set in motion a machinery which will bring noblest ideas to the doorstep of even the poorest and the meanest.” It was to serve as this ‘machinery’ that Swami Vivekanand founded the Ramakrishna Mission in the year 1897. It was registered as a society in 1909.
• For the last 125 years, the Ramakrishna Mission has distinguished itself through its various service based programmes. It extends service in the areas of healthcare, education, rural and tribal development, disaster relief and rehabilitation, general welfare, spiritual and cultural work, publication of books and journals and other fields. It runs hospitals, dispensaries, homes for the aged, orphanages, schools, colleges, polytechnics, ITIs, a deemed university, agricultural institutes, and special institutions for the disadvantaged sections of society. It’s charitable and philanthropic works have found wide acceptance and appreciation by the public.
• Members of the mission provide services to the people as means to the attainment of the ultimate goal of human life, which, according to Sri Ramakrishna, is realization of God. Here charity to the poor and needy is prompted not by egotistic compassion, but is conceived as service rendered in a spirit of worship of God, who resides in every human being. Instead of looking upon a needy person as an object of pity, he is looked upon as an object of worship. Owing to this spiritual outlook, the services conducted by the mission are meant for the benefit of all people – without any distinction based on religion, caste, colour or class.
• The main workforce of the Ramakrishna Mission consists of dedicated monks who are members of the Ramakrishna Math. Though the Mission and the math are distinct legal entities, they are referred to as twin organizations, and they join hands in running all the service activities. As of February 2023, there are 202 branches of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, spread over 27 states / Union Territories of India. Outside India, the organization has 67 branches in 24 countries. The headquarters of the twin organizations is located at Belur Math in Howrah district, West Bengal.
• Perfect accountability, efficient management, and sincere and honest enterprise are some of the hallmarks of the work of the Ramakrishna Mission. The Mission has received several awards and recognitions for its selfless service, including the prestigious Gandhi Peace prize for the year 1998, conferred by the Government of India. The prize carried a citation that noted, “The Ramakrishna Mission has become a great source for peace and happiness amongst people in this country and abroad.”
• The motto of Ramakrishna Mission, set by Swami Vivekananda, is “For one’s own salvation and for the welfare of the world.” Endowed with this lofty ideal and sustained by the dedication of its members, the Ramakrishna Mission is expanding its influence with time.125 Years is a significant milestone in the Mission’s journey to bring about spiritual regeneration of humanity.
