  • It is not often that one comes across stories of people who have had a strong vision and mission guiding their entire life. Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane is one such person who never let his interest in research fade the slightest. Born in a village called Pedhem near Chiplun in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on May 7, 1880, Dr. P.V. Kane is a source of unending inspiration to generations of young Sanskritists and Indologists.
  • Dr. Kane was a precocious child who had committed to memory, 400 verses of Amarakosa, by the age of 12. He passed his Matriculation examination of Bombay University in 1897. He passed his B.A. with Sanskrit and was awarded Bhau Daji prize for proficiency in Sanskrit. In 1902, he passed first LL.B. examination in First Class and got his M.A. in 1903, with Sanskrit and English, securing the Zala Vedanta prize of Rs. 400/- for the paper setting and answered in Sanskrit.
  • While he was working as a teacher in the Government High School in Ratnagiri, he wrote an essay on ‘Aryan Manners and Morals as depicted in the Epics’, which got him the Mandalik Gold Medal of the Bombay University in 1905. He wrote another essay on ‘History of Alankara Literature’ in 1906 and secured the Mandalik Gold Medal again. He started teaching in Elphinstone High School in 1907. His career as an advocate at the High Court began in July, 1911.
  • He passed his LL.M. examination in Hindu and Mahomedan law in 1911. His association with the Bombay Branch with the Royal Asiatic Society started as one of its ordinary members; 2 years later he became its Life Member. In 1916, he worked as Honorary Professor of Sanskrit in Wilson College, his own Alma Mater. He was Professor of Law, Government Law College from 1917 to 1928.
  • Prof. Kane’s career at the Bar proved to be a great success. He came to be recognized as an authority at Hindu Law, respected by the Bench and Bar. He worked in the legal field from 1919 to 1949. At the same time, he pursued his Indology studies. His introduction to Sahityadarpana of Vishvanatha published in 1910, so highly impressed the French Scholar Sylvan Levi that he urged Kane to write a full-fledged history of Sahityashastra.
  • In 1923, Kane published a 2nd edition of Sahityadarpana with an introduction of 77 pages dealing with the history of Alankarashastra. In the 1951 edition, this history was enlarged to 423 pages and then published as a separate volume, in 1961. Dr. Kane’s researches in Dharma-Shastra started in 1911 by undertaking an edition of a book called Vyavahara Mayukha. Kane’s critical edition of the work was published in 1928.
  • He was a Fellow of the University of Bombay from 1919 to 1928. He was conferred the title of Mahamahopadhyaya in 1942 by the British government. In 1947, he became the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bombay. The President of India named Kane as member of the Rajya Sabha first in 1953 and again in 1958. This gave him an opportunity to work with several committees considering Hindu Adoption Act, the Hindu Marriage Act, The Hindu Succession Act. His interpretations of original texts were accepted by the Parliament when Hindu Succession Act was placed on the statute book. He was appointed National Professor of Indology in 1959. Sahitya Academy awarded its prize for the fourth volume of Dharmashastra in 1956. In 1963, Dr. P.V. Kane was awarded with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India.
  • Asiatic Society of Bombay had been his second home. He took part in the activities of the Society as member of its Managing Committee as well as its Vice President for several years. He was also editor of its Journal. He was one of the Founders of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. He was closely associated with the Deccan College as well as Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad.
  • History of Indian culture and religion will remain incomplete without a reverential reference to his monumental work. His contributions are marked by an extensive sweep of his research interest and activity in the domains of Mimamsa, Dharmashastra, Indian astronomy and astrology, Sanskrit poetics, and the Indian jurisprudence.

Name : Deendayal Upadhyaya

Born on Sep 25, 1916 at Dhankia, Rajasthan, India

Died on Feb 11, 1968 at Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, India

About :

  • Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on September 25, 1916, in the village of Dhankia in Rajasthan. His childhood was spent in an ordinary household. His father Shri Bhagwati Prasad and mother Smt. Rampyari were religious minded who believed in the Sanatan faith. Deendayal, who was called Deena by the family, lost his father, Bhagwati Prasad, when he was less than three years old, and his mother before he was eight. He was brought up and educated at his maternal grandfather’s place under difficult conditions. Deendayal drew strength from the hardships and sufferings around him and rose above his circumstances through sheer gift and determination.
  • He received primary education at Kota and Rajgarh. He matriculated from Sikar. He stood first in the board exam and Maharaja Kalyan Singh of Sikar, presented him with a gold medal, a monthly scholarship of Rs. 10 and Rs. 250 towards his books, as recognition of his merit.
  • Deendayal went to Pilani to study for his Intermediate. He topped the board examination in 1937 with distinction in all subjects. He was the first student of Birla College to have fared so well. G.D. Birla presented him with a gold medal, a monthly scholarship of Rs. 10 and Rs. 250 towards books, as recognition of his merit. He graduated with first division from Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur in 1939 and joined St. John’s College, Agra for pursuing his Master’s Degree in English Literature. He passed the Provincial Services Exam, but he did not join as he was not interested in administrative services. Deendayal, therefore, left for Prayag to do his B.T. His special areas of interest were sociology and philosophy.
  • Deendayal was an extremely disciplined and devoted person. Though deprived of the love and affection of his parents, grandparents and of any material acquisitions, Deendayal, with his devotion to service, humility and modesty earned respect of those around him. He chose to help weaker students. He formed Zero Association in Pilani to help the students weak in studies.
  • While studying for his graduation in Kanpur in 1937, Deendayal came into contact with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) through his classmate Baluji Mahashabde. He met the RSS founder, Dr. Hedgewar there. This inspired him to devote his life for the people. He attended the 40 day summer vacation RSS camp at Nagpur where he underwent training in Sangh Education (OTC) in 1939 and 1942. After completing his education and second-year training in the RSS Education Wing, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya became a life-long pracharak of the Sangh. He entered politics through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, became the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, and later its President. His life was thus an embodiment of thorough political thought process.
  • Deendayal Upadhyaya was the author of “Samrat Chandragupt” which appealed to youngsters as a historical novel with its own distinct literary flavor. “Jagadguru Shankracharya” was his second novel. His objective was to inspire the youth to look back to the country’s glorious past, take pride in it and dedicate their lives to the revival of that ancient glory. ‘Why undivided India’ was written at a time when Deendayal Upadhyaya himself was preparing to enter politics.
  • Deendayal was a deep and original thinker. In the field of politics and economics, he was pragmatic and down to earth. He visualized for India a decentralized polity and self-reliant economy with the village as its base. He was open to the use of modern technology but wanted it to be adapted to suit Indian requirements.
  • He placed the nation’s interests above everything else. The background of Integrated Humanism is the harmonization of Indian and Western thoughts. According to him man should be at the centre of our entire system. The system in which there is a mediocre development of a man’s body and mind, the soul is incomplete; it creates only a man motivated by cunningness and self-interest, not a complete human being, whereas emphasis should be on the development of the Complete Man, who can represent the various harmonized strands of thought and culture.
  • Deendayal Upadhyaya started a monthly magazine “Rashtra Dharma”, a weekly ‘Panchajanya’, and a daily ‘Swadesh’. In 1951, when Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, Deendayal became the first General Secretary of its U.P. branch. He was also chosen as All India General Secretary.
  • After Dr. Mookerjee’s death in 1953, the entire burden of nurturing the organization and building it up as a nation-wide movement fell on the young shoulders of Deendayal. For 15 long years he remained the party’s General Secretary. He raised a band of dedicated workers imbued with idealism and provided the entire ideological frame work of the party. The final triumph of his statesmanship and vision was the historic session of the Party in 1967. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was active in India’s political life from 1937 to 1968. On February 11, 1968 Deendayal Upadhyaya was found dead in the early hours near the Mughalsarai station while traveling in a train.
  • Politics was a means, not the end, for him. It was a journey not destination. He wished to spiritualize politics. He was inspired by India’s glorious past and wanted to build a brighter future for the country. He had a dream of making India into a prosperous modern nation. He lived and strived forwards these goals.

Name : Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade

Born on Jun 24, 1863 at Varsai village, Raigad district, Maharashtra, India

Died on Dec 31, 1926

About :

  • Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade (1863-1926), one among the pioneering historians of India, was a multifaceted personality who left his imprint in many other disciplines like Linguistics, Literature, Geography, Oleography and Sociology also.
  • V.K. Rajwade hailed from the Raigad district of Maharashtra. After completing his education in Pune, he took up the teaching profession and settled in Pune. The sad and untimely death of his wife in 1894 was a turning point in Rajwade‘s life. Overlooking the advice from different quarters to remarry, he decided to devote the rest of his life to the selfless pursuit of knowledge, through which he fructified his desire to serve the country. Meticulous in his research and prodigious in output, Rajwade wrote on a variety of subjects. However, he is remembered most for his path breaking work in historiography. His writings inspired many research scholars in Maharashtra and other parts of India to pursue the subject at a time when works of European historians dominated the academic discourses in Indian history. It is no exaggeration to say that his work revolutionized the way the subject of history was perceived in India and helped to advance an Indian view of history, which held that history included the totality of the activities of the society.
  • By founding the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal at Pune in 1910, he institutionalised his research procedures. He also changed the way history was being researched by giving as much importance to non-documental sources of history like costumes, articles of house hold use, buildings and works of art as was being given to written archival material like letters and manuscripts. He had highlighted the importance of folk literature and other oral evidences as useful historical sources much ahead of contemporary historians in most parts of the world. He had stressed five aspects in his research methodology, viz. collection of original historical records, preservation of records, examination and classification of records, editing and publications of records and interpretation of sources and writing of histories.

Name : Keshav Sitaram Thackeray

Born on Sep 17, 1885 at Panvel, Bombay Presidency, British India

Died on Nov 20, 1973 at Bombay, Maharashtra, India [now Mumbai]

About :

  • Keshav Sitaram alias Prabodhankar Thackeray made a mark in modern Maharashtra by virtue of his leadership in the social, political and intellectual spheres.
  • Writings to Lokhitwadi, Agarkar and Mahatma Phule had a formative influence on Prabodhankar. He became a significant critic of religious conformism and launched an attack on malpractices like tonsuring widows, untouchability and practice of dowry. With a remarkable insight into the contemporary social processes, he concluded that professional priesthood was at the root of many of the injustices meted out to women and the under-privileged classes. He used any opportunity that came his way to propagate reformist ideas. He was quick to realise the potential of journalism for spreading social messages and used the press effectively to fight social evils.
  • Prabodhankar Thackeray was a prolific writer, having penned many plays, biographies and booklets. His writing was focused on social causes and not just literary excellence. He was also accomplished as a historian and an artist. Through his spirited writings and enthusiastic socio-political movements he tried earnestly to spread the message of Mahatma Phule and Dr. Ambedkar.
  • The Samyukta Maharashtra movement, in which he played an important role in the autumn of his life, was perhaps the most important struggle in his life. Its successful culmination, unifying several diverse parties, stands testimony to Prabodhankar‘s diplomacy and leadership qualities.

Name : Naurang Rai

Born on Feb 22, 1889 at Deva, Dullahpur, Ghazipur, United Province, British India

Died on Jun 25, 1950 at Patna, Bihar, India

About :

  • Swami Sahajanand Saraswati (1889-1950) was a sanyasi as well as a revolutionary, who dedicated his life to the cause of political and economic independence of the Indian people.
  • Born in the district of Ghazipur of Uttar Pradesh, he was brilliant as a young student. Renouncing his home and family and adopting the way of asceticism, he moved to Varanasi where he devoted nine years to the study of Sanskrit and Hindu philosophy. The struggle for independence took stronger form with the advent of Mahatma Gandhi to the country. Gandhiji‘s impassioned speeches inspired the nation in the non-cooperation and civil disobedience phases of the National Movement and Swami Sahajanand Saraswati was deeply influenced by the Mahatma‘s call to the nation. He went on to play a prominent role in organising the non-cooperation movement in the Shahabad district of Bihar and the adjoining district of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. By addressing public meetings, rousing the masses to actively participate in the movement and collecting the Tilak Swaraj fund, he made significant contributions to spreading the movement for which he was arrested immediately and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year.
  • From 1924 to 1928 his activities centered on the propagation of Khadi and prohibition, the two most important items of Mahatma Gandhi‘s constructive programme. Simri village in Shahabad district and Bihata in Patna district became two important centres of his activities. He established a Khadi weaving centre at Simri and an Ashram for political and Sanskrit teaching at Bihata. As a recognition of his work for the Congress, he was first elected a member of the UPCC and then of the BPCC and the AICC.
  • While advocating the abolition of the zamindari system and creation of peasant proprietorship as the central slogans of agrarian reforms, he took up the burning issues of feudal oppression, such as forced labour, illegal exactions, evictions etc., for organising Kisan resistance and struggle. By the mid-thirties the Kisan movement in Bihar under his inspiring and militant leadership became a powerful political force which worked for the defeat of landlords by the Congress in the 1936 elections to the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The first Congress Ministry which was formed in Bihar as a result of the 1936 elections could not but undertake a number of tenancy reforms, bringing much needed relief to the newly awakened peasants.
  • Swami Sahajanand was a powerful agitator and propagandist, and his speeches moved and moulded millions of peasants in the defence of their rights. Swamiji came to be addressed as ‘Kisan Pran‘ (life of Kisans) by his Kisan Sabha followers. Such was his popularity that Sahajanand Day was observed throughout Bihar on 19 April 1940 in protest against his arrest. In 1949, only a year before his death, the country honoured him by celebrating his Diamond Jubilee and presenting him a purse of Rs. 60,000/- on the occasion.
  • He was also a forceful writer and ran the Hindi weekly Hunkar from Patna. His noted works on peasant problems and struggle include ‘The Other Side of the Shield‘, ‘Rent Reduction in Bihar: How it Works‘, ‘Gaya Ke Kisano Ki Karun Kahani‘ (Pitiable stories of the Kisans of Gaya), ‘How the Kisans Fight‘ and ‘Kisan Sabha Ke Sansmaran‘ (Reminiscences of the Kisan Sabha).

About :

  • Hazari Prasad Dwivedi was born in District Balia (U.P.) and keeping with family tradition got his early education in Sanskrit. In 1930 he passed the Inter-mediate and Acharya Examination in Astrology from Banaras Hindu University. From 1940 to 1950 he was the Director of Hindi Bhavan in Vishvabharti (West Bengal). He came in close contact with Rabindranath Tagore during his stay in Shantiniketan. It is said that the deep faith in the human spirit which is developed and later manifested in his writings took roots under the influence of Tagore.
  • He was appointed a member of the first Official Language Commission in the year 1955 and was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1957. In 1960, he was offered the post of Professor and head of the Department of Hindi by the Punjab University, Chandigarh, a post which he held almost till his retirement. However, a little before retirement he came back to the Banaras Hindu University as its rector and ultimately chaired the U.P. Hindi Academy.
  • He made an effort to analyse Hindi literature in the context of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit and Apabhransha literature and also as a natural development of composite Indian thought. He believed that the basic concern of great literature should be to uphold human values and this can only be achieved by keeping in mind the broad base of unified stream of humanity and not limit it to the elitist sensibility. Therefore, in all his writings whether on a particular period or a poet, Dwivediji based his conclusion primarily on this concern for human values. He wrote an essay on the theme Human being is the goal of all human activity including literature. Hindi sahitya ki bhumika is his most significant work as his basic principles and approach to literature are manifested in this work.
  • In his four lectures compiled under the heading Hindi sahitya ka adikal, he has reinterpreted the new discoveries and researches in a manner that necessitated a fresh enquiry into the history of Hindi literature.
  • Banabhatta ki Atmakatha which was followed by Punarnava and others like Charuchandralekh Anamdas ka Potha also initiates a prose style, not commonly used even for historical themes. He offers lengthy descriptions in an ornate prose style, which evokes a historical panorama. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi annual prize for his collection of essays Alok Parva in 1973.

Born on Apr 9, 1893 at Kanaila Village, Azamgarh District, Uttar Pradesh, British India

Died on Apr 14, 1963 at Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

About :

  • Maha Pandit Rahul Sankrityayan was born on April 9, 1893 at Pandaha, Azamgarh and was christened as Kedar Nath Pandey.
  • At an early age of 5, the young Kedar Nath was sent to an Urdu Madrasa and it was here that he came across a tale Khorai Ka Natiza which influenced him deeply. In addition the couplet below:
    सैर कर दुनिया की गाफिल, जिन्दगानी फिर कहां।
    ज़िंदगी गर कुछ रही तो, नौजवानी फिर कहां।
influenced his young mind deeply and thus was born his desire to roam. The young Kedar left his home at various stages of his life, matrimony not withstanding. The desire for freedom made him adopt a life of asceticism which drew him to the study of ‘Vedanta‘ and Hindu scriptures and he even became a Mahanta at Parsa in Bihar. After a short stint with the Arya Samaj, he became a part of the ‘Arya Musafir Vidyalaya’, where he learnt Sanskrit and Arabic and read the scriptures of various creeds prevalent in India of the early 19th century.
  • The Russian Revolution inspired Kedar to join politics and he became an active participant in the Non-Cooperation Movement launched by Gandhiji. After being jailed for his political activities, he took part in the Kisan Satyagraha in Bihar in 1939.
  • In the interregnum, Kedar embarked on various travels which took him to the distant lands of Ceylon where he embraced Buddhism and was re-christened, Rahul Sankrityayan. His greatest claim to fame was his unrelenting search for Buddhist scriptures which took him to far away Tibet four times, as a result of which he brought back to India 21 mule-loads of Tibetan literature. He also travelled to various countries of Europe, Far East and Russia. During the year 1944 to 1947 he worked as a Professor of Sanskrit and Pali in Russia.
  • Rahul Sankrityayan has written and translated over 123 books in Hindi and has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, during the last stages of his life. He died on April 14, 1963 at Darjeeling. His maxim and motto in life was:
    Go wandering life is short
O thou who is missing it.
    Even if you live long,
    what about the youth.
