About : 

• Sitaram Maroo was born on October 11, 1925, in Ranchi. His father, Chauthmal Maroo, originally from Renwal, Rajasthan, migrated to Ranchi in 1920 for business purposes. From an early age, Sitaram Maroo became an active volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
• Alongside his business pursuits, Sitaram Maroo developed a deep commitment to social service from an early age. In 1951, he became Secretary of Ranchi’s renowned social organisation, the Marwari Sahayak Samiti. In 1958, along with other visionaries, he helped establish Nagarmal Modi Seva Sadan, a charitable hospital.
• Further, strengthening nationalist ideals, he launched a weekly, “Jai Matribhoomi,” in Patna. In 1986, he became President of Sanskriti Vihar, the oldest cultural institution in South Bihar, now Jharkhand. Under his leadership, the organisation initiated night schools, rural medical camps, and eye-care programs, especially serving leprosy patients and marginalised communities.
• That same year, he laid the foundation for a spiritual centre dedicated to Lord Bhuvan Bhaskar (Surya Narayan) on a hill near NH-33, between Ranchi and Jamshedpur. Today, it stands as a revered religious and tourist destination in Jharkhand. From this centre, Sitaram Maroo launched Shishu Mandirs, promoting value-based education. More than 2,000 students across eight schools are currently being educated from classes 1 to 10.
• In recognition of his humanitarian efforts, he was honoured with the Manav Mitra Samman on January 25, 1997. That same year, the Rajasthan Parishad of Kolkata awarded him the title of “Social Worker of South Bihar” during Pratap Jayanti.
• To promote Indian culture, he initiated a Geeta Press (Gorakhpur) sales centre from his office premises, providing easy access to spiritual literature for the people of the region. He passed away on December 6, 2003.

• The culture of Odisha is characterized by its rich heritage of classical arts, temple architecture, traditional music and devotion. Its tapestry of history is woven by a number of unsung cultural heroes resulting in diverse and vibrant artistic tradition.
• Gangadhar Meher was born on 9^th August, 1862 on Sravana Purnima at Barapalli, of present-day Bargarh District of Odisha. He was born in a weaver family and educated upto 5^th class. His father Chaitanya Meher was working as a village Vaidya (Ayurvedic doctor) besides his family profession of weaving. At the age of 10, he got married to Shanta Devi.
• In spite of his little education, he had read a good number of books like Raguvamsham in Sanskrit, Tulasi Ramayana in Awadhi, etc. and mastered them. He was also able to read Bengali magazines and newspapers. Due to the pecuniary condition of his family, Gangadhar Meher used to go to school in the morning and helped his father in weaving in the afternoon. His clear and beautiful handwriting also garnered attention from many people willing to get their writings transcribed by him.
• The then Zamindar of Barapalli offered him the post of an Amin (Patwari). Coming to learn of amicable behaviour and good virtues of Gangadhar, the Zamindar promoted him to the post of a Moharir. He continued to serve in the said post and was transferred to Sambalpur, Bijepur and Padampur and at last he was transferred to his native place Barapalli on a salary of Rs. 30/- per month.
• Gangadhar started composing poems from a very tender age. His first writings follow the style and technique of the ancient Odia writers. His first poetic work was ‘Rasa Ratnakara’. Then, being persuaded by some friends he changed his ways and wrote poems in the modern Odia style. The works produced by Gangadhar Meher are marked by vivid imagination, in beauty and clarity of language, in the novelty of style, in point of forceful character painting and in the lively description of nature from different perspective. His writings remain as some of the greatest creations in the Odia literature.
• The popularity of his literary creations is due to his narration of the beauty of the nature. He was also the messenger of Upendra Bhanja’s style and ideals. Just like Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja, his poems are replete with high ornamental words, unique composition style, using in befitting cases, similes, metaphors and appropriate words. His poems are sonorous in the rhythm of words and languages.
• His poetic creations include Pranaya Ballari, Kichaka Badh, Indumati, Utkal Laxmi, Ayodhya Drusya, Kabita Kallola, Arghya Thali, Ahalya Staba, Mahima, Bharati Bhabana, Kumara Janmotsav, Bhakti Upahar, Padmini, Kabita Mala and Krushaka Sangita. His Prose creations include Atma Jeevani, Shri Nruparaj Singh, Purana Kabi Fakir Mohan, Swargiya Kashinath Panda, Ehaki Pruthibira Sabda, Sikshit, Ashikshit & Sikshyabhimanini.
• The great poet of Odia literature Gangadhar Meher breathed his last on 4^th April, 1924.

• The culture of Odisha is characterized by its rich heritage of classical arts, temple architecture, traditional music and devotion. Its tapestry of history is woven by a number of unsung cultural heroes resulting in diverse and vibrant artistic tradition.
• Santha Kabi Bhima Bhoi is a unique genius and spiritual poet born in the 19^th Century (1850). The legend about him is so complex and mysterious that it is still not possible to say anything about him with certainty. As a result, the poet’s date of birth, date of death, birth place, field of worship and life – everything is shrouded in mystery.
• Bhima Bhoi was employed as a cowherd in the house of Chaitanya Pradhan of Kakanpada. One day, while herding the cows, he fell into an abandoned well near Kandhara village. He refused to take help of anybody other than the one who had thrown him into the well. Eventually, Mahima Gosain appeared at the site and served a condition that he would pick him up if he agreed to propagate his thoughts. He also blessed him with the power to write poetry.
• Bhima Bhoi was a great tribal saint poet, philosopher, social reformer and a revolutionary par excellence, the founder of modern cult named Satya Mahima Dharma. Towards the end of 19^th century, Saint Bhima Bhoi saved the downtrodden people from accepting Christianity. He gave a new dimension to the Hindu religion by creating the Satya Mahima Cult with substantive principles of Sanatan Dharma. It was based on the principles of non-attachment and renunciation. Under his able leadership, the cult spread like wildfire in the whole of Odisha and nearby states like Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and other parts of India.
• He is a literary genius who has to his credit thousands of verses both in Odia (Kosali) and Bengali. Some of those are published in book form and some are still unpublished. His important works include Brahma Nirupana Gita, Stuti Chintamani, Astaka Bihari Gita, Chautisa Madhu Chakra and Bhajanamala. “Granthavali” published in his name, which is rated as a marvellous work of literary excellence of international repute.
• His famous verse “Praninka arata, dukha apramita dekhu dekhu keba sahu, mo jibana pachhe narke padithau, jagata udhhara heu” has found a place on the walls of the United Nations and the Indian Parliament.
• Bhima Bhoi and Maa Annapurna are worshipped by their devotees as God and Goddess whose Paduka Temple is enshrined in the premises of Khaliapali Samadhi Pitha. He was a young yogi and his yoga was effective par excellence. Bhima Bhoi breathed his last in Khaliapali on Shiva Chaturdasi in 1895, where his Samadhi temple is located.

• Shri Arvind N. Mafatlal was born on October 27, 1923, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Educated at St. Xavier’s High School and Sydenham College, Mumbai, he was the proud heir to a great business legacy, founded in 1905 by his entrepreneur grandfather Shri Mafatlal Gagalbhai.
• Shri Arvind Mafatlal took over the reins of the Mafatlal Group of Companies in 1955, and spearheaded its progress with bold and innovative ideas, perseverance and brilliant strategy.
• Between 1963 and 1968, he set up India’s first integrated petrochemical complex through two pioneering joint venture companies – NOCIL, in partnership with Royal Dutch Shell Co. of Netherlands/UK and Polyolefins Industries Ltd (PIL) in partnership with Hoechst AG of Germany, a world leader in chemicals.
• In the same period, two additional pioneering chemical ventures, Standard Alkalies Ltd and Navin Fluorine Industries were also set up. In the years to come, he raised the textile business of the Group to new heights of glory, and was hailed as a leader and trendsetter in the industry.
• As the Chairman of Shri Sadguru Seva Sangh Trust set up by his Gurudev in 1968, Shri Arvind Mafatlal focused on providing vital health services in tribal and rural areas, and contributed tirelessly to relief and rehabilitation work during natural calamities. His ‘Sukhadi Programme’ which aimed to assuage the hunger of those stricken by debilitating droughts and famines, saved the lives of millions in the remote corners of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The Sadguru Trust also established a number of eye care hospitals and schools in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and has carried out more than 1.1 million eye surgeries and post-operative care.
• From the late sixties onwards, he brought his dynamism and farsightedness to bear on the activities of BAIF (Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation). In 1977, he was nominated as Chairman, BAIF. He served in this position until his demise. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for gram-rajya in an independent India, he, along with Manibhai, helped BAIF execute exemplary projects in community development and relief, sustainable rural development and food security.
• Shri Arvind Mafatlal held various important positions in prestigious financial institutions, such as Director in State Bank of India and Director in Industrial Development Bank of India. He was the recipient of prestigious accolades like the Durga Prasad Khaitan Memorial Gold Medal (1966), the Business Leadership Award of Madras Management Association (1971), the Indian Merchants’ Chamber Award (1975), the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Gold Medal for Industrial Peace of XLRI, Jamshedpur (1978), the Honour of Maharashtra Economic Development Council (1985), the Lions’ Humanitarian Award by the International Association of Lions Clubs (USA) for sight-related activities (1993), and the Rotary Club of Bombay’s ‘Citizen of Bombay’ Award for the year 1995.
• On October 30^th, 2011, at Chitrakoot in Madhya Pradesh, Shri Arvind N. Mafatlal left his body. He played an important role in the post independence growth of the country. Through his foresight, brilliant strategy and vision he not only spearheaded the Mafatlal group but also inspired countless young minds. He was also an ardent social reformer. To achieve his social vision of improved quality of life for the underprivileged he founded BAIF, which used modern technology and focussed research and development to improve the livelihood of tribals and landless. He was also a great proponent of women empowerment.

About : 

• The Parliament House building, originally designed as a Council House by the colonial government, was commissioned in 1927 and is almost 100 years old and a Heritage Grade-I building. It is widely believed that the Chausath Yogini Temple in Morena, Madhya Pradesh inspired the building design. While the building is a grand architectural monument which highlighted architectonic elements from Indian tradition such as chhajjas, chhatris, jharokhas, jaalis, gumbads, the architects Lutyens and Baker could not completely forgo the European classism that the entire structure was meant to stand monument to. This shone through not only in how the Chambers were intentionally made to differ in size and interior based on the occupants but also in the teak wood panelling of the Assembly Chamber highlighting the four British Dominions through enamelled and gilded coats of arms embedded into it. The Hall, intended for state occasions and joint sessions, was meant to be a symbol of the Indian Empire’s integral unity, built to possibly house a Durbar from all across the subcontinent.
• The New Building in Parliament Complex is the first purpose-designed Parliament of India. It is designed to address the issues of space, infrastructure and safety standards that are currently faced by the present Parliament building. In doing so, it symbolizes the modernization of India’s governance infrastructure and the coalescence of our diverse people into a nation.
• Located adjacent to the present building, the new building has larger Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha halls. Modern technology and building systems for the efficient functioning of an expanded Parliament are integrated. While the design is modern in its construction techniques and building materials, it respects the architectural character of the local context.
• The new building is designed to address the present and future needs of efficient Parliamentary functioning. The present parliament building was designed as a Council House and later converted to serve as the Parliament house after independence. The requirements of our bicameral legislature being different from the council house, have led to many ad-hoc extensions and technological addition. These extensions and additions have affected the present Parliament building’s structural integrity. The new building will relieve the present Parliament building of the functional stress it has faced from ad-hoc upgrades and allow for its proper refurbishment and retrofitting.
• The new building will have a seating capacity of 672 in the Lok Sabha and 384 in the Rajya Sabha. Further, the four public galleries each for both houses will help the public to watch the debates of Parliamentarians and the proceedings of Parliament. Other functional spaces such as the meeting rooms, lounge areas and the dining halls also fall short of present needs. Makeshift arrangements thus, have to be made, and are not very comfortable or dignified. Larger bespoke spaces for these functions are now accommodated in the new building’s design.
• Located on a triangular plot adjacent to the Sansad Bhavan, the New Building in a built-up area of 65,000 sq m is designed to make efficient use of land. It houses the Lok Sabha Chamber, the Rajya Sabha Chamber, a Courtyard, library, office areas, dining areas and the Constitution Hall and Gallery – a publicly accessible space.
• The new building looks to the future. Building systems are designed to function in an integrated manner with latest technology to support parliamentary procedures and optimise the consumption of energy. This green building is a symbol of India’s commitment towards environmental sustainability. The new building’s design achieves the highest safety standards in the context of earthquake proofing.
• The central Lounge complements the Open Courtyard and serves as a place for Members of Parliament to interact. The building will also have state of the art committee rooms equipped with the latest audio-visual systems. The Constitution Hall will house the original copy the Constitution of India and it symbolically and physically puts the Indian citizens at the heart of the Parliament Complex. It is also designed as Divyang friendly to enable the people with disabilities to move around freely and independently. Further, the building will have offices that are designed to be secure, efficient, and are equipped with the latest communications technology. This purpose designed facilities will help deliver superior experience for the Members of Parliament.
• The design takes inspiration from our heritage. The exterior design continues the materiality and colour scheme of the present Parliament building. Details reflecting India’s construction legacies have been incorporated in the architecture and nationally recognised symbols have been used as motifs in the interior design of the building.
• Each element of the new building is thoughtfully designed and crafted to mirror the rich cultural heritage of India. While the interiors of the Lok Sabha are based on the peacock theme, our national bird, the Rajya Sabha is based on Lotus theme, the national flower. The open-sky courtyard of 700 Sq m in the New Building in Parliament Complex has a banyan tree, a symbol of knowledge and longevity, and the national tree of India. The three galleries leading to the Constitution Hall are adorned with artefacts to represent the rich cultural vibrancy and the heritage of Indian civilization. The murals and panels of the building also manifest the country’s centuries’ old democratic traditions. Specially designed and hand-woven carpets, stone carved bands, furniture details, jail designs, ceiling patterns – each feature is inspired from and made in different parts of the country embodies the spirit of the unity in diversity of India. The architectural styles from across India are seamlessly interwoven with the elements of modernity to mirror the scientific tradition of the country. The placement, shape and size of the new building preserves the formal order and symmetry of its context.
• The two buildings, along with the Parliament Library, and Annexe will work together as an integrated Legislative Enclave. This will facilitate smooth and efficient functioning of operations of the Parliament. The New Building in Parliament Complex manifests the aspiration of 21^st century India and will stand as an epitome of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’.

• The music of Akshya Kumar Mohanty combined the nativeness of Odisha in all its forms – folk, classical and emerging. He was the most sought after music Director of Odia Film Industry who is widely known for his romantic songs. He was also a singer of repute and a lyricist. He experimented with themes and his creation started a new cult of ballads in Odia, such as “Kanchi Abhijana”, “Randipua Ananta” and “Konark Gatha”.
• Born on 12.10.1937, Akshya Kumar Mohanty has written more than 4000 songs, sung over 8000 songs and composed music in 106 feature films. His literary work also includes 100 short stories, 12 novels and an autobiography. His writings were crisp, direct and bold. He was a master storyteller in Odia language. He is also known for his peppy youthful songs like “Jaare Bhasi Bhasi Ja”. His literary work also reflects the sensitivity and depth of an artist to do justice to the complex feelings and emotions. His immortal songs and compositions remain the most heard and revered Odia songs among the younger generation also. He passed away on 17.11.2002.

• Of all the regional cultures, Odisha or the ancient Kalinga played a very conspicuous and vital role in the cultural matrix of Indian civilization. From the time immemorial Odisha has attracted a large number of scholars, artists and tourists.
• Kantakabi Lakshmikanta Mohapatra was born at Bakharabad, Cuttack on 09.12.1888. He hailed from the family of freedom fighters and received the honour of Kantakabi in 1934. From his childhood, he was fond of songs, music, drama and literature. By cruel blow of destiny, he was affected by leprosy; but it could not prevent him from pursuing his creative writing. He contributed to all aspects of literary world of Odia literature. He has written beautiful parodies, the most famous among them is “Chataka Chandra Hasa Champu”. Kantakabi used to encourage young writers through his magazine, “Dagara”, which was being published from Bhadrak, Odisha.
• When the freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi gripped the entire nation, Kantakabi through his patriotic songs used to enthuse the masses. He also actively participated in the movement of unification of Odia speaking areas and penned down “Bande Utkal Janani”, the song which has been accorded the State Anthem by the Odisha State. He breathed his last on 24.02.1953. He lives in the heart of Odia people through his immortal work.

• Parbati Ghose a.k.a. Chapala and Chandana was a legend in the Odia Film Industry. She was born in Cuttack, Odisha in 1942. She came from a family rich in culture and education. She got indulged with dancing lessons from great exponents like Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Dayal Sharma and Guru Suresh Routray. From a very young age she participated in a lot of social causes and State celebrations like Rabindra Jayanti. She got involved in All India Radio and participated in the social and cultural programmes of the Praja Socialist Party.
• The huge success of the movie “Sri Jagannath” was defining moment of her long and memorable career. In 1953, she was offered the lead role in “Amari Gaan Jhua” opposite Gour Ghose. In 1956, she played a leading role in “Bhai Bhai” a sensitive story of division of caste and wealth. She also acted in National award winning movies “Laxmi” in 1962, “Kaa” in 1965 and “Stree” in 1968. Later, she kept her passion alive through acting in TV serials and Radio plays and soon conferred the top most status in both. She also made short films like “Sankalp”, “Surakhya” and “Amari Gaan” for Family Welfare Department, Government of Odisha. She breathed her last on 12.02.2018, leaving behind her imprint and legacy in the Odia Film Industry.

• Born on 08.01.1926 at Raghurajpur village in Puri, Kelucharan Mohapatra, is widely known as father of architect of Odissi dance. The story of his artistic experience touches all the salient features of the cultural life of Odisha and has become the story of growth and recognition of ‘Odissi style’ as one of the classical dances of India.
• Fondly known as Guruji, he established himself as a dancer and choreographer with the Annapurna “B” Theatre in Cuttack in 1940. He established his own distinct style and developed further dances in a systematic and precise manner. He travelled widely for popularizing Odissi dance and was associated with Odissi Research Centre in Bhubaneswar for more than a decade.
• In 1966, Guruji received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He was conferred with Padmashree in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1988. In 1993, Guruji established “Srjan” in Bhubaneswar, as a humble offering to dance, music and rich national ethos. Throughout his lifetime, he made over 200 solo compositions and about 50 dance ballets to his credit and over 5000 students from across the world learned Odissi dance from him. For him, dance was a Sadhana and teaching, a Dharma. His demise on 07.04.2004 was a personal loss to many worldwide, who knew him through his dance and love for national ethos. His legacy lives on.
