• India’s geographical diversity has blessed it with an unparalleled wealth of medicinal plants, which form the bedrock of various traditional systems of Medicine. The following five plants, in particular, showcase the varied therapeutic potential and the targeted use of specific plant parts in healing practices:
  • Asparagus racemosus Willd. (Shatavari): The plant is a perennial, prickly climber and a highly branched undershrub found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of India. It is used as an adaptogen to help the body manage stress, supporting reproductive health, digestion, immunity, and overall vitality.
  • Centella asiatica L. (Mandukparni): A perennial prostrate herb with creeping stems that root at the nodes, it has simple, reniform leaves with long petioles. The inflorescence is a loose, sub-capitate umbel. The dried whole plant is used for fever, itching, cough and anemia.
  • Piper longum L. (Pippali): A slender, aromatic, creeping perennial herb, the plant is used in dyspepsia, abdominal pain and diuretic splenopathy, anorexia, asthma and fever.
  • Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thoms. (Guduchi): A large, extensively spreading perennial woody climber with succulent stems, its stem is used for treating fever, cough, gout, worm infestation, anemia and skin diseases.
  • Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Ashwagandha): A perennial herb and erect, branched undershrub growing up to 1.25 m in height. It is useful as a rejuvenator and promotes intellect, stability and strength.
• India is not only home to diverse medicinal plants but also a global centre of botanical knowledge, with traditional systems documenting nearly 8,000 plant-based remedies. A large share of the population, especially in rural areas, still depends on these accessible and time-tested natural medicines. Growing global preference for safe, holistic, plant-based products has further increased demand, making India one of the world’s leading exporters of medicinal plants and a key supplier to the herbal, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries.

• Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. At the age of 14, he began his mission to promote human values of truth, righteous conduct, peace, love, and non-violence, while stressing the unity of all religions. His life of service and compassion inspired the establishment of numerous institutions devoted to education, healthcare, and rural development, benefiting millions, around the world.
• The Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust (SSSCT) continues his vision by offering free healthcare, education, and social welfare services without discrimination. Recognised by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with a Special Consultative Status, the Trust operates two super-speciality hospitals, two general hospitals, and two mobile hospitals that treat around 3,000 outpatients daily, completely free of charge. These hospitals are highlighted by NITI Aayog as exemplary not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare models devoted to “service to society as service to God”.
• In education, the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning provides free undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, combining academic excellence with character building. More than 5,000 students study in all these institutions and receive quality education free of cost. • The history of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) in India is a tale of unyielding dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment. For a century, these valiant caregivers have played a pivotal role in the Armed Forces Health Care systems, extending their Services to soldiers, their families, and various humanitarian efforts.
• The Military Nursing Service was the earliest type of nursing to evolve in the late 19^th Century. Modern nursing was founded after the Crimean War between Turkey and Russia in 1854-1856. The Army Nursing Service was established in 1888. In 1896, the Nursing Service was renamed as Indian Army Nursing Service. In 1914, 473 Indian nurses were appointed during World War I, who went all over with the Indian soldiers and rendered exceptional services. On 1^st October 1926, the permanent Nursing Service came into being with 55 nurses. During World War II, Indian nurses were at the war front with courage and valour; many nurses were taken Prisoners of War and many laid down their lives for the country. On 15^th September 1943, an ordinance was promulgated to constitute a force to be called the Military Nursing Service (India) as part of the Armed Forces of India.
• The terms and conditions for the grant of regular commission in the MNS were laid by Army Instruction 274/50 on 12 August 1950. The cadre strength of service has grown from 1110 to 5368. The Officers of Military Nursing Service undergo further specialisation through Post Basic (PB) BSc, MSc and PB Diploma in clinical specialities. The Military Nursing Service is a Cadre of highly skilled, competent officers.
• The integration of Military Hospitals and the introduction of modern medical practices enhanced the role of military nurses. The Military Nursing Service has a rich history of dedication and exemplary service in both war and peace. The 1962 Sino-Indian War, 1971 Indo-Pak War and Kargil War underscored the pivotal role of the Military Nursing Service in times of conflict, demonstrating exceptional courage and valour.
• Military Nursing Officers participated in UN Peacekeeping Missions in Congo, Lebanon, South Sudan and in friendly foreign hospitals, earning respect and admiration on the global stage. They also played a significant role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Care of war-wounded patients in times of agony and despair requires strong determination. Hence, there was a requirement to prepare nurses for the Army. Accordingly, nurses were trained in selected civil hospitals. The Government of India sanctioned two schools of Nursing in 1950 in Pune and Delhi. The schools were gradually upgraded to the College of Nursing and at present, there are six Colleges of Nursing across the country in Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Lucknow. These institutions provide skill-based education for BSc Nursing, Master’s in Nursing Subjects and Post Basic (PB) diploma in 13 clinical specialities.
• The dedication and devotion to duty exhibited by the officers of the Military Nursing Service have been widely recognised. They have received distinguished honours such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, and Mention in Despatches, along with civilian awards like the Sarojini Khosla Nightingale Award, Nalwa Medal, and Mahila Shiromani Award.
• On January 26, 2024, history was made when 144 Military Nursing Service officers marched on Kartavya Path during the Republic Day Parade as part of the All-Women Contingent of the Armed Forces Medical Services.

• The Ranchi Institute of Neuro–Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS), located in Kanke, Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a premier institution in the field of mental health care, boasting a rich legacy that dates back over two centuries.
• The origins of RINPAS can be traced to the establishment of a Lunatic Asylum in 1795 at Munghyr. After its relocation to Patna Collegiate in 1821, it was eventually shifted to Namkum and then to its present location in Kanke, Ranchi in April 1925. The nomenclature of the Lunatic Asylum was changed to Indian Mental Hospital (IMH). It began operations with 110 male patients on 4^th September 1925 and 53 female patients on 19^th September 1925. The institution gradually became a central facility for patients transferred from regions such as Patna, Berhampur (Odisha), and Dacca (now Bangladesh).
• Post-independence, the hospital was renamed Ranchi Mansik Arogyashala (RMA) in 1958 and was managed under the Bihar State Government. It served patients from multiple Eastern and North-Eastern Indian states. RINPAS stands as a symbol of resilience, reform, and research.
• RINPAS is also known for its contributions to mental health research and community outreach. The faculty regularly publishes research articles in national and international journals, and indigenous psychological testing tools developed here are widely used. The ‘Tarang’ project is ongoing in the institute to train students to become Certified Stress Managers.
• In the year 2024-25 alone, the institute served over 71,000 patients, reflecting its critical role in India’s mental health infrastructure. RINPAS today extends its services far beyond the walls of its campus, ensuring that mental health care is accessible, compassionate, and comprehensive. The institute operates several toll-free helplines, offering immediate assistance to those in distress, while its Outpatient Department caters not only to psychiatric conditions but also to general health concerns such as eye, dental, and physiotherapy needs. Specialized counseling for addiction, stress, anxiety, women’s health, and child and adolescent issues further highlights its holistic approach.
• Within the Psychiatry Department, RINPAS provides diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of mental illnesses, including those related to substance abuse. Women in Jharkhand benefit from free mental health care, and the institute reaches out to rural and tribal communities through dedicated outreach programs. Alongside inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, the hospital also provides psychological testing, counseling, and rehabilitation support.
• The institute has established a network of free clinics that address mental illness, de-addiction, and psychological wellbeing. These include specialized units such as the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Psychological Guidance Clinics, a Mental Retardation Clinic, and a Counseling Centre. • Mysore Medical College is the first and oldest medical college in the state of Karnataka. It was established in July 1924 by the then visionary King of Mysore, Sri Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar. The college was successful in imparting medical education of the highest standards. The doctors trained here were highly regarded everywhere. Encouraged by this, more and more medical colleges were opened in Karnataka, both by the Government and private institutions. Today, Karnataka is rightly called the Medical Education Hub with 67 medical colleges. But it all began with the excellence achieved in the field of medical education by one institution — Mysore Medical College.
• Initially, 30 students were admitted to Mysore Medical College with the establishment of the Physiology and Anatomy departments. They were given clinical training at Krishna Rajendra Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital, which function alongside the medical college. The then Superintendent of Krishna Rajendra Hospital, Dr. J. F. Robinson, was selected as the first Principal of Mysore Medical College.
• The Mysore Medical College celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1949, which was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar and presided over by Dr. Lakshmana Swamy Mudaliar, Vice Chancellor of Madras University. Union Minister Dr. Amrit Kaur and many other distinguished personalities participated as guests of honor.
• The Golden Jubilee of the college was celebrated under the chairmanship of Sri Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, icon of the Mysore royal dynasty, in 1974.
• The Platinum Jubilee was celebrated on 15^th December 1999, and to mark the occasion, an indoor auditorium was constructed.
• The Mysore Medical College has sailed through a saga of 100 years. During this long journey, several outstanding personalities and members of the teaching staff have served this institution and brought out academic excellence from the students. Currently, in Mysore Medical College & Research Institute, there are 150 MBBS seats, 153 postgraduate seats, 01 Super Speciality (Plastic Surgery) postgraduate seat, 100 B.Sc. Nursing seats, 40 G.N.M. seats, 100 Paramedical seats and 50 B.Sc. Allied Health Science seats.
• K.R. Hospital, Cheluvamba Hospital, PKTB & CD Hospital, P.K. Trauma Care Centre, and the P.K. Super Speciality Hospital are part of the Mysore Medical College & Research Institute.
• Currently, the institution has 2,315 beds and caters to patients of Mysore District and the neighbouring four districts. The daily average of outpatients is around 2,600, and the average of inpatients is 160. 70 surgeries are performed daily, 25 deliveries take place, and 50 dialysis procedures are conducted around the clock.

These departments collectively perform a wide range of diagnostic procedures daily, including approximately 1,000 laboratory investigations, 350 X-rays, 200 ultrasound scans, and 100 CT scans. All these vital diagnostic services are made available round the clock, ensuring continuous support to clinicians and timely care for patients across departments.
• The institute is well equipped to handle health emergencies and pandemics like COVID-19, thanks to its robust infrastructure. This includes the installation of high-capacity liquid oxygen tanks to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply during critical times, and the establishment of a state-of-the-art Genomic Sequencing Laboratory, which enhances its ability to detect, study, and respond to viral mutations and emerging health threats swiftly and effectively.

• The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, is a globally renowned institution in the fields of mental health and neurosciences. NIMHANS traces its origins to the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum, established in 1847. Over time, the asylum evolved and was renamed the Mysore State Mental Hospital in 1925, reflecting a shift in the management of mental illnesses in India. In the early 20^th century, this hospital, along with the Ranchi-based institution, was one of only two purpose-built asylums in British India, designed to offer a healing environment with modern attributes.
• A key turning point in NIMHANS’ development came in 1954 when the Government of India sanctioned the establishment of the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH), based on recommendations from the Mental Health Advisory Committee and the Bhore Committee. The merger of the Mental Hospital and AIIMH in 1974 led to the creation of NIMHANS, integrating mental health and neurosciences under one roof. • NIMHANS spans 135 acres and serves more than half a million patients annually. The 1000-bed NABH-accredited hospital provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and laboratory services, round-the-clock emergency care, and neurosurgical units. • The Institute’s research initiatives are extensive, spanning areas such as addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, brain imaging, deep brain stimulation, head injury treatment, and pain management. • There are about 1.5 crore people in the tribal community in Madhya Pradesh. Tribal-dominated communities have a high incidence of sickle cell anemia, which is a serious health concern in these areas. Genetic counseling and community-level screening are crucial for managing patients and preventing the hereditary spread of the disease. The State Haemoglobinopathy Mission was established to provide a concrete approach to the prevention and treatment of sickle cell anemia. On November 15, 2021, the Honorable Prime Minister launched a pilot project for sickle cell screening in the districts of Alirajpur and Jhabua in honor of Janjatiyan Gaurav Diwas. Under the pilot initiative, a total of 9.17 lakh people has been tested.
• In the second phase, the Sickle Cell Eradication Mission – 2047 was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at the national level on July 1, 2023, from Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh, covering about 1.11 crore people in 89 development blocks of tribal-dominated districts, as well as in 17 states across the country. On World Sickle Cell Day, a state-level program was organized in Dindori district on June 19, 2024, in the dignified presence of Hon’ble Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar. In this second phase, a total of 71.27 lakh population screenings have been conducted so far, identifying 1,49,305 sickle carriers and 22,666 sickle patients.
• To strengthen the testing and treatment facilities for sickle cell patients, arrangements have been made for confirmatory testing by HPLC machines in each district hospital. Additionally, tests such as CBC, total iron, serum ferritin, etc., are being provided free of cost. Special Counseling Card for Identification and Genetic Counseling of Sickle Cell Patients started as well. Genetic counseling cards are being distributed to all screened sickle cell patients to prevent the spread of the sickle cell genetic blood disorder. A total of 46.04 lakh genetic cards have been distributed so far.
• Sickle cell patients found positive in confirmatory investigations are being counseled and treated at Integrated Treatment Centers run at the district level. All patients are provided with hydroxyurea, folic acid medicines, and free blood transfusions as needed. A mobile app and a National Sickle Cell Portal have been developed for reporting and tracking data related to sickle cell screening. Sickle cell anemia is being managed by obtaining rapid test results at the screening site through confirmatory testing using POC Kits (Point of Care Kits). The availability of POC Kits at the institutional level has been ensured through contracted rates with the state. All pregnant women and newborns are being examined for sickle cell anemia using the POC kit.
• For special investigations in newborns within 72 hours of birth, a lab has been set up at AIIMS Bhopal, and testing samples are sent from tribal-dominated districts to this lab. Training and technical support for screening and management of sickle cell anemia are being provided by ICMR–NIRTH, Jabalpur. Training has been conducted for field workers, as well as managerial and medical staff posted in all 89 tribal-dominated development blocks of the state. In collaboration with Sankalp India, prenatal diagnosis of pregnant women is being performed to prevent the spread of sickle cell disease to the next generation.
• A treatment and follow-up booklet has been developed to guarantee the availability of medication, treatment, and comprehensive management for sickle cell patients identified during screening. It also aims to provide ongoing monitoring to ensure that sickle cell patients receive regular treatment and management, including consistent doctor reviews.

• Medical education took its nascent steps in North East India with the establishment of Berry White School of Medicine, Dibrugarh in 1900. Dr John Berry White was a great philanthropist who left his will, donating his entire life savings of Rs 50,000 towards the institution which produced LMP (Licentiate Medical Practitioner) doctors until before India gained independence.
• When the need of having a full-fledged medical college arose in Assam after independence, the seed sown by John Berry White ensured that Dibrugarh had the first claim to the effect. Public meetings were held and citizen groups constituted to rally for a medical college in Dibrugarh.
• Assam Medical College, as we know today started functioning from the abandoned military base hospital of US army in the 2^nd World War in the Barbari area of Dibrugarh. First batch of MBBS in the year 1947 had 57 students.
• The pioneers who were instrumental in the establishment of Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh were Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Chief Minister, Ram Nath Das, Health Minister, Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah and others. Dr Hem Chandra Baruah was the founder principal of the college.
• At present Assam Medical College boasts of an annual intake of 200 MBBS seats and 217 Post graduate seats. Till date 9,172 MBBS graduates have qualified from its portals, are flying the flag of their alma mater high, shining in patient care, research as well as extra-curricular activities.
• The college has 28 full-fledged departments, which includes 8 (eight) super speciality departments. Whereas post graduate courses were recognized by the then MCI during the 1960s itself, the NMC has also given the green signal to DM and MCh courses in 3 (three) super speciality departments during this platinum jubilee year of the institute.
• 28^th April 2022 was a red letter day in the annals of Assam Medical College, with the visit of honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. It witnessed the dawn of a new beginning in cancer care with the inauguration of the state of the art cancer hospital within the premises of the college.
• Assam Medical College has always had a very strong research foundation. It was the pioneer in establishing the model rural health research unit (MRHRU) and multidisciplinary research unit (MRU). These projects have given the much needed impetus to both community based and laboratory based research work.
• The college has 345 faculty in its rolls. About 375 nursing staff, 300 grade 3 and 500 grade 4 employees act as support system for various medical services offered by the college. The average daily outdoor attendance is 1,239 and the total indoor bed capacity is 1,365. It is the nodal centre for many national health programs, referral centre for more than 5 upper Assam districts as well as nearby states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Essentially, it provides universal health coverage to greater part of north eastern India.
• There are many allied institutes within its campus of the college, offering degree, diploma and certificate courses. Some of these are in Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing (BSc, GNM, ANM) and Paramedical sciences.
• Assam Medical College being a residential campus, provides for accommodation of both boys and girls. There are 11 undergraduate hostels and 6 post graduate hostels with in-house kitchen and dining facilities.
• Assam Medical College has produced innumerable gems who have gone on to become stalwarts in their fields of expertise. As it steps into the platinum jubilee of fruitful existence, it will continue to be a beacon of hope and care throughout the whole world.

• COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. Since then, the disease has caused significant morbidity and mortality across the World. Development of safe and effective vaccine was identified as the most promising tool to help mount a protective immune response to reduce disease’s severity and curtail transmission. Accordingly, intense global efforts were mounted to develop COVID-19 vaccines.
• India joined the global pursuit of developing safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines since inception of the pandemic. The story of development of India’s home-grown vaccine, COVAXIN started in April 2020 following successful isolation of the first SARS-CoV-2 virus strain at Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. From here ICMR and Bharat Biotech International Ltd (BBIL), an indigenous Hyderabad based company, embarked upon one of the most successful public private partnership to develop an effective COVID-19 vaccine.
• Based on results of the preclinical animal studies, two formulations of the vaccine appeared promising (i) 3ug with alum adjuvant + TLR7/8 agonist and (ii) 6ug with alum adjuvant + TLR7/8 agonist. The two formulations were further tested in human clinical trials. The clinical trials in humans consist of mainly three phases: Phase 1, aimed to determine the safety, phase 2 determined the immune response and phase 3 was for efficacy, which is the ability of a vaccine to reduce disease burden in vaccinated people, under trial conditions.
• In the largest COVID-19, phase 3 clinical trial conducted across 25 sites in India on 25,800 individuals, an efficacy of 77.8% against symptomatic COVID-19 was reported for COVAXIN, along with a good safety and immunogenicity profile. In the backdrop of emergence of variant strains of SARS-CoV-2, studies were undertaken by ICMR-NIV to understand the effectiveness of COVAXIN against variant strains of SARS-CoV-2 like alpha, beta, kappa, zeta, delta and its sublineages.
• Research studies were undertaken by ICMR and BBIL with extreme scientific rigor while following high ethical standards. The high-quality work conducted under this collaboration emanated into a series of seventeen research publications in high impact factor; peer reviewed and internationally renowned journals. This itself speaks high about the strong position of COVAXIN amongst other global front-runner COVID-19 vaccines.
• On 3^rd November 2021, COVAXIN has been included as the eighth vaccine globally to receive the WHO Emergency Use Listing (EUL), after fulfilling the intense review and scrutiny of scientific data and manufacturing processes. Today, as the country is celebrating 75 years of independence, India stands tall in the global community where more than 1.1 billion citizens have been vaccinated for COVID-19.
• The bench to bedside journey of COVAXIN in less than 10 months’ time, showcases the immense strength of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” along with the strong will of Indian Academia and Industry in fighting against the odds and carving a niche in the global community. India’s first desi vaccine “COVAXIN”, is a landmark achievement portraying self-reliance of India. In this context, it is an honour for the Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, to highlight this path-breaking contribution of India to add to the arsenal in the global crusade against the COVID-19 pandemic.
