About : 

• Shaheed Sheikh Kamal (5 August 1949 – 15 August 1975) was the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and younger brother of Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
• He completed his matriculation from Shaheen School, Dhaka in 1967 and higher Secondary Certificate Examination from Dhaka College in 1969. He was the General Secretary of the Chatro League in Dhaka College. He practiced sitar at Chhayanaut, a school of music. At the same time, he was involved in diverse cultural activities and a keen sportsman. Kamal was an organizer of the Mukti Bahini. Kamal received war time commission in Bangladesh Army during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
• He worked as the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) of General Osmani the Commander-in-Chief of the Mukti Bahini, during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. After independence, he left the military at the rank of Captain to return to University of Dhaka from where he graduated with Honours in sociology. Days before his tragic demise on 15 August 1975, Kamal completed his Masters Degree in sociology from Dhaka University. On 14 July 1975, he married an athlete, Sultana Khuki.
• Kamal, an avid sportsman, founded the Abahani in 1972, a popular sporting club of Bangladesh. He enjoyed cricket, volleyball, and other sports. Abahani went on to win many local championships. He was killed with the rest of his family on 15 August 1975.

• Dr. Talimeren Ao was an Indian footballer and physician. He was born on 28 January 1918 in Assam, Naga hills in the village of Changki, in the then Naga Hills District of Assam.
• Dr. Talimeren Ao was captain of Mohun Bagan and Indian football team, flag bearer of the Indian Olympic contingent at the 1948 London Games and perhaps the most famous Naga. A phantom figure who hovers over the football history of free India, his footprints have faded but his name is resonant and powerful in the collective memory of his people.
• Two football tournaments are staged in his name. In Assam, where Talimeren grew up, there are two sporting venues named after him – an indoor stadium in Cotton College, Guwahati, where he studied, and an outdoor venue in Kaliabor, east of the Kaziranga National Park.
• At a time when the Indian Super League (ISL), India’s high-profile football league, has a team called North East United near the top of the points table, it’s worth re-telling the story of the region’s first footballing hero. At the beginning, there will always be Talimeren. The name means the all-glorious or all-mighty in the Ao language and, at 5’10”, he had the physique to back it up. Talimeren was a dominating presence in midfield and defence for nine seasons at Mohun Bagan (1943 to 1952), and a team-mate of Sailen Manna and Taj Mohammed at the London Olympics.
• Talimeren had to give up competitive football to pursue his medical career during the early years of independent India, returning home to Kohima as an assistant civil surgeon at the Civil Hospital in 1953. He retired as Nagaland’s Director of Health Services in 1978 and died in 1998 at the age of 80.
• Talimeren’s life is an implausible odyssey, an enormity of achievement over a short span of time while straddling a vast geography. From the hilltop village of Changki in the Ao tribe’s homeland of Mokokchung in Nagaland, to leading out free India’s first Olympic contingent in London, Talimeren traversed villages, towns, cities and nations.
• Football is central to his storyline. The sport found its way into his life at the age of six or seven, after the Baptist Reverend Subongwati moved his family from Changki to Impur, also in Mokokchung, as part of his missionary work.
• In Impur, Talimeren became his school’s football captain. His game started gathering strength in 1933, when he moved to high school at Jorhat’s Christian Mission School. From there, he moved to Guwahati’s Cotton College, where he was the leading all-round sportsman, collecting medals and trophies in athletics, volleyball and football.
• As a young footballer, he had an appetite for self-improvement. After watching Guwahati’s Maharana Club footballers train on the same ground as his college team, he asked them if he could join. Maharana, Guwahati’s biggest club at the time, turned the Cotton College striker into a defensive midfielder.
• The club were happy to put him up against their opposition, holding back the attacks on goal, and soon Talimeren was noticed as the man who had the temerity to mark and block the sublime Noor Mohammed of Hyderabad City Police. He soaked everything in, borrowing the training methods of better players, and earning a name for himself in the newspaper headlines and bright lights.
• Talimeren’s move from Guwahati to Calcutta, the heart of Indian football, came about after he earned a seat at the Carmichael Medical College (the present-day RG Kar Medical College). His friend from Maharana, Sarat Das, brought him over to Mohun Bagan in 1943, where he first paid a “joining fee” before working his way into their first XI. From then, it was juggling his medical studies and making his mark as a player, then on – within a year – to the Bagan captaincy and finally as India captain for the London Olympics and a short tour of Holland.
• At the Olympics, India almost upset France in their first match, missing two penalties in a 1-2 defeat. After the Olympics, on a tour of club matches in Holland, they beat Ajax Amsterdam 5-2 and of five games in England against club sides, won three and drew two.
• Legend has it that Talimeren was offered a year’s contract with Arsenal but he chose to return to India and continue his studies, earning his MBBS degree in 1950.
• As India captain, he naturally took on the role of leader, the team rallying behind his confidence. Under conventional Naga practice, Talimeren Ao’s name could have read Subongwati Talimeren Ningdangri in full – father’s name followed by son’s name followed by clan.

• The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is organizing the 20^th FIFA World Cup from 12^th June, 2014 at Brazil. The month long football battle, an ultimate test of endurance, zeal and mettle, is an eagerly awaited championship every four years.
• The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of football, was founded in May, 1904 in Paris with seven original members: France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain (represented by Madrid FC), Sweden and Switzerland. This association is governed by the Swiss law and based in Zurich. It has 209 member associations and its goal, enshrined in its Statutes, is the constant improvement of football. FIFA employs some 310 people from over 35 nations and is composed of a Congress (legislative body), Executive Committee (executive body), General Secretariat (administrative body) and committees (assisting the Executive Committee).
• This association is responsible for holding the World Cup every four years. Ever since the first competition in Uruguay in 1930, FIFA’s flagship has constantly grown in popularity and prestige. The original idea of bringing the world’s strongest national football teams together to compete for the title of World Champions is credited to Jules Rimet. World Cup was organised three times in the 1930s in Uruguay, Italy and France, before the Second World War put a 12-year stop to the competition. When it resumed in 1950, the FIFA World Cup was hosted by Brazil. Since then the tournament has been hosted by 15 countries across all the continents.
• The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil is one of the most awaited sporting events. Remaining true to its mission ‘Develop the game, touch the world, build a better future‘ the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil has taken up the task to communicate the importance of the environment and ecology. Its mascot Fuleco can play a key role in creating environmental awareness. The term is a fusion of two words ‘fotebal‘ and ‘ecologia‘.
• This year 32 teams had been divided into eight groups (A-H) with each group comprising of 4 teams. The matches will be played from 12^th June, 2014 to 13^th July, 2014. The competition will start with the Group Matches followed by the Round of 16, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and the Finals on 13^th July, 2014.

• Gostha Behari Paul, the doyen of Indian football was born on the 20^th of August, 1896, at Bhojeshwar, a small village of Faridpur district (now in Bangladesh). On his arrival at Calcutta in 1907, Gostha got introduced to the game of football in the Kumartuli Park (north Calcutta). In 1911, Mohun Bagan became the first Indian outfit to lift the IFA Shield defeating the Yorkshire Regiment 2-1. The Indians, who had been at the receiving end all the time, suddenly realised the joy of victory over Britishers. The game became very popular in India particularly in West Bengal, and this popularity can perhaps be attributed to the Charisma of Gostha Paul, who became a legend in his lifetime. This barefooted Indian player rose to greater heights of glory. He became a symbol of hopes and aspirations of the pre-independence generation who longed for India and Indians to take their rightful place on the world platform.
  
• Discovered by Late Rajen Sen at Bhagyakul, Gostha played his first match for Mohun Bagan at the age of 16 in 1913 against Dalhousie F.C. He played for Mohun Bagan, without a break, for the next 22 years till 1935. After a match against the D.C.L.I., Rangoon in the IFA Shield, “Red Rose” wrote in “THE ENGLISHMAN” – ‘GOSTHA IMPREGNABLE AS CHINESE WALL’.
  
• Gostha Paul’s performance against Durhams in a Rovers Cup final was summed up by ‘THE TIMES OF INDIA’ as – ‘PAUL, THE FINEST BACK EVER PLAYED IN BOMBAY’. Gostha captained the Mohun Bagan Club from 1921 to 1926. He also led the Indian contingent in their first outing to a foreign land, Ceylon, in 1924. But Gostha refused to lead the IFA XI to South Africa in 1934, supporting the views of the Mahatma against apartheid.
  
• On 27^th April, 1962 Gostha became the first footballer to receive the ‘PADMA SHRI’ award from the then President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The Government of West Bengal have honoured this legendary-figure of Indian Football by erecting a 13 feet bronze-statue of him in front of the Akashbani Bhavan, Calcutta. The VIP Gallery of the Mohun Bagan Stadium has been named as the “Gostha Paul Stand”.
  
• Gostha Paul passed away on 8^th of April, 1976. Gostha and his vision can be best expressed in his own words: “In an era, when we (Indians) were humiliated and insulted in every step of life, a life of remorse, the football arena was the only one place, where we could fight them (the Britishers) incessantly. I didn’t fear them, but it was they who feared me”.
  
• He was an epitome of patriotism, dedication, devotion and discipline. He became an institution who taught us something more than the mere skills of Football. Rakhal Bhattacharya, an eminent journalist, remarked, “India has produced many footballers of quality, but only one Gostha Paul”.

• Mohun Bagan Athletic Club was established in 1889. At that time Indian football was in its infancy. The Britishers were then considered as an indomitable footballing side. In 1911, a band of 11 bare-footed intrepid Bengalee footballers became the first Indian side to win the coveted Indian Football Association (IFA) shield under the captaincy of Sibdas Bhaduri defeating the might of the finest British combination, East Yorkshire Regiment. Though a triumph in a particular sporting event, it symbolised an Indian victory over the foreign rulers, thus making it a matter of rejoicing for every Indian. The club thereafter came to be recognised as a national institution. It heralded the advent of football in the East, and influenced the game in the whole of Asia. Since then the Club has had a glorious sporting tradition. It is an achievement for a sports body to carry on its activities for one hundred years retaining its prestigious traditions and status. Two of its players have been honoured by the award of Padma Shree for outstanding achievements in the field of football.
• The Club also broke the tradition of having only British military teams to participate in the Durand Cup Football Tournament, in 1923 in Simla. Subsequently, the Club was also invited for the Rovers Cup Tournament.
• The Club’s activities are not restricted to Football alone, but also cover Cricket, Tennis, Athletics, etc. in which fields also it has earned a good reputation of not having protested against the decisions of referees, in the true spirit of sports. The hockey team of the Club was initially captained by Jaipal Singh, under whose captaincy India also won the first Olympic Hockey Gold Medal at Amsterdam in 1928. Major Dhyan Chand, the wizard of hockey, had also played for the club during his Calcutta visits. The Club is also proud of producing a number of Olympians in hockey.

• Interest in international football began in 1872, when the first match between any two countries was played. This was Scotland Vs England in Glasgow. The idea of the World Cup was, however, conceived in France. Its true parents were, indeed, two Frenchmen: Jules Rimet, after whom it was first named and Henri Delaunay. Rimet was the President of the French Federation FFF for 30 years from its beginning in 1919 and President of FIFA, the Federation Internationale des Football Association, from 1920 to 1954.
• The very first meeting of FIFA took place in Paris in 1904, and decided that it alone had the right to organise a world championship. This right was not to be exercised for twenty six years. In 1920, at FIFA’s Antwerp Congress, concurrent with the Olympic Games, the idea of a World Cup, previously much debated, was accepted in principle. In 1924, at the Paris Olympics, the FIFA meeting discussed it in more serious detail, while a dazzling and hitherto obscure Uruguayan side walked off with the trophy of soccer tournament.
• In 1930, the first World Cup Tournament was held in which thirteen countries took part, only three being from Europe. Today, there are no fewer than 150 nations who are members of FIFA, the world governing body whose headquarters are in Zurich.
• The World Cup with its finals every four years following the example of Olympic Games is firmly ensconced in the world of sports and is now simply called the FIFA World Cup. The competition has been held in Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), France (1938), Brazil (1950), Switzerland (1954), Sweden (1958), Chile (1962), England (1966), Mexico (1970), West Germany (1974), Argentina (1978), Spain (1982) and now is scheduled for Mexico in 1986.

• Whatever is most noble, heroic and admirable in man is brought to perfection in sports. Sports contribute to the blossoming of the spirit of human endeavour which constantly seeks higher and higher levels of achievement. The ancient Greeks who instituted the Olympics realised the potentialities of organised sports apart from the virtues of individual callisthenics. The Olympics year was also a year of peace and goodwill during which the warring Greek city states declared a general truce.
• The Asiad is a symbol of Asian unity.  It will lead to the growth of fraternity and friendship among peoples and nations while strengthening and cementing old ones. The Asiad was instituted despite numerous obstacles and after many earlier attempts to organise such games in Asia had failed. Born under the patronage of Jawaharlal Nehru, the apostle of peace and brotherhood, the Asian Games have since led to the renaissance of sports in this Continent. In the First Asiad held in 1951, eleven countries participated with small contingents. The IX Asiad will have three times that number of participating countries. More than 5000 men and women will take part in the 21 events which include four new ones namely, equestrian, handball, golf and rowing.
• Delhi, which has been in the grip of gruelling preparations, has now been decked to perfection with a number of new patterns and designs waved into her fabric. One looks with wonder and admiration at the numerous fly-overs which have gracefully taken their positions as if they have been planted overnight. The many new hotels suddenly peering into the sky and the well laid out Asiad Village are welcome signs especially to friends from abroad. Apart from the renovated sports venues, the newly built Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with synthetic tracks and the Indraprastha Indoor Stadium with its silvery dome are exquisite creations in the service of sports.
• The world is turning its gaze to Delhi to witness the magnificent IX Asiad starting today with pageantry, colour and jubilation. Appu, the mascot of the games, with characteristics playfulness and friendliness, extends a royal welcome to all the participants in this festival of sports.
